Immigration office closures during Songkran announced

Immigration office closures during Songkran and other April public holidays are set to affect Hua Hin, Cha Am and the rest of Thailand, with foreigners being advised to plan ahead for visa extensions, 90-day reporting, and other services.

Officials said immigration offices nationwide will close from: April 4-6 for Chakri Memorial Day and the substitution holiday, and again April 11-15 for the Songkran festival. Continued … 

ERC sets power tariff at 3.95 baht per unit for May-August

Thailand’s Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved an average electricity tariff of 3.95 baht per unit for the May-August 2026 billing cycle, up from the current 3.88 baht, after setting the fuel tariff, or Ft, at 16.23 satang per unit.

The new rate, excluding VAT, combines the Ft with the base tariff of 3.78 baht per unit. The regulator said the decision was aimed at balancing actual energy costs with cost-of-living pressures, as global energy markets remain volatile amid unrest in the Middle East. Continued … 

Hua Hin hands out more than 550 motorcycle helmets to schoolchildren

More than 550 motorcycle helmets have been distributed to students in Hua Hin as part of a road safety initiative ahead of the Songkran festival, when traffic volumes and accident risks typically increase. The helmets were handed out on Tuesday morning at Ban Bor Fai Municipal School, with students from municipal and other local schools receiving the safety equipment.

The initiative was organised by Vilhelm International Academy and The Hub Hua Hin and attended by Hua Hin City Municipality Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul, who said road safety remains a key concern in the lead-up to the holiday period. Continued … 

Hua Hin Motor Show opens at Bluport

The Hua Hin Motor Show opened yesterday with a focus on new electric vehicles and promotional offers, as organizers aim to attract buyers and support the local automotive sector. Thailand swelters under extreme heat as temperatures hit 42C

Thailand is bracing for another day of intense heat, with the Thai Meteorological Department warning that temperatures could soar to as high as 42C in some parts of the country today.

Pathum Thani Police Officers Removed Over Gold Necklace Extortion

Eight police officers in Pathum Thani have been removed following allegations they extorted a valuable gold necklace from a local couple. The woman, who runs a snooker club, reported that the incident occurred at her home on March 25. Officers allegedly demanded 200,000 baht, ultimately taking a gold necklace valued at nearly 150,000 baht.

The officers reportedly arrived without permission, claiming to be on duty, and searched Yuwadee’s house. Failing to find illegal items, they focused on a notebook listing debts owed to her. Senate President Mongkol Surasajja signaled readiness to follow the House of Representatives in scrapping complimentary meals, describing the move as a necessary response to economic pressures.

Thailand to cancel sea-boundary deal wth Cambodia

The cancellation of the 2001 memorandum of understanding on overlapping maritime claims with Cambodia, popularly known as MoU 44, will be included in the government’s policy statement to parliament, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said yesterday.

Anutin said the policy statement was nearly finalized and expected to be submitted this week. He said the scrapping of MoU 44 would be explicitly addressed in the statement, while MoU 43 — an agreement on land boundaries signed in 2000 (Buddhist year 2543) remained under consideration. Oil prices surge more than 5% as Trump signals more strikes on Iran

Oil prices jumped by more than 5% today after US President Donald Trump said Washington would continue striking Iran, including energy and oil targets, over the coming weeks, while offering no firm timetable for an end to the war.

Thailand Diesel Prices Rise Again as Subsidy Cut Drives Increase

Thailand’s diesel price will rise by B3.50 per liter today after the Oil Fuel Fund Committee reduced its subsidy, pushing the retail price of standard diesel to B44.24 per liter.

Fuel price hike sparks panic and long queues at Pattaya petrol stations

Residents in Pattaya rushed to fuel stations late yesterday after authorities confirmed a sharp increase in fuel prices, leading to long queues and temporary shortages across the city. Thailand Post the latest to add fuel surcharge

Thailand Post plans to impose a fuel surcharge of 3 baht per item on domestic Express Mail Service (EMS) and e-CoPost services from April 16, citing higher fuel costs.

ML Peekthong Thongyai, vice chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), released findings from the FTI CEO Poll No. 49 for March 2026, under the theme “Business won’t tolerate it: the private sector’s voice on corruption.” The poll surveyed 645 executives across 48 industry groups and 76 provincial FTI councils nationwide, and found corruption continues to be a major obstacle to business operations and wider economic development. Amid global volatility and surging energy prices, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced a major strategic adjustment to respond to signs of a slowdown among long-haul visitors, shifting greater attention to the domestic market and short-haul travelers through an approach centered on value and world-class experiences.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, governor of TAT, said an assessment in March showed that arrivals from long-haul markets, particularly the Middle East, had begun to soften because of airline seat constraints and higher transport costs linked to rising oil prices. Thailand’s PM2.5 crisis has reached a severe level, with fresh data today from IQAir showing air quality in Chiang Mai Municipality had worsened dramatically, pushing it up to the rank of the world’s second most polluted city.

The city recorded an AQI of 231, placing it in the purple zone, a level considered to have serious health effects on everyone. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched a system trial of the On Nut waste-to-energy plant to help tackle the city’s waste problem and provide a new source of sustainable power.

Cha Am rounds up homeless people after Hua Hin murder

Police began rounding up homeless people in places along Cha Am beach as part of a drive to prevent crimes such as the brutal murder in adjacent Hua Hin, where the detention of the suspect was extended yesterday.

The two tourist towns about 200 kilometers south of Bangkok have been shocked by the robbery and killing of a hotel receptionist early Monday in downtown Hua Hin. The murder suspect was arrested the following day. Continued …

Gasohol E85 sales to end from Feb 1 as demand declines

PTT Oil and Retail Business (OR) has announced it will stop selling Gasohol E85, effective Feb. 1, citing a continued decline in consumer demand. The decision has drawn wide attention because Gasohol E85 is used by a significant number of motorists.

OR said it had reviewed market demand and found that demand for Gasohol E85 has continued to decline. It attributed the trend largely to the government’s use of the Oil Fuel Fund mechanism, which has shifted from a compensation/subsidy model to a levy-collection model. Temperature drop and strong winds to hit Thailand this weekend

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) is forecasting a moderate high-pressure system from China to extend into upper Thailand, bringing a decrease in temperature and strong winds. The northeast is expected to experience a drop in temperature by 2-4°C, while other regions, excluding the lower south, will see a temperature decrease of 1-2°C.

The TMD also warns that the moderated northeast monsoon will dominate the Gulf and the south, bringing isolated thundershowers. In the lower Gulf, winds and waves are expected to reach about 2 meters high, and ships are advised to proceed with caution. Continued …

Over 8,000 Troops Join Thailand for Cobra Gold 2026

Thailand is set to host the 45th Cobra Gold military exercise from Feb. 24 to March 6, involving over 8,000 personnel from 30 countries. This joint defense operation, co-hosted by the Royal Thai Armed Forces and US Indo-Pacific Command, is one of the region’s largest and will focus on coordination across land, sea, air, space, and cyber domains.

The annual exercise, traditionally a platform for enhancing regional defense cooperation, sees Cambodia absent this year, while Vietnam and Laos join as observers. 3 Thai children set homeless man on fire, film incident as trophy

Three Thai attackers, aged between nine and 15, set a homeless man on fire by the roadside in the Prawet area of Bangkok and filmed the incident as a trophy. The victim was identified as a homeless man who lives under the Ban Ma Bridge in Prawet. He makes a living by collecting and reselling recyclable waste in the area.

The incident occurred on Monday while Karn was sleeping under the bridge as usual. He told local media that he suddenly felt what seemed like cold water poured over his body, before flames erupted moments later. Thailand is bracing for a chilly spell, with the Meteorological Department forecasting a temperature drop in northern and northeastern regions by 2–4°C during Dec. 8–10. Meanwhile, central and eastern parts will see a decrease of 1–3°C. The drop in temperature is due to a surge of cold air from China, bringing crisp mornings and chilly winds to many northern areas.

Southeast Asia floods may be the new normal, scientists say

Climate scientists expect the punishing storms, floods, and devastation experienced in Southeast Asia to become the new normal, driven by climate patterns set last year. The unusually severe floods this year, caused by late-arriving storms and relentless rain, have wreaked havoc, catching many places off guard.

Some 1,750 people have died across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, with more than 1,000 still missing in floods and landslides. In Indonesia, entire villages are isolated after bridges and roads were swept away. In Sri Lanka, there is a huge paucity of clean water, while Thailand’s prime minister acknowledged shortcomings in his government’s response. Continued …

Bangkok on alert as high tides threaten 11 riverside communities

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has mobilized personnel to closely monitor the high-tide surge expected throughout this week (through Dec.12,), after the Hydrographic Department issued a warning that water levels in the Chao Phraya River will rise significantly, particularly between 8 am–2 pm.

Strong baht shows no signs of weakness, raising questions about Thailand’s economic reality

Despite frustration from long-term visitors, exporters, and tourism operators, the Thai baht continues to show no meaningful signs of weakening. Instead, it remains stubbornly strong, defying the country’s underlying economic conditions and adding pressure on sectors that rely on a softer currency.

Kasikorn Research Center reported last week that the baht closed at 32.02 per USD, slightly weaker than the previous day’s 31.93 but still stronger than many expected. The energy minister yesterday ordered a reduction in pump prices of 50 satang per liter for diesel and 30 satang for all kinds of petrol, effective from 5am today.

A young Belarusian model who traveled to Bangkok for a job interview on Sept. 20 was abducted and taken to a scam center in Myanmar where she was murdered and her organs sold, according to media reports.

According to these reports the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the incident involving Vera Kravtsova, 26, and is assisting the family through diplomatic channels. 54% tariff on wine imports eliminated ‘indefinitely’

Thailand is cutting alcohol taxes and tariffs in a bid to lower the cost of a night out and attract more tourists. A 54% tariff on wine imports will be “exempted indefinitely”, according to local media accounts of a Thai cabinet meeting, while excise duties on locally produced wine will be cut to 10% or below.

The measure is designed not only to expand the budding domestic industry, but also to add to supplies of less-expensive alcohol. The government had in recent years increased tariffs on wine in a bid to raise revenues. Hot weather warning issued for Thailand

The Thailand Meteorological Department has warned of hot weather throughout Thailand today, with temperatures rising to 39C in Bangkok and 40C elsewhere in the central region and the north.

It also forecasts a 20% chance of thunderstorms and advises people to take care of their health in hot weather conditions. Thunderstorms may occur in the lower northeast, central region, and east regions due to moisture-laden winds from the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea. Continued …

A national committee to devise a policy on battling the PM2.5 problem, and an agency to manage the smog are needed to address the nation’s air pollution, according to the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI).

Thais Among Top Target Of Cyber Criminals In Asia

The Bank of Thailand revealed that Thais are among cyber criminals favorite targets in Asia, and as these scammers continuously come up with new tactics it led to a total of 56,746 online fraud cases in January this year, with 3.981 billion baht being stolen.

Pinyo Tripetcharaporn, director of the central bank’s Overall Risk Management Department, said that statistics show of the total cyber fraud cases in January, 46% involved being deceived in making online purchases, followed by 10% being tricked to borrow money and 7% duped into transferring money. Transport ministry investigating 10,600+ complaints about taxis

Thailand’s Transport Ministry says it’s considering new measures to address a raft of complaints about taxis after a huge number of complaints in a 6-month period.

According to a report, the ministry has received over 10,600 complaints from taxi passengers. In response, officials say they plan to introduce measures to improve taxi services to ensure they are “convenient, safe, and reasonably priced”. Continued …

Big Bike Collision in Phuket Claims Three Lives

Yesterday, Chalong police officers received an accident report of a big bike colliding with a motorbike on Wiset Road, Mueang Phuket, claiming three lives and one serious injury.

Phuket emergency services and police officers were dispatched to the accident scene and found a blue big bike and a white motorbike overturned on the road. Nearby, two bodies of foreigners and one Thai body were on the road, whose names were publicly identified only as Mr. Kristofer, 36, Mr. Magnus, 52, and Mrs. Kanokkan, 44, respectively. Continued …

New compensation guidelines after surge in monkey attacks

A government committee has come up with new regulations for compensation to victims of monkey attacks in response to a spate of attacks by rogue monkeys in Lopburi. Under the new regulation, a maximum of 100,000 baht will be paid in case of death or disability.

The committee in charge of managing funds for wildlife protection convened a meeting on Friday and issued new compensation regulations, which went into effect on Saturday. Continued …

Monkey attacks keep Koh Chang park officials at bay

Koh Chang park officials are fed up with a growing number of macaques that pose a danger to local residents and tourists, as well as damaging property.

Neramit Songsagne, chief of Mu Koh Chang National Park, said on Sunday the park is mulling two plans to manage the marauding monkeys, either by sterilizing them to control their reproduction or moving them off the island to new sanctuaries on the mainland. The park is awaiting recommendations from a study by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation on the impact of the monkeys on the island, the official added. Continued …

First Lopburi monkeys relocating Monday to reduce attacks, injuries

The Parks department will today temporarily move the first group of Lopburi monkeys into a special enclosure at a Wildlife Rescue Center, before later moving them to a “monkey garden”, in order to control a population that has become increasingly aggressive while stealing food and attacking people, causing injury to several individuals.

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) recently warned that the manufacturing sector stands to face severe challenges now that the country’s workforce has dropped by 3 million.

Thailand grapples with surge in illegal foreign workers in tourism

The Labor Ministry of Thailand has expressed worries over the persistent issue of foreigners being unlawfully employed within the country’s tourism sector.
