More flooding is expected in beleaguered Chiang Mai later today, with water levels along the Ping River expected to reach 4.95 meters starting in the morning. Recent heavy downpours in upstream areas have caused the Ping River to rise rapidly, Gov. Nirat Pongsitthithaworn said on Thursday.

Heavy monsoon rains are expected to lash 39 provinces across Thailand, with severe weather warnings issued for potential flash floods and runoff. Bangkok is also bracing for significant rainfall, with 70% of the area anticipated to be affected.

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms will cover 60% of the area, mostly in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. In 2023, Thailand saw one of the worst drops in FDI in the world

Foreign direct investment (FDI), a key barometer for economic growth for developing countries, has seen a decline of about 2% in 2023, with Thailand’s share of FDI inflow declining among the highest in the world, according to latest data released by United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD), with ASEAN continuing to remain in the positive trajectory witnessing a 1.2% uptick in its FDI to US$ 226.3 billion.

UNCTAD, in a report released recently, said that global FDI in 2023 decreased marginally, by 2%, to $1.3 trillion. This headline figure was affected by wild swings in financial flows through a small number of European conduit economies; excluding the effect of these conduits, global FDI flows were more than 10% lower than in 2022. The Constitutional Court on Wednesday reinstated Pita Limjaroenrat as Move Forward Party MP after it ruled that iTV Plc had not been a media firm since March 7, 2007.

The office of the Constitutional Court announced that the majority of judges had dismissed the request of the Election Commission to disqualify Pita as an MP under Article 101 of the Constitution for holding shares in a media firm. Two baby leopard cats rescued in Phichit province

Two tiny leopard cats left by their mother in a sugarcane plot in Phichit’s Sam Ngam district were recently rescued by officials from Protected Areas Regional Office 12 (Nakhon Sawan). The female kittens, which are about a month old, are healthy, have no injuries, and are able to drink milk suited to their species. Thailand’s GDP growth disappoints with a slow 1.8% rise in 2023

GDP growth in 2023 slowed to a disappointing 1.8%, according to an announcement by the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO). Director-general Pornchai Thiraveja attributed this to a combination of negative factors impacting the economy. Originally, the growth was forecast to rise to 2.7% in 2023, based on a projection made in October last year.

Airport chaos as biometric system fails

Long queues formed at Suvarnabhumi airport on Wednesday morning after the biometric blacklist system used by the Immigration Bureau broke down.

I always think it’s interesting to look within a short distance of capital areas where people are going. Khao Yai outside of Bangkok is one example where things are happening. And I think Hua Hin will continue to transform.

Pattaya municipality officers reported on their social media channel an incident that took place on Jan. 18 in which two unidentified foreign tourists were arrested for violating the property of umbrella and beach bed operators.

Thai income tax worries spark interest in 10-year visa

Concerns about Thailand’s intention to tax foreign income from January 2024 has created a new market for Thailand’s long-term resident (LTR) visa. That’s because those who obtain the 10-year LTR are exempted from paying personal income tax on foreign assets or earnings. The new rules apply to all native and foreign residents of Thailand who spend six months or more here in a year.

The Board of Investment, which controls the LTR, says about 3,000 such visas were issued since the launch in 2022, but the publicity surrounding the new tax regulation has seen a 14% rise in applications. Continued …

Most Thais are worried about the impact of PM2.5 air pollution, an opinion poll conducted by Suan Dusit University found.

Uptick in COVID-19 infections is seasonal, will drop in February

The current increase in COVID-19 infections is seasonal, like other respiratory diseases, and will continue until the end of January, returning to normal between February and May, according to Dr. Yong Poovorawan, head of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine of Chulalongkorn University.

Telco regulator asked to review True’s service charges and quality

Four members of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), Thailand’s broadcast and telecom regulator, have proposed that the commission consider the service charges and quality of True Corp. after the successful merger of Total Access Communications Co. (DTAC) and True Corp. (TRUE) in March this year.

The commissioners say that they have received complaints from many subscribers that the quality of the mobile phone and internet services of True have dropped, while the service charges have increased through changes to service packages. Continued …

The Energy Business Department will seek Cabinet endorsement for discontinuing the sale of B10 diesel oil, leaving only B7 and B20 oil options available, the department’s chief said.

Thai economy poised for growth in 2024, fueled by tourism and exports

People want single minimum wage for the whole country

Most respondents to a recent opinion poll want one minimum wage rate to be applied across the country, instead of several rates, and that the Bt2-16 wage increase proposed by the Wage Committee is too low, according to the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA).

6 provinces in Thailand suffer persistent poverty

A recent report from the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) revealed that efforts to address poverty and inequality in Thailand have not been entirely successful. Despite an overall reduction in inequality, some provinces are still grappling with persistent poverty issues, it found.

NESDC, in collaboration with the World Bank, recently hosted a meeting titled “Bridging the Gap: Thailand’s Path to Inclusive Prosperity”. Foreigners Purchase 10,703 Condo Units in Thailand This Year

Vichai Wiratkapan, acting director of the Real Estate Information Center (REIC), said that in the third quarter of 2023 the number of condominiums in Thailand transferred to foreigners was 3,365, an increase of 0.4%.

On Dec. 15, Thai tourist police received a missing person report from Finnish parents that they could not contact their son, as an anonymous person allegedly impersonated a Phuket police officer and asked for 7,000 euros to release their son.
