New Don Mueang Airport shuttle links to Hua Hin, Pattaya

A new feeder shuttle bus service, linking Don Mueang International Airport to Hua Hin and Pattaya, is going to make it a whole lot easier for tourists to experience some of Thailand’ most iconic destinations.

The first route zips passengers from Don Mueang Airport straight to Pattaya, spanning a distance of 162 kilometers. The second route forges a path between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin, stretching 216 kilometers. For 200 baht, travelers can enjoy a scenic three-and-a-half-hour ride.

Wildlife sanctuary in Kanchanaburi closed permanently for restoration

The Salak Phra Wildlife Sanctuary in Kanchanaburi province spans Muang Kanchanaburi, Si Sawat, Bo Phloi and Nong Prue districts. It was established as Thailand’s first wildlife sanctuary in 1965, covering an area of around 858.55 square kilometers or about 536,594 rai.

Recently, Atthaphon Charoenchansa, director general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, issued an order to close the Salak Phra Wildlife Sanctuary permanently to all access, prohibiting the collection of forest products in any form, to allow for indefinite forest-restoration efforts. PM to approve 10,000-baht digital wallet phase 3

A source from the Government House revealed that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra today will chair the first meeting of the Economic Stimulus Policy Committee. A cargo ship towing barges carrying cement collided with a coral reef near Koh Talu in Prachuap Khiri Khan, causing severe damage after rough seas led to the failure of its anchor chain.

On Sunday, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) received a report from local conservation networks that a cement cargo ship traveling from Bangkok to Pattani had run into difficulties due to strong winds and rough seas. In an attempt to seek shelter, the crew anchored near Koh Talu in Bang Saphan Noi district. Thailand has scrapped a requirement for its upcoming casino-entertainment complex project. Originally, Thais needed to show proof of having 50 million baht in a fixed deposit to gain entry. Now, they just need to demonstrate they have filed tax returns for the past three years.

The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Phuket is witnessing an alarming rise in financial fraud, with over 5,500 individuals falling victim to scams in the past year, resulting in cumulative losses of 413 million baht. These figures were confirmed by the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) Region 5.

There has been a sharp increase in scam activities since 2022. Last year, while there were 1,365 reported victims, who collectively lost 10.9 million baht. In a move that could significantly impact expatriates and Thai nationals alike, Thailand’s government is contemplating adjustments to the taxation of overseas income. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira has indicated that the global economic landscape necessitates a re-evaluation of current tax regulations, though specific details were not provided.

Presently, the Thai Revenue Department (TRD) stipulates that, effective Jan. 1, 2024, any assessable income transferred into Thailand from abroad by either Thai citizens or foreigners residing in Thailand for at least 180 days within a calendar year will be subject to personal income tax. Young Woman’s Tragic End in PKK Highlights Gambling Dangers

A 22-year-old woman, Natthaporn, was tragically found dead under a mango tree in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. She was reportedly overwhelmed by debt from online slot machine gambling. Her husband, Sukit, discovered her lifeless body Thursday after she failed to return home.

Wildfires rage across northern Thailand

The north of Thailand is grappling with a surge in wildfires, with 401 hotspots detected across 17 provinces, the Region 3 Forest Fire Control Center said. Phetchabun province has been particularly affected, registering 82 hotspots – the highest in the region – with fires spreading across almost the entire province.

The latest data released Thursday reveals the scale of the crisis. While specific data for other provinces was unavailable as of press time, Phetchabun’s 82 hotspots are of significant concern. Many Thai nationals who were once part of international scam call centers are now claiming they were tricked into it. Thai authorities recently cracked down on fraudulent call centers operating along the Thai-Myanmar border. These scam hubs had been conning people out of their hard-earned money, but when the government cut off their power supply, the scammers were left stranded and forced to return home.

The Gold Traders Assn. this morning announced buying prices for gold ornaments at 45,222.28 baht per baht weight and for gold bars at 46,050 baht per baht weight.

RE: Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax

“Thank you for the article ‘Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax‘ and thank you ‘Thesatat’ for being a ‘pipe cleaner’ trying to be a good person and file taxes in PKK. The head of the PKK tax office personally promised us at a meeting in Hua Hin that “All DTAs will be honored.” Clearly, he hasn’t shared that with his subordinates. Personally, I’m going through AIT (American International Tax Advisors) and let them deal with these issues. At the end of the day (which may be two to three years out – maybe more – we hope to pay only what is legally required.” – PB

Editor: We have asked the tax consultants we used for our previous reporting to assess this latest news, but this is probably just a lack of understanding on the part of local officials about the tax. We anticipated this might be a problem early on, as the law is ambiguous and there are roughly 90 dual tax treaties to be considered, not all the same. We doubt, at this stage, that there has been any education of local officials, and even if there is, the complications might make them resort to an “everyone has to pay the tax” mentality. There will probably be a lot of misinformation on this issue as we go forward and we will try to keep you informed as we hear about problems or solutions. Getting expert guidance as you have done is probably a wise move.

“In cases like U.S. Social Security, the rules are clear: it is not taxable in Thailand, nor does it need to be included on a Thai tax return. However, misunderstandings at the local level can lead to unnecessary stress and potential disputes with tax authorities.

“For expats looking to avoid these difficulties, using a professional tax filing service can help ensure compliance while avoiding the frustration of dealing with tax offices unfamiliar with international tax agreements.”

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is conducting an investigation into alleged connections between senior police officers and criminal activities linked to scam operations across the Burmese border. Unsafe levels of smog in 67 provinces

Sixty-seven out of 77 provinces in Thailand were shrouded with unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution this morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Operator of plastic waste warehouse that caught fire ‘violated industrial laws’

The operator of Teng Fa Plastic and Metal warehouse in Ban Paew district of Samut Sakhon province, which was engulfed in flames on Wednesday, was allegedly in violation of industrial laws, the Provincial Industry Office said.

A fire broke out at a large pile of recyclable plastic and rubber waste at the 13-rai (2.08 hectares) garbage warehouse compound, destroying two warehouses there. Thailand is taking its fight against air pollution to the skies, deploying special flight operations to tackle the dangerous PM2.5 dust particles. Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri announced that the innovative operations have already improved air quality in key regions, including Bangkok, the central region, and the upper north.

Expats in Thailand warned of scams targeting bank accounts

A chief of police issued a warning to retirees in Thailand after two British expats in Pattaya were targetted by scammers attempting to drain their bank accounts. Police Lt. Col. Saksit Choobunrueang yesterday, announced that the elderly are being targetted by scam gangs because of their limited knowledge of technology.

The retirees, both residents of Thailand, received separate phone calls from the fraudsters claiming they might not need to register for a TIN (tax identification number), provided some routine checks confirmed their exemption. Continued …

Air pollution hazardous or moderately dangerous to health was detected in 58 out of 77 provinces across Thailand this morning.

Air pollution soars in Thai capital again, surpassing safety standards

Bangkok was ranked ninth among countries with the poorest air quality worldwide today. The capital’s air quality index surged to 163 as of 9am, higher than the safe standard of 0-50, according to the IQAir website.

Upper Thailand to get colder, heavy rain forecast for south

Another strong high-pressure system from China will extend to Thailand and the South China Sea from Friday to Monday, causing a decrease in temperature and strong winds in the area, the Thai Meteorological Department said in a weather warning today.

A decrease of 5-7 °C is likely in the north and the northeast regions, and temperatures will drop by 3-5 °C in the central region, including Bangkok metropolitan area, the east and the upper south during the same period, the department said. Continued …

Big boost in air travel over the New Year holiday
