Some Reasons Not to Panic About a Thai Demographic Collapse

China’s demographics alone – even if you ignore its increasing marginalization from global trade, its dependency on food and energy imports, and President Xi Jinping’s utter gutting of the bureaucracy of anyone who might bring him accurate but unwelcome news – could collapse its economy in the coming decades. Between now and 2050, by conservative estimates, its working-age population will shrink by 220 million people, around a fifth.

That has justifiably sparked major concerns about whether the Chinese state can survive in the coming decades. Thailand will also experience a demographic decline, which has led to similar doom-ish predictions about the country’s future stability. Continued …

The one thing watermelon experts do to pick sweet ones

Don’t worry, it is not just you. It is hard to pick a good watermelon. So much of what determines its sweetness is beyond your control. And what is in your control may go against your instincts. It is a challenge to your sense of free will, an exercise in letting go, a gamble at the market.

Also, it’s just a watermelon. Everything will be OK. And if you do manage to pick the perfect melon, everything will be great in that sticky-fruit-juices-down-your-arm-on-a-summer-afternoon way. Continued …

Thailand’s most important economic goal

Any relatively new finance minister, such as Pichai Chunhavajira, comes into office facing a crowded agenda: Maintain good relations with the central bank, ensure strong revenue collections and pursue fiscally responsible policies, manage customs and excise.

Keep an eye on inflation, which reached 1.54% in May but eased to 0.62% in June, and meet the joint monetary policy target agreed with the Bank of Thailand. Improve access to finance. Continued …

Analysts see headwinds persisting until mid-2025

A high level of non-performing loans (NPLs), slow loan growth and rising household debt will continue to pressure banks until the first half of next year, as a reduction in consumer purchasing power and rising living costs will affect not only small businesses but also large companies, analysts say.

Krungsri Securities (KS) has downgraded the banking sector to “bearish” from “neutral”, although most banks reported better than expected net profits in the second quarter, due to “increasing asset quality risks”, said analyst Chayaporn Tocharoen. Continued …

In 2023, Thailand saw one of the worst drops in FDI in the world

Foreign direct investment (FDI), a key barometer for economic growth for developing countries, has seen a decline of about 2% in 2023, with Thailand’s share of FDI inflow declining among the highest in the world, according to latest data released by United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD), with ASEAN continuing to remain in the positive trajectory witnessing a 1.2% uptick in its FDI to US$ 226.3 billion.

UNCTAD, in a report released recently, said that global FDI in 2023 decreased marginally, by 2%, to $1.3 trillion. This headline figure was affected by wild swings in financial flows through a small number of European conduit economies; excluding the effect of these conduits, global FDI flows were more than 10% lower than in 2022. Call to educate public over nuclear push

A new public perception of nuclear technology in the power sector is needed and crucial for the Energy Ministry’s efforts to push for small modular reactor (SMR) projects in the 2024 power development plan, say energy and nuclear technology experts.

SMR is a type of nuclear power technology with a capacity of up to 300 megawatts per unit, about one-third of the generating capacity of larger, traditional nuclear power reactors, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Continued …

The pitfalls of ‘going nuclear’

Reports that the energy ministry is conducting a feasibility study into developing small nuclear power plants have been met with mixed reactions – from welcome, mainly by the energy and industrial sectors, to reluctance and fear.

The split response was anticipated. Although Thailand has aspired to “go nuclear” for almost four decades, valid fears – solidified by tragic accidents at nuclear power plants in Chernobyl in Ukraine in 1986 and Fukushima in Japan in 2011, as well as domestic accidents involving radioactive waste – remain about whether Thai-style management can cope with technology so reliant on highly efficient, transparent and trustworthy leadership. Thailand’s July 15 visa revolution offers radical benefits for travelers, more to come

A senior Thai civil servant at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the last week has brought home the significance of the crucial visa changes ushered in on July 15. Undeniably, the changes offering a 60-day visa exemption to travelers from 103 countries extendable to 90 days and the new DTV visa are radical departures.

For instance, on the 60-day exemption, Naruechai Ninnart explained that this was a new visa from the previous 30-day one. In short, it allowed for business engagement and ad hoc working. Similarly, with the DTV or Destination Thailand visa, here is a visa for genuine freelancers or digital nomads that for Bt10,000 offers them the ability to enter and exit the country for five years, staying for up to 180 days at a time. Rice is the star of Thai cuisine, but it’s always served in reasonable portions of about 150 grams, or 200 calories. “Thai people take time to chew each mouthful of rice thoroughly, at least 15 to 20 times. This promotes satiety and prevents overeating,” explains Emily. Continued …

Farmers in Thailand look indoors to plant strawberries, veggies and cannabis

In the past year, pedestrians in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Road have been drawn to a pinkish hue from a large window on the busy street. Many of them peer through the window and are surprised to see dozens of layers of strawberry plants stacked high behind the glass.

“People are attracted by the window, and they are more than welcome to come in and find out more about Varmers,” said Geert Liezenga, founder and chief executive of the company that grows strawberries through vertical farming. Continued …

German documentary in underage sex case blocked in Thailand

Deputy National Police Chief Gen. Surachate Hakparn, also known by the public as “Big Joke”, is to take over the investigation into an underage sex scandal in Pattaya exposed in a German TV documentary aired in recent days, which targeted Pattaya as a haven for sex tourists and those seeking under age sex services.

It comes as Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and local business operators are concerned about the damage being done to Thailand’s image across the world and its known effect within the already struggling foreign tourism industry. Continued …

5.1-billion-baht soft power budget to be reduced

The government will revise the 5.1-billion-baht budget that was earmarked for national arts and culture promotion projects by the National Soft Power Development Committee (NSPDC) as it is considered too much, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Monday.

Tourist rubles ensure warm welcome for Russians in Thailand

Ask any Russian person which country in Southeast Asia they have heard about and you’d probably hear “Thailand.” Russian tourists are crowding its beaches, bars and even its Orthodox churches.

That’s not just a sign of Thailand’s legendary reputation for hospitality and knack for catering to foreign visitors that has earned the country the moniker “Land of Smiles.” Thailand welcomed 11.4 million foreign tourists in 2022. But with Russians increasingly limited on where they can visit because of international restrictions imposed on Moscow relating to the war in Ukraine, Thailand has kept its doors open. Continued …

Thailand must adapt to meet its unique demographic challenge

Thailand is facing a unique demographic problem unlike other aging countries in northeast Asia and Europe. The country is growing old before it attains economic prosperity, a situation pointed out by a recent article in The Economist.

Unlike their counterparts in the developed world, the country will have to grapple with the challenge of supporting a burgeoning elderly population without the financial cushion that comes with high GDP per capita. Thailand had a GDP per person of just $7,000 in 2021, while 14% of its population was already 65 or over, setting it on course for a demographic dilemma that could have far-reaching implications for its socio-economic fabric. Future tech that could change face of aging Thailand in next 10 years

With Thailand well on the way to becoming a “super-aged society”, technology and innovation will play a crucial role in enhancing quality of life and promoting an age-inclusive country over the next 10 years.

The elderly are projected to make up 30% of Thailand’s population by 2036, bringing big changes in society, the economy and public life. Continued …

Thai Salesman PM Srettha and Diplomatic Faux Pas in China

We are seeing more of the type of diplomacy the new prime minister is engaging abroad and there is valid cause to be concerned. PM Srettha Thavisin was in Beijing a few days ago as part of the gathering of leaders from 130 nations attending China’s 10th anniversary of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

It was there that the new PM, who was on a four-day visit to China, spoke at a Thai Board of Investment (BOI)-organized forum in Beijing in front of many potential Chinese investors and verbally degraded Thailand’s stature by describing China as Thailand’s “elder brother.” Continued …

Thai exports at US$46 billion in first 7 months of 2023

Thai exports amounted to US$46.18 billion between January and July, driven by free trade agreements (FTAs), Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) Director-general Ronnarong Phoolpipat announced this week. The top five FTAs contributing to this figure were:

  1. ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA): The agreement’s total value was U$16.49 billion, accounting for 72.7% of its utilization. Major exports under this agreement included automobiles for transportation (weighing less than 5 tons), sugar, petroleum oils, oils from bituminous minerals, and cars for personal transportation (1,500 – 2,500 cc). Exports unexpectedly rise for 2nd straight month

Thailand’s customs-based exports unexpectedly increased 2.1% in September from a year earlier, helped by higher shipments of rice and farm products, the commerce ministry said today, despite sluggish global demand.

The reading compared with a forecast for a 1.75% year-on-year drop for September in a Reuters poll, and followed August’s 2.6% increase. Continued …

Thai auto exports threatened by Israel-Hamas conflict

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is closely monitoring the Israel-Hamas conflict for fear that if the war expands to include other neighboring Arab nations, Thai vehicle exports could be affected late this year.

Vehicles are the leading Thai exports to Israel in terms of value, at US$243 million per year. In the first eight months of this year (Jan.-Aug.), Thailand exported $124 million worth of vehicles and auto parts to Israel, representing 1% of total Thai auto exports. Continued …

Digital wallet scheme and minimum wage hike under fire

The Thai government of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has faced significant challenges since coming to power seven weeks ago, with various commitments made during their campaign now under scrutiny. A crucial task includes the repatriation of Thai citizens affected by the Middle East conflict and the ongoing Israel-Hamas unrest.

The government’s promise to hike the daily minimum wage to 400 baht this year and 600 baht within four years may not be enough to entice Thais working abroad to return, considering wages in their host countries are higher. Continued …

Prime Minister defends controversial 10,000-baht digital handout scheme

Thailand’s Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, defended the government’s decision to proceed with the controversial 10,000-baht digital currency handout scheme on Monday, in spite of mounting criticism.

Primarily, critics have been concerned about the scheme’s lack of transparency, particularly regarding its funding source. The PM, who also holds the position of finance minister, dismissed these concerns, stating, “I insist the policy will go ahead.” Continued …

Thailand brings in elephant patrols to protect tourists in Ayutthaya as visitor numbers fall

The Royal Thai Police is turning to elephant patrols in response to a directive by PM Srettha Thavisin to upgrade security for tourists in Thailand. It comes with visitor numbers from China down substantially in October following the Paragon Shopping Center shooting in the Pathum Wan area of Bangkok on Oct. 3.

The latest incident saw police in Lopburi province arrest a local 26-year-old after he snatched the handbag of a 37-year-old UK visitor as police nationwide remain on high alert to protect the Kingdom’s image. Continued …

Visa-Free Visits for Russian Tourists Extended Nov 1

Starting on Nov. 1, Thailand will allow Russian tourists to stay visa-free for up to 90 days. The move comes as tourists from the country have had increasingly few options for travel, given Moscow’s war on Ukraine, the impact of sanctions, travel restrictions, and a weakening ruble.

News that Thailand was extending visa-free stays from 30 to 90 days came late last week just before the country’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing last week. Continued …

Government urged to boost domestic tourism as war in Middle East hits arrivals

The government is being advised to roll out stimulus packages to boost domestic tourism, to encourage more Thais to travel within the country, to offset the potential drop off in tourist arrivals during the last quarter of this year, due to external factors such as the war in Ukraine and the war between Israel and Hamas.

Chamnan Srisawat, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT), said that the prospect of an all-out war between Israel and Hamas will affect the global economy and the Thai tourism business, as tourists will cancel or postpone their visits because they feel unsafe. Continued …

5 Floating Markets In And Around Bangkok You Must Visit

Water was the primary mode of transportation long before roads connected destinations. It was a way of life in Thailand, Vietnam, and several other countries, primarily in South and Southeast Asia. In such countries, floating markets emerged where merchants could trade ordinary commodities.

Many waterside towns sprung up around these floating markets. While they thrived until the early 18th century, many closed for business or were forced to relocate to land in the latter half. Many floating markets were sacrificed as building rail tracks and roadways took precedence, but several markets are still thriving. Here are five floating markets in and around Bangkok that you must add to your travel bucket list. Continued …

News that Hua Hin’s airport would not be accepting international flights for 2-3 years came as a shock to many local expats, who had been told flights might start later this year. It turns out there is a lot more work to do to bring the airport up to international standards, including a major reconstruction of the highway tunnel supporting the airport runway (that’s sure to foul up traffic on the important north-south expressway). Your comments at aim@hhexpatnews.com are welcome.

30,000 private jet flights to Hua Hin? Really?

“About the article on Hua Hin Airport expansion, why we don’t trust the media: ‘Currently, Hua Hin Airport handles about 30,000 private jets a year, so it has the potential to grow, [Nopasit Chakpitak, president of Aeronautical Radio of Thailand] said.

“Really. If flights were 10 hrs/day, 30,000 flights/year is eight per hour. I live in Hua Hin, and frequent the airport area and very rarely hear jets. I’d be surprised if there was even one single private jet. Ok, maybe two! – PB

“If they aspire to an international airport status, they must first remove the local mafia who harrass incoming passengers and intimidate Grab drivers from entering the airport property.” – RM

“The expansion of the Hua Hin airport and its international flights reminds me on the sky train and high speed train projects: The message is always next year or within 2 years will start. This goes over a decade.” – AZ

In bed with the enemy

The news that Pheu Thai is now in an alliance with the Bhumjai Thai Party to form a government should come as no surprise to longtime observers of Thai politics. Machiavellian measures always trumps ideals in this world.

But it does leave a bad taste in the mouth for people who took Pheu Thai at face value over the past few years as they attacked the coalition parties while they were in the opposition. BJT was one of the major targets of their ire and everyone from party leaders to rank and file MPs took turns to criticize their erstwhile enemy. Continued …

Thailand says no rice export halt, to benefit from India’s export ban

Travel publisher puts Thailand on its “no list” for 2023

Travel publisher Fodor has put Thailand on its “no list” for 2023, advising readers to avoid the overcrowding in tourist hotspots such as Koh Phi Phi, access point for Maya Bay, and dive mecca Koh Tao, where the authorities introduced a tourist user fee in 2022 to thin the crowds.

Although Thailand is likely to miss its target for 2023 of hosting 30 million foreign tourists, as fewer visitors from China have returned than was expected, the crowds are back, so if you are planning a trip to one of the country’s islands, it might be wise to consider a lesser-known destination such as Koh Kood. The journey of chilies to Thailand

The vibrant Thai cuisine, known for its distinctive combination of flavors – sweet, sour, salty, and spicy – owes much of its kick to an ingredient that was surprisingly not indigenous to the region: the chili pepper.

The chili pepper’s journey to Thailand is a fascinating tale of global exploration and cultural fusion. This voyage of the chili began around 1492 when Christopher Columbus, the Genoese explorer, first encountered these fiery fruits in the Caribbean while he was in search of India and its prized spices. Interestingly, Columbus and his crew initially mistook chilies for a type of pepper – hence the name “chili pepper.” Continued …

It’s called ‘Water Festival’ just because April is hot

Songkran is an elephant and everyone can be one of the blind men fumbling around for its shape. Road accidents make it a nightmare festival for related authorities or rescue workers. Old folks in rural areas count the days for the time when they can see their beloved youngsters again. Teenagers long to be extra-playful with the opposite sex. Foreigners yearn to let loose.

UNESCO has approved the inclusion of the Songkran festival in the tentative list of Intangible Cultural Heritages (ICH) for consideration in December this year. On the one hand, it can be understood why. On the other, it’s somewhat hard to pinpoint the cultural or artistic values that make Songkran deserve it more than, say, some other exotic shows in Thailand or abroad that wow foreign visitors. As the crowd built up in the evening, police manning checkpoints were ordered to close off the street and prevent more visitors from entering to reduce congestion in the area. Continued …

ESG: Poison or Panacea for Thai Business?

Considering the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) framework has been increasingly important in Thailand in recent years. Thai businesses are still learning to fully comprehend the need to integrate ESG factors into their operations in order to safeguard their long-term viability, comply with international standards, and reduce exposure to potential and market threats.

The ESG framework represents a company’s actions and impact on the environment, society, and corporate governance. In fact, the three factors are seen as key indicators of long-term sustainability and financial performance for all firms. However, adopting an ESG framework and integrating ESG considerations into business operations can be challenging for various companies. Continued …

Economy faces export clogs with rules in China and ‘green imperialism’ from the European Union

The Thai central bank raised interest rates on Wednesday even with inflation coming in at only 3.8% for February. The country’s economic ministries, in the meantime, have prioritized the promotion of Thai exports against a backdrop of a more risk-averse world banking system, higher borrowing rates and reduced demand.

Thai exports are also facing challenges in China and Europe due to local regulations and what a legal expert has described as the ‘regulatory imperialism’ of the European Union.

On Tuesday, it was announced that the Fiscal Policy Office has been tasked with closely monitoring trends and potential impediments in the export sector, as the ministry acknowledged that economic growth in 2023 was now dependent on foreign tourism and an uptick in domestic spending. Continued …

Western slowdown to weigh on Thai production

Thai exports are likely to be indirectly affected by banking problems in the U.S. and Europe, slowing an already sluggish sector and causing a drop in the Manufacturing Production Index (MPI), according to the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

The index dipped 0.45% to 98.9 points in February on a monthly basis, with the March MPI unlikely to improve, as foreign demand for Thai products remains weak amid a sluggish economy in the U.S. and European countries, said Warawan Chitaroon, director-general of the OIE. Continued …

Thailand’s Long and Bumpy Road to Nuclear Energy Adoption

In many respects, Thailand is an extremely fortunate nation. It is located in the heart of Southeast Asia, with no threat of food shortages, no major state or non-state enemies, and no severe risks of natural disasters (this point, though, is debatable as Thailand is said to be one of the top 10 countries in the world most impacted by climate change). But when it comes to energy security, Thais should be concerned.

Thailand is, after all, a net importer of oil and natural gas, and its existing reserves – most notably the one in the Gulf of Thailand – are running low. To satisfy its people’s skyrocketing demand, the Thai government does not have much of a choice but to keep relying on imported energy sources (and grudgingly accepting rising prices in the process). The air quality index produced by Swiss company IQAir revealed that Chiang Mai had a reading of 216 at noon yesterday, which is considered “very unhealthy.” Anything above 51 is a cause for concern. In comparison, Bangkok had a reading of 80, while Birmingham and London had readings of 25 and 8, respectively. Continued …

Q1 tourism target exceeded, but what about 45-day visa exemption?

Thailand has exceeded its target for tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2023, with a total of 6.15 million visitors from January to March 27. The government had initially aimed for 6 million arrivals during this period.

The numbers coincide with the government’s extension of the usual 30-day visa waiver (for 64 countries) to 45 days. The extension was valid between the start of October, 2022, and March 31, 2023. No announcements have since been made to extend the 45-day visa waiver beyond the end of March, although both the Thai Tourism and Sports Ministers and the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand have expressed their interest in proposing an extension. Nan Province: A melting pot

Late in the morning, my caffeine-dependent friends and I made a pit stop at the newly opened Pua Tobacco Barn Café & Eatery to refuel before leaving the popular town of Pua, close to the Xienghone-Hongsa special economic zone between Nan and Laos.

Sitting there and observing the surroundings reminded me of the good old days when Pua district served as one of the Tobacco Authority of Thailand’s primary suppliers in the northern region, with more than 1,000 rai of tobacco plants spanning the whole neighborhood. Continued …

Explore Amphawa Floating Market near Bangkok for an authentic Thai experience

Dense evergreen forests criss-crossed with a series of rivers and rivulets have always been a key feature of southeast Asia’s natural vegetation. Over the years, this unique vegetation has led to the development of an amazing water transport system, along with a unique water-based lifestyle, revolving around floating markets.

For centuries, the floating markets have played an integral role in shaping the lives of the citizens of Southeast Asian countries like Thailand. In recent years, the Thai lifestyle has changed and water transport has largely been replaced by road transport running along the network of highways stretching all across Thailand.

The floating markets have lost much of their significance. But Thailand authorities have come up with a unique plan of revamping the floating markets and turning them into tourist hot spots. Continued …
