Doctor Among Two Killed in Cha Am Bypass Crash

Two people were killed and a 53-year-old woman seriously injured after a car crashed into a central reservation barrier on the Cha Am-Pran Buri bypass road in Phetchaburi province yesterday morning. The metal barrier pierced through the vehicle from the front windscreen to the rear, leaving the car severely damaged.

Fuel prices fall by up to 1 baht at Thai pumps

Fuel prices at major petrol stations across Thailand fell again today. The new pump prices cover major oil retailers, including PTT Station, Bangchak, PT, Shell, and Caltex. The update comes as retail fuel prices continue to move in line with market conditions.

Most petrol and gasohol products were reduced by 70 satang per liter, while selected premium diesel products dropped by 1 baht per liter. Some diesel categories remained unchanged, depending on the retailer and product type. Continued … 

56 provinces warned of heavy rain and flood risk

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rain across 56 provinces today, with people in risk areas urged to prepare for possible flash floods and forest run-off.

Thunderstorms are forecast in 60% of the southern east coast region. Heavy rain is expected in some areas. Provinces at risk include Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Continued … 

First Lao Man Rescued From Flooded Gold Mine

A Lao worker trapped inside a gold mine cave in Laos has been rescued after a major international operation involving Thai and Finnish cave diving experts. Rescue teams successfully brought one of five survivors out of the flooded tunnel at 8:40 pm yesterday, according to the Thailand Rescue Diver Facebook page.

The worker was among seven Lao laborers trapped inside a gold mine cave in Long Chaeng, Xaysomboun province, Laos, since May 19. Heavy rain and flash flooding had swept through the mine, cutting off access and leaving the workers stranded underground. Continued …

Koh Samui District Chief Amorn Chumchuay led the operation with Koh Samui district officials, transport officers, police, tourist police, and municipal officers. 26 million sign up for ‘Thais Help Thais’ stimulus

More than 26 million people and over one million businesses registered for Thailand’s “Thais Help Thais Plus 60/40” co-payment scheme ahead of yesterday’s registration deadline.

Deputy government spokeswoman Lalida Persvivatana said yesterday the scheme, which opened for registration on May 25, had continued to attract widespread participation from both consumers and businesses nationwide. As of Thursday, more than 26.2 million people had registered, with 25.48 million successfully approved for benefits. Continued … 

House rejects land bridge study panel

The House of Representatives rejected a proposal to establish a special committee to further study the land bridge megaproject, with government MPs arguing that multiple reviews had already been conducted and additional scrutiny would duplicate existing work.

Thailand’s transit trade rises as durian exports to China surge

Arada Fuangtong, director-general of the Department of Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Commerce, said border and transit trade in April was worth a combined B211.146 billion, up 27.5%.

Exports totaled B121.521 billion, up 25.4%, and imports B89.625 billion, up 30.5%, leaving Thailand with a trade surplus of B31.896 billion for the month. Continued … 

Myanmar-Thailand cargo bridge resumes border trade at Mae Sot

The Myawady-Mae Sot No. 2 Friendship Bridge, a key cargo route on the Myanmar-Thailand border, resumed trade on Thursday morning, local sources said. The bridge had been shut by the Myanmar side since the morning of August 18, 2025, because of continuing military conflict.

A Myawady border trader said the reopening was confirmed at the bridge, where Buddhist protective Parittas were being recited for safety and protection. Thais and other Southeast Asian travelers are continuing to plan travel in the second half of the year, opting for regional destinations even though they might slash their budgets or number of trips, according to online travel agent AirAsia Move.

EVs, PHEVs to reach almost a third of global new-vehicle sales in 2026

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates electric vehicle (EV) sales – including not only EVs but also plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and extended-range EVs (EREVs) – will hit 23 million this year, and account for around 28% of all new cars sold. In a report, the IEA used recent trends and sales data from the first quarter of this year, and forecast EV sales to rise from 20 million last year.

According to the IEA’s numbers, 3.9 million EVs were sold in the first three months of 2026 – down 8% from the same time last year. This is primarily due to falling sales in China, the world’s largest EV market, and the US. Continued … 

Japan passes bill to raise visa fees, introduce online pre-entry screening

Japan’s parliament yesterday passed an immigration control law revision to raise the maximum fee for residence status applications by foreigners and introduce an online pre-entry travel authorisation system for overseas arrivals. Once the fee changes are implemented later this fiscal year, the upper limit will be set at 100,000 yen (20,450 baht) for visa renewals and 300,000 yen for permanent residency applications. Pasu Liptapanlop, director of Proud Real Estate Public Co. (PROUD), revealed the company achieved its highest success in history, setting an all-time high with total revenue of 6,407 million baht, up from 2,268 million baht in the same period last year, representing growth of 183%, and net profit of 168 million baht, up from 57 million baht a year earlier.

Central Plaza Hotel Public Co., parent company of Hua Hin’s Centara’s Grand Beach Resort and Villas, is setting robust growth targets for 2026, aiming for total revenue of T35 billion, a subsubstantial 14%-15% increase from the previous year, according to CEO Thirayuth Chirathivat.

Thai Red Cross urges urgent blood donations as reserves fall

The Thai Red Cross Society (TRCS) is appealing for blood donations from the public, as reserves in its blood bank have dropped drastically below acceptable levels, posing a direct threat to patients who require transfusions.

She said the world is entering an era of the highest uncertainty on record — akin to a “tax” that drags on private-sector investment decisions — amid the rapid advance of AI and robotics, which are significantly reshaping the global value chain.

She said that over the next decade, 1.2 billion people worldwide are expected to enter the labor market, but forecasts suggest there will be only 400 million jobs available. Dual pricing as Thailand’s tourism dilemma

Thailand welcomed 32.9 million foreign visitors in 2025, a 7.23% decline from the year before. While no single factor explains the drop in visitor numbers, the question of whether tourists feel fairly treated is one the industry cannot afford to ignore, and it is a debate that cuts deeper than the price gap alone.

Dual pricing is not unique to Thailand. The Taj Mahal in India and Petra in Jordan both charge foreign tourists more than local visitors, typically framed as a maintenance fee. In Thailand, public attractions like temples and national museums operate under ministerial regulations, while private operators are overseen by the Department of Internal Trade, though the latter are considerably harder to regulate. Too soon to predict China tourism rebound

Despite early signs of a rebound in Chinese arrivals during the first two months, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is downplaying expectations for a strong recovery, preferring to wait until May to assess whether demand has stabilized.

Oil Spill Near Phuket Raises Environmental, Tourism Concerns

Property past its low point; second-hand homes lead, 2026 seen steady

Thailand’s housing market in 2025 was like a ship battling rough seas all year, only beginning to see a glimmer of light in the final quarter. Data from the Real Estate Information Center (REIC) show that in Q4 2025, the market started to recover quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) after short-term stimulus measures, or a “Quick Big Win”, including cuts to transfer and mortgage registration fees and relaxed loan-to-value (LTV) criteria.

Bank of Thailand slashes rate in surprise move to support economy

The Bank of Thailand says the cycle of policy rate cuts has ended, with yesterday’s reduction deemed sufficient to support the Thai economy. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 4-2 yesterday to cut the policy rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 1%, effective immediately.

Two members voted to keep the policy rate unchanged at 1.25%, according to the MPC secretary Don Nakornthab. He said if the Thai economy progresses in line with the committee’s assessment, the downward interest rate cycle can be considered over. Continued …

Thai Rice Exports Fall 17.5% as Baht Strengthens

Thai rice exports fell by 17.5% in January compared with the same month last year, as a strong baht reduced the country’s price competitiveness. Export volume totaled 530,287 tons, down from 643,144 tons a year earlier. Export value dropped to B9.707 billion, a 30.7% decrease.

Charoen Laothamatas, president of the Thai Rice Exporters Assn., said the appreciation of the Thai baht to around 31 THB per US dollar was the main cause. For every 1 THB the baht strengthens, Thai rice becomes US$12–15 more expensive per ton. Compared with the same period in 2025, the stronger currency has pushed prices up by US$40 per ton. U-Tapao Airport project to kick off on April 3

Chula Sukmanop, secretary-general of the Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO), provided an update on the B290-billion U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Aviation City development, saying the EECO will issue a notice to proceed (NTP) to U-Tapao International Aviation Co., (UTA) on April 3, 2026. The date will mark the official start of the 50-year project timeline, with the concession due to end in 2076.

This progress came after the EECO signed a contract management agreement for the joint investment project with UTA, the concessionaire, on Jan.29, under which UTA agreed to waive certain contractual conditions precedent related to the construction plan and the operation of the high-speed rail link connecting the three airports — resolving the deadlock that had delayed the project for nearly five and a half years. Thai border trade value up 11% in January

Thailand’s overall border and transit trade in January reached a total value of 161.1 billion baht, a 10.9% increase year-on-year, with China remaining a leading transit market, said deputy government spokeswoman Lalida Persvivatana.

Thailand Records Bt1.9 Trillion in 2025 Border Trade

Thailand’s border trade grew to Bt1.937 trillion in 2025, a 6.7% increase from the previous year, as reported by the Ministry of Commerce. Ultrafine dust levels were in the red (hazardous-to-health) in 46 out of the 76 provinces and in greater Bangkok this morning, with only 10 provinces reporting moderate to good air quality.

Cambodian authorities successfully rescued a man who was kidnapped in Thailand, drugged, and transported to Cambodia, where he was held captive. At the same time, his captors attempted to extort a ransom from his family.

Thai cabinet approves carbon tax

The cabinet yesterday agreed to levy a carbon tax of 200 baht per ton of carbon emissions as part of the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, said Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul. The tax, however, will be included in the existing oil tax and will not affect the retail price of oil and oil products, Paopoom said.

The measure is a change in the internal structure of the excise tax that calculates the carbon price embedded in the oil tax, he said. Continued …

Weather warnings have been issued for 33 provinces in Thailand, forecasting heavy rain covering 30% of areas due to a new wave of cold air bringing strong winds and a significant temperature drop expected today.

In the south (east coast), thunderstorms are expected in 40% of the area, with heavy rain in some places, mainly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat provinces. Thailand shifts gears to keep diesel costs under control

The Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) uhas nveiled its plan to keep Thailand’s diesel prices under 33 baht per liter, even though the current subsidy scheme is coming to a halt. This decision steers from an unexpected upturn in OFFO’s finances, courtesy of plummeting global oil prices.

Fiscal 2024’s figures saw a dip in OFFO’s losses, thanks to reduced outlays on domestic diesel subsidies. Although OFFO is sticking to its guns by supporting diesel prices through the fund, it has decided not to seek the cabinet’s go-ahead for extending the subsidy program, said Pornchai Jirakulpisan, the OFFO policy and strategy department chief. Thailand boosts climate resilience in coastal areas with UN grant

Thailand is enhancing its capacity to tackle the escalating threat of climate change, particularly in its marine and coastal areas. This initiative, a collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), is titled “Increasing Resilience to Climate Change Impacts in Marine and Coastal Areas along the Gulf of Thailand”, and is supported by a US$3 million (101.2 million baht) grant from the Green Climate Fund.

Developing countries begin to say no to waste colonialism from developed nations

Despite China’s ban on solid waste imports three years ago, developed countries continue to exploit regulatory loopholes to export waste to developing countries, including China, avoiding higher recycling costs at home. Other developing countries, such as those in Southeast Asia, alongside China, have increasingly restricted foreign waste imports, but this has not halted the practice.

A key driver of this issue is the profitability and low risk of waste trafficking. Developed countries, aiming to cut costs, use “waste colonialism” as a tactic, exporting plastic and other low-value waste, Ma Jun, director of the Beijing-based Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs says.
