Thailand’s incredible nature reserve — where a trip costs just £7

Outside my tent it’s like Jurassic Park. The thundering footsteps of what must be some primordial giant make the canvas tremble. I peek out. In the midnight darkness I can make out the silhouette of a junior bull elephant stomping below our protected camp, battering the bamboo in a pique of sexual frustration. I watch for a while, then return inside, where it takes the nocturnal serenade of an Indian nightjar to lull me back to sleep.

Here’s the really wild part. My tent is pitched in Kaeng Krachan, Thailand’s largest national park and one of the world’s newest UNESCO heritage sites. It’s in the southwest, a £12 taxi ride from the golden beaches of the ritzy resort of Hua Hin, itself a £1 train ride from Bangkok. This could be Thailand’s most accessible, yet biodiverse, jungle experience. Continued …

Why mango sticky rice is one of Thailand’s most beloved summer dishes

There are said to be more than 200 types of mangoes grown in Thailand. But when it comes to creating one of the country’s most beloved desserts, khao nieow mamuang, connoisseurs say few varieties will do.

Better known to the rest of the world as mango sticky rice, it’s a deceptively simple dish. Slices of sweet, ripe mango are set next to a mound of glutinous rice that’s topped with a coconut-based cream sauce and a light sprinkling of yellow mung beans. Continued …

Songkran brings 435-million-baht boost to PKK

The assistant national police chief said on Monday that many people have started making their way back to Bangkok and other big cities, opening the door to more accidents and heavy traffic. Tyrant’s days are numbered as Karen soldiers burn the hated Myanmar flag in Myawaddy

The revolution in Myanmar against the brutal junta regime took a huge step forward in the last week. On Monday, Karen soldiers pulled down the despised Myanmar flag only introduced in 2010 by the military. In short, they burned it and replaced it with a blue, white and red Karen Union flag.

The fall of Myawaddy was completed at the end of the week. It came when the 275th Battalion was routed under rocket, drone and grenade attack, further weakening the junta. Its already cratered economy lost a key border trading point, which, in turn, puts pressure on supplying Yangon, the country’s main city. Continued …

Authorities plan for potential energy cost surge amid Israel-Iran conflict

Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce has issued directives to state bodies to devise strategies to mitigate potential surges in energy costs in the event of an escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict.

The directive follows Iran’s missile and drone assault on Israel, a retaliatory move against Israel’s alleged attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus earlier this month. This marked the first direct attack by Iran on Israel in a longstanding shadow conflict, typically characterized by Iran launching assaults on Israel via terror proxies. Continued …

Inside the numbers: the potential of a Phuket property bubble

One of the most common questions I am asked these days is about a potential Phuket real estate bubble. While it’s a popular buzz term, so many who ask the question don’t understand what a bubble is.

The most notable real estate bubble in recent history was the subprime housing crisis in the United States in 2007. In other sectors, there have been bubbles like the dot.com crisis of 2000 and 2018’s crypto-crash. Continued …

Thailand eyes value of durian exports of 1 trillion baht

Thailand is preparing to enact legislation that will regulate the export of young durians in an attempt to serve markets with only the highest quality fruit. The move comes in response to the growing demand for durian, particularly in China, which is increasing steadily each year.

While Thailand has long been a leader in durian exports, the emergence of competitors in ASEAN and China, who are beginning to cultivate and export durians to the market, poses a challenge. To address this, Thailand should focus on maintaining the quality of exported durians and expanding its market share. The current government’s goal is to achieve one trillion baht in durian exports in the future. Continued …

How to Experience Wildlife Responsibly When Traveling

Brought to Japan as a six-month-old baby from Thailand, the elephant Miyako has spent 50 years living in cramped, solitary confinement at the Utsunomiya Zoo about one hour outside of Tokyo.

Unlike elephants in the wild who live in extended family groups and wander for miles on a daily basis, Miyako spends her days standing listlessly on a small concrete platform amid her own feces. And when she’s not exhibited on that platform for zoo visitors, Miyako is locked in a small, dark indoor space. Continued …

Thailand’s Challenge with Alcohol Regulation: Seeking a Balanced Approach

No less than four draft laws on alcohol control will soon go before Parliament, but none appear to contain a middle path that will satisfy everyone. Two drafts, one proposed by the Public Health Ministry’s Disease Control Department (DCD) and the other by an anti-alcohol group, push for strict control – apparently out of concern about health and other impacts of drinking.

The two other drafts, one written by a pro-alcohol group and the other by Move Forward MP and craft-beer champion Taopiphop Limjittrakorn, seek to break monopoly-like conditions in the industry, which is dominated by just a handful of brewing giants. Continued …

Put culture first in old town revamps

Will Thailand’s old towns include their old communities as they are renovated? In many of these important districts, institutional owners of land are apt to evict legacy tenants to make way for redevelopment, threatening vintage architecture and eroding vibrant local cultures and ways of life.

But a beacon of hope emerged two decades ago, when the families living in an historic block near Bangkok’s Chinatown negotiated with their landlord to be allowed to pursue their own collective plan and remain in place. Continued …

Thai labor unions criticize new daily minimum wage

The Thai Labor Solidarity Confederation (TLSC) and State Enterprises Workers’ Relations Confederation (SEWRC) expressed disapproval of the new daily minimum wage of 400 baht approved by the tripartite wage committee. The wage increase is only applicable to some areas in 10 provinces, initiating a wave of criticism from the labor unions, who argue that this decision is unjust.

According to the unions, this wage discrepancy among workers within the same province will generate inequalities. They argue that despite the cost of basic commodities and services remaining consistent across the provinces, the wage disparity will create an unfair system. They urge the government and Labor Ministry to eliminate wage inequalities and maintain a uniform daily minimum wage of no less than 400 baht (US$11), ideally 492 baht (US$14). Continued …

Phuket’s Old Town seems closer to Europe than Asia

What’s there to say about Phuket – if you know, you know right? I thought so too until my most recent visit – my seventh visit to Thailand, and second specifically to Phuket.

Where you would have seen “Aussie Bar” signs, you now see signs for KBAC (kvass, a fermented Russian bread drink, it’s delicious). Continued …
