Hua Hin’s new downtown food court is a delight

Expat News finally made a visit to Hua Hin’s newest food court, located in the middle of downtown. We were pleasantly surprised.

“The Patio” is hidden down a narrow alley directly across the street from the clock tower. A small blue sign is all that marks the spot. Developers have remade a hollowed-out space within the surrounding buildings, only a short walk through alleys or Phetkasem Road to the touristy Night Market.

Care evidently was taken in selecting food vendors, as there was a wide variety of choices, and not many duplicate vendors. Whole, salted tilapia, baked potatoes with the trimmings, meat and seafood kabobs, a variety of Thai dishes, and even pizza are available, but hardly the end of the offerings. There is also a full bar and live entertainment.

One might expect the prices to mirror the outrageous prices of the Night Market or the Cicada market, but prices at The Patio were much lower, although higher than other food courts where the rent is probably much lower. There is plenty of seating in the open air environment, and even with the crowd we saw that night, the vibe was quiet and friendly.

Public Songkran events in Hua Hin

Hua Hin is gearing up for a vibrant and larger-than-ever Songkran festival, which will take place between April 11-13. Songkran is, of course, the traditional Thai New Year, originally observed as a three-day national holiday from April 13 to 15.

The traditional activities are the pouring of scented water onto sacred Buddha images and the palms of one’s parents, as well as the famous water-splashing activity. But for many people, and in many parts of the country, Songkran means three days of water fights. Continued …

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was slammed by netizens after saying that the liberal cannabis policy had caused huge damage to the Thai people, with this outstripping any economic benefit.

Srettha, who mentioned this during an interview on a possible policy to relist cannabis as a category 5 narcotic, was sternly ticked off by some online users for allegedly not understanding the regulations and the network that is calling for the issuance of a cannabis bill to amend the current law, because large amounts are being smuggled in from neighboring countries, which is negatively affecting pharmacists and villagers who are using the plant for medical purpose. World Bank cuts Thai growth to 2.8% on weaker exports

Thailand’s economic growth is expected at 2.8% this year before accelerating to 3.0% in 2025, the World Bank said on Monday, on account of weak exports and a delayed budget.

Newly merged True Corp eyes wider market share

Telecom giant True Corp. is hoping to capture 65% of the market through its latest collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The main focus of the expansion will be selling SIM cards and roaming services to foreigners, True Corp.’s CEO Manat Manavutiveth said on Monday.

Bookings for electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to keep growing throughout the Bangkok International Motor Show, thanks to the launch of new EV models and sales promotion campaigns, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

More than 9 million foreign tourists recorded in first quarter

Thailand welcomed 9,370,297 overseas visitors between Jan. 1 and March 31, a 44% jump year on year, the Tourism and Sports Ministry reported on Monday. These visitors have generated tourism income of around 454.65 billion baht for Thai entrepreneurs, it added.

China was the top source market for foreign tourists to Thailand, with 1,756,337 arrivals, followed by Malaysia (1,168,574), Russia (622,813), South Korea (558,873), India (472,952), Germany (315,033), Laos (308,097), the UK (290,486), the U.S. (280,248) and Japan (271,427). Continued …

Passenger charges rise at six major Thai airports

Passenger service charges (PSC) at six major Thai airports have seen an increase, as announced by the Airports of Thailand. The charges, applicable on both domestic and international departing flights, have been raised at Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Don Mueang, Hat Yai, Phuket and Suvarnabhumi airports.

Dangerously thick smog intensifies, expands

Red-coded levels of PM2.5 dust have increased and expanded from the north into parts of the central plain and the northeast, with the worst levels in Chiang Mai, this morning.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that 21 provinces faced red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Cabinet green lights bills to modify alcohol control law

The Cabinet has given initial approval to five proposed bills aiming to modify the current alcohol control law, a move that could potentially lead to extended selling hours and more relaxed advertising rules. This decision has, however, sparked controversy among anti-alcohol advocates.

The legislation was introduced for its first reading in the House on Wednesday, and received a majority approval, with 389 voting in favor, nine against, and two abstentions. Chiang Mai Hotel Bookings at 30% as Air Pollution Concerns Loom

La-iad Bungsrithong, the Northern Thai Hotels Assn. advisor, has revealed that the statistics of hotel bookings in Chiang Mai were only 30% full compared to the start of April from the previous year, 2023.

‘Thailand could face 220 days of hot weather unless global warming contained’

If the Paris agreement on climate change is not enforced effectively, Southeast Asia could be hit harder by heat waves than other regions, and Thailand could face extremely hot weather for up to 220 days a year in about 20 years, a Thai academic said on Thursday.

Professor Seree Suparathit, director of the Center for Climate Change and Disasters at Rangsit University, was referring to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) held in Paris in December 2015. What’s with the water bills?

For many in Hua Hin, the home delivery and payment of water bills is over. This week, water bill delivery drivers alerted customers that they needed to head on down to the Water Department office to pay.

Normally, that’s not a big deal, as there are usually only a few people there paying their bills. But with the change came long lines at the Water Department, meaning waits for as long as an hour.

This change does not seem like a budgetary one, as the bills still have to be delivered. And it certainly is not a customer-friendly move. So, what’s going on?

Here’s a clue. We remember last year a news mention that 7-Eleven stores were being asked to take on the bill-collecting task, as they currently do with electric bills. We never heard another word about the convenient option, but our guess is the “pay the bill at the office” mandate will be a short one. – Hua Hin Expat News

House to deliberate bill legalizing casinos on March 28

The House is scheduled to deliberate a bill to legalize casino complexes on March 28, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Tuesday. If the House approves the bill, he will immediately submit it to the Cabinet for approval.

Julapun heads a special House committee in charge of studying the legalization of entertainment complexes with casinos as a way to tackle illegal gambling and to boost the economy. The Rural Doctor Society (RDS) says the Public Health Ministry’s data was breached again and this time, 2.2 million citizen records were stolen and put up for sale on the “dark web”.

The RDS backed its allegation on Tuesday with screen captures of the breachforum.cx website, showing a “god user” advertising the sale of 2.2 million records of Thai citizens for US$10,000 (about 360,000 baht). Continued …

Health ministry denies data leak involving 2.2M patients

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew gave his assurance on Tuesday that patient data stored in the ministry’s system is safe and secure following a rumor that the personal information of over 2.2 million Thai people had been leaked.

A new minister of finance may be appointed in April. It comes as the Pheu Thai-led government comes to terms with economic realities. This includes the growing problem of ballooning private sector debt and structural impediments to growth.

Fifty provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 dust this morning and 13 of them, mainly in the north, with seriously harmful levels of pollution.

The worst reading was in Mae Hong Son and the cleanest air was in Phuket. The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported that the highest level of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) was detected in the northern province of Mae Hong Son, at 159.1 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Rocky start for Thailand’s latest alcohol tax reform

Thailand has decided to cut its prohibitive alcohol taxes. The tax changes were announced earlier this year, and took effect from March 1. The cabinet proposed an alcohol tax slash at three levels.

First, the import duties of 54% will be reduced to 0%. Second, the excise tax will drop from 10% to 5%. Another excise tax, which applies to the volume and percentage of alcohol and calculated at 1,500 baht (£32.84) per liter for every 100 degrees of alcohol content, will now come down to 1,000 baht. Temperatures in Hua Hin and across Thailand are set to soar over the next week. The Thai Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast for Hua Hin says maximum temperatures will range from 36–38 °C, with average temperatures between March 6-12 reaching 35°C.

87 Wild Animals Seized at Suvarnabhumi Airport: Six Indian Tourists Face Charges

On Tuesday, the Suvarnabhumi Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, Customs Office, and relevant agencies received a report from airport security officers after detecting 87 wild animals stashed inside eight baggage items of six Indian tourists heading to Mumbai, India.

Salt, sea and spoonbills

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. Over 30 years ago, he and his neighbors established the Khok Kham Natural Conservation Club after working with an international survey team that wanted to get insights on the biodiverse marine habitats in Thailand’s wetlands. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming Thailand into a global aviation hub. The plans involve a nationwide overhaul and expansion of Thailand’s airport infrastructure to support both domestic and international travel.

And while Hua Hin’s existing airport wasn’t mentioned in the plans specifically, another interesting development for the region was. Contractors ordered to speed up work on Rama II

Contractors building the elevated motorway on Rama II Road, which has been the source of notorious bottlenecks, have been ordered to complete the job no later than mid-next year.

Swiss man’s visa revocation requested

The commander of Region 8 Police in Phuket, Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit has announced that Phuket police have made an official request to the Immigration Police to revoke the visa of 45-year-old Urh ‘David’ Fehr – he’s the Swiss citizen who is alleged to have attacked a female Thai doctor at the beachfront step of his villa in Cape Yamu.

CP All has revealed business profit results for 2023 for 7-Eleven, in which the convenience stores had an overall income of 399 billion baht, having a gross profit of 112 billion baht and increasing from the previous year by 16.1%.

Thai-US mission launched to find remains of missing HTMS Sukhothai crew

The Thai and U.S. navies launched a joint operation today to search for the remains of five crew missing from the sunken HTMS Sukhothai corvette, to salvage some weaponry and to disable some U.S.-made military equipment.

5,000 Nurses To Be Trained In 2 Years Amid Severe Shortage

Amid a critical shortage of 50,000 nurses nationwide, the Public Health Ministry is now launching an urgent course to train 2,500 of them a year over two years for a total of 5,000 starting next year.

Three distinct prehistoric animal fossils unearthed in Khon Kaen

A new discovery has surfaced in the Tambon Muang Wan region of Nam Phong district, Khon Kaen, as fossils of three different prehistoric animals have been unearthed. This comes as an addition to the previous findings in the same area.

The analysis of the collected fossils is being undertaken by a team led by Sasa-On Khansubha, a palaeontologist affiliated with the Sirindhorn Dinosaur Museum in Kalasin. Preliminary results hint that the fossils could belong to a carnivorous dinosaur with a diet consisting of fish, a herbivorous dinosaur, and a marine species. Continued …

MPs say ‘no’ to gender recognition bill

Parliament on Wednesday rejected the draft bill for legal gender recognition, title, and protection of gender-diverse people, with 154 votes in favor, 257 against, one abstention, and one vote not cast.

The bill was proposed by Move Forward party-listed MP Tunyawaj Kamolwongwat and his associates on the basis that currently there is no specific law to recognize and protect the human dignity, rights, freedom, and equality of gender-diverse people. Continued …

Health ministry wants ban on recreational cannabis by year-end

The government wants to ban recreational use of cannabis by the end of this year, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Wednesday, threatening to put thousands of marijuana shops and farms that have sprung up around the country since a decriminalization drive two years ago out of business.

Thailand will seek to get a new cannabis bill — which will explicitly outlaw recreational use of cannabis — approved by lawmakers in the lower house by the end of October, before parliament goes into recess, Dr. Cholnan said in Bangkok. Higher education ministry vows to prepare 150,000-strong work force for EV industry

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation intends to prepare a work force of at least 150,000 people to work in the electric vehicle industry within five years.
