Tour De Thailand 2024 January 8-15, starts/ends in Hua Hin

The Tour de Thailand 2024 will take place from the Jan. 8-15. The tour includes a trip down to Chumphon and ends in Hua Hin for a total of 783 km spread over the eight days.

190 Killed In New Year Holiday Road Accidents So Far

With four days of New Year holidays having now passed, as many as 190 people have been killed in 1,570 accidents nationwide, while 1,574 were injured, and it was Kanchanaburi where the highest number of accidents occurred, while Bangkok recorded the most fatalities.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Director-General Dr. Thongchai Keeratihatthayakorn said there were 419 accidents, 422 injuries and 62 deaths yesterday, the first day of the New Year. Continued …

Academic researchers oppose a Cabinet plan to exempt alcohol from excise taxes in order to stimulate the economy, and particularly tourism.

The proposed exemption, discussed by the Thai cabinet this week as part of an economic stimulus package, would prove ineffective at increasing tourism, according to researchers at the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) including Dr. Narit Pisalyabutr. Continued …

Covid-19 cases reach nearly 6,000 a day

The number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand has been on the rise in recent weeks, reaching nearly 6,000 cases per day on Jan. 2, the highest reported caseload since August 2023.

According to a Facebook post by Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine Associate Professor Thira Woratanarat, the increase in cases is due to the spread of the Omicron subvariant BA.2.86.xBA.5, which is more transmissible than previous variants. Continued …

Bus company ditches natural gas-powered vehicles for electric

The entire fleet of 350 natural gas-fueled vehicles (NGV) buses operated by Thai Smile Bus (TSB) company will be decommissioned by the end of the month as part of the firm’s policy to promote clean air and environmental sustainability.

Yesterday, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, the Thai minister of tourism and sports, publicly revealed statistics of foreign tourists visiting Thailand in 2023, with more than 28 million individuals, generating income of over 1.2 trillion baht.
