Southeast Asian countries are highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, yet they continue to rely heavily on coal for economic development. Compared to other parts of the world, the region is still to fully embrace the potential of low-cost renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power. Despite commitments to phase out coal, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines still plan to build 45GW of new coal capacity, lacking detailed roadmaps for coal phase-out and ambition to phase in renewables. Thailand Unveils Ambitious ‘Zero Dropout’ Program

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed deep concern over the alarming statistics showing that around one million Thai youths aged 3-18 have dropped out of school. This concern prompted the launch of the “Thailand Zero Dropout” program, a top-priority national agenda aimed at reversing this troubling trend.

(Editor: A sure way to decrease the drop-out rate would be to eliminate the requirement for school uniforms. Many families go into debt each year paying for school uniforms, while others must forego allowing their children to attend school due to the cost of uniforms.)

Government spokesman Chai Wacharonke announced the adoption of four crucial measures at yesterday’s cabinet meeting, which are to be rolled out across all provinces without delay. The first step involves locating these dropouts. Following that, tailored support will be provided to address the specific needs of each child, ensuring they return to school. Continued …

The Surprising History of Pad Thai

Pichaya “Pam” Soontornyanakij — better known as Chef Pam, the Michelin-starred chef at the helm of Bangkok’s Potong restaurant — is descended from a family that moved to Thailand from southern China in the 1880s, five generations ago. Although her roots can be traced back to Fujian Province, Soontornyanakij grew up in a family that had long since assimilated into Thai culture — or so she thought.

“Growing up, my mom cooked pad Thai regularly — maybe once a month,” says Pam. “I thought it was Thai.” It wasn’t until she started studying food and went to culinary school that she realized most of the food she had eaten in her family home was, in fact, Thai-Chinese. Continued …

The biggest killer you never considered

Some of the world’s big challenges get a lot of attention. Climate change, war and immigration are constantly in the news and receive large funding from states and private philanthropies. Other significant problems like tuberculosis and nutrition receive less airtime and awareness but count among major global priorities, with funding allocated.

Even the aptly named “neglected tropical diseases” like rabies, river blindness and leprosy, which kill 200,000 people each year in poorer countries, have their own programs and attention in the World Health Organization. Continued …

Analysts see continued baht decline this year

The baht is likely to plunge to 37.25 to the U.S. dollar in the short term, as Asian currencies slumped to their weakest level since 2022 amid continued outflows from both the Thai stock and bond markets, attributed to ongoing global volatility pending U.S. interest rate cuts, say economists.

The Thai currency fell to 36.99 baht to the greenback on Thursday, the lowest in two months, from Wednesday’s close of 36.82. The yen slid past the key 160-per-dollar level to a 38-year low, while currencies in the region were largely subdued as the dollar strengthened overnight amid prospects that U.S. interest rates may stay higher for longer. The story came to an abrupt halt when the American son of the serviceman attacked the media. At the same time, the granddaughter of an elderly Thai woman confirmed that both love stories emerging at the same time were not an act of serendipity. Continued …

Thai Banks Are the Top Suppliers of Financial Services to Myanmar’s Military: UN Expert

Thai banks have become the main supplier of international financial services for Myanmar’s military government, enabling its purchases of goods and equipment used to carry out its increasingly bloody war against pro-democracy resistance forces and armed ethnic minority groups, a UN expert said in a report issued Wednesday.

The report by Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, tracks how that country’s ruling military council has been able to continue procuring arms by shifting suppliers of financial services and military hardware as previous sources have been blocked by sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and other states. Could expanding foreigners’ property rights stimulate Thai economy?

Thailand’s prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, has proposed a policy allowing foreigners to lease land for up to 99 years and to own up to 75% of a condominium project as an economic stimulus measure. He has clarified that this policy would not equate to granting land ownership rights to foreigners.

However, critics contend that such a move could lead to increased land prices, potentially hindering Thai citizens from owning land. Continued …

Global foreign investment is falling

How does today’s climate of international chaos and uncertainty serve as a business barometer for foreign investment? Foreign investment has declined globally by 2% to $1.3 trillion (44 trillion baht) for 2023. Yet, in developing countries, the dip was much deeper as investment flows fell by 7% to $867 billion.

These numbers from the UN’s latest World Investment Report 2024 underscore both a cautious recovery from the pandemic and, even more so, the results of international political discord, civil conflict, and investor nervousness. Continued …

A common ASEAN visa may be too ambitious to realise

In April, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin proposed a Schengen-like visa program with some of his ASEAN counterparts. Srettha’s plan envisages a single or common visa area for the mainland ASEAN states of Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. If the plan follows the EU model, short-stay visitors would, with a single application, have access to the six countries for up to 90 days.

The initiative seeks to boost tourist numbers beyond their pre-COVID levels. In 2023, tourist arrivals to ASEAN countries sat at roughly 70% of their pre-COVID level, with Thailand leading at just north of 28 million, still far shy of its 2019 peak of nearly 40 million. Continued …

Volcanic durian from southern Thailand creates year-long wait list

A surge in demand has led to a year-long wait list for the unique volcanic durian grown exclusively in southern Thailand, which boasts a GAP certification ensuring its safety and quality. This particular variety is reported to be twice as delicious as the commonly known Monthong durian.

At the heart of this phenomenon is Saiyut Jannsawang’s orchard in Na Khao Sia village, Trang province. There’s a reason why Khao Lak is known as ‘Little Thailand’

The smell of coffee fills the warm, humid tropical air. Before a cave in the rainforest, some men have heated water in a bamboo tube over an open fire and then prepared a jet-black brew. This isn’t only for the tourists, but a tradition in southern Thailand. The drink is served, likewise, from cups made of bamboo.

Sipping their coffee, the visitors look out on the Sok River, where the rafts on which they came are bobbing peacefully. Cherry-red dragonflies buzz above the water, an army of ants marches across the sandy soil, and high up in the tree is the sound of exotic birds singing away. Continued …

Bank of Thailand Forecasts Modest Growth for Remainder of 2024

The Bank of Thailand anticipates slower economic growth in the upcoming third and fourth quarters, attributing this to a high base effect. These projections were shared during a monetary policy forum held yesterday.

The central bank now estimates the growth rate for the third and fourth quarters to be between 0.6% and 0.7% per quarter due to the high base effect. Kaiyo Window Films

Kaiyo Window Films is a previous sponsor of Hua Hin Expat News but had to discontinue its position here during the Covid-19 pandemic. They are back now to offer local businesses and home-owning expat readers the best in solar and ultraviolet protection for their homes.

If your building uses air conditioning, you may not feel you have a need to control solar heat gain. However, the fact is fuel costs are spiraling and the excessive use of AC systems plays a significant part in climate change. It has become environmentally damaging and financially costly to allow the sun’s heat to enter a building, only then to be artificially cooled.

KAIYO Window Films Co., Ltd., has 9 years experience in Thailand, and more than 27 years experience in all aspects of solar control and privacy window film application in the UK and Europe, offers the same high standard and invaluable knowledge gained by our experience using the best U.S and Korean-made films with a 5- to 10-year guarantee, and latest high-tech measuring equipment here in Thailand. All our installers are trained by Kaiyo experts or are approved installers from the manufacturers.

We can supply both Nano and Carbon Ceramic films, and films suitable for double glazing. We only use specialized architectural window films on residential and commercial buildings!

We have established direct working relationship with Pure8 Developments, who built the luxury Ban Ing Phu Development and Ban Rom Yen at Springfield Royal Country Club. We now also work closely together with Beautiful World Furniture and White Beach Villas, plus having worked directly with customers in most developments in Hua Hin, having great feedback and recommendations with a 5* Google Rating.

Kaiyo also has completed large projects at Amanpuri 5* residential properties in Phuket, the CAE Flight training center for Air Asia in Bangkok, as well as, locally, Nana Dental Clinic, Bangkok Hospital and Kuiburiwittaya School in Kuiburi.

Installing solar-control window films in your office, hotel or business premises is a cost-effective way to reduce your energy usage for cooling, therefore generating more profits and keeping in line with legislation for business energy usage.

Re: New tax on foreigner income

It is upsetting the Thai tax authorities want to double tax expatriate retirees, etc. As most of us live on a fixed income, it is already difficult to pay for food, rent, utilities, etc.

Many of us pay heavily to support a Thai family and outside relatives with consistent monetary support. Now we are to be burdened with additional taxation? In many countries where we originated from, we are already taxed heavily and every dollar counts.

This new idea of double taxing expatriates will have unintended consequences for Thai revenue aspirations. Many retired people will not be able to pay more tax than they already are already paying in their home countries. Or, even if they are able, they will deeply resent being double taxed. This idea of double taxation will have unintended consequences for the Thai economy.

“Many of us who have bought homes and condos will sadly be leaving Thailand. Some of us who support entire Thai families will reluctantly be doing the same. Those who are renting homes or apartments can leave more easily. The Thai economy will be impacted by the exodus of retired expats. This is an ill conceived idea but I am sure this Thai double tax will continue to be enacted by the Thai tax enforcers.

“Many foreigners who have lived in Thailand for years or even decades will soon leave Thailand, and not look back. It feels like the Thai government, by double taxing us, does not want foreigner retirees to live in Thailand. If that is their goal then they will surely succeed.” – Left Already

(Editor note: Scores of countries already have tax agreements with Thailand that will protect expats living in Thailand from the planned tax. The author apparently hails from a country that does not have such a tax treaty with Thailand. Expats from those countries will definitely feel the effects.)
