When did the first smartphone appear? The first mobile phone prototype came from Motorola in 1973. The first one approved, affectionately called The Brick, came out in 1983. In 1992 an IBM engineer created the Sweetspot but it didn’t hit the market until 1994, as the IBM Simon Personal Communicator.

Thailand’s Cabinet has approved the collection of a 15% global minimum corporate tax on large multinational companies under an agreement led by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), aiming to prevent profit shifting to tax havens and generate about 10 billion baht in additional state revenue each year.

Thailand is stepping up efforts to rebuild international air capacity and reduce its reliance on Middle East aviation hubs after the regional conflict disrupted long-haul travel flows and forced the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to lower its foreign tourist target from distant markets this year.

TAT Gov. Thapanee Kiatphaibool said the agency aims to restore Thailand’s passenger seat capacity to more than 100% of the 2019 level by 2027, using air connectivity as a core measure of tourism recovery. U-Tapao airport construction set to start April 3 after long delay

The long-delayed U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Aviation City project is set to move into construction on April 3, when the Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) is scheduled to issue a notice to proceed (NTP) to U-Tapao International Aviation Co. (UTA), formally triggering the start of the 50-year concession.

Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, president of Bangkok Airways, said the project had been delayed for more than five and a half years, but has now reached the point where work can finally begin. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) forecast today that a heat low-pressure system is covering upper Thailand, bringing hot conditions nationwide and very hot weather in some areas of the north, northeast and central regions.

Economists are warning that persistently high oil prices linked to prolonged tensions in the Middle East could accelerate inflation and slow growth, pushing Thailand — and parts of the global economy — toward stagflation, a combination of weakening expansion and rising prices.

Yunyong Thaicharoen, chief economist and sustainability officer at Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), said the conflict appears likely to drag on, keeping oil prices elevated and driving inflation higher. Truckers to raise haulage charges by 10% from April 1

The Federation of Land Transport of Thailand has resolved to roll out phased increases in its charges of up to 30%, starting on April 1, to offset rising operating costs driven by a 6 baht-per-liter increase in diesel prices.

Thanadet Traiyot waited in line for hours at his local gas station, armed with containers and desperately hoping to secure much-needed diesel for his rice fields in Ayutthaya, central Thailand. Over 350 ships reportedly await Iran’s clearance to transit Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Fars News Agency reported on Thursday that more than 350 vessels are waiting for Iran’s authorization to transit the Strait of Hormuz, and that the strategic shipping route remains closed to vessels belonging to, or linked with, the United States, Israel, and their allies.

The report said the waiting vessels include 25 very large crude carriers (VLCCs), 200 conventional oil tankers, and 70 LNG and CNG carriers. All vessels have been ordered to shut down their engines and remain stationary, and cannot dock at regional ports because multiple sea routes are under the full control of Iran’s armed forces. Bangkok Airways to raise domestic airfares by up to 20%

Bangkok Airways plans to increase domestic airfares by 15%-20% from April 1 to counter rising fuel costs and a 3% decline in second-quarter forward bookings, and may negotiate with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) to extend the airfare ceiling if operating costs continue to soar.

Tour Group Scammed at Suvarnabhumi Over Canceled China Trip

A group of mostly elderly travelers, later identified as lay judges, filed a complaint on Thursday with The Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) after allegedly being abandoned at Suvarnabhumi Airport by a tour company.

The group had been due to depart for Guizhou, China, but found no company representatives present and were unable to make contact. Total damages are estimated at 1,944,000 baht. Hua Hin celebrated Loy Krathong last night, with residents gathering at several locations across the city to take part in one of Thailand’s most recognizable annual cultural traditions. This year’s Loy Krathong celebrations in Hua Hin were scaled back following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, but the events continued in a respectful and reflective manner.

At Khao Tao Reservoir, families and groups of friends released krathongs made from natural materials such as banana leaves and bread into the water as part of the long-standing tradition of paying respect to the Goddess of Water and symbolically letting go of misfortune. Similar scenes took place near the Hua Hin fishing pier, as well as at Queen’s Park (Suan Luang Rajini 19 Rai), Khao Noi, Hua Don, Nong Kae and Saphan Khee Lek. Continued …

Bribery probe deepens police credibility crisis

The reputation of the Royal Thai Police (RTP) has suffered a significant blow following a decision by the Police Complaints Review Committee (PCRC) to formally accuse former National Police Chief Torsak Sukvimol and more than 200 police officers of disciplinary misconduct for allegedly accepting bribes from online gambling networks.

Thailand to Tax All Online Shopping Imports Starting 2026

In a significant policy shift, Thailand’s Customs Department announced today that starting Jan. 1, 2026, all foreign goods sold online will face an import duty if valued at more than 1 baht. This move will end the current exemption for items priced below 1,500 baht, which will expire at the end of this year.

The introduction of this duty, alongside the existing value-added tax (VAT), is predicted to generate at least 3 billion Thai baht annually for the government. The policy change arises from the observation that foreign goods imported through various platforms and priced below 1,500 baht total over 30 billion baht per year. Thai exports on course for double-digit growth this year

The improving global economy is expected to boost Thai exports by 9.5%-10% this year, higher than previously estimated, but Thailand will not gain significantly from the growth, says the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB). The headline consumer price index (CPI) decreased by 0.76% year-on-year to 100 in October, marking the seventh straight month of decline, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

EV and PPV boost car production in September, while pickup truck sales decline

Automotive Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) reported that in September car production grew by 14% compared to the previous month, driven largely by the increase in electric vehicles (EVs) and pickup passenger vehicles (PPVs). However, pickup truck production declined, impacted by the challenging economic conditions and stricter lending policies.

A total of 128,104 cars were produced in September 2025, reflecting a 14% increase from August and a 4.8% increase from September 2024. This growth is mainly attributed to the increased production of electric passenger vehicles (EVs), which compensate for the reduced imports of EVs into the country in 2023-2024. Thailand’snational parks have collected approximately 2.2 billion baht in entrance and accommodation fees from tourists in fiscal year 2025, announced the chief of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) yesterday.

MRTA vows to restore traffic to collapsed road area within 14 days

Gardphajon Udomdhammabhakdi, governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), yesterday addressed the road subsidence in front of Vajira Hospital on Samsen Road, Dusit District, Bangkok, which occurred on Wednesday. The subsidence is linked to the ongoing construction of the Purple Line metro in the Tao Poon-Rat Burana section (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road).

The initial investigation suggested that the issue was caused by the soil conditions combined with water trapped in the soil. Wild Elephant Kills Villager in Prachinburi

A 79-year-old villager was killed by a wild elephant in Prachinburi during the early hours yesterday. The victim was attacked outside his home in Wang Ai Pong village, Na Di District, after encountering an elephant known locally as “Chao App.”

47% of Thais hit by financial fraudsters

Speaking at the “Bank of Thailand Symposium 2025: Towards Safer and More Inclusive Digital Finance” last week, Nualnoi Treerat, assistant professor at Chulalongkorn University, said 73% of Thais face a high risk of being targeted by scammers, while 47% have already experienced financial fraud.

Thai household debt surges to four-year high

Average household debt in Thailand has surged by 22% from a year ago to reach a four-year high of 740,596 baht, according to a survey by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC). The survey was conducted from Sept 15-22 and had 1,716 respondents.

Unidentified foreigner drowns off Karon Beach

A foreign man drowned while swimming off a Phuket beach at sunset, prompting police to investigate his identity and the circumstances surrounding his death. The man, believed to be around 60 years old, was pulled from the water off Karon Beach. His identity and nationality remain unknown.

Thailand losing war on PM2.5 as country enters another year under smog

Residents of Thailand face a grim reality as they enter 2025, with skies shrouded by fine dust posing a growing risk to their health.

PM2.5, or dust particles measuring less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, can be inhaled deep into the lungs, passing into the bloodstream and lodging in other organs. Unsafe PM2.5 levels blanket 64 provinces

Unsafe levels of PM2.5 dust shrouded Bangkok and 64 of the 76 provinces this morning, with 28 provinces registering red levels and the worst air pollution in Samut Sakhon.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) reached red (hazardous-to-health) levels in 28 provinces, ranging from 75.3 to 133.1 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Bangkok calls for work from home January 20–21 due to PM2.5

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), has announced revised work-from-home (WFH) measures in light of Bangkok’s ongoing PM2.5 air pollution crisis. Projections for PM2.5 levels between today and tomorrow highlight three concerning factors.

If PM2.5 concentrations show a sustained upward trend, WFH measures may be extended through Jan. 24. The BMA has informed WFH network partners to facilitate work planning and minimize disruptions to participating organizations. Continued …

Burnt sugarcane volume on declining trend, says cane and sugar board

The volume of burnt sugarcane during the 2024-25 harvest season is expected to decrease by more than 10% compared to the previous year, with the target set at a 25% reduction, due to several incentives, an official of the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB) said.

The incentives for sugarcane farmers to harvest 100% fresh sugarcane, continuing from last year, aims to increase income from sugarcane leaves and tops. This initiative is expected to help reduce sugarcane burning, lower the causes of PM 2.5 dust pollution, mitigate health impacts on the public, and foster a positive environment for economic activities. Thailand braces for cold weather

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has forecast cold to very cold weather across northern and northeastern Thailand, with temperatures dropping to single digits. Bangkok will see temperatures as low as 18 degrees Celsius. Additionally, five provinces are expected to experience thunderstorms today.

Over the next 24 hours, the northern, northeastern, central, and eastern regions will continue to experience cool to cold weather with morning fog. Upper southern parts, including Bangkok and surrounding areas, will have cool mornings. Continued …

Only 4% of village tap water production clean enough for drinking

The Public Health Ministry plans to have 1,750 more village tap-water plants meet hygiene standards this year after the ministry found that only 420 of all villages nationwide have tap water clean enough for drinking.

Deputy Public Health Minister Dej-is Khaothong said the ministry surveyed 10,271 tap-water plants nationwide from 2018 to 2024, and found that only 420, or 4% of them, produced water hygienic enough for consumption. The survey covered only some of the 69,028 tap-water plants around the country. Continued …

Thailand secures Thai-Myanmar border with barbed wire

According to locals, Thailand has re-fenced illegal entries and exits with barbed wire barriers from the Thai-Myanmar border area on the side of the Phaya Thone Zu area. Before Jan. 15, a resident of Pagoda Thone Zu said that barriers on the Thai side surrounded the illegal entrances and exits to the Thai side.

He continued, “In the past, people from Myanmar had torn the barbed wire to go up and down, and new barbed wire has been re-enclosed. Even though barriers are placed on the Thai side, people do not stop going up and down from the designated areas. Those who go to work on the Thai side also travel regularly.” Continued …

32 Indonesians escape from Myanmar scam hub

As the bosses of a scam center at Myanmar’s Myawaddy township, across the border from Thai town Mae Sot, have come under pressure, 32 Indonesians managed to flee to Thailand yesterday.

A joint patrol of the border by Rajamanu Task Force, Mae Sot and Immigration police and local government officials came across this big group of Indonesians, 30 men and two women, walking along a natural passage to Thailand. Continued …

At the cabinet meeting last week, the government pressed ahead with a major initiative to stimulate the economy by approving the legalization of casinos under the cloak of an “entertainment complex”.

Elephant Panics at Fireworks Display, Injures Several at Fair

An elephant startled by fireworks at a fair in Nong Bua Lamphu, caused chaos on the event’s opening night, injuring five people as it ran through the crowd. The incident occurred Saturday evening during the annual tribute event to King Naresuan the Great.

PM to chair Pheu Thai party meeting in Hua Hin tomorrow

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will take a day away from matters of government tomorrow so she can chair a general meeting of the Pheu Thai Party in Hua Hin. Also attending will be former prime ministers Thaksin Shinawatra, her father, and Srettha Thavisin.

Paetongtarn will travel to Hua Hin by train, departing from Bangkok in the morning, stopping at Bang Bamru railway station to pick up her family, who will include her sister, Pinthongtha Shinawatra Kunakornwong’s family and her elder brother, Panthongtae Shinawatra. Data paints economy as ‘black hole’

I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. It is obvious that GDP data and the actual economic situation do not go hand in hand.

Cabinet approves debt-relief measures

The cabinet on Wednesday approved debt support measures, including interest suspensions and reduced principal payments, to help tackle household and small-business debt, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said. The measures will help retail borrowers and smaller businesses, she told a press conference.

Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira told reporters the cabinet also agreed to allow banks to reduce their annual contribution to the Financial Institutions Development Fund (FIDF) to 0.23% from 0.46% of their deposits for three years. Continued …

Thailand’s shrimp industry battered by disease, low prices

Thai shrimp production is expected to decrease by 4% year-on-year because of disease outbreaks and falling prices, says the Thai Shrimp Assn. Ekapoj Yodpinit, president of the association, said total shrimp production in 2024 is predicted to fall to 270,000 tons, from 280,000 tons last year.

The decline is attributed to disease outbreaks and unstable weather, which affect the quality of baby shrimp and farming conditions. Falling prices have also prompted some farmers to postpone their new farming cycles. Continued …

Nearly 17.5 million motorists will be traveling during New Year break

The upcoming New Year holiday is expected to see a historic surge in people returning to their hometowns or traveling across provinces after the Covid-19 pandemic, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said on Wednesday.

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. Microsoft unveils closed-loop liquid cooling design for data centers

Tech-giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it will start its “zero-water evaporated” liquid cooling systems operations for data centers in 2026. The design is said to optimize AI workloads and consume zero water with the use of a closed-loop design.

Data centers rely heavily on water to remove heat from data halls containing servers and other IT equipment. A substantial amount of water evaporates as part of the cooling process and must be constantly replaced. Young people in Thailand call for a bigger role in climate action

Youth advocates yesterday submitted climate action recommendations to the Royal Thai government. The recommendations drew on a national Suan Dusit Poll of nearly 1,000 children and young people across Thailand, followed by one-to-one discussions between UNICEF and young representatives.

The poll found that 93% of young people reported feeling the impact of climate change in their daily lives, affecting their mental and physical health, and that 85% were eager to take action.
