Thai Tourism Needs To Learn The Lessons Of History

The Thai tourism industry ended 2023 with 27.6 million visitors, just off the target of 30 million. It probably would have hit the target had it not been for incidents and events directly related to conflicts and violence, also known as “external shocks.”

In spite of irrefutable proof of the deep and lasting impact of these repeated external shocks, the industry has gone back to business as usual, with a false sense of complacency about the revival and its projected duration. Continued …

Thailand’s Famed Elephant Tourism Is Controversial — Here’s How to Pick an Ethical Sanctuary

In Thailand, it’s very easy to encounter an elephant. Some sites allow quiet observation, as you admire the massive animals from afar. Other tourist venues offer activities like feeding, riding, or bathing with elephants. Many places toss around the term “ethical” when describing the encounters, but they often are not the sanctuaries they promote.

(Editor note: Expat News visited the Elephant Nature Park outside of Chiang Mai, and we have to dispute one warning about not physically interacting with the elephants. Unlike some “sanctuaries”, where the elephants are basically penned in – or chained or caged, pachyderms at Elephant Nature Park mostly are allowed to roam free in the mountainous jungles of the park and visitors are allowed to mingle with them for bathing, feeding and walks. These are rescued elephants and their young, and as long as there is no riding of the elephants, we see no problem with this activity.)

“Visiting an animal sanctuary while traveling can be a great way to support local animal welfare and conservation efforts, but you need to do your homework because there are many bogus sanctuaries operating that can lure in well-meaning and unsuspecting tourists,” Wendy Higgins, director of international media for Humane Society International. This development was recorded yesterday through the satellite-based Check Foon application, developed by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Samut Songkhram experienced the highest dust level, peaking at 84.1 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) at 8am. This level significantly surpassed the safe threshold of 50µg/m³, making it the only province to reach a code red status, indicating potentially harmful air. Most other provinces affected by the haze had an orange or unhealthy status. Continued …

In its little over three months in power, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s government has faced a surfeit of challenges, as if it has been in power for over a year. Some observers say it may appear this way because this government has not had a “honeymoon period” with the media or the public, as enjoyed by its predecessors.

Thailand to move away from foreign tourism and rely more on domestic travelers

Thailand’s tourism industry faces a 40% decline in revenues this year compared to 2019, prompting a reevaluation. A disappointing response from Chinese tourists and a lack of Western enthusiasm have necessitated a focus on domestic travel and second-tier cities.

With foreign tourism visitor and income projections for 2023 being revised downward and projected to be nearly 40% off 2019 revenue figures, with fewer visitors, off by 30%, and lower spenders because of an absence of Western tourists, Thailand’s newly appointed tourism agency chief is signaling a move toward more domestic tourism as she plots a course to 2027, when she hopes 40% of the country’s tourism income will be generated at home, while the tourist sector itself will grow to a whopping 27% of GDP. How Buddhist Monks are Protecting Thailand’s Environment

It’s 5:50am and I’m in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand, following a single-file column of russet-robed monks as they tread barefoot down the red-dirt road that runs between their monastery and the nearby village. The first greetings of the day are all of the canine variety. Farm dogs look up from nipping fleas to bark at the monks as they wind their way through the dawn.

The monks are accompanied by their own companions, four scruffy dogs that hang around the monastery and seem to have appointed themselves the monks’ guardians. When one of the farm dogs gets a little too excited, baring its fangs and developing a raw edge to its bark, the monastery mutts swiftly pin it onto its back. Continued …
