Hua Hin marathon to run Sunday

Starting times for the Hua Hin Marathon 2026 have been confirmed, with organizers expecting more than 3,500 runners to take part in the annual race on Sunday, May 10. The event will include four race distances and aims to raise funds for environmental conservation in the city.

The United States shot down multiple Iranian missiles and drones fired at US Navy and commercial vessels and destroyed six of Tehran’s small boats, a top US admiral said yesterday.

The hostilities occurred as American forces seek to facilitate the transit of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz in an effort dubbed “Project Freedom”. Cost tsunami hits Thailand — energy shock ripples through key sectors

Thailand’s economy is being hit by what economists describe as a “cost tsunami”, as the Middle East conflict enters its third month following US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, driving up energy prices and placing pressure on both businesses and households.

The Bank of Thailand warned that the impact would fall most heavily on vulnerable groups, whose energy costs are rising significantly faster than their incomes. Thailand’s economy grew in Q1, before the Middle East conflict

Thailand’s economy experienced growth in the first quarter, driven by both demand and supply-side factors. On the demand side, merchandise exports, excluding gold, continued to rise, particularly in technology-related products.

Thailand’s tourism sector is facing an unprecedented convergence of crises, as geopolitical tensions, soaring energy costs, and structural economic weaknesses collide to form what analysts are calling a “perfect storm.”

Since the eruption of “Operation Epic Fury” on Feb. 28, the economic fallout has been swift and severe. Thailand’s GDP growth forecast has been downgraded from 2.0%–2.4% to just 1.5%–1.6%, while inflation has surged to 2.9%–3.0%, nearing the upper limit of the Bank of Thailand’s target range. Oil price assumptions have been revised sharply upward from $57.5 to $91 per barrel, while the current account surplus has halved from $12 billion to $6 billion. The Hua Hin Motor Show opened with a focus on new electric vehicles and promotional offers, as organizers aim to attract buyers and support the local automotive sector. The event was officially opened by Suwat Liptapanlop at the Hua Hin Convention Center on the first floor of Blúport Hua Hin Resort Mall. The show runs until Sunday.

Thailand swelters as temperatures hit 42°C

The Thai Meteorological Department has warned that much of Thailand will experience hot to extremely hot conditions today to April 9, with maximum temperatures expected to exceed 42°C in some areas, alongside hazy skies during the daytime.

In its latest forecast, the department said upper Thailand will continue to be dominated by a heat-induced low-pressure system, resulting in widespread high temperatures and reduced visibility due to haze. Phuket Taxi Drivers to Strike Over Fuel Costs and App Fares

Taxi drivers in Phuket have announced a one-day strike on Monday, citing rising fuel costs and falling fares due to competition from ride-hailing applications. Three baht scenarios as oil spikes: what currency swings could mean for Thailand’s exports and tourism

Yuthasak Supasorn, chairman of the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand and former governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said Thailand is a net oil importer, relying on crude imports for around 86% of domestic consumption. He added that energy imports account for about 6.5% of GDP, leaving the economy highly exposed when oil prices surge.

A sensitivity analysis by financial institutions, he said, suggests that every US$10 per barrel increase in global crude prices could reduce Thailand’s trade balance by around 0.9% of GDP, because the country must spend substantial US dollars to pay for energy. Khao Hin Lek Fai, one of Hua Hin’s most recognizable viewpoints, is set to undergo major improvements aimed at transforming it into a new landmark attraction, following discussions led by Hua Hin City Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul.

The project’s main objectives are to upgrade the area’s infrastructure and improve visitor facilities. Scam Gangs Shift Base From Cambodia To Thailand

Scam gangs are allegedly relocating their operations from Cambodia to Thailand after a joint crackdown by South Korean and Cambodian police, according to a report by Sisa Journal. The South Korean magazine’s investigation revealed that the move follows increased law enforcement pressure in Cambodia, with scammers seeking safer ground in neighboring Thailand.

A journalist from Sisa Journal contacted a middle manager of a scam center in Thailand,between Oct. 17- 21.  The manager said that scam operations linked to human trafficking continue without signs of stopping, despite international efforts to dismantle them. Thai construction giant denies links to call center scams

One of Thailand’s leading construction companies, Sino-Thai Engineering & Construction Public Co. (STECON), filed a complaint against two members of Parliament (MPs) from the People’s Party, claiming both accused the company of involvement in a call center scam network.

The United States and United Kingdom recently accused the Prince Holding Group, owned by 32-year-old Chinese-born Chen Zhi, of operating a call center scam in Southeast Asia. The company now faces financial sanctions and asset seizures worth hundreds of billions of baht. Continued …

Minister under fire as PM seeks clarification on alleged Cambodia scam link

Deputy Finance Minister Vorapak Tanyawong has been ordered by the prime minister to clarify, in writing, an allegation that he is among seven Thai politicians believed to be connected with Cambodia’s Prince Group, a major transnational scam syndicate named by the US Department of Justice.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Vorapak promised to send him a written clarification and would also give a press conference about the allegation against him, adding that, if anyone in his administration is found to be involved with scam activities, they will be dealt with in accordance with the law. Belgian tourist dies kite surfing in Pranburi

A Belgian man lost his life yesterday while kitesurfing off Pranburi’s coastline. The victim, identified as Mr. Brendan, 55, was swept onto rocks by powerful waves at Khao Kalok, located within the Thaokosa Forest Park in Pak Nam Pran, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

Local police were alerted to the incident in the evening after the kitesurfer failed to return to shore. Emergency services, including rescue volunteers and forest park officials, responded swiftly, but the challenging weather conditions, including high tides and strong waves, made the rescue operation extremely hazardous. Transwoman robbed by teenager in Hua Hin

Four Thai dishes were named among the 100 worst in the world by the TasteAtlas website recently. Of them, kaeng tai pla (fish-entrails sour curry), a thick and aromatic fish curry originating in southern Thailand, was ranked 10th-worst with a score of 2.2 points.

Clean Air Act making strides, expected to be passed in April

For the past few years, Thailand has been plagued by air pollution and increasing health hazards from many key causes. The government has been working on the Clean Air Act for the past year and it is expected to be implemented by April. Change in the tax law does target expats living in Thailand

A former chairman of an international law firm in Bangkok has warned that a new taxation directive issued by the Revenue Department targeting foreign income sources faces a legal challenge and will create more reporting obligations and confusion. The order published on Sept. 15 2altering a 38-year-old interpretation, is a definite step by the government to widen the tax base, meaning more significant reporting requirements, at the very least for expats living in Thailand.

Kitipong Urapeepattanapong, along with other legal experts, including a Supreme Court judge, is calling on the Thai government to overhaul the tax system thoroughly to make it competitive with Hong Kong and Singapore. Continued …

Open to 4am is OK, but alcohol sales are not

The Thai government will initially permit bars and nightclubs in four provinces, including Chonburi, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok, to operate until 4am, as announced by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Friday.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, however, “Every private sector shall follow the laws, especially, the extension of opening service of entertainment districts to 4am, but it does not mean that selling liquor beyond prescribed legal hours: 2am. However, the customers may still be inside the venues, which is good for products and services other than alcohol.” Continued …
