Qatari tourist assaults Hua Hin residents, to be deported

A Qatari tourist is accused of injuring five people during a violent outburst that began inside a cannabis shop in Hua Hin, before spilling onto the street and ending with members of the public restraining him.

The incident took place Sunday evening and prompted a response from Hua Hin Police. Witnesses said the man damaged property, assaulted shop staff and attacked several people nearby, including a disabled flower seller using a wheelchair. Continued …

Peace talks with southern insurgency groups put off after Narathiwat attacks

The Thai government has indefinitely postponed peace talks with southern insurgency groups after two attacks last week, with five rangers killed and six civilians injured in one of them, while a police officer was slightly injured in a car bomb blast.

Thanat Suwannanon, director of the National Intelligence Agency and head of the peace talks delegation for southern border provinces, said negotiations had started well but then the attacks suddenly occurred and a statement was issued while the technical team was attending the talks. Continued …

Despite rising costs, the Thai restaurant industry is expected to continue expanding this year, according to an executive of Central Restaurants Group Co . (CRG). Nath Vongphanich, chief executive of CRG, anticipates the government’s “Thai Chuay Thai Plus” co-payment scheme will help lift sales among small restaurateurs in the second half of 2026.

Thai June factory output falls 3.1% y/y, weaker than forecast

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped 3.1% in June from a ‌year earlier, the Industry Ministry said yesterday, weaker than analysts’ forecasts. The June reading compared with a forecast increase of 0.2% in a Reuters poll. The May reading was revised to a fall of 1.3% from an original ‌figure of a 0.8% drop.

The main drags on the MPI were weaker automobile and petroleum production, while tensions in the Middle East added pressure from volatile energy and freight costs, the ministry said. Continued …

Cabinet keeps VAT at 7% for another year

The Cabinet yesterday decided to retain the 7% value-added tax (VAT) rate for another year, until Sept. 30, 2027. Government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said maintaining the 7% VAT rate will help ease the cost-of-living burden, stimulate domestic consumption and stabilize the economy.

Thai vehicle sales rise 17% in June

New vehicle sales in Thailand expanded by 17% to 58,724 units in June, up from 50,079 units a year earlier, according to the latest data released by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Thai AirAsia temporarily suspends nine routes from Suvarnabhumi

Thai AirAsia has announced it will temporarily suspend services from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) from July 15 to Sept. 30, then resume operations on Oct. 1. During the period, the airline will suspend all flights on the nine routes it had operated from Suvarnabhumi.

Indian Tourists Rescued After Kidnap Ordeal in Pattaya

Three Indian tourists have been rescued by Thai police after being kidnapped, tortured and held for ransom for five days in Pattaya in what investigators believe is a new form of scam targeting foreign visitors.

The rescue took place yesterday after officers from Pattaya City Police, Chonburi Immigration, Nong Prue Police and investigators from all three agencies surrounded a townhouse in Moo 13, Nong Prue, Bang Lamung district. Police said the suspected kidnappers fled on motorcycles moments before officers entered the property. Four Pattaya Ladyboys Arrested Over Australian Tourist Robbery

Four ladyboys have been arrested in connection with the violent robbery of an Australian tourist in Pattaya, more than seven months after the alleged attack took place. Tourist Police announced the arrests yesterday following a lengthy investigation into the incident involving a 53-year-old Australian national.

Erawan National Park closes due to forest fires, PM2.5 spike

Erawan National Park in Kanchanaburi has temporarily closed all tourism activities and overnight stays after worsening forest fires and hazardous PM2.5 pollution levels exceeded safety standards, officials said yesterday.

Park chief Phiphat Chimpli said the closure follows ongoing forest fire and haze conditions in the area, which have pushed the 24-hour average PM2.5 level to 42.9 micrograms per cubic metre — considered harmful to both visitors and staff. ‘Super El Niño’ could extend Thailand’s dry season into next year

The Climate Change and Environment Department has warned that the country may face the effects of a “super El Niño,” which could extend the dry season by up to one and a half years.

Citing the Climate Risk Index 2026–2027 by Germanwatch, the department’s director-general, Phirun Saiyasitpanich, said Thailand’s ranking among countries most affected by extreme heat has risen from 72nd place in 2020 to 17th in 2024. Continued …

Trump extends ceasefire until Iran can submit pivotal proposal

US President Donald Trump announced yesterday that he would extend the ceasefire with Iran until the country submitted a peace proposal and “discussions are concluded, one way or the other.”

Energy crisis batters aviation, 150,000 flights cut worldwide

A deepening oil crisis triggered by ongoing conflict in the Middle East is dealing a severe blow to the global aviation industry, with Thai airlines also facing mounting pressure as jet fuel prices surge and supply risks intensify. Jet fuel prices have surged by between two and three times — or about 129% — amid growing concerns over possible supply shortages.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global jet fuel prices rose sharply from US$99.04 per barrel (about 3,300 baht per barrel) in late February to US$209 per barrel (about 7,400 baht per barrel) in early April. Continued …

Thai homebuyers pull back as ‘Generation Rent’ gains ground

Thailand’s housing market is showing signs of a structural shift, with would-be buyers pulling back and more people turning to renting instead. The latest data from DDproperty shows that nationwide demand to buy residential property fell 6% in the first quarter of 2026, while rental demand rose 4%. In Bangkok, rental demand climbed even faster, jumping 9%.

KKP cuts GDP forecast, warns Thailand faces recession risk

KKP Research, the economic research unit of Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group, has cut its base-case forecast for Thailand’s 2026 GDP growth to 1.3% from 1.8% and raised its headline inflation forecast to 3.0% from 0.2%, warning that a prolonged oil shock could leave the country exposed to recession risks.

The research house said Thailand now faces a more dangerous mix of slowing growth and rising prices, with the economy vulnerable through four channels at the same time. Thai Vietjet has begun adjusting its network as the energy crisis linked to the war in the Middle East pushes airline costs sharply higher, with some services now being suspended temporarily during the Summer 2026 schedule.

The March 2026 Hotel Business Operator Sentiment Index survey, conducted by the Thai Hotels Assn. Thai motorists are paying less for diesel from today after PTT Oil and Retail Business (OR) and Bangchak Corp. (BCP) announced a B1.20-per-liter reduction in retail diesel prices, following a decision by the Oil Fuel Fund Management Committee on Sunday. The new prices took effect on today from 5 am. The collection of Donald Trump’s retaliatory customs tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was ruled unlawful by the US Supreme Court on Feb. 20. Following the ruling, the US president signed an executive order to enforce a new global customs tariff of 10% under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, effective at 12:01 am today.

Baht breaks below 31 per dollar

The baht has strengthened again, breaking below 31 per US dollar and marking its strongest level in a week, after Donald Trump’s global 15% tariff move weighed on the US dollar. Kasikornbank and Krungthai Bank said the baht could continue to strengthen on capital inflows, the export outlook, and a surge of investment flowing into Thailand.

The baht is expected to depreciate to around 33.80 against the U.S. dollar this week, driven by a firmer greenback following the temporary pause in the U.S.-China tariff war. However, the Thai currency is expected to remain volatile.

New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The Cabinet has approved a total budget of Bt1.9 billion to subsidize power bills for vulnerable groups during September–December 2024. For power bills in September, the Cabinet approved that the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the Provincial Electricity Authority allocate a subtotal budget of Bt472.67 million for the subsidy.

The retroactive measure means that vulnerable individuals with power bills recorded at no higher than 300 units during the four-month period are eligible for the subsidy, equivalent to a 19.05 satang discount per unit. Construction to be halted on Rama II Road for new year travel ease

The Transport Ministry has announced the suspension of all construction activities along Rama II Road from Dec. 26 to Jan. 2 next year. No plans to increase VAT to 15%, PM assures

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Friday denied reports that the government intended to raise value-added tax (VAT) to 15%, taking to social media to address public concerns.
