Immigration closures in May

Immigration offices nationwide will be closed in May for upcoming Thai holidays. Immigration will be closed on:

  • Monday, May 6 (substitution day for Coronation Day that takes place on May 4)
  • Friday, May 10 (substitution day for Royal Ploughing Day that takes place on May 12)
  • Wednesday, May 22 (Visakha Bucha Day)

Hua Hin fire station to get a facelift

Hua Hin villa scam suspect arrested in Bangkok

Bangkok Metropolitan Police arrested a 20-year-old woman for allegedly creating fake accommodation booking pages to scam and defraud victims. Despite her denial of any wrongdoing, the Thai authorities affirm that the evidence against the woman, Kanyawee Prompichai, is substantial.

A victim reported to the police that in September 2023, after they had searched for accommodations in Khao Yai and Hua Hin on Facebook and came across the pages MYSkhaoyai and Wala Hua Hin Villa, each with about 24,000 followers. Continued …

Scorching 44°C wave to hit upper Thailand

Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a severe heat warning for upper Thailand, with temperatures expected to soar to a scorching 44 degrees Celsius in the northern, central, and northeastern regions.

Cardiovascular deaths exacerbated by high temperatures

A study recently published in the eBioMedicine journal shows that human-induced climate change could increase the mortality rate in patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), especially among vulnerable groups, based on a survey in China.

CVD is the cause of death of around 19 million people worldwide each year, 5 million of whom are in China. It is also why over 390 million of the global population is suffering from long-term health impacts. Continued …

Power consumption reaches new high on Monday night

Electricity consumption in Thailand peaked at a new high of 36,699.9 megawatts at 9pm on Monday night, according to Veerapat Kiatfuengfoo, spokesman for the Energy Ministry.

Thailand’s island of Koh Larn, just off Pattaya’s coast, is grappling with severe water scarcity due to an ongoing heat wave. Inhabitants and tourists alike are struggling with a shortage of clean, drinkable water, as the supply fails to meet burgeoning demand.

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

The hope is, in spite of El Nino, that the current dry season will give way to rainfall from the middle of May. The IEAT governor, Veeris Ammarapala, said there was no immediate crisis as the region’s 6,000 factories had additional water supplies from reservoir transfers, the purchase of raw water from companies and the facility of wastewater treatment to reuse the resource. Egg prices up as layer poultry swelter in heatwave

The Livestock Development Department has warned that eggs will become more expensive because hens and ducks are laying fewer eggs due to the heatwave.

The department said on Tuesday that the sweltering heat has prompted many poultry farms to report a significant drop in egg production and seek permission to raise prices. The department said cooperatives of layer hen farms asked twice to increase the price by 6 baht per tray of eggs, once on April 17 and again on April 29. Continued …

Study finds curcumin as effective as modern meds in treating stomach issues

Curcumin, an active component of turmeric and part of what gives the spice its yellow hue, is an effective treatment for indigestion, a double-blind trial led by Chulalongkorn University researchers shows.

BoT estimates first-quarter growth at just 1%

The Bank of Thailand estimates that the country’s economy grew by just 1% in the first quarter on both a quarterly and annualized basis.

Thailand records nearly 12 million tourists in first four months

Thailand recorded 11.95 million foreign tourist arrivals from the January to April 28 period, its tourism ministry said on Tuesday.

Foreign tourism generated revenue of 575 billion baht ($15.52 billion) in that period, he said. Thailand is targeting about 40 million foreign visitors this year and the sector is a key driver of its economy. – Reuters

Thai airports to expand for tourism boost

Thailand’s Airports of Thailand (AOT) is investing $4.8 billion in significant expansions at major airports Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. This move is to prepare for a predicted increase in tourism.

Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan province will experience vast growth with the addition of two runways and a terminal, plus extending the existing terminal. The rules are second nature to chef Weerawat “Num” Triyasenawat and second-generation forager Chimphan “Auntie Noi” Sripha, who regularly collect ingredients from the forests of Thailand’s northeastern Isan region. After dusting their haul with potato starch, which repels swarming ants, they calmly count their bounty and taste a couple of plump eggs, which burst in the mouth with the flavor of fresh milk.

Thai Residents Struggle Amid Dropping Water Reservoir Levels

Thailand is grappling with a significant drop in water levels in the Lam Takhong Reservoir and Lam Mun River, possibly leading to water shortages. With the reservoir containing just 35.4% of its capacity, water scarcity is becoming a stark reality due to drought and high heat.

Prolonged Drought Triggers Water Crisis in Buriram

The ongoing drought in Thailand’s Buriram province has resulted in a severe water shortage, forcing about 300 households across three villages in the Mueang district to buy water. The crisis is due to the drying up of groundwater sources, which the villages have traditionally relied on, as they don’t have access to local water pipelines.

The villages of old and new Ban Nong Makhuea, and Ban Nong Hua Ling, despite being near the Huai Jorakhe Mak reservoir, which serves the Mueang district, have no direct access to its water. EEC prepares for water shortages

A water shortage, caused by an El Niño-induced drought, in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) could be avoided as water supplies have been prepared for factories to help them get through the dry season this year, says the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

Doctor raises alarm over rising Covid-19 admissions and deaths

A lecturer in Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine has warned Thais to be more vigilant against Covid-19, saying infection rates appeared to be worsening, with higher hospital admissions, deaths and severe cases.

Warning over minimum wage increase

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that if the government raises the minimum daily wage to 400 baht nationwide, it may lead to GDP growing at a rate below 2.6% and increase the rate of inflation to 3%, affecting consumer purchasing power.

Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the UTCC, said a survey of 403 business operators across the country, carried out between April 22-26 and comprising manufacturing (36.9%), trade (33%), and the service sector (30.1%), found that an appropriate minimum daily wage would be 370 baht per day. Thailand was one of the top three countries in the Asia-Pacific region to suffer a significant surge in financial fraud scams last year, according to Google’s 2023 Bad Apps Report.

Public urged to be discreet in water use amid low levels at reservoirs

The Royal Irrigation Department has urged the public to conserve water and is encouraging farmers to primarily rely on rainwater for agricultural purposes to store water for future use.

Praphit Chanma, director-general of the department, said that large and medium-sized reservoirs across the country held a total of 39.201 billion cubic meters of water, or 51% of storage capacity. The dry seasons are becoming longer and drier, while the rainy seasons are shorter but with more intense rainfall. This oscillating pattern of droughts and floods has become harder to predict and is causing more serious impacts.

Solving the problem is no easy task. Water management in Thailand is complex and daunting because there are many factors involved, some of which conflict with one another — water shortage caused by growing water demand in various sectors, serious floods, rapid urbanization, land use change, as well as outdated urban water systems and irrigation infrastructure. Police have found a knife and blood stains in the Koh Phangan hotel room of a Spanish man who is a suspect in the murder and dismemberment of a Colombian anesthesiologist, whose body parts were found at a garbage dump on the island.

Over 9,000 villagers flee to Mae Hong Son amid armed clashes in Myanmar

Armed fighting continued in Myanmar’s eastern Karenni State on Friday, while more than 9,000 Myanmar villagers displaced by the recent clashes are taking shelter in the northern Thai province of Mae Hong Son across the border.

Jom is a man of few words. Our grasp of each other’s native language – my English, his Thai – is also minimal, meaning we don’t have a lot to say to each other. Then there are the betel nut leaves balled up inside his cheek. Since he’s continually chewing on them, communication between us is doubly hard.

A wild elephant has become a familiar sight among villagers as it makes yearly trips to their community during Buddhist lent. Footage shows the creature named Plai Krae plodding along a residential area in Nakhon Ratchasima province, with locals greeting it as it passed by on Aug. 2.

Cyclone Mocha to bring heavy rains to much of Thailand over the weekend

The north, central, eastern and southern regions of Thailand will experience isolated heavy to very heavy rains from Friday to Monday due to the influence of tropical cyclone “Mocha”, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said on Friday.

The cyclone, which was hovering over the central Bay of Bengal as of 4am Friday, was moving north at about 10 km/hr with sustained winds of about 105 km/hr. It is expected to make landfall over Myanmar on either Sunday or Monday. Continued …

‘Monster’ Asian heatwave and arrival of El Niño signal severe drought crisis

Thailand is susceptible to the effects of El Niño, which is forecast by the Department of Meteorology and weather experts to commence in June. The world, Thailand included, is expected to face an intense drought due to the occurrence of El Niño, leading to reduced rainfall during the rainy season, or possibly no rain at all.

El Niño is the warm phase of a cyclical climate pattern known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, when temperatures in the Pacific reach more than 0.5 degrees Celsius above normal. Continued …

Exploring the peace corps’ 60-year history in Thailand

The Peace Corps is a United States agency established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy to promote peace and friendship worldwide. Peace Corps volunteers have been working in Thailand since 1962, assisting Thai government agencies in various fields.

Currently, they operate in two main projects: teacher collaboration for development and youth development. Over 5,500 volunteers have worked with Thai communities for more than 60 years, but their work was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, Peace Corps volunteers returned to Thailand and underwent a 10-week training program before being dispatched to 29 provinces across the country. After four years of support from the ruling coalition government, Thailand is expected to vote against the decriminalization of marijuana in Sunday’s general election. The current free-for-all and weed shops lining the busy tourist streets appears unlikely to continue in the months after the election and a new parliament is settled.

Almost all of the political parties involved in the 2023 national election are in favor of returning to the previous policies of marijuana prohibition and confining its use to medicinal purposes only. Number of registered businesses at highest level in a decade

A total of 6,041 new businesses were registered in April, an increase of 12.37% over the same period last year, according to data released by the Department of Business Development under the Commerce Ministry.

Asia Biomass Plc (ABM), Thailand’s largest biomass fuel producer and trader by volume, expects revenue to grow by 20% this year to more than 3.6 billion baht thanks to its business expansion amid growing concerns over global warming.

Thailand, the world’s second-biggest rice exporter, is asking farmers to grow only one crop this year — instead of the usual two — as a likely El Nino looks set to reduce rainfall.

China’s CATL considers EV battery facilities to Thailand

The government of Thailand has started negotiations with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL), aiming to incentivize battery production to the country.

CATL is the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) battery supplier by market share. The deal would see the company open a first factory in Southeast Asia. The Chinese battery manufacturer has recently been making strides in its battery technology. These include a supposed 500Wh/kg battery announced as having the energy density to power a passenger aircraft. Pattaya gears up for 600,000 Indian tourists this Year

At least60 Indian tourists are anticipated to visit Pattaya this year, returning the visitor numbers to levels similar to those prior to the pandemic, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Anoma Vongyai, director of TAT’s Pattaya office, revealed that over 900,000 Indian tourists traveled to Thailand in the year preceding the pandemic, with approximately 600,000 of them visiting Pattaya. Thailand is celebrating Songkran this week with gaiety and color throughout the country, particularly in foreign visitors hotspots such as Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. The festivities coincide with positive signs that the country’s foreign tourism industry is recovering, with good news regarding the return of valuable long-haul visitors from key western markets also in the pipeline, according to a senior Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) official, despite higher airfares since 2020.

Thailand’s 2023 annual Songkran festivities are in full swing across the kingdom with Bangkok’s Silom Road again becoming the center of activity, with holidaymakers armed with water guns and buckets splashing each other, having fun and soaking up the carefree atmosphere. Continued …

This week’s Songkran festival is expected to generate 18.5 billion baht and attract over 300,000 foreign tourists, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Protecting yourself from the harmful effects of haze

Fine air pollution particles are continuing to have adverse effects on the health of people around the country, as the air they are breathing has reached dangerous levels of pollution.

On April 7, the levels of particulate matter 2.5 or PM 2.5 in Bangkok and surrounding provinces ranged from 33 to 57 micrograms per cubic meter of air, according to the Pollution Control Department, with 18 areas classified as orange, reflecting levels at which they start to affect health. Air pollution increases in upper northeastern regions of Thailand

According to the Pollution Control Department, 23 locations, primarily in the northern region of Thailand, have been found to contain high levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or smaller in diameter (PM2.5). The most severe levels were identified in Chiang Mai. These concentrations are considered detrimental to human health.

As of 11am yesterday, PM2.5 dust levels in the north ranged between 98 to 277 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. Continued …

Officials in Chiang Rai’s Mae Chan district are prepared to transfer patients from the district hospital to others in the northern province if a fire on Doi Jorakae Mountain becomes a health threat, officials at the provincial public health operations center said on Thursday.

The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) has warned people to prepare for a drought by saving water due to risks posed by the El Nino phenomenon since July, resulting in less rainfall than is commonly experienced at this time of year.

Measures sought to rein in airfares

The Airlines Association of Thailand (AAT) is urging the government to lower the fuel tax and operational fees at airports amid concerns over a potential increase in oil prices following the announcement by OPEC+ that the group would reduce its output, saying the lower cost burden would eventually help to reduce airfares.
