Training camps planned for aggressive wild elephants

The national parks and wildlife chief has announced plans for training centers to discipline aggressive wild elephants involved in the increasing number of attacks on people.

Director-general Attapon Charoenchansa said there were between 4,013 and 4,422 wild elephants in 16 forest complexes in Thailand and they posed serious problems, unlike domesticated elephants. Continued …

Ko Muang Phet, a magnificent albino buffalo owned by Damrongsak Morakot in Phetchaburi province, recently made headlines when it was bought for a whopping 18 million baht.

Renowned for its striking beauty and colossal size, the buffalo is known for its remarkable breeding capability because 90% of its offspring will be born with albino traits. KResearch projects Thai economy in 2024 may grow by 2.8 %

The Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch) has downgraded its Thai economic projection for 2024 to a growth of 2.8 %, from its previous forecast of 3.1 % issued in December.

Burin Adulwattana, managing director and chief economist of KResearch, said, “The global economy in 2024 is expected to grow at the same level as was seen in 2023. Global trade is likely to resume growth while global interest rates will gradually decline as inflation falls to the target level set by central banks worldwide. China continues to face the challenge of its ailing property sector, thus far unresolved amid its weak economy, which would lead to ebbing domestic demand and price reductions by manufacturers to maintain their market share.” Continued …

Wage committee unlikely to raise Thai minimum wage to 400 baht

An anticipated meeting of the tripartite wage committee later this month is expected to sanction a second increase in the minimum daily wage for this year. However, the Employers’ Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry (EconThai) suggests the approved hike is unlikely to take the wage to the 400 baht mark.

According to Thanit Sorat, the vice-chair of EconThai, the committee, comprised of government representatives, employers, and employees, will convene on March 26. Household debt surge impacts property and auto sectors

Air Asia has announced a significant expansion of its flights between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. Travelers can look forward to daily flights from May 4 through June 14.

Hua Hin love triangle tragedy: Millionaire and secretary’s deaths linked to affair

The police suspect that a love affair and jealousy may have been the motives behind the deaths of a millionaire and her secretary in a house located in the Hua Hin district of Prachuap Kiri Khan province. Thai man survives black bear attack during ant egg hunt

A Thai man survived an attack by an Asian black bear while hunting for ant eggs within the Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in the Isaan province of Buriram on the weekend.

The victim’s wife shared details of the incident on Sunday. She explained that her 60-year-old husband, Phumin Joysaku, entered the forest in the morning to search for ant eggs. The eggs and pupae of weaver ants are also known as Khai Mod Daeng in Thai. Continued …

Thailand’s gold prices hit new high, breaking 37,000 baht mark

Gold prices continue to surge in Thailand, with the cost of gold ornaments breaking the 37,000 baht mark for the first time. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reported a significant increase compared to the previous day’s rate, where the selling price of gold ornaments reached 37,100 baht per baht-weight as of the latest update on March 11.

The domestic buying price for gold bars was set at 36,500 baht per baht-weight, with the selling price slightly higher at 36,600 baht. Progress on 6 Thai FTAs now under negotiation

Thailand is negotiating 11 free trade agreements, including five related to upgrading existing FTAs, along with developing six new FTAs, as the kingdom aims to expand trade and investment with key trading partner countries near and distant.

According to information from the Department of Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce, Thailand appears to have successfully negotiated and implemented a total of 15 FTAs with trading partners from 18 countries or territories. Two women found shot dead at property in Hua Hin

Police are currently investigating the deaths of two women found shot at a property in Hua Hin. The deceased, identified as a 63-year-old businesswoman and her 46-year-old secretary, were discovered on Sunday by the son of the older woman, after he grew concerned over his inability to contact his mother for several days.

Traveling from Bangkok to Hua Hin, he arrived at his mother’s home to find it securely locked, with the air conditioning still running. Upon entering the house through a back window, he was met with a foul smell, prompting him to alert local authorities. Continued …

Anthrax outbreak in Laos prompts raw meat warning in Thailand

Kenika Ounjit, a deputy government spokesperson, yesterday revealed a public health warning from the Department of Livestock Development. The warning urged the public to refrain from consuming raw meat. This follows a report of an anthrax outbreak in Laos.

According to the report, three cases of anthrax were identified on March 4 in the Soukhoumma district of the Lao province of Champasak. Hazardous smog in 48 provinces

Forty-eight provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 on Monday morning and 11 provinces, mostly in the north, faced red levels of pollution, with Chiang Mai suffering the most.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported at 10am on Monday that the highest level of particulate matter, 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), was detected in the northern province of Chiang Mai, at 125.3 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Boy, 14, arrested for shooting death of teen in Hua Hin

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in downtown Hua Hin last Thursday evening. Hua Hin Police Station launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on Naresdamri close to the entrance to Hua Hin Fishing Pier.

Frequent use of mosquito spray urged as dengue death toll rises

In a warning against the spread of dengue fever, the Public Health Ministry has urged people to protect themselves by using anti-mosquito sprays and lotions.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Sunday that at the latest meeting of the National Communicable Disease Control committee, he learned that the number of dengue patients this year has risen to 17,783 cases, more than double the number compared to the same period last year. Someone is poisoning Rayong’s dogs, 36 dead so far

Three dog owners in Rayong’s Nikhom Phatthana district have asked police to take action against those responsible for poisoning their pets in separate incidents, resulting in the deaths of 36 animals. Somjit Palapol, a durian farmer, claims that his 19 dogs were poisoned on March 6, 17 of which died.

Despite increased spending by tourists and tax incentives to encourage buying, Thailand’s retail sector is under strain. The sector, facing the challenges of a surge of substandard goods from China, is burdening local entrepreneurs.

Most of the 12,000 Thais employed in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are illegal workers who were lured with promises of high pay. There are only about 4,500 who are fully and correctly documented.

Bangkok bus operator approves purchase of 3,390 EV buses

State-run public bus operator Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) is procuring 3,390 electric vehicles (EV) to replace its aging fleet that has been in service for more than three decades, Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Friday.

She said the BMTA board at its meeting on Tuesday had approved the purchase of new buses as an urgent agenda, in line with BMTA’s policy of reducing environmental impact from its operations in the metropolitan area. Continued …

When the lights dimmed on the 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand awards in Bangkok on Dec. 13, history had been made. Chudaree Debhakam of Baan Tepa had become the first Thai female chef to lead a two-Michelin-star restaurant and Garima Arora the first female Indian chef to clinch two stars for her dining room Gaa.

Both women are very much in the minority, not just within Bangkok’s culinary community but in the international food world. Facebook dispute leads to teenager being shot dead in downtown Hua Hin

A dispute that started on Facebook resulted in a 16-year-old teenager being shot dead in Hua Hn on Thursday night. The incident, which also left another person seriously injured, unfolded on Nares Damri Road in the municipal area of Hua Hin.

The altercation began when a local teenager became embroiled in an argument on Facebook over derogatory remarks made about his sister. 54 of 77 provinces face hazardous smog levels

Fifty-four out of 77 provinces in Thailand were blanketed with hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, with 27 provinces, mostly in the north and the northeast, experiencing red (seriously harmful) levels of pollution.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported on Thursday that the highest level of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) was detected in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai, at 128.8 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. Bangkok’s eastern and central bus terminals set for relocation

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced plans on Tuesday to move the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) and the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) to the Krung Thep Abhiwat Central Terminal. The intention behind the move is to offer more convenience to travelers, as the Central Terminal can be easily reached using the MRT electronic rail system.

Black panther spotted in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park

A black panther sighting near Phanoen Thung in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park has been reported by the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). BMW to establish first Southeast Asian EV battery factory in Thailand

Chiang Mai tops world’s most polluted cities due to rampant forest fires

Chiang Mai has been blanketed by worsening haze, catapulting it to the top of the list of the world’s 10 most polluted cities. The thick smog is a direct consequence of forest fires that have been burning unabated for approximately two weeks.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) detected a total of 1,420 hotspots on Monday alone. Of these, 193 were located in Chiang Mai. Satellite information revealed that the hotspots were distributed across various areas, with 490 in forest conservation zones, 375 in forest reserve areas, 237 in agricultural regions, 186 in land reform areas, and the remaining in community areas. Enormous Damage In Chiang Mai National Park Fire

Interior Minister Anutin Charnivarikul said yesterday he is closely following the forest fire at Ob Luang National Park in Chiang Mai’s Hot district, with this causing enormous damage both in the forested areas and triggering dust and smoke problems that has spread to many provinces.

Firefighters and helicopters halt huge Chiang Mai forest fire

Some 250 firefighters backed by two helicopters on Tuesday managed to halt a forest blaze that raged through 33,000 rai of Ob Luang National Park in Chiang Mai’s Hot district.

The fires were put out just a day after the Third Army Area deployed troops to help fight the blaze and deter local villagers from setting new fires in the vast national park. Wildfires in the province of Tak have intensified, expanding across nine districts and prompting coordinated emergency responses to combat the flames and prevent hazardous smog, including the dangerous PM2.5 particles. The province’s governor Somchai Kitcharoenrungroj has mobilized all units for swift action to contain the wildfires within a limited area to minimize damage and reduce smoke haze.

CP All has revealed business profit results for 2023 for 7-Eleven, in which the convenience stores had an overall income of 399 billion baht, having a gross profit of 112 billion baht and increasing from the previous year by 16.1%.

650,000 people treated for PM2.5-induced illnesses so far this year

More than 650,000 people have received medical treatment for illnesses caused by air pollution since the beginning of this year, particularly related to PM2.5, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Of these, more than 300,000 had respiratory diseases, about 80,000 heart and brain diseases, over 110,000 eye infections and irritations, and over 140,000 had skin infections. Continued …

On the second day of a light salvage mission undertaken by United States and Thai navies to remove armaments and other objects from HTMS Sukhothai, which capsized and sank in stormy seas late 2022, killing 24 sailors with five others missing, the corvette’s nameplate, a Buddha image and some documents were brought to the surface.

Thai exports in January see highest growth in 19 months

Thailand’s exports in January expanded for the sixth consecutive month, totaling US$22.6 billion (815.7 billion baht), and growing 10% year on year. Ministry of Commerce permanent secretary Keerati Rushchano said on Friday that the growth in January was the highest in 19 months, since June 2022.

However, the country’s imports totaled $25.4 billion (914.9 billion baht) in January, an increase of 2.6% year on year, with a trade deficit of $2.7 billion (99.2 billion baht), according to the official. Continued …

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Friday poured cold water on plans to relocate Bangkok Port out of the city, warning of disruption to exports.

Chinese automakers were the top three electric vehicle (EV) brands for Thai people last year, according to the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC).

Thai Airways records recovery with US$782 million profit in 2023

‘Thailand too dependent on a few farm export items and markets’

Thailand needs to diversify its agricultural exports, as it currently relies on a handful of items and only a few overseas markets, Deputy Commerce Minister Napintorn Srisunpang said on Thursday.

85% of tourists to Thailand now don’t need a visa

Within the past six months, the Thai government has made mammoth strides to ease the travel process for millions more foreign tourists. Previously, visa-exempt tourist travel was mainly restricted to the traditional or old markets such as the European Union, the UK, the U.S. and Australia. But now holidaymakers from Russia receive 90 days, needing neither prior approval nor a visa on arrival, while Chinese and Indian citizens (and several smaller countries) are awarded 30 days without any bureaucracy in a mutually-agreed deal.
