Water disruption daily from 9:30am-3:30pm daily

Hua Hin’s mayor has confirmed that the water supply to large parts of Hua Hin will be suspended from yesterday ahead of the Songkran festival, which will still go ahead and which is due to get underway from today.

Hua Hin’s water management authorities have said there will be a temporary suspension of the water supply from the Khao Laeng water production plant. The suspension, aimed at reallocating water resources to meet the festival’s heightened demand, will affect significant portions of the city from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Continued …

Prachuap facing critical water shortages, reservoirs at 21% capacity

Interior Ministry slashes mortgage, transfer fees to boost property sales

Two directives from the Interior Ministry were published in the Royal Gazette on Wednesday in a bid to boost the sale of property in line with the Cabinet’s resolution on the previous day. The directives go into immediate effect.

One of the directives states that in line with the government’s policy to support and reduce the burden on those who want to have their own homes and to boost the sale of property, the transfer fees and mortgage fees for houses, duplexes, townhouses, commercial buildings and land with buildings worth no more than 7 million baht will be set at 0.01% until Dec. 31. 500-billion-baht digital wallet scheme launches 4th quarter

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced yesterday that the government’s 500-billion-baht digital wallet initiative will be launched in full swing in the fourth quarter to stimulate economic growth. This flagship policy of the ruling Pheu Thai Party plans to distribute 10,000 baht to 50 million Thai citizens for spending within their local communities over six months.

Srettha, who also serves as the finance minister, asserted during a briefing that the policy would enhance GDP by 1.2% to 1.6%. Hua Hin Hospital warns of poor air quality in region

Hua Hin Hospital has issued a warning to residents and visitors about deteriorating air quality in the Hua Hin district. The hospital shared concerning data about the current levels of air pollution.

According to the report, the air quality index (AQI) in Hua Hin reached a worrying level of 196 as of 8am, nearly double the threshold of what is considered safe. Health standards suggest that AQI values should ideally not exceed 100 to avoid adverse health effects. Continued …

Thailand’s hotspots surge, sparking environmental concerns

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported a surge in hotspots across Thailand and neighboring countries, exceeding 1,700 points in Thailand alone as of Feb. 14. (More about Thailand’s air pollution problem in the “Environment” section below.)

This data, collected from the Suomi NPP satellite alongside other satellites, raised concerns, particularly as the majority of these hotspots are located in conservation forests and national parks. Beverage committee rejects increased alcohol sales hours

The Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee on Thursday chose not to agree to increasing the selling period of alcoholic beverages from 2pm to 5pm.

Committee secretary Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, who also heads the Department of Disease Control, said the move would violate a coup-era decree going back to 1972. That dictum limits the selling of alcoholic beverage in Thailand to two periods per day — 11am to 2pm, and 5pm to midnight — in a bid to ensure public order and safety. Continued …

Oil fund deficit headed toward Bt100 billion amid high global price

The Oil Fuel Fund will see its accumulated deficit reach 100 billion baht by April due to high fuel prices and volatile geopolitical risks, an informed source at the Energy Ministry said on Thursday. The fund has been spent on subsidizing diesel prices – at 5.30 baht per liter at present, up by 0.73 baht from 4.57 baht per liter previously.

Due to higher diesel prices in the global market over the past few days, the fuel fund needs an average of 375 million baht per day to subsidize diesel prices in the domestic market. As a result, an average of 11 billion baht is required every month. Continued …

During a meeting with members of Thai General Insurance Assn., OIC Assistant Secretary-general Apakorn Panlerd urged insurers to employ risk-management strategies in handling EV cases, as EVs operate differently from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and therefore carry higher risks. ‘World’s priciest carbon credits’ in Thailand’s first forest scheme

The Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) has purchased 400 tons of carbon credits at what is considered the world’s highest price for such a project. The bank bought 120 million baht worth of credits at 30,000 baht per ton in the BAAC carbon credit project, the first forest carbon credit initiative in Thailand.

Centered on two treebanks in Khon Kaen province, Tha Li and Ban Daeng, the project aims to meet the needs of the public and private sectors in achieving carbon neutrality and zero net greenhouse gas emissions. Continued …

PM2.5 pollution exceeds safe threshold in most of Bangkok

Levels of PM2.5 air pollution rose above the safe standard in 34 of Bangkok’s 50 districts on Wednesday.

PM2.5 exceeded the safe threshold of 37.5 micrograms per cubic meter of air and was at Orange levels (starting to affect health) across most of the city, the Bangkok Air Quality Information Center of Bangkok reported. Continued …

Loei province cracks down on illegal burning to combat toxic smog

The province of Loei issued a stern prohibition on illegal burning in a bid to mitigate the toxic smog crisis. The measure is a response to the yearly increase of forest and sugarcane farm fires, particularly between December and March, which significantly contribute to PM2.5 dust particles in the atmosphere.

Phuket officials accused of extorting Thai women and their foreign husbands

Multiple Thai women accused officials at district offices in Phuket of extorting money from them and their foreign husbands. The alleged malpractice involves overcharging them between 3,000 to 8,000 baht for marriage certificates, a substantial increase from the standard 200-baht fee.

Thailand’s interior minister halts gun license issuance for a year

A halt on issuing gun licenses for a year has been authorized by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul as part of an effort to reduce gun violence, announced Traisuree Taisaranakul, secretary to the interior minister. The directive, referred to as Por 12, adheres to the Firearms, Ammunition, Explosive, Fireworks, and Imitation Firearms Act, she added.

Cabinet approves THB3.48-trillion budget for fiscal year 2024

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the fiscal year 2024 budget of 3.48 trillion baht. The budget represents an increase of 9.3% over the 3.185 trillion baht in the previous fiscal year.

Thailand’s exports expected to contract this year

The Thai National Shippers’ Council has predicted that Thailand’s exports this year would contract 1.5% year-on-year.

Council chief Chaicharn Charoensuk said although Thailand’s exports had started to see a brighter trend, its growth would remain negative because of the contraction earlier in the year. He said exports in August had started to see growth of 2.6%, for the first time in 11 months, followed by a growth of 2.1% in September. Continued …

126 Thai companies blacklisted for labor rights violations

Nearly 130 companies in Thailand that violated labor rights have been blacklisted, while six Myanmar companies sending workers to Thailand have had their licenses revoked temporarily, according to the Ministry of Labor.

The cancellation of flight slots by several Chinese airlines following low passenger demand won’t have an impact on the government’s visa exemption policy for Chinese citizens, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said yesterday.

Prominent medical technician Panda Lab raised the alarm over a popular travel scam that has caused hundreds of victims to lose over 50 million baht. The Consumer Organization Council has outlined channels for filing complaints.
