Bangkok drops to 9th in most livable cities for expats

Bangkok slipped from 6th to 9th place among the best cities for expatriates to live and work in in 2023, according to the latest poll from InterNations, which runs an online portal selling services to expats around the world.

The Thai capital has also been dethroned by Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, ranked in 8th place globally, as the best city for expats in Southeast Asia. Continued …

PM2.5 pollution exceeds safe threshold in most of Bangkok

Levels of PM2.5 air pollution rose above the safe standard in 34 of Bangkok’s 50 districts on Wednesday.

PM2.5 exceeded the safe threshold of 37.5 micrograms per cubic meter of air and was at Orange levels (starting to affect health) across most of the city, the Bangkok Air Quality Information Center of Bangkok reported. Continued …

Loei province cracks down on illegal burning to combat toxic smog

The province of Loei issued a stern prohibition on illegal burning in a bid to mitigate the toxic smog crisis. The measure is a response to the yearly increase of forest and sugarcane farm fires, particularly between December and March, which significantly contribute to PM2.5 dust particles in the atmosphere.

These particles cause environmental and public health issues, elevating the number of respiratory disease patients in hospitals. Continued …

Phuket officials accused of extorting Thai women and their foreign husbands

Multiple Thai women accused officials at district offices in Phuket of extorting money from them and their foreign husbands. The alleged malpractice involves overcharging them between 3,000 to 8,000 baht for marriage certificates, a substantial increase from the standard 200-baht fee.

The first woman claimed that while she had not personally encountered the issue, she witnessed her friend and the friend’s foreign husband falling victim to corruption at the district office. Acting as a witness for the couple, she observed officials instructing them to pay 3,500 baht. Continued …

Thailand’s interior minister halts gun license issuance for a year

A halt on issuing gun licenses for a year has been authorized by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul as part of an effort to reduce gun violence, announced Traisuree Taisaranakul, secretary to the interior minister. The directive, referred to as Por 12, adheres to the Firearms, Ammunition, Explosive, Fireworks, and Imitation Firearms Act, she added.

The instruction is now on its way to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for approval and is expected to come into effect the day following its announcement in the Royal Gazette. Continued …

With today’s payment culture increasingly borderless, a personal digital wallet is a must if Thais are to compete in the current global digital financial landscape, according to a group of tech and digital assets experts.

Britain’s King Charles on Wednesday presented K-Pop band Blackpink with an honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the presence of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol during his official state visit to the United Kingdom, Buckingham Palace said.

A heroic teacher who defended students and faculty from an armed intruder, has drawn praise from the government.

Thawatchai Duangtham, a teaching assistant at Ban Nam Phu Hin Lat School in Chaiyaphum in northeast Thailand, bravely fought off an armed intruder, sustaining injuries to his hand and arm in the process. Deputy government spokesperson Kaenika Unjit commended his courage and sacrifice. Continued …

Cabinet approves THB3.48-trillion budget for fiscal year 2024

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the fiscal year 2024 budget of 3.48 trillion baht. The budget represents an increase of 9.3% over the 3.185 trillion baht in the previous fiscal year.

Recurring expenditure accounts for 2.535 trillion baht, or 72.85% of the total budget. Expenditures to replenish the Treasury is 118.36 billion baht, or 3.4% of the budget. Continued …

Thailand’s exports expected to contract this year

The Thai National Shippers’ Council has predicted that Thailand’s exports this year would contract 1.5% year-on-year.

Council chief Chaicharn Charoensuk said although Thailand’s exports had started to see a brighter trend, its growth would remain negative because of the contraction earlier in the year. He said exports in August had started to see growth of 2.6%, for the first time in 11 months, followed by a growth of 2.1% in September. Continued …

126 Thai companies blacklisted for labor rights violations

Nearly 130 companies in Thailand that violated labor rights have been blacklisted, while six Myanmar companies sending workers to Thailand have had their licenses revoked temporarily, according to the Ministry of Labor.

The ministry reported that 126 companies based in Thailand, 125 Thai citizens, and 20 Thai agencies had been blacklisted. Continued … 

PM defends new visa waivers despite sagging demand

The cancellation of flight slots by several Chinese airlines following low passenger demand won’t have an impact on the government’s visa exemption policy for Chinese citizens, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said yesterday.

Several Chinese airlines had requested slots to operate flights to Thailand and booked ground-handling services for their jets. However, they decided to give up their landing and take-off rights as they weren’t able to fill the flights. Continued …

Thailand, renowned for its dynamic capital Bangkok, exquisite temples, pristine mountainous regions, and a myriad of idyllic islands, has long been a staple in tourism marketing. Six Chinese nationals, who were found begging in Bangkok and are now in police custody, entered Thailand legally, taking advantage of visa-free entry for Chinese tourists.

The beggars, some of whom have wounds on their bodies, are believed to be victims or members of a transnational human trafficking network making money in major cities in Thailand through street begging, preying on the generosity of the public. Continued …

More than 300 pairs of shoes stolen from tourist resorts in Chiang Mai

Accommodation and hotel resort owners in the northern province of Chiang Mai appealed to the police to take action after more than 300 pairs of guests’ shoes were stolen in the past two months.

A Thai man who owns a hostel on Soi Saha Si Phum Place on Manee Nopparat Road in Chiang Mai shared CCTV footage on social media of thieves stealing his guests’ shoes and called for police action. Continued …

Travel scam caused loss of 50 million baht to tourists

Prominent medical technician Panda Lab raised the alarm over a popular travel scam that has caused hundreds of victims to lose over 50 million baht. The Consumer Organization Council has outlined channels for filing complaints.

Panda Lab’s Facebook page revealed that several hundred people have been victims of a prominent tour page. The victims had initially booked a tour, but it was postponed.
