Thai hotel closures rise 42% as 2027 outlook darkens

Thailand’s hotel and accommodation sector recorded 148 business closures in the first nine months of 2026, a 42% increase on the same period last year, according to the Kasikorn Research Center.

The increase follows a difficult 2025, when about 51% of operators reported losses. Smaller businesses were hardest hit: 54% experienced losses, while 42% had accumulated losses for three consecutive years from 2023 to 2025. Hua Hin-Cha-am among six new MICE Cities

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau ((TCEB), has certified six new destinations across the country as official “MICE Cities”, a network that is now expanded to 16 destinations. It is a network that gives event organizers and international clients a wide choice of destinations, while enabling more cities across Thailand to leverage MICE as a driver of local economic development.

The latest 2026 MICE City assessment resulted in two key outcomes. Three existing MICE Cities – Surat Thani, Phitsanulok and Udon Thani – successfully renewed their MICE City certification, while six new destinations – Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani, Rayong, Hua Hin–Cha-am, Krabi and Nakhon Si Thammarat – were newly certified as MICE Cities. Oil prices settled about 3% higher yesterday, as a Houthi missile attack on Saudi Arabia revived fears of supply disruptions. Reports of US-Iran talks on reopening the Strait of Hormuz subsequently tempered the gains.

Brent crude futures closed at US$106.60 a barrel, gaining US$3.52, or 3.4%, to reach their highest settlement since Sept. 15. Thailand’s six hospitals are expected to post an 11% year-on-year (YoY) increase in aggregate net profit to $243.9 million (8.16 billion baht) in the third quarter (Q3), according to CGS International. CGS International attributed the growth to the recovery of foreign patient traffic and rising demand during influenza and COVID-19 outbreaks.

Why has Thailand delayed its nuclear power plans?

Additionally, the country faces significant challenges in developing the necessary infrastructure, technical expertise, and regulatory frameworks required to manage nuclear technology safely.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is currently exploring a new roadmap that focuses on the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) rather than large-scale plants. These SMRs are intended to offer more flexibility for industrial users and potentially reduce construction time and costs compared to conventional reactors. However, the government is also prioritizing immediate energy security and cost stabilization through other means, such as restarting coal-fired units and promoting rooftop solar to mitigate the impact of volatile global energy prices.

Nepal PM says floods ‘a warning to the world’ about climate change

Indian Stepfather Arrested for Killing of 8-Year-Old Boy in Cha-am

Police in Cha-am have arrested an Indian man suspected of brutally killing his eight-year-old stepson at their home in Hua Sai Tai community. The man, identified as Kanthoran Singh, aged 33, was taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting the boy, who was found dead with multiple injuries. The suspect has denied all charges.

The child’s body was discovered on Sunday inside the house he shared with Singh. Police responding to the scene found the boy lying motionless with foam around his mouth, bruising on his body and bloodstains on the bed. His body was sent to Phra Chom Klao Hospitalfor a detailed autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Continued …

19 Rai public park to get a makeover

Hua Hin City Municipality has announced plans to upgrade the 19 Rai public park at Suan Luang Queen’s Park. The park, widely used by residents for walking, exercise, and leisure, is considered an important green space in the city.

According to the municipality, the project will prioritize maintaining existing trees to preserve shade throughout the park. Additional trees will also be planted to expand green coverage. Thailand is witnessing a concerning rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), according to the latest National Health Examination Survey (NHES). Thailand yesterday approved four data center projects worth $3.1 billion in investment, as well as new measures to kickstart projects that have already been approved, the Board of Investment said.

While the Thai baht has fluctuated over the past decade, foreign tourists say the currency swings rarely impact their vacations. One long-time visitor recalls arriving in Thailand in 2015 when the exchange rate was about 30 baht to the USD. Today, it hovers around 32. Over the years, it has peaked at 38 and dropped as low as 29.

“I find it hard to believe that baht fluctuations significantly impact tourism,” the visitor said. “You’d have to be a broke backpacker staying in a hostel to worry about a few percentage points when planning a vacation, especially considering airfare from Europe or the States. Hua Hin sees tourism boost during long weekend with hotel occupancy at 80%

Hotels in Hua Hin and other parts of Prachuap Khiri Khan reported strong occupancy levels during the recent four-day weekend, with average rates reaching 80%, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Data collected during the Asalha Bucha and Buddhist Lent holidays, from July 10–13, showed a steady flow of domestic visitors to the province. Most tourists stayed in Hua Hin, Pranburi and nearby areas, where hotel occupancy ranged from 80% to 90%. Continued …

A study conducted under the ASIA-AQ project has found that most of the PM2.5 pollution affecting northern Thailand is due to biomass burning. The Asian Development Bank has upgraded Thailand’s GDP forecast for this year and kept the forecast for next year unchanged. The bank also said developing Asia is likely to grow more slowly than previously thought this year and next, and the outlook could worsen if President-elect Donald Trump makes swift changes to U.S. trade policy.

Developing Asia, which includes 46 Asia-Pacific countries stretching from Georgia to Samoa – and excludes Japan, Australia and New Zealand – is projected to grow 4.9% this year and 4.8% next year, slightly lower than the ADB’s forecasts of 5.0% and 4.9% in September. Continued …

Saturday October 23: Chulalongkorn Memorial Day. Crowds leave pink roses and incense at the equestrian statue of Rama V on the Royal Plaza in Dusit.

November

Loy Krathong will take place on Sunday, November 14, A festival of lights to thank the Goddess of Water (Phra Mae Khongkha) and let go of bad luck. People float small decorated baskets (krathongs) made of leaves, candles, and flowers on rivers, lakes, and seas.

December

Sunday December 5: King Bhumibol’s Birthday Anniversary, also National Day and National Father’s Day.
Monday December 6: The holiday carries over, giving you three days off.
Friday December 10: Constitution Day, marking Thailand’s first permanent constitution in 1932. Handy timing for a weekend in Khao Yai.
