Doctor Among Two Killed in Cha Am Bypass Crash

Two people were killed and a 53-year-old woman seriously injured after a car crashed into a central reservation barrier on the Cha Am-Pran Buri bypass road in Phetchaburi province yesterday morning. The metal barrier pierced through the vehicle from the front windscreen to the rear, leaving the car severely damaged.

Fuel prices fall by up to 1 baht at Thai pumps

Fuel prices at major petrol stations across Thailand fell again today. The new pump prices cover major oil retailers, including PTT Station, Bangchak, PT, Shell, and Caltex. The update comes as retail fuel prices continue to move in line with market conditions.

Most petrol and gasohol products were reduced by 70 satang per liter, while selected premium diesel products dropped by 1 baht per liter. Some diesel categories remained unchanged, depending on the retailer and product type. Continued … 

56 provinces warned of heavy rain and flood risk

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rain across 56 provinces today, with people in risk areas urged to prepare for possible flash floods and forest run-off.

Thunderstorms are forecast in 60% of the southern east coast region. Heavy rain is expected in some areas. Provinces at risk include Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Continued … 

First Lao Man Rescued From Flooded Gold Mine

A Lao worker trapped inside a gold mine cave in Laos has been rescued after a major international operation involving Thai and Finnish cave diving experts. Rescue teams successfully brought one of five survivors out of the flooded tunnel at 8:40 pm yesterday, according to the Thailand Rescue Diver Facebook page.

The worker was among seven Lao laborers trapped inside a gold mine cave in Long Chaeng, Xaysomboun province, Laos, since May 19. Heavy rain and flash flooding had swept through the mine, cutting off access and leaving the workers stranded underground. Continued …

26 million sign up for ‘Thais Help Thais’ stimulus

More than 26 million people and over one million businesses registered for Thailand’s “Thais Help Thais Plus 60/40” co-payment scheme ahead of yesterday’s registration deadline.

Deputy government spokeswoman Lalida Persvivatana said yesterday the scheme, which opened for registration on May 25, had continued to attract widespread participation from both consumers and businesses nationwide. House rejects land bridge study panel

The House of Representatives rejected a proposal to establish a special committee to further study the land bridge megaproject, with government MPs arguing that multiple reviews had already been conducted and additional scrutiny would duplicate existing work.

MPs yesterday voted 266 to 174 against setting up the committee after hours of debate over the proposed transport corridor linking the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea under the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) scheme. Continued …

Thailand’s transit trade rises as durian exports to China surge

Arada Fuangtong, director-general of the Department of Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Commerce, said border and transit trade in April was worth a combined B211.146 billion, up 27.5%.

Exports totaled B121.521 billion, up 25.4%, and imports B89.625 billion, up 30.5%, leaving Thailand with a trade surplus of B31.896 billion for the month. Continued … 

Myanmar-Thailand cargo bridge resumes border trade at Mae Sot

The Myawady-Mae Sot No. 2 Friendship Bridge, a key cargo route on the Myanmar-Thailand border, resumed trade on Thursday morning, local sources said. The bridge had been shut by the Myanmar side since the morning of August 18, 2025, because of continuing military conflict.

A Myawady border trader said the reopening was confirmed at the bridge, where Buddhist protective Parittas were being recited for safety and protection. EVs, PHEVs to reach almost a third of global new-vehicle sales in 2026

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates electric vehicle (EV) sales – including not only EVs but also plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and extended-range EVs (EREVs) – will hit 23 million this year, and account for around 28% of all new cars sold. In a report, the IEA used recent trends and sales data from the first quarter of this year, and forecast EV sales to rise from 20 million last year.

According to the IEA’s numbers, 3.9 million EVs were sold in the first three months of 2026 – down 8% from the same time last year. This is primarily due to falling sales in China, the world’s largest EV market, and the US. Continued … 

Japan passes bill to raise visa fees, introduce online pre-entry screening

Japan’s parliament yesterday passed an immigration control law revision to raise the maximum fee for residence status applications by foreigners and introduce an online pre-entry travel authorisation system for overseas arrivals. Cha Am festival set for May 8-10

The first SEA–ART–CRAFT festival will take place in Cha Am from May 8-10, bringing together music, art, food, and community products from four provinces in the lower central provinces cluster 2.

The event will be held at the Cha Am Beach viewpoint in Phetchaburi and is open to the public free of charge. A press conference was held yesterday on the beach in front of Long Beach Hotel in Cha Am to announce details of the event, which is part of the International Cultural, Artistic and Craft Project of Phetchamut-Kiri. WFFT celebrates 25 years

This May, the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) marks 25 years of rescuing, rehabilitating, and protecting wildlife in Thailand. What began as a “hobby” caring for a few primates by founder and Director Edwin Wiek has grown into one of the country’s leading wildlife rescue organizations, providing sanctuary and veterinary care to hundreds of animals each year.

Founded in 2001, just a short distance from Hua Hin, WFFT was created in response to the widespread exploitation of wildlife across Thailand – from elephants used in riding and logging, to primates and bears kept as pets, or used in entertainment. Kui Buri National Park safari vehicle fee rises to 1,200 baht

Kui Buri National Park has increased the wildlife viewing vehicle fee from 850 baht to 1,200 baht per vehicle, effective from today. The adjustment applies to the safari-style vehicles used to take visitors into the Huai Luek wildlife watching area, one of the best-known locations in Thailand for seeing wild elephants and gaurs in their natural habitat.

The park said it had been informed of the fee change by the Kui Buri Wildlife Ecotourism Club, the authorized provider of wildlife viewing vehicle services within the park. According to the club, the increase is needed because of rising operating costs, including fuel, vehicle maintenance, labor, and other related expenses. Continued … 

‘Integrated approach’ needed to curb Thai water woes

The government is preparing an integrated approach to improve the management of local water resources, with the goal of tackling floods and drought across all 22 major river basins in the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri outlined the plan yesterday at Government House ahead of a 2027 budget meeting on water management. Doctors Remove 1-meter Spear From Man’s Face in Korat

A 21-year-old man survived a serious facial injury after doctors at Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital worked with rescue workers to remove a metal spear more than one meter long embedded in his face.

The incident occurred yesterday after the victim was hit with the projectile, with it entering above his upper lip. Upon arrival at the emergency department in Nakhon Ratchasima, doctors assessed his condition and requested assistance from the Hook 31 rescue foundation, which brought a plasma cutting tool to remove the exposed section of the metal spear. Trump signals Iran blockade could last months as costs of war surge

President Donald Trump said the U.S. is currently in “what some people would call” a war with Iran, a new distinction from the president one day before the Trump administration prepares to cross the 60-day threshold to receive congressional approval for the war or withdraw troops from Iran.

Middle East conflict hits Thailand as factories shut and layoffs rise

Thailand’s economy is beginning to feel the full force of prolonged conflict in the Middle East, with rising energy costs, weakening demand, and global uncertainty combining to pressure businesses across multiple sectors.

The crisis, now stretching beyond two months since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, has disrupted global markets and pushed oil prices higher. The situation has been further exacerbated by the closure of key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery through which around 20%–25% of the world’s crude oil supply, or roughly 20–21 million barrels per day, passes. PTT Oil and Retail Business Public Co. (OR) and Bangchak Corp. announced a 60 satang-per-liter increase for diesel B7 and diesel B20. Premium diesel prices were unchanged.

Finance Ministry to seek 400-billion-baht loan decree as Middle East risks mount

Thailand is moving to build a new fiscal buffer against rising global risks, with the Finance Ministry preparing to submit a draft emergency borrowing decree worth up to 400 billion baht to Cabinet on May 5.

The proposed decree is intended to give the government additional funding capacity to cushion the economy from the impact of fighting in the Middle East, while also supporting the Thai Helps Thai Plus program, a major cost-of-living and purchasing-power stimulus package expected to begin in June. Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn met Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, president of the Airlines Association of Thailand, Bangkok Airways executives, and executives from Thai AirAsia, Thai VietJet Air, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air, to hear and discuss the impact on flight operating costs from the conflict in the Middle East.

Iran war also threatens Asia’s food security

As planting season dawned across Southeast Asia’s rice fields, Suchart Piamsomboon, a 60-year-old farmer from Thailand’s Chachoengsao province, went to the local shop for fertilizers. But the fertiliser had not arrived.

He was told, it might not arrive. Even if it did, it would cost over 1,100 baht a sack – a jump from the 800-900 baht it cost just over a month ago. By the time Piamsomboon got home, word was already circulating that prices could even hit 1,200 baht. Continued …

Thailand is marking Labor Day today, a date that underscores the importance of workers’ rights while also highlighting a long-standing distinction between private-sector employees and civil servants.

For most employees in the private sector, Labor Day is recognized as a statutory holiday under labor protection laws. Hawkish Fed remarks push down baht

The baht is expected to weaken further, possibly testing 33.5 to the US dollar in the near term after the US Federal Reserve caused the dollar to rise by signaling that policy easing is unlikely this year, says Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research).

Fitch has dour view for Thai banks

Fitch Ratings expects the sector outlook for Thai banks to deteriorate this year, despite solid earnings in the first quarter at the six domestic systemically important banks (D-SIBs).

Profitability remains sound, but thinner net interest margins (NIMs), weaker economic prospects, and pressure on borrower repayment capacity are likely to weigh on earnings and asset quality over the rest of the year, noted Fitch. Continued … 

External risks linger as manufacturing index increases

Thailand’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) edged up 0.75% year-on-year to 108.69 points in March amid tensions in the Middle East affecting some industries and discouraging purchases of oil-powered cars, according to the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

Hua Hin Will Bring Thai Fine Dining To Southeast Portland

A new restaurant in Portland, Maine, in the space that was recently home to Phaya Thai Express, is now called: “Hua Hin”. The owner, Ize Piyanut (Sampaotong), grew up in Hua Hin.

(Editor: Khao Tom restaurant is located just south of Soi 51 on the gulf side of Phetchkasem Road and is a favorite for bus tour groups. While its prices are a little above average, the menu is extensive and the food fresh and tasty. Look for the red chairs in the open-air environment. Video of Hua Hin restaurant?)

He was born and raised in Hua Hin and learned to cook from his mother, and brings that influence with him to the restaurant. Loaded fuel tanker flips in Hua Hin after driver dozes off

A tanker truck carrying 16,000 liters of fuel flipped on its side in Hua Hin district after the driver admitted falling asleep while he was behind the wheel.

Police said yesterday they were alerted by the 191 emergency radio network on Monday that the tanker had overturned in the southbound lane of the Hua Hin bypass road, sending some petrol spilling onto the road surface. Workers from other agencies and rescue volunteers also rushed to the location and sprayed water to prevent the fuel igniting. Continued …

Songkran 2026 has brought a stronger-than-expected tourism surge across Thailand, with both Thai and foreign visitors turning out in large numbers nationwide in a sign that the traditional new year celebration is continuing to grow into a festival with global appeal.

51 Deaths on 4th Dangerous Day

The Road Safety Operation Center reported 51 deaths and 224 injuries from 237 road accidents on Monday, marking the fourth day of the Songkran holiday safety campaign. Cumulative figures from April 10-13 show 755 accidents, 705 injuries, and 154 deaths nationwide.

Government orders nationwide forest lockdown to fight wildfires and PM2.5

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin yesterday said the ministry was acting in line with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s policy to intensify wildfire prevention and haze control, with the key objective of stopping fires from the very start.

He said the Royal Forest Department and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation had been instructed to close reserved forests and protected forest areas in risk-prone zones across the country. The Center for Air Pollution Mitigation reported yesterday that PM2.5 levels had exceeded the standard in 39 provinces nationwide, with northern Thailand in a critical condition.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a severe weather alert for summer storms expected in upper Thailand from April 16 to 18. The forecast includes thunderstorms, strong winds, isolated hail, and possible lightning.

Cranky cat unfairly blamed for train’s 7-hour delay

A cat that was not enjoying the ride has become the object of some online criticism after a southbound train arrived at its final destination seven hours behind schedule. Rapid Train No.169 arrived at the Yala station in southern Thailand at 6.15 pm on Monday, seven hours late, after an eventful journey from Bangkok that included the animal misbehavior.

According to a passenger, the train had to stop in the middle of the journey to help the owner of the cat catch the pet. The cat was believed to have been irritated by scorching weather conditions and started biting the owner and scratching other passengers, the pssenger said. Continued …

The United States and Iran may return to negotiations as early as this week after talks over the weekend failed to produce any breakthrough, with tensions rising further following Washington’s move to blockade Iranian ports. A prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could result in a global food “catastrophe”, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned, as shipments of critical agricultural inputs remain blocked in the key waterway due to the US-Israel war on Iran.

Food prices have not risen yet because existing stocks are absorbing the shock, the United Nations body’s chief economist, Maximo Torero, said Monday. Thai airlines trim routes as fuel crisis drives costs sharply higher

Thai airlines are coming under growing pressure from the Middle East conflict, with soaring Jet A-1 prices pushing up operating costs, lifting air fares, and prompting some carriers to temporarily suspend selected routes. Bangkok Airways has already raised some domestic fares by around 15%-20% from April 1, saying higher fuel costs have lifted its expenses by about 20%.

Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, president of Bangkok Airways, said the carrier had hedged about 30% of its fuel costs at US$80-90 a barrel, but that this was no longer enough after jet fuel prices climbed to around US$170-180 a barrel. Somkiat Phengkaew and his wife, former civil servants, used their free time after retirement to transform their backyard, approximately 300 square meters, in Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat district, into an experimental grape farm, cultivating eight varieties of grapes.

Kalasin hospital boast 100% cancer surgery success rate

A district hospital in northeastern Thailand has reported a 100% success rate in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer after screening more than 1,200 people over the past three years.

Yang Talat Hospital in Kalasin said it had carried out free colonoscopy screenings on 1,222 people since the 2023 fiscal year, detecting 19 cases of colorectal cancer. The first phase of the Thai–Chinese high-speed rail project has reached 51.7% completion, according to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). TActing SRT Gov. Anan Phonimdaeng said progress is continuing across multiple contracts.

Phase 1 links Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima and carries a total investment value of 179.41 billion baht. The phase consists of 14 construction contracts and one train system contract. 8-point policy to transform Hua Hin into a more liveable city

Hua Hin Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul has unveiled an eight-point policy aimed at improving quality of life for residents and guiding the city’s development over the next four years.

Plans include improving roads, replacing existing street lighting with energy-efficient LED systems, and upgrading the municipal waterworks system with new filtration and sedimentation facilities. Waste-to Energy-Power Plant Project in Surat Thani province

Sermsang Power Corp. (SSP) has partnered with BAFS Clean Energy Co. and Luckly Clean Energy Co. to establish a joint-venture company named Beisel Waste Energy Co. The company aims to invest in developing Waste to an energy power plant project in Surat Thani province with a budget of over 2,200 million baht. The project will sell 8.9 MW of generated electricity to the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) and is expected to start its operation within two years.

The project will use high-efficiency technology to sort municipal solid waste in Surat Thani province and feed it as fuel into a moving grate incinerator controled by a hydraulic system. The plant will be installed with a flue gas-treatment system, a continuous emission monitoring system (CEMSs) and a wastewater treatment system.

The project can process 500 tons of waste into energy in a day (or 165,000 tons per year). Currently, the company has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the PEA and expects to be able to start commercial operation (COD) by 2026. – exri.co.th

Six Thai nationals have been arrested in Hua Hin on charges of operating a website for a major gambling network, with more than 8 million baht in circulation over the past eight months.

Police officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) on Saturday launched the “Operation Hua Hin Strike” across three locations in the beach resort town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province and arrested administrators of the website connected to the LAVAMAX1688 gambling network, which has over 1,000 members. 2 Women Saved After Being Swept Away by Strong Currents in Nakhon Si Thammarat

In a tense and dramatic operation yesterday, rescue teams successfully saved two women who could not swim and were swept away by strong flood currents in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The victims managed to cling to an electricity pole, preventing a potential tragedy. Rescue teams from the Mittraphap Samakkhi Foundation in Hat Yai, along with the Tai Tek Tung rescue unit, deployed a boat to reach the victims. Energy demand seen rising in final quarter

The Transport Ministry will prioritize investments in rail transport systems to improve passenger travel and freight logistics, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said on Monday. The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) announced that the onset of this year’s cool season is likely to be delayed by approximately two weeks, and will be warmer than usual. The shift has been attributed to unpredictable weather patterns and the influence of the El Niño phenomenon.

Study shows digital wallet scheme will boost GDP with minimal impact on public debt

Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

According to an announcement made in September covering additional amendments to reducing the value-added tax (VAT) rate as per Article 80 of the Revenue Code, Thailand’s VAT rate was reduced to 6.3% on the sale of goods, provision of services, or imports, effective Oct. 1, 2017, until Sept. 30, 2024.

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production.
