Bank of Thailand aims to quickly unlock frozen accounts

The Bank of Thailand is expediting efforts to unlock the financial transactions of suspended accounts affected by investigations into mules. In collaboration with relevant agencies, the regulator is upgrading its operational processes to better distinguish between mule accounts and legitimate ones, allowing the public to transfer money as usual.

Under the new system, banks will be able to unlock suspended transactions within one day, or as quickly as 3–4 hours per case, compared with the previous 3–7 days. Is Vietnam Becoming the New Thailand?

In 2015, Thailand was in the midst of a major export boom, running a current account surplus of $28 billion. The following year, the surplus jumped to $43 billion. Thailand maintained these large current account surpluses, anchored by exports of agriculture, manufactured goods, and services, right up until the COVID-19 pandemic.

An economy based around exports like Thailand’s is especially vulnerable to external shocks that disrupt normal patterns of travel and commerce, like pandemics or trade wars. Even now, Thailand is struggling with a slow recovery in exports that has contributed to the country’s weak economic growth. Major road works begin at Hua Hin airport tunnel

Major road works have started around Hua Hin Airport as part of a year-long upgrade to prepare the airport for international operations. The project, which began on Aug. 31 and is scheduled to run until Aug. 23, 2026, includes expanding the vehicle and railway tunnels and improving runway safety areas to meet Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) standards.

The construction will see the vehicle tunnel expanded by up to 41.5 meters and the railway tunnel by up to 38.5 meters. Runway safety areas will also be upgraded to enhance the airport’s ability to handle international flights. Continued …

Prachuap Khiri Khan tourism statistics show slight growth

Prachuap Khiri Khan welcomed more than 6.8 million visitors between January and July, according to the latest figures from the provincial office of Tourism and Sports. The number represents a slight year-on-year increase of 0.77%.

For much of the last 50 years, high-income countries have consumed massive amounts of plastic and trash and given little thought to what would become of it. But this model could be coming to an end as some of the top waste-importing countries in Southeast Asia have started to ban foreign waste imports this year. Police have arrested members of the infamous “Sergeant M16” drug trafficking network, a syndicate accused of moving more than 10 million methamphetamine pills, during a raid on a pool villa in Hua Hin.

Bangkok Bank enforcing stricter account verification

Bangkok Bank has recently begun enforcing stricter account verification requirements, in line with new government directives aimed at boosting security and cracking down on cybercrime and scams. Customers have been asked to visit their branch with identification documents, such as a passport, to verify their account details.

However, many foreign customers have reported that their accounts were suspended — leaving them unable to withdraw cash, transfer funds, or pay bills. Even after completing the verification process, some expats have reported their accounts being frozen for up to seven days.

Other banks are expected to adopt similar measures soon, as part of broader changes to Thailand’s banking and SIM card registration systems. – HHT
