WFFT Sanctuary Welcomes New Arrival: the World’s Rarest Otter

Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) has welcomed a new arrival, a species of otter so rare that it was once believed to be extinct.

The Hairy-nosed otter is known by experts as the ‘miracle’ otter, having been declared extinct in 1998 before camera traps later provided evidence of the species still roaming in parts of Southeast Asia. Continued …

Electricity tariffs: Potential 6 baht/unit increase expected next year

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed three options for determining electricity tariffs for the first quarter of next year. The electricity tariffs could potentially increase to a peak of 6 baht per unit. The ERC disclosed that if there are proposals lower than these three options, it would have to reconvene for further discussions today.

Komkrit Tantravanich, secretary-general of the Energy Regulatory Commission, stated that the ERC approved the calculation of the estimated automatic tariff adjustment (FTA) for the quarter of January to April. Continued …

AIS-3BB internet merger approved

The board of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) voted on Friday evening to approve the takeover of the broadband internet service provider Triple T Broadband (TTTBB) by Advanced Info Service (AIS).

After the acquisition is completed, AIS would become the biggest player in the fixed broadband market with 4.69 million users, exceeding the 3.8 million of the current market leader True. State-owned National Telecom is the only other major provider. Continued … 

Thundershowers forecast for most parts of Thailand

Isolated thundershowers are forecast for the lower northeast, the east, the lower central and south regions of Thailand today, while isolated heavy rains are likely in the south.

The Thailand Meteorological Department said these conditions were brought by the moderate high-pressure system over upper Vietnam and the South China Sea, which is expected to reach the upper northeast of Thailand today, as well as the easterly winds prevailing over the east, the lower central and the south. Air Pollution Soars Across Most Of Bangkok

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said yesterday satellite data appearing on its “Dust Check” application showed that dangerous particles in the air known as PM 2.5 had soared in 48 of 50 Bangkok districts and exceeded the red code, which is 90 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in 34 of them.

According to Thailand’s color-coded air-pollution-warning system, green means moderate or no risk at all; yellow means the air is unhealthy for those suffering from respiratory illnesses, with children and the elderly urged to limit time spent outdoors; orange means it’s unhealthy for all; and red means hazardous. Barbeque and grilled pork over-consumption may lead to colon cancer

A warning has been issued to fans of barbeque and tabletop grilled pork to limit their consumption to no more than once a month. Additionally, they are advised to always consume organic vegetables.

This caution comes from Associate Professor Dr. Surat Tanprawate, a neurologist, who posted the warning on his page, Brain with Dr Surat, on Friday. Massive Seizure of E-cigarettes in Ayutthaya

Thai Anti-Trafficking In Persons (ATP) officers confiscated E-cigarettes, E-liquids, and other equipment, a total of 60,500 units worth over 10 million Baht, at a private distribution center in Bang Pa-in, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.

According to the report from the ATP officers, an anonymous source reported to the police that there was a contraband smuggling operation involving e-cigarettes, e-liquids, and other equipment from abroad to a private distribution center. Continued …

A young man was taken aback when he was charged 300 baht for a plate of stir-fried noodles at a restaurant in Don Mueang. The restaurant justified the cost by stating they used three packets of instant noodles, each costing 12 baht.

The customer questioned the hefty price, insisting that each packet of noodles cost only 5 baht. The restaurant replied, stating that each packet costs them 12 baht. Grab delivers first-ever profit

Grab Holdings Ltd. posted its first-ever profit on adjusted basis, a milestone for the decade-old Southeast Asian ride-hailing and food delivery company trying to convince investors of its earnings potential.

The shares rose 3.1% in New York trading, the most since Aug. 23, after Grab said adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization reached US$29 million in the quarter through September. Analysts expected US$9.5 million on average. Continued …

Thailand aims to become a world festival destination

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced his government’s intention to promote Thailand as a global festival destination, in the hopes of boosting tourism across the country and attracting more foreign tourists over the New Year period.

Srettha announced that Thailand will host two major events, namely the “Thailand Winter Festival”, which consists of 3,000 festivals and local events across the country, and the “Colorful Bangkok Winter Festival 2023”, which includes 200 festivals and events in the capital. Van Overturns In Chiang Mai, Killing 2 Foreigners, Injuring 10

Yesterday, a tourist van traveling from Chiang Mai to Pai overturned on the Chiang Mai-Pai route, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, where they found two foreign tourists dead outside the vehicle.

Alcohol Sales Will Be Allowed During Extended Entertainment Hours

Anutin Charnvirakul, the deputy prime minister, clarified about the extension of opening service hours of entertainment districts to 4am in four pilot provinces.

Anutin apologized for misleading information from the previous statement that the extended-hour services will not cover alcohol sales until 4 am, which is incorrect. He meant to mention service establishments that are similar to entertainment venues that could provide alcoholic beverages until midnight, such as late-night restaurants, karaoke, and similar businesses. Thai baht hits new low against US dollar amid gold price drop

The 2023 financial year has seen the Thai baht rank as one of the region’s poorest performing currencies, depreciating to a low of 37.14 to the U.S. dollar on Tuesday – a level not seen since November of the previous year.

The recent plummet in gold prices, with a decline of around 5%, or US$7.45 (274.65 baht), per ounce, has prompted increased demand for dollars for gold purchases, further weakening the Thai currency. Continued …

Inflation up only 0.3%

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.3% in September from a year earlier, slowing from a 0.88% year-on-year increase in the previous month, the Commerce Ministry said today.

Are economic danger signals flashing for both Thailand and the world?

On Tuesday, PM Srettha Thavisin pointed to the declining baht, saying that the Bank of Thailand was monitoring the situation and that it would help boost Thai exports and tourism. The baht has fallen 7% this year but is still higher than the rates set in October 2022 with Bangkok analysts suggesting that although it may fall to ฿37.55 to the dollar in the weeks ahead, but then recover with the high season for foreign tourism, to anywhere between ฿35 and ฿36 by the end of 2023.

However, could this year be different? In the last week alone, Thailand’s 10-year bond yields have risen 4.57% amid a similar surge in the United States, as markets have become wary of risk. This will make the government’s contentious expansionary stimulus plans for the economy more expensive in a darkening economic environment, with an implosion of the Chinese economy and market skepticism about Pheu Thai’s expansionary policies at a time when world economic danger signals are flashing. Suspected killer’s third wife arrested on murder charges relating to 4 infant boys

The third wife of the suspected serial killer, 46-year-old Songsak Songsaeng, was arrested by police on Friday on charges including murder. She appeared before the Criminal Court on Saturday in connection with the deaths of four infants between 2013 and 2018.

Jessada Meepian is the 33-year-old mother of a 12-year-old girl, Wiyada, the only surviving child out of five from the relationship between the pair who, it was revealed, on Friday, alerted authorities and activists to the murder of a two-year-old girl at the hands of Songsak and his fourth wife Sunan Nahuanin, the mother of the baby girl. Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) officers raided the home of Royal Thai Police (RTP) Deputy Commissioner Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn this morning over allegations of his involvement in an online gambling operation. M&T Computer moving, Hua Hin Mall closing

Expat News has learned that Hua Hin Mall, located just north of the municipal office on Phetkasem Road, will be closing by December. Intown residents are most familiar with the grocery store, which generally has lower prices than Makro, or with the computer repair shop.

Many of the tenants have already moved out, with M&T Computer planning to relocate by Oct. 1 across from the Malee shopping center at 5/233 Soi Village, Khlong Chonprathan Road. M&T is where many people go for computer repairs and equipment. They can be reached at 089-174-0589 or 094-985-9947.

No word yet on where, of if, the grocery or the other stores at the mall will relocate.

New “electrical” blue tarantula species found in Thailand

Entomologists in Thailand have been stunned by an electrifying new species of tarantula found in the southern part of the country.

The spider, known as the Chilobrachys natanicharum, has a “blue-violet hue resembling the color of electrical sparks,” researchers from the Entomology Museum at Khon Kaen University and the Natural History Museum of the National Science Museum said in a paper announcing the find. Mrigadayavan Palace 3-day reopening Oct 13-15

The historic Mrigadayavan Palace in Cha Am will temporarily reopen to the public for three days Oct. 13-15. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024

The can be viewed Oct. 13 from 1:30-4:30 pm, and on Oct. 14-15 from 9am-4:30 pm.

Admission fees are as follows:

The Navy yesterday confirmed it is going ahead with its project to retrieve a sunken corvette from the Gulf of Thailand sea floor, while categorically dismissing allegations of non-transparency over it.

Navy spokesman Adm. Pokkhrong Monthatpalin said the Navy Fleet based at Sattahip will certainly have the sunken HTMS 442 Sukhothai retrieved by a private firm from the bottom of the sea off Prachuap Khiri Khan, though six bidders had earlier failed to meet specifications under the 200-million-baht project’s terms of reference. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin set up a committee on Tuesday to oversee the implementation of his government’s much-publicized 10,000 baht digital wallet scheme. The committee will be chaired by the premier himself in his capacity as finance minister, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said.

Can I drink tap water in Hua Hin?

The tap water source for Hua Hin comes from the Pranburi Dam and Phetburi Dam. The water from the dams is treated at water-treatment plants before it is pumped into the tap water distribution system.

Another media bites the dust

The Royal Coast Review, started by a former editor of Hua Hin Today several years ago, has gone on what its founder calls a “sabbatical.”

According to the publication, “The personal circumstances of the Royal Coast Review founder and managing editor has lead to a decision to take an extended sabbatical away from Thailand and the suspension of the publication of the Royal Coast Review website.”

RCR was started as competition for Hua Hin Today, but recently changed its focus to only report on the local nightlife scene.

Media history suggests that a publication taking a leave such as this rarely makes a comeback.

Retail LPG to remain at same price

The retail price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is expected to be maintained at 25.87 baht per kilogram, or 432 baht per standard 15-kg cylinder, for another month, according to the Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO).

Wisak Watanasap, director of the OFFO, said the fund’s board met on Tuesday and passed a resolution to cap the LPG retail price until Sept. 30, extending it from the expiration date of Aug. 31. Continued … 

Elite Card price to be increased by 50%

Thailand Elite Card is preparing to raise its minimum membership price by 50% to 900,000 baht, from 600,000 baht, as the company attempts to ramp up annual revenue to 8 billion baht, according to Thailand Privilege Card Co. (TPC), the operator of the card.

The four new types of card will also remove the word “Elite” from their title, which has been used since the scheme’s establishment under the Thaksin Shinawatra government in 2003. Continued …

New Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said he expects his Cabinet to announce cuts to the price of diesel and electricity right after its first meeting.

Thailand’s per capita income falls

Per capita income for this year has taken a hit after the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) revised the gross domestic product (GDP) projection from the initial estimate of 2.7%-3.7% to 2.5%-3%.

This decline is attributed to the second-quarter economic figures for 2023, which fell short of expectations due to a mere 1.8% expansion compared to the 2.6% achieved in the first quarter. The decrease in exports over the course of three consecutive quarters since the fourth quarter of 2022, with a negative growth of 5.7%, is the primary cause. Continued …

Existential threat to marine life as oceans impacted by global warming

Marine life is facing a serious threat, as global warming is leading to oceans absorbing excessive carbon, as well as contamination caused by human waste. Ratnavali Poosawat, a specialist on ecology at the Department of Fisheries, said: “The oceans absorb approximately 90% of the Earth’s heat energy. As global temperatures rise, coupled with the absorption of around 30% of emitted carbon dioxide, this results in a decrease in oxygen levels in the water, leading to the condition known as ‘ocean acidification’.” Continued …
