Five Injured in Bus-Truck Collision in Pran Buri

A traffic collision involving a tour bus and a Isuzu four-wheeled truck occurred on yesterday afternoon, leaving five people injured. The crash took place at kilometer marker 237+500 in Pran Buri district, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

According to the Prachuap Khiri Khan Highway Police Rescue Radio Center, the bus collided with the truck around 13:55. None of the 20, bus passengers sustained any injuries, but the passengers in the truck, carrying banquet supplies, were less fortunate. Continued …

Stormy weather forecast

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning for potential severe weather conditions affecting 28 provinces, with the southern region facing heavy to very heavy rainfall that could lead to flash floods and forest runoff. Meanwhile, cooler temperatures are expected in northern Thailand.

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms are expected in 70% of the area, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas, including Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range from 22 to 24°C to 29 to 33°C, with northeast winds at 15 to 35 kilometers per hour and wave heights of 1 to 2 meters. Continued …

Thai woman walks as Erawan Shrine case crumbles

A Thai court sent shockwaves throughout the capital of Bangkok after clearing Thai woman Wanna Suansan of charges related to the devastating 2015 Erawan Shrine bombing that claimed 20 lives and injured 120 others.

Wanna, a Thai national, was acquitted by Bangkok’s Southern Criminal Court yesterday. The attack, which occurred in the heart of Bangkok, resulted in 20 fatalities and left 120 injured, primarily affecting Chinese tourists visiting the popular spiritual site. Continued …

Chachoengsao courier delivers 6-foot mattress on motorcycle – video

A delivery rider found himself in a humorous predicament when tasked with transporting a 6-foot mattress on his motorcycle. The unexpected delivery, which took place Wednesday, in Chachoengsao province, left the customer so impressed by the courier’s determination that he tipped the rider several hundred baht.

Baht slumps after US election

The Thai baht reached a two-month low on Thursday, with projections it might dip below 34.5 to the U.S. dollar shortly. This currency pressure follows predictions that the Federal Reserve will maintain higher interest rates longer than anticipated after Donald Trump clinched victory in the recent U.S. election.

According to the Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research), the baht was quoted at 34.34-36 against the dollar, dropping from the prior day’s rate of 34.17. A declining yuan has further weighed down the baht. This trend is mirrored in other currencies like the yen, all suffering due to the dollar’s surge post-election. Continued …

Transport minister plans road safety campaign for motorcyclists

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has announced a plan aimed at promoting road safety, particularly targeting motorcyclists and their passengers who fail to wear crash helmets.

Ultra-luxury houses boom amid slumping property market

Luxury houses priced at more than 100 million baht per unit have enjoyed over 450 billion baht in sales in the past 10 years, with some 394 new units being supplied to the market since 2015, property consultancy firm Colliers International reported on Wednesday.

While the rest of Thailand’s property market is contracting due to the high rejection rate of housing loans by financial institutions, buyers of ultra-luxury houses often pay in cash and therefore do not have to apply for loans, Collier’s research director Phattarachai Taweewong explained. Chinese EV-makers offer discounts to boost their year-end sales

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are offering new models and up to 100,000 baht discounts in a bid to stimulate sales in the remainder of this year, according to a report on Thursday.

PKK’s Klong Wan: The Hidden Gem Town You’ve Never Heard Of

If you’d asked me three years ago about Klong Wan, Thailand, I wouldn’t have known what to say. I wouldn’t even have been able to find it on a map. But after a three-month stay in Thailand a few years ago, I found myself holed up in Klong Wan for a deliciously unexpected 10 days of bliss.

Klong Wan is a remote village on the Gulf of Thailand in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. EGAT aims to turn hydropower dams into giant ‘batteries’

Three more hydropower dams operated by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) will be developed into giant “batteries” under a 90-billion-baht investment to supply clean power to the country, easing concerns about insufficient electricity generated by solar and wind power.

Singapore’s Changi Airport to hike fees to fund upgrades

Changi Airport in Singapore will charge passengers and airlines more to fly in and out of the city-state to help finance a S$2.3-billion (US1.75 billion) upgrade of its terminals. Thailand’s Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax

Tax expert Thomas Carden has advised expatriates residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in 2024 to obtain a tax identification number from the Thai Revenue Department (TRD). Carden emphasized the need for expatriates to register and submit tax forms by the first quarter of 2025, even if they believe they owe no tax.

Carden clarified that only overseas income transferred to Thailand is relevant for taxation. Issues like pre-taxed pensions and double taxation treaties should also be considered. Continued …

Ministry to ease blow of fuel subsidy ending

The Energy Ministry is planning to launch measures to soften the impact of expiring biofuel price subsidies in 2027, as the fuels become more expensive, affecting palm and sugar cane growers.

Gold prices showed significant movement yesterday, with the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) announcing five adjustments resulting in a notable increase. Gold ornaments are selling at 44,550 baht per baht weight. This surge of 400 baht is compared to yesterday’s closing price.

In the latest update posted yesterday, domestic gold bars were being bought at 43,950 baht per baht weight and sold at 44,050 baht, according to the association’s fifth announcement of the day. Record Loy Krathong spending won’t offset economic problems

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that while spending during the Loy Krathong festival is expected to exceed 10 billion baht, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the economy.

Thanawat Polvichai, president of the UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, told the press on Wednesday that though spending during the festival is expected to hit a nine-year high, the underlying economic conditions will remain challenging. Continued …

A day at Khao Kheow Zoo

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

Get ready for a dramatic weather shift as northern and northeastern Thailand is set to feel a temperature dip over the next 24 hours, while the southern regions, including Bangkok, face heavy rainfall and possible flooding.

The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned that a monsoon trough will pass through the southern region, bringing moderate to heavy rains to the Gulf of Thailand and the southern provinces. LNG prices to keep power bills stable

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices are likely to stay unchanged in early 2025, putting less pressure on the authorities preparing to calculate a new power tariff for electricity bills between January and April next year, says the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

In an incident that unfolded near Pattaya Beach yesterday, police were called to break up a brawl between two groups of foreign nationals. Inflation up in Octpber, below forecast

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.83% in October from a year earlier, the Commerce Ministry said today, remaining below the Bank of Thailand’s target range for inflation of 1% to 3%.

The figure compared with a forecast increase of 0.94% in a Reuters poll, and an annual inflation rate of 0.61% in September. The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up 0.77% on the year, versus a forecast rise of 0.79%. Continued …

No matter how the United States presidential election turns out, a new round of the U.S.-China trade war is almost inevitable, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said on Tuesday, urging Thai businesses to prepare for the impact, namely the shifting of manufacturing and export bases.

Thailand welcomes 29 million tourists, expects more as high season kicks in

Thailand has welcomed more than 29.08 million foreign tourists, generating approximately 1.358 trillion baht in revenue from Jan. 1 to Nov. 3 this year.

According to statistics from the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Chinese tourists topped the list of arrivals with over 5.75 million, followed by tourists from Malaysia (4.18 million), India (1.72 million), South Korea (1.53 million), and Russia (1.3 million) during the period. Continued …

Domestic tourists up 9% YOY, but likely to miss Bt1-trillion revenue goal

The number of domestic travelers in the first nine months of this year crossed 148.02 million person-trips, increasing 8.98% year on year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported on Tuesday. These travelers have generated income to local tourism businesses at around 702.52 billion baht, increasing 12.6% compared with the same period of the previous year, it said.

TAT estimated that total domestic tourists this year could exceed 200 million person-trips, and could even reach 230 million, said Nithee Seeprae, deputy governor for marketing communications. Continued …

Samui to welcome more cruise ships

Twenty-four cruise ships are scheduled to visit Koh Samui in Surat Thani in the current high season, helping the southern province rise two places in the top 10 list of most-visited Thai destinations, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

The island on Tuesday morning welcomed 2,830 international visitors on the Celebrity Solstice at Nathon pier in tambon Ang Thong. Thai police raided a Chinese-owned recycling plant in Prachinburi province on Monday, seizing over 41.5 tons of hazardous waste, officials said.

Authorities yesterday discovered the body of a tuskless adult male wild elephant, known as a “Si Dor,” in the Nam Rin stream in Ban Song Khon, Pla Ba subdistrict, Phu Ruea district. Thai Rice Exports Surge 22% in First 9 Months

Thailand exported 7,448,941 tons of rice worth 172.019 billion baht in the first nine months of 2024 (January-September), an increase of 22% in volume and 45.8% in value compared to the same period in 2023, according to Charoen Laothamatas, president of the Rice Exporters Association of Thailand.

Thailand’s Winter Expected to Start Oct 29, Colder Than Last Year

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has announced that the 2024 winter season is set to begin on Oct. 29 and is expected to last until late February 2025. This season is anticipated to be colder than last year, with December 2024 to January 2025 marking the coldest period.

According to Dr. Sukanyaniyawinyacharn, acting director-general of the Meteorological Department, the onset of winter is assessed by three factors: a consistent drop in temperatures below 23°C across northern Thailand, a shift to northeast and east winds at lower altitudes, and a gradual decrease in rainfall. Retirement age to go up to 65

The Labor Ministry plans to raise the retirement age for both private and government sectors to 65 years, the same as in Singapore and Switzerland, said Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. Bangkok is set to experience increased pollution levels over the weekend as PM2.5 particles hang heavy in the air, exacerbated by cool weather and poor circulation, according to the Pollution Control Department. The playful and pudgy mammal that went viral from its Thai zoo enclosure has a sad story to tell about her fellows hippos. Moo Deng is the two-month-old pygmy hippo who flicks her ears in joy and likes splashing in water. She lives the life of a superstar at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, where huge crowds have massed – but the chances of spotting her relatives in the wild are slim.

Pygmy hippos (Choeropsis liberiensis) are endangered and estimated to number fewer than 2,500. Their decline has been drastic: a long-term survey in a national park in Ivory Coast found 12,000 pygmy hippos in 1982; 5,000 in 1997 and 2,000 in 2011. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning today, highlighting heavy rain in 24 provinces and urging vigilance regarding the powerful tropical storm Trami. Northern Thailand will experience cool weather and strong winds, while the southern seas will see high waves.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 40% of the area will experience thunderstorms, particularly in the provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. Cambodian-Thai trade up 10%, tops US$3 billion Jan-Sept

Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand continues as usual, reaching over US$3.1 billion in the first nine months of the year, an increase of more than 10% over the same period in 2023. Thailand is Cambodia’s fourth-largest trading partner, after China, the U.S. and Vietnam, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).

GDCE statistics show that from January to September, total trade between Cambodia and Thailand amounted to $3.169 billion, up 12.4% from the same period in 2023. Continued …

IMF forecasts 3.2% global growth for 2024-25, with Thailand trailing ASEAN

The global war against inflation has largely been won — and at surprisingly little cost to economic growth, the International Monetary Fund declared Tuesday.

In its latest assessment of the global economy, the IMF predicted that worldwide inflation will cool from 6.7% last year to 5.8% this year and to 4.3% in 2025. It estimates that inflation will fall even faster in the world’s wealthy countries, from 4.6% last year to 2.6% this year and 2% — the target range for most major central banks — in 2025. Thailand is gearing up to impose a 300-baht tourism tax, initially targeting air travel, possibly starting within the next six months.

Tweaks needed for northern Thailand tourism project

The new co-payment tourism promotion program for northern destinations in Thailand will need an upgrade in terms of both the amount of subsidies from the government and number of tourists to receive them, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Wednesday.

The total budget for this program, Aeo Nuea Khon La Khrueng (travel to the north at half prices), will unlikely reach 24 billion baht as in the past program because the new one will be split into five phases for continuous economic stimulus effects, he said. Continued … 

Thai visitor arrivals stats prove link between tourism and peace

Thailand has reported 26.08 million arrivals in the nine-month Jan.-Sept. 2024 period, up 30.09% over the same period of 2023. A deeper analysis shows how the country is benefiting from both internal peace and external conflicts as it seeks to safeguard the role of tourism as an economic mainstay in the second year of post-Covid recovery.

It had been earlier hoped, although not targeted, that arrivals would hit the 40 million mark of pre-Covid 2019. That expectation has now been tempered to 35-37 million in view of the extremely fragile and flammable global scenario and the impact of the upcoming electronic travel authorization requirement. The amended contract for the high-speed rail project linking three airports is now in the final phase and will be presented to the cabinet for approval next Tuesday (October 29), the Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) said.

In a major crackdown on human trafficking, police from the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division raided two bars in Hua Hin on charges of covertly offering underage prostitution services to foreign tourists. The Department of Rural Roads under the Thai Ministry of Transport has completed the first of the four phases of the 950km coastal road (Riviera) project, which spans 12 provinces from Samut Prakan to Narathiwat.

New stimulus efforts readied

The Finance Ministry is preparing additional stimulus measures, including plans to promote tourism and encourage spending toward the end of the year, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

Calls are growing for better protection of elephants at sanctuaries and tourist attractions across Thailand after two of the animals perished in Chiang Mai’s raging floodwaters this month.

Two Thai women were arrested for creating fake Facebook pages to scam tourists out of deposits for luxury resort bookings in Pattaya. The suspects were arrested by Tourist Police at their residences in Chonburi and Samut Prakan provinces. Both face charges of “fraud by entering false information into a computer system”.
