Agencies join forces to digitize government

The Thai Chamber of Commerce is working with the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission (OPDC) and the Business Development Department to link corporate information electronically, facilitating paperless procedures and generating cost savings for residents and entrepreneurs of up to 7 billion baht per year.

Sanan Angubolkul, chairman of the chamber, said in the past business operators had to sign and submit many copies of documents. The government is working to develop an electronic system linking corporate information. Continued …

Eight police officers in Nakhon Pathom have been suspended from the force following accusations of attempting to extort 200,000 baht from the owner of a chicken processing factory. The factory owner, who documented her ordeal on the Sai Mai Must Survive Facebook page and with local police, recounted a troubling encounter with the law enforcers. Digital wallet scheme approved in principle by Cabinet

A Cabinet meeting on Tuesday approved in principle the government’s proposed digital wallet scheme to stimulate the economy, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin announced in a press event after the meeting ended. #digitalwallet

Under the scheme, all Thais above the age of 16 years with a monthly income of less than 70,000 baht and bank deposits lower than 500,000 baht will receive 10,000 baht via a digital wallet to spend at local businesses. Continued …

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has announced that Thailand is offering a visa-free scheme to Russian visitors for three months from May 1 to July 31.

Srettha held a press conference at Government House following a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day. In a part of his speech, the PM mentioned that the Cabinet agreed to offer visa-free travel to government officials from Bangladesh, while also approving visa-free travel for Russian nationals. Songkran generated 140 billion baht over 21 days

Sudawan Wangsupakitkosol, minister of tourism and sports, reported that the Economics Tourism and Sports Division has summarized the latest information on Thai and foreign tourists during the Songkran Festival 2024, from April 1-21.

The festival generated a total income of 140.335 billion baht, which is higher than the ministry’s previous estimate that during these 21 days the total income would be around 132 billion baht. Continued …

Thailand Enters Low Tourism Season

Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, the president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), revealed that Thailand is officially entering the low season, saying Thai tourism operators may struggle with low incoming tourists after the Songkran holidays.

Arrivals set to soar amid holidays in East Asia

Chinese and Japanese tourists are expected to flock to Thailand during the Labor Day holiday and Japan’s Golden Week, driving arrivals to 996,000, up 29% from the corresponding period last year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

During the holiday period that runs from April 26 to May 5, Thailand is projected to welcome 89,000 foreign arrivals per day – 10% higher than the average – mainly attributed to public holidays in several countries, said Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, deputy governor for international marketing in Asia and South Pacific at TAT.
