Rescued baby deer doing well at WFFT

That abandoned baby Muntjac deer Expat News reported on a few days ago is now safe and recovering at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT). The deer, who has been named Cha Lao, was found all alone and was being chased by street dogs when it was rescued. AT WFFT, he was given a medical examination and has since been receiving specialist care. including regular bottle feeding with warmed milk. He is a little wobbly on his feet, and at just a few days old, the next few weeks will be vital for his survival.

4-day New Year’s holiday this year, 5 days in 2024-25

The Thai cabinet announced four New Year public holidays yesterday from Dec. 29 through Jan. 1, said Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej, secretary-general of the office of the prime minister.

For the following New Year, he said that the cabinet approved a proposal to include Monday, Dec. 30 as an extra day off, increasing public holidays to five days, from Dec. 28 through Jan. 1, 2025. Continued ,,,

The end of Buddhist Lent this year will be on Sunday, Oct. 29, when alcohol sales will be banned nationwide for 24 hours.

Heavy rain warning for 36 Thai provinces

The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) today issued a heavy rain warning for 36 provinces, including Bangkok, cautioning against potential flash floods and forest runoff. The advisory follows the weakening of a high-pressure system that has dominated northern Thailand and the South China Sea.

PM2.5 readings in 13 Bangkok districts exceed acceptable levels

Air pollution in 13 Bangkok districts was recorded at well beyond acceptable levels this morning from 5am to 7am.

According to the Bangkok air quality index, readings of inhalable particulate matter measuring 2.5 microns or less (PM2.5) in the city came in at between 15.5 and 54.7 micrograms per cubic meter of air (µg/m³). Continued …

Thailand sets out to lower PM2.5 pollution in 2024

As the year draws to a close, Thailand is once again struggling with air pollution caused by hazardous PM2.5 particulate matter. These tiny particles are difficult to trap or manage, making them a significant concern.

Crackdown on illegality extends to the nightlife sector; no more graft or pay-to-play

Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has announced that the national crackdown being driven by his ministry is being extended into illegal activity within the nightlife sector, following an early morning raid last Sunday, which shuttered a notorious venue in Pathum Thani, which saw its operators arrested and 137 out of 297 people detained testing positive for illegal narcotics.

The minister of the interior in the present cabinet said the buying influence or protection era was over. The move comes as the public is evenly split over a revived government proposal to allow an 4 am closing time for nightlife operators in tourist hotspots currently being proposed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Two killed, two injured in violent brawl over a woman

A violent brawl over a woman led to the deaths of two individuals and the injuries of two others in Prachinburi province. The violent brawl incident took place in front of a residential building where the victims were drinking alcohol. The police were able to apprehend one suspect at midnight today.

The altercation was initiated by a group of aggressive young men chasing and attacking their victims with knives. The crime scene, a commercial building front being used as workers’ accommodation, was littered with toppled bamboo tables. Continued …

Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has called on Israeli employers to stop exploiting their Thai workers during this perilous period. He alleges that salary payments are being deliberately postponed as a means to retain Thai workers in Israel amid growing safety concerns.

TCEB predicts business travel/meetings 2024 revival

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) forecasts a business travel sector revival by 2024, with 23.2 million travelers expected. However, it predicts a business travel return to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019 only by 2025 or 2026 due to global economic unpredictability.

TCEB’s president, Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, revealed that its business travel revival strategy will focus on stimulating international exhibitions, major events, and festivals, which have demonstrated rapid growth. The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) is worried the impact of the Israel-Hamas war on Thai tourism could become severe if the conflict expands. ATTA President Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn said the Thai tourism industry this year has been buoyed by over 1 million Russian visitors, attracted by the warm weather, perceived safety, and affordable living.

Phichit to turn Akara Gold Mine into a mountain bike track

Part of Akara Gold Mine in Phichit’s Thap Khlo district is being eyed for development as the province’s new mountain bike arena, which will also double as a training center of international standard for the national team’s athletes. Sri Lanka approves free tourist visa for Thailand, 6 other countries

Sri Lanka’s cabinet approved issuing free tourist visas to visitors from seven countries, including China, India and Russia, a statement issued by the media ministry said on Tuesday, to boost tourism and help revive its crisis-hit economy.

Tourists from China, India, Russia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia will be issued free visas until March 31, 2024, under a pilot program, the statement detailing cabinet decisions said. Continued …

Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.

Thai therapists popularity in the Middle East bolsters remittances amid conflict

Overseas Thai workers, particularly those in Israel, are in the limelight as the conflict escalates in the region. Over 7,000 Thai individuals are awaiting evacuation, with instances of Thais being kidnapped by militants.

Records from the Bank of Thailand reveal that the remittance from these overseas workers in the first three quarters of the current year was around 184 billion baht. Baby Deer Found Living Among Street Dogs Rescued by WFFT

When locals in a village in Thailand spotted a baby animal running around and barking near packs of street dogs, they immediately realized something was wrong. Despite the baby’s dog-like cries, he definitely wasn’t a dog — he was a muntjac deer who had wandered away from a nearby forest and was now all alone.

As soon as the villagers realized what was happening, they contacted Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) for help. The baby deer, later named Cha Lao, was only a few days old and clearly needed help. He was being chased by street dogs and would bark to try and keep them away. Continued …

Heavy rainfall to hit 43 Thai provinces

Bangkok returns to top 10 list of world’s most polluted cities as PM2.5 soars

Bangkok was listed among the world’s top 10 most polluted cities on Friday as levels of harmful PM2.5 dust soared to 48 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3). IQAir, a website that collects air quality data worldwide, ranked the Thai capital 10th in its global pollution list as of 7am on Friday.

While PM2.5 levels remain at safe levels in other parts of the country, they have risen beyond the safety threshold of 37.5μg/m3 in most areas of Bangkok, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) reported. Continued …

Thailand’s EV initiative: Driving toward a greener future

The Thai government has embarked on an ambitious plan to replace aging government vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), in line with its carbon neutrality goal set for 2050. The Thai EV initiative move was prompted by a notification issued by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, encouraging the use of EVs within the government sector.

Srettha’s order, issued via the Secretariat of the Cabinet, has directed the Finance and Energy Ministries to collaborate with the Budget Bureau, the Office of the Council of State, and other relevant sectors to facilitate the procurement process for EVs. Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. Western retirees in Thailand feeling rather insecure

Premier Srettha Thavisin’s new Pheu Thai-led administration has already seen massive investment in Thailand’s short-term visa programs. The mass market Chinese tourists are now 30 days visa-free, at least until February 2024, and appear to have no problem obtaining a further month at immigration if wished.

Work in progress viewable at Cha Am’s Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

Two Thai elephants born through artificial insemination

Among the more than 4,000 elephants in Thailand, two hold a special honor: both were born using artificial insemination in a bid to protect the species and maintain the country’s biodiversity.

According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation as of March 9 this year, between 4,013 and 4,422 elephants lived in 91 national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and non-hunting areas across Thailand. Gregal, a beachfront Mediterranean restaurant, has opened in Hua Hin. The restaurant is located beside The Royal Princess Condominium Hua Hin. Wine tax in Thailand: A Protectionist Barrier?

Why is wine tax in Thailand 250% on average? In most cases, duties constitute a state’s first protection against products imported from other countries in direct competition with local production.

Does Thailand produce wine? Yes, local production is around one million liters per year and is based in three areas of the country: Loei, Hua Hin and Khao Yai. The projects are relatively recent, and the quality of the wine produced is rather low, with a high price. The national oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc has agreed to delay accepting payments of 8-9 billion baht for the gas it sells to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to help the government reduce power bills for the rest of this year. Gas makes up around 60% of the fuel used for power generation in Thailand.

The Thai Revenue Department has explained more about the taxation of income overseas, which will affect both some foreigners and some Thai people.

The basic idea is, that when money is transferred into Thailand it should be taxed in Thailand if it is income. If the income has been received in another country and later within the same tax year is being transferred to the taxpayer’s account in Thailand, it must be taxed in Thailand. If Thailand has a double tax agreement with the country where the money comes from, the tax paid in that foreign country can be deducted in Thailand according to the rules in the double tax agreement. Two dead, five wounded in Siam Paragon shooting, suspect used modified BB gun

A Chinese tourist and a woman from Myanmar were killed at Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday afternoon, by a teenager using a modified BB gun, according to Police Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the national police chief. Some media reported a third death.

On Monday, Police Capt. Thongkham Phoyai, Saraburi Province, received a report that 13 14-meter-tall concrete poles with high voltage wires fell down during installation at the Ban Krua subdistrict, Ban Mo District. A security camera caught a foreign couple stealing two motorcycle helmets from a post office welfare house in the northern province of Chiang Mai in a bid to avoid being fined at a police checkpoint.

Giant python crashes lunchtime in Yala

A giant python, almost 5 meters long and weighing 7 kilograms, caused a stir yesterday when it slithered into a noodle shop in Yala. The reptile was discovered by the shop owner, Suhayna Beeing, who immediately alerted residents of the Gunung Janoang community, sparking panic and attracting a crowd of onlookers.

Suhayna noticed the giant python hiding under a pile of goods in his shop. The shop owner’s call for help was answered by Kanob, a local farmer and president of the local charity foundation. Thailand’s prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, pointed out yesterday that the weakening baht, despite its potential negative impact on energy import costs, is actually proving to be a boon for the country’s exports and tourism. Tourism confidence in Thailand plummets amid economic jitters

The tourism confidence index in Thailand has taken a hit, with figures sliding from 91 in the same period of 2019 to 69 in the third quarter of this year, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT).

Thai baht plummets against the US$

The Thai baht has plummeted to its lowest level against the USD since November last year, driven by concerns of “stagflation in countries that heavily rely on energy imports. That includes Thailand.

The baht experienced its second consecutive day of declines against the USD, falling by 0.6% and reaching its lowest point since Nov.10, 2022. As of yesterday afternoon, the baht is valued at 36.2 per U.S. dollar. Stimulating private consumption is a reasonable strategy for the government to maintain economic growth amid global uncertainties, according to Tim Leelahaphan, an economist at Standard Chartered Bank Thailand. The Ministry of Commerce is considering using its extensive network of retail outlets, shops and eateries, under the “Blue Flag” (Thong Fah) program, to allow people, who may have difficulty finding shops under the digital wallet 4km radius rule, to spend the 10,000-baht benefit under the scheme.

Gold prices in Thailand saw a significant surge as per the Gold Traders Assn. Compared to the closing price of the previous day, gold ornaments Tuesday were sold at an increased rate of 33,100 baht (US$926) per baht weight, marking an upswing of 100 baht.

The details of the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme would be proposed for Cabinet approval within the next 10 days, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said yesterday.
