Hua Hin’s Daddy Deli acquires Taboo restaurant

Daddy Deli has acquired the Taboo Tapas Wine & Lounge Bar in Hua Hin’s Smorprong area and is preparing to reopen the venue as a new gastro pub, marking the brand’s fourth location in town and continuing its steady expansion since launching in 2020.

The new venue, to be called Taboo by Daddy Deli, will build on the success of the existing restaurant while introducing a more relaxed, community-focused dining concept. The gastro pub is expected to open in May. – HHT

Severe drought may grip Thailand for next 3 years

Thai people are being advised to brace for a prolonged and possibly extreme drought, which may last for up to three years due to El Niño weather phenomenon, according to the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) and Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency  (GISTDA).

Paitoon Kengkarnchang, deputy secretary-general of the ONWR, said that Thailand will start to feel the impacts of El Niño in July, with the hot weather intensifying from November into early next year. Continued … 

Volunteer firefighters paying the price

They die quietly, one by one, doing the forest officials’ job, rewarded with little more than praise that masks state hypocrisy. In early April, Boonma Phadaeng, 56, collapsed and died after days of fighting a forest fire in Mae Rim district, Chiang Mai province.

Days later, Decha Tathika lost his life under similar strain in Phrae. No insurance, hazard pay, or safety net for families left behind. They are not the only ones. Every year, poorly equipped volunteer firefighters die protecting their homes. Continued … 

Government urged to end military-led approach in deep south

Critics have warned that the military-led approach to handling the conflict in Thailand’s southern border provinces may be prolonging unrest rather than resolving it. Since violence resumed in 2004, the conflict in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat remains entrenched, rooted in historical, identity, and religious differences involving separatist groups.

According to Deep South Watch, a local think tank, more than 7,000 people have been killed in the decades-long unrest in the region, which is home to a majority of the country’s Malay Muslim population. Thailand has received no direct assistance from the United States as it struggles with the economic fallout of the American-Israeli war against Iran, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said in an interview Monday. The conflict has driven up fuel and fertilizer costs, placing significant strain on the Thai economy and its agricultural sector. In response, Thailand is turning to Russia and China for support.

Prices for urea fertilizer have nearly doubled, impacting more than 10 million Thai farmers, while diesel prices in Thailand reached historic highs. Number of Japanese restaurants in Thailand declines

Thailand Welcomes Over 11 million Tourists, Down 3% for Year

Thailand saw 11,364,781 foreign tourist arrivals from Jan. 1 to April 26, representing a 3.4% year-on-year decline, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Despite the decrease, the country generated an estimated B555,631 million in tourism-related spending. The top source markets for this period were China, Malaysia, Russia, India, and South Korea.

Travel agents slam B1,000 exit tax

The Thai Travel Agents Assn. (TTAA) strongly opposes the government’s plan to levy a 1,000-baht departure tax on Thai travelers, warning it will hamper two-way tourism and hurt the economy during a cost-of-living crisis.

Chotechuang Soorangura, vice-president of TTAA, said the goal to raise more revenue was understandable, but the principle behind the scheme was unacceptable. Thai Airways raises fuel surcharge on international tickets

LA Songkran Event Sets Guinness Record with Pad Thai Sales

More than 1,300 Pad Thai dishes were sold within an hour during the Songkran Festival on Sunday in Los Angeles, setting a new Guinness World Record. The “2026 Thai New Year: Songkran Festival,” hosted along a three-kilometer stretch of Hollywood Boulevard, attracted over 200,000 attendees and is regarded as the largest Thai festival outside of Thailand.

The festival commenced with a parade showcasing Thai cultural elements, drawing large crowds to Hollywood Boulevard. Participants included Thai youth in traditional attire and contestants from the Miss Thai Town 2026 pageant. The highlight of the day was the Pad Thai sales challenge, where chefs from 48 restaurants collaborated to surpass the 1,200 dish target. Bangkok’s heat crisis

Bangkok’s heat index has been sitting in the “danger” category since April 1, and as of today, that is nearly four weeks without a break. Actual air temperatures are running at 38 to 40 degrees celsius, with high humidity pushing the feels-like temperature significantly higher.

On the worst days earlier this month, the heat index hit 58.7 degrees celsius, at which point core body temperature can rise to 40 degrees within just 10 to 15 minutes of outdoor exposure. The reason April hits harder than any other month is structural: Thailand’s northeast monsoon ends around mid-February, the cooling rains of the southwest monsoon do not arrive until mid-May, and April sits right in the gap with no cloud cover, no rainfall, and heat building day after day with nowhere to go. Sri Lankan monks’ Thailand trip goes up in smoke after cannabis bust

Twenty-two Sri Lankan Buddhist monks who had just returned from Thailand were arrested on April 25 at an airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka, after customs officers allegedly found cannabis hidden in their luggage. Drug trafficking suspects arrested in Cha Am

Police have arrested two alleged leaders of a major drug trafficking network in Cha Am, seizing assets worth more than 183 million baht in what authorities describe as a significant development in an ongoing crackdown.

The operation follows a large-scale investigation into the “Tum Ngamnamjai” network, which began on Dec. 26 under the direction of Provincial Police Region 2. Teen held in Cha Am shooting

A Cha Am shooting involving a 17-year-old suspect has left a local air-conditioning technician injured, with police linking the incident to a dispute that began on Facebook.

The shooting took place at around 11:57 pm yesterday, outside a residence in Cha Am subdistrict. Police found Theppitak (surname withheld), 32, with a gunshot wound to his right arm. New study reveals coffee’s positive gut impacts, even without caffeine

New research is looking at the positive effects of coffee on the gut-brain connection. In the small study, published Tuesday in Nature Communications, researchers found regularly drinking coffee − both caffeinated and decaffeinated versions − can affect the gut microbiome, influencing mood and stress.

Researchers studied 31 coffee drinkers and 31 non-drinkers via psychological tests, caffeine and food diaries, as well as stool and urine samples to understand changes in their microbiome, mood, and stress levels. Continued … 

New summer storm lashes north and northeast with heavy rain and hail

Thailand is facing another burst of summer-storm weather, with the Thai Meteorological Department warning that the north and northeast will bear the brunt first, bringing thunderstorms, strong winds, hail and isolated heavy rain. Some areas may also see lightning as the latest system moves in.

The department said the fresh spell of volatile weather is being triggered by a high-pressure system, or cold air mass, from China extending across upper Vietnam before spreading over the northeast and the South China Sea. Thailand readies nationwide drought response as El Niño looms

The Smart Water Operation Center (SWOC) of the Royal Irrigation Department recently outlined Thailand’s water situation and outlook for 2026, saying the country is likely to enter an El Niño period in the middle of the year, which could bring below-normal rainfall.

Lufthansa Is Canceling Thousands Of Flights, Citing High Jet Fuel Prices

The flight cancellations would save about 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel, the price of which has doubled since the Iran war started, Lufthansa said. Lufthansa added that it expects a “largely stable fuel supply” for the flights still scheduled in its summer timetable.

Thai industrial sentiment drops in March due to Middle East war

Thailand’s industrial sentiment index dropped in March, weighed down ‌by higher oil prices and the conflict in the Middle East, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) reported yesterday. The federation said its industrial sentiment index slipped to 88.6 in ‌March from 90.0 in the previous month.

Cha Am officials visited a privately owned forest area in Sam Phraya subdistrict, Phetchaburi, yesterday to assist five children living with family members in a temporary shelter, after concerns were raised about their living conditions and welfare.

Kaew Khongwong, Cha Am district chief, led the visit, along with district officials, Phetchaburi social development staff, local administrators, public health workers, the kamnan and village heads, and Cha Am police. Thailand will enter its hot season on Sunday. Summer storms could start right away and temperatures in some northern provinces may reach a peak above 42 degrees Celsius, according to the Meteorological Department.

The National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command (NDPMC) has ordered all provinces to step up preparedness to prevent and address drought in 2026, stressing efficient water management — especially securing reserves for household consumption. First Thai-built light rail tram begins test runs in Khon Kaen

Thailand’s first domestically designed and built light rail tram has begun test runs at Rajamangala University of Technology Isan (RMUTI), Khon Kaen campus. The Thai economy could continue its growth trajectory and expand by 3% a year if the incoming Bhumjaithai-led coalition administration can complete its four-year term, say economists, though they warned any disruption in government formation might cause GDP growth to slide below 1.5% this year.

Yesterday, the Department of Tourism, through its Thailand Film Office, participated with an exhibition booth at the European Film Market 2026 (EFM 2026) in Berlin. The aim was to promote Thailand’s potential as an international filming destination, while pushing for continued foreign film production in Thailand to generate sustained income for the country.

During the event, the department reported a total of 10 production companies — from the United States, Scotland, the Czech Republic, the Hellenic Republic (Greece), the Republic of Poland, the Italian Republic, and the Republic of India — expressed interest in filming in Thailand in 2026–2027. Phuket airport bus denies forcing Thai students off for foreigners

A Phuket airport bus operator has denied abandoning Thai students to make room for foreigners after a video and complaints from parents circulated online. Parents shared a clip with several local news agencies showing students getting off an airport bus operated by Phuket Mahanakorn Co., which reportedly runs services between the Thalang area and Phuket International Airport.

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

The hope is, in spite of El Nino, that the current dry season will give way to rainfall from the middle of May. The IEAT governor, Veeris Ammarapala, said there was no immediate crisis as the region’s 6,000 factories had additional water supplies from reservoir transfers, the purchase of raw water from companies and the facility of wastewater treatment to reuse the resource. Thai Residents Struggle Amid Dropping Water Reservoir Levels

Thailand is grappling with a significant drop in water levels in the Lam Takhong Reservoir and Lam Mun River, possibly leading to water shortages. With the reservoir containing just 35.4% of its capacity, water scarcity is becoming a stark reality due to drought and high heat.

Lam Takhong Reservoir, a critical water source for five regional districts, now only holds 111.25 million cubic meters, which is a dramatic down tick from 204.63 million or 65% capacity last year, according to the provincial irrigation project. Continued …

Prolonged Drought Triggers Water Crisis in Buriram

The ongoing drought in Thailand’s Buriram province has resulted in a severe water shortage, forcing about 300 households across three villages in the Mueang district to buy water. The crisis is due to the drying up of groundwater sources, which the villages have traditionally relied on, as they don’t have access to local water pipelines.

The villages of old and new Ban Nong Makhuea, and Ban Nong Hua Ling, despite being near the Huai Jorakhe Mak reservoir, which serves the Mueang district, have no direct access to its water. EEC prepares for water shortages

A water shortage, caused by an El Niño-induced drought, in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) could be avoided as water supplies have been prepared for factories to help them get through the dry season this year, says the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

There are 41 industrial estates housing 6,000 factories in the EEC, which covers parts of Chon Buri, Rayong and Chachoengsao. Their demand for water stands at 1.5 million cubic meters a day. Continued …

Doctor raises alarm over rising Covid-19 admissions and deaths

A lecturer in Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine has warned Thais to be more vigilant against Covid-19, saying infection rates appeared to be worsening, with higher hospital admissions, deaths and severe cases.

Dr. Thira Woratanarat said figures from the past week from April 21 to 27 showed that 1,672 Covid patients were admitted to hospitals and nine died. He said 390 of the patients suffered from severe lung infections and 148 others had to be put on ventilators. Continued …

Warning over minimum wage increase

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that if the government raises the minimum daily wage to 400 baht nationwide, it may lead to GDP growing at a rate below 2.6% and increase the rate of inflation to 3%, affecting consumer purchasing power.

Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the UTCC, said a survey of 403 business operators across the country, carried out between April 22-26 and comprising manufacturing (36.9%), trade (33%), and the service sector (30.1%), found that an appropriate minimum daily wage would be 370 baht per day. Thailand was one of the top three countries in the Asia-Pacific region to suffer a significant surge in financial fraud scams last year, according to Google’s 2023 Bad Apps Report.

Public urged to be discreet in water use amid low levels at reservoirs

The Royal Irrigation Department has urged the public to conserve water and is encouraging farmers to primarily rely on rainwater for agricultural purposes to store water for future use.

Praphit Chanma, director-general of the department, said that large and medium-sized reservoirs across the country held a total of 39.201 billion cubic meters of water, or 51% of storage capacity. A wild elephant has become a familiar sight among villagers as it makes yearly trips to their community during Buddhist lent. Footage shows the creature named Plai Krae plodding along a residential area in Nakhon Ratchasima province, with locals greeting it as it passed by on Aug. 2.

Cyclone Mocha to bring heavy rains to much of Thailand over the weekend

The north, central, eastern and southern regions of Thailand will experience isolated heavy to very heavy rains from Friday to Monday due to the influence of tropical cyclone “Mocha”, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said on Friday.

The cyclone, which was hovering over the central Bay of Bengal as of 4am Friday, was moving north at about 10 km/hr with sustained winds of about 105 km/hr. It is expected to make landfall over Myanmar on either Sunday or Monday. Continued …

‘Monster’ Asian heatwave and arrival of El Niño signal severe drought crisis

Thailand is susceptible to the effects of El Niño, which is forecast by the Department of Meteorology and weather experts to commence in June. The world, Thailand included, is expected to face an intense drought due to the occurrence of El Niño, leading to reduced rainfall during the rainy season, or possibly no rain at all.

El Niño is the warm phase of a cyclical climate pattern known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, when temperatures in the Pacific reach more than 0.5 degrees Celsius above normal. Continued …

Exploring the peace corps’ 60-year history in Thailand

The Peace Corps is a United States agency established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy to promote peace and friendship worldwide. Peace Corps volunteers have been working in Thailand since 1962, assisting Thai government agencies in various fields.

Currently, they operate in two main projects: teacher collaboration for development and youth development. Over 5,500 volunteers have worked with Thai communities for more than 60 years, but their work was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, Peace Corps volunteers returned to Thailand and underwent a 10-week training program before being dispatched to 29 provinces across the country. After four years of support from the ruling coalition government, Thailand is expected to vote against the decriminalization of marijuana in Sunday’s general election. Number of registered businesses at highest level in a decade

A total of 6,041 new businesses were registered in April, an increase of 12.37% over the same period last year, according to data released by the Department of Business Development under the Commerce Ministry.

Asia Biomass Plc (ABM), Thailand’s largest biomass fuel producer and trader by volume, expects revenue to grow by 20% this year to more than 3.6 billion baht thanks to its business expansion amid growing concerns over global warming.

El Nino May Slash Thai Rice Crop and Spur Inflation Across Asia

Thailand, the world’s second-biggest rice exporter, is asking farmers to grow only one crop this year — instead of the usual two — as a likely El Nino looks set to reduce rainfall.

Rice is highly water-intensive and is dependent on irrigation and enough precipitation. It’s an early sign of how the disruptive weather pattern is threatening global food production.
