The writing in a proposed new law is very clear about the future of recreational cannabis use in Thailand. Certainly, after Minister of Public Health Cholnan Srikaew on Sunday unveiled his new draft legislation, the future of marijuana or pot outlets that have become ubiquitous in Thailand, are now verily in doubt.

German President to Visit Thailand This Month

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is set to lead a government delegation on a three-day visit to Thailand starting Jan. 24, marking the first state visit by a German president to the country since Johannes Rau’s trip in 2002. Steinmeier, who has been in office since March 2017, will be joined by his wife, Elke Buedenbender.

The visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, aims to strengthen bilateral relations between Thailand and Germany. New tax era in Thailand begins

Thailand is moving toward greater integration with the international tax framework to stamp out tax avoidance and evasion. Significantly, it comes with the Revenue Department reporting a surge in income in the first few months of the fiscal year, which will also see foreign residents more closely scrutinized for tax.

Thailand’s Revenue Department is to share tax information with 138 countries worldwide as part of the new OECD framework agreed in July 2023. At the same time, the Sept. 15 order, which altered the income tax status of all foreign residents after 35 years, is also now in effect. Continued …

Excise considers new green tax measures

The Excise Department plans to implement four tax measures for the environment and society this year, says Director-general Ekniti Nitithanprapas.

The four measures comprise supporting the use of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), including batteries used in other industries such as solar cells; proposing a carbon tax on the energy, transport and industrial sectors; supporting the use of pure ethanol in the production of bioplastics; and supporting the use of certain cars to assist the elderly or disabled. Thai national parks report record revenues and visitors in 2023

The Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation disclosed the rankings of the top 10 highest-earning and most-visited national parks from the pool of 133 parks for the previous year.

Based on revenue from January to December 2023, the top 10 Thai national parks accumulated a total income of 1,651,868,101 baht (US$47 million). Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi topped the chart with an income of 377,321,864 baht (US$10 million). Similan Islands National Park in Phang Nga followed closely, generating a total income of 175,392,700 baht (US$5 million). Continued …

PM to announce plan for digital wallet loan this week

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin announced yesterday that the Council of State had given its opinion on the government’s plan to borrow 500 billion baht to distribute digital wallets to citizens.

The Council of State has given its opinion against the government’s plan to enact a 500-billion-baht loan bill for financing its digital wallet scheme, a source said.

The source from the Office of the Council of State said it would not be making public the advice, but it would let the government disclose the legal advisory council’s opinion. The government has urged the United States to restore Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) trade benefits and remove the country from its watch list for intellectual property (IP) enforcement, according to Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

A tour bus caught on fire in Phang Nga following a crash after a driver dumped tourists on a roadside in Phuket and drove away, leading police for a chase of over 70 kilometers.

The Tha Chatchai Police said that on Saturday they were notified from a tour company in Phuket that a bus driver left tourists for apparently no reason at a shop in Kathu, Phuket.
