Prime Minister visits Hua Hin Railway Station

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, accompanied by key government officials, visited the new Hua Hin Railway Station yesterday, during the start of the Songkran festival holidays.

The prime minister, also serving as the minister of finance, was joined by Suriya Juengrungruangkit, minister of transport, and Puangpet Chunla-ied, a minister in the prime minister’s office. The delegation was received by the governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan, the Hua Hin district chief, the mayor of Hua Hin City, and other leaders from both public and private sectors. Continued …

PM orders Chat Chai street food for 100 people

During his visit to Hua Hin yesterday, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, after previously touring Hua Hin’s new railroad station, made his way to the Chat Chai market, where he ordered grilled pork skewers from Anan Thongbutdee, the 67-year-old owner.

He ordered a substantial amount including grilled pork skewers, grilled meatballs, and sticky rice sufficient to feed about a hundred people, all to be delivered to his condo the next evening. Anan, who the PM has ordered food from many times in the past, will personally prepare 500 pork skewers, 200 meatball skewers, and 100 packets of sticky rice for the occasion. – HHT

Hot Songkran weekend ahead

Scorching heat is expected over the Songkran Thai New Year holiday that wraps up on Monday. Surajit Jit-areerat from the Meteorological Department on Friday said hot weather conditions would continue over the weekend after many parts of the country recently experienced summer storms.

The department is expecting temperatures in some locations — including the capital — could rise up to 41 degrees Celsius in the coming days and warned people to avoid staying outdoors for too long. Continued …

25 killed, 248 injured in road accidents on first day of Songkran travel

Twenty-five people were killed and 248 others injured in 234 road accidents across the country on Thursday, Chaiwat Chuntirapong, director-general of the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, told a press conference today.

Forty-four percent of the accidents were caused by speeding, 20.9% by cutting in and 16.7% by drunk driving; 86% of the accidents involved motorcycles and 85.9% took place on straight roads, 47% on main roads and 23.5% on secondary roads. A stream of people, some fearing air strikes, queued at a border crossing to flee Myanmar on Friday, a day after the strategically vital town of Myawaddy near Thailand fell to anti-junta resistance that is gaining strength.

More welfare urged for domesticated elephants

The welfare of domesticated elephants is crucial if a negative impact on tourism is to be prevented, experts said in a recent interview. Unlike wild elephants, domesticated elephants have helped build Thailand’s economy by hauling logs since the Rattanakosin era.

The turning point in that role came when more than 50,000 logs swept by floods and landslides hit a community in Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Phipun district in 1988, killing 90 residents and injuring more than 200 others. Bus accident in PKK’s Thap Sakae leaves 14 dead, 35 injured

At least 14 people were killed and 35 others injured when a tour bus left the road and crashed into a tree in Thap Sakae, Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Thailand’s weekly Covid-19 cases surge over 500, with three fatalities

The Department of Disease Control in Thailand (DDC) reported a sudden surge in weekly Covid-19 cases, with over 500 new patients and three fatalities. The DDC revealed 88 cases of pneumonia among Covid patients. The report, which covers the period from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, confirms an average of 76 hospital admissions and one death per day.

Since the start of the year, the total number of Covid cases has reached 36,204, with 826 cumulative deaths. Among these, 88 patients have been diagnosed with pneumonia and 40 required respiratory support. Continued …

Shopping refund gets nod

The cabinet on Monday approved a tax refund scheme for shopping to stimulate domestic spending early next year and promote wider use of electronic invoices, according to the Finance Ministry.

Pornchai Thiraveja, the ministry’s spokesman and chief of the Fiscal Policy Office, said under the “Easy E-Receipt” program, individuals can receive a tax deduction of up to 50,000 baht for purchases of goods and services from business operators backed by the e-tax system between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15 next year. Farmers in Thailand look indoors to plant strawberries, veggies and cannabis

In the past year, pedestrians in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Road have been drawn to a pinkish hue from a large window on the busy street. Many of them peer through the window and are surprised to see dozens of layers of strawberry plants stacked high behind the glass.

Deputy National Police Chief Gen. Surachate Hakparn, also known by the public as “Big Joke”, is to take over the investigation into an underage sex scandal in Pattaya exposed in a German TV documentary aired in recent days, which targeted Pattaya as a haven for sex tourists and those seeking under age sex services.

Groups urge government to scrap 4am opening

Temperance groups and road safety advocates are urging the government to rethink its plan to allow bars, clubs and other entertainment venues to operate until 4am, saying authorities have not taken the necessary precautions to prevent alcohol-related accidents.

The calls come about a week after the Interior Ministry issued an announcement allowing bars and clubs in Bangkok and Phuket, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui on Surat Thani, to open until 4am starting from Dec. 15. Continued …

5.1-billion-baht soft power budget to be reduced

The government will revise the 5.1-billion-baht budget that was earmarked for national arts and culture promotion projects by the National Soft Power Development Committee (NSPDC) as it is considered too much, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Monday.

Delay to 2024 confirmed for Hua Hin railway and new station construction

The double track rail line between Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan is set to be open by next year, a spokesperson for the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has said.

Most of upper Thailand will be hit with summer storms this weekend, while the rest of the country will experience hot to very hot temperatures, the Thai Meteorological Department warned.

In an announcement this morning, the department said a moderate high-pressure system moving from upper Vietnam to the northeast and the South China Sea will bring storms, gusty winds, hail and thunder to several provinces on Saturday and Sunday. Continued …

The Fiscal Policy Office projects that social-welfare expenditures will reach 1 trillion baht in 2033, due mainly to the rising cost of caring for the elderly as Thailand’s population continues to age.

Chiang Mai swings back to life after three-year break from Songkran celebrations

As many as 90,000 travelers are set to visit Chiang Mai this week to join the Songkran festival celebration, with hotel bookings expected to reach 65%, the director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Chiang Mai office, Suladda Sarutilavan, said.

Over 100 lives lost, 1,000 injured in road accidents

According to the director general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Boontham Lertsukheekasem, 114 fatalities and 1,064 injuries were recorded due to road accidents nationwide during the Songkran holiday. Between Tuesday and Thursday, there were 1,055 traffic incidents leading to these casualties a report today revealed.

Chiang Mai, a province in the north, experienced the most accidents with 38 reported incidents. Bangkok saw the highest fatality rate with nine deaths. Chiang Mai, along with the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, had the highest count of injured individuals, with 40 each, according to Boontham. Continued …

Pathum Thani Songkran festival: Nearly 20 knives and weapons seized by officials

Pathum Thani’s Klong Luang district held a two-day Songkran festival, but it wasn’t all fun and games. In an effort to promote safety and prevent violence, officials set up checkpoints around Khlong Sam Road to check for weapons and drunk drivers.

The joint effort included representatives from Khlong Luang District Administration, Klong Luang District Police, Klong Sam Municipality, and Khlong Luang District Public Health Excise officials. Continued …

Two hot-headed vocational groups were arrested by the police on Khao San Road during the Songkran Festival in Bangkok.

Sisaket Police Seize Over 200 Cars, Arrest 346 Drunk Drivers During Songkran

According to statistics released by the Sisaket Provincial Police, during the Songkran Festival a total of 1,470 people were arrested, 346 of whom were arrested for drunk driving.

Hua Hin-Pattaya bus service twice a day

Hua Hin now has twice-daily bus service to Pattaya, starting Feb. 19. The bus leaves Hua Hin at 9am and 3pm, and departs from Pattaya at 8am and 4pm. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets
