Thailand exported goods worth US$23.278 billion in April, a 6.8% growth year-on-year, the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) announced Thursday.

Auto industry seeks stimulus as sales plummet

Vehicle production in April fell 11.02% year-on-year (YoY) to 104,667 units, and the auto industry is expecting measures from the government to boost demand, according to Surapong Paisitpatanapong, adviser to the president of the Automotive Industry Group.

The biggest decline in output for domestic sales was pickup trucks – down 45.94% YoY – while the manufacture of passenger cars fell by 5.03% YoY, said Surapong, who is also spokesperson for the Automotive Industry Group of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). Continued …

Service sector, tourism redeeming features in Thailand’s slow growth

The Thai economy expanded at a slow pace in February, but the performance of the service sector, which saw a large improvement in both the number of tourists and tourism revenue, was a silver lining. The Bank of Thailand (BOT) released its monthly economic outlook on Friday.

The central bank said private investment and manufacturing production also improved in some sectors, while private consumption remained stable. However, the value of merchandise exports, excluding gold, declined from the previous month by 2.9%, as exports of several industries remained sluggish. This is a result of a subdued recovery in global demand, a high level of inventory, as well as Thailand’s structural factors, the BOT said. Continued …

Household debt rises to 91.3% of GDP

The ratio of household debt to gross domestic product in Thailand rose slightly to 91.3% at the end of 2023 from 91% in September, the Bank of Thailand said on Friday, as the economy slowed.

The amount of debt was 16.4 trillion baht, versus 16.2 trillion baht at the end of the previous quarter, the central bank said in its monthly economic update. Continued …

Fuel tariff charge for May-August period to remain unchanged

The Energy Regulatory Commission has decided to freeze the fuel tariff (FT) for the May-August period at 39.72 satang/unit, which will keep the price of electricity at an average of 4.1805 baht/unit, excluding VAT, said ERC Secretary-General Komkrit Tantravanich today.

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has issued an alert about the escalating risk of influenza and dengue fever this year, amid the persisting threat of Covid-19. The department’s recent communicable diseases report highlights the significance of these health risks.

Department spokesperson Dr. Jurai Wongsawat disclosed that the beginning of the year saw substantial clusters of influenza in schools, prisons, and military camps. No less than four draft laws on alcohol control will soon go before Parliament, but none appear to contain a middle path that will satisfy everyone. Thai labor unions criticize new daily minimum wage

The Thai Labor Solidarity Confederation (TLSC) and State Enterprises Workers’ Relations Confederation (SEWRC) expressed disapproval of the new daily minimum wage of 400 baht approved by the tripartite wage committee. The wage increase is only applicable to some areas in 10 provinces, initiating a wave of criticism from the labor unions, who argue that this decision is unjust.

According to the unions, this wage discrepancy among workers within the same province will generate inequalities. They argue that despite the cost of basic commodities and services remaining consistent across the provinces, the wage disparity will create an unfair system. Thailand’s Agricultural Exports Under FTA Reach 500 billion baht

Chantanon Wannakejohn, secretary-general of the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, revealed the overall picture of Thailand’s agricultural trade with the world in 2023. Thailand had a total trade value of 2.372 trillion baht (65.2 billion USD), down 0.13% from 2022, which was 2.375 trillion baht. However, Thailand still had a trade surplus of 951 billion baht.

Koh Larn wind energy project under scrutiny for misuse of funds

The wind turbine project to generate renewable power on Koh Larn in Pattaya has reportedly become a waste of resources after critics alleged that the turbines have broken down for a long time and the city lacked enough funding to repair them.

Human-elephant relationship is a win-win

It has been many decades since Wanna Kerdzab’s family started using an area of over nearly five hectares, located near the edge of Kui Buri National Park to the east, as a source of food and land for farming.

IEAT working on feasibility study for Land Bridge Industrial Estate project

Temperatures in Hua Hin and across Thailand are set to soar over the next week. The Thai Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast for Hua Hin says maximum temperatures will range from 36–38 °C, with average temperatures between March 6-12 reaching 35°C.

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. Over 30 years ago, he and his neighbors established the Khok Kham Natural Conservation Club after working with an international survey team that wanted to get insights on the biodiverse marine habitats in Thailand’s wetlands. There is an end in sight to the ongoing construction of the main route between Bangkok and the south of Thailand. The Department of Highways has confirmed that the long-awaited upgrades to Rama II Road, a key artery to Thailand’s southern region, are set to be completed by 2025.

Thai forest area in decline, matching world trend

The world’s total forest areas have shrunk by nearly 20 million square kilometres in the past three decades, from 42.03 million sq.km. reported in 1992, to 40.44 million sq.km. in 2021, according to World Bank data, which was last updated in October 2023.

Thailand, meanwhile, does not make the World Bank’s top 10, or even top 20 list of the largest share of world forests. Data from the Royal Forest Department indicates that the kingdom had a total forest area of 162,909 sq.km. in 2023, a figure that has gradually dropped in recent years. Continued …

Coral and sharks back in Maya as scientists, locals restore ecosystem

Internationally famous Maya Bay saw 1.73 million visitors in 2016 and the National Park raked in about 561 million baht that year. But in 2018, when COVID hit, the Thai government saw a chance to restore the heavily used beach to its former glory.

The closure aimed to allow the damaged coral reefs and marine life to recover. 650,000 people treated for PM2.5-induced illnesses so far this year

More than 650,000 people have received medical treatment for illnesses caused by air pollution since the beginning of this year, particularly related to PM2.5, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Of these, more than 300,000 had respiratory diseases, about 80,000 heart and brain diseases, over 110,000 eye infections and irritations, and over 140,000 had skin infections. Continued …

Too little rainfall in Hua Hin, Army asked to help address possible drought

On the second day of a light salvage mission undertaken by United States and Thai navies to remove armaments and other objects from HTMS Sukhothai, which capsized and sank in stormy seas late 2022, killing 24 sailors with five others missing, the corvette’s nameplate, a Buddha image and some documents were brought to the surface.

Thai exports in January see highest growth in 19 months

Thailand’s exports in January expanded for the sixth consecutive month, totaling US$22.6 billion (815.7 billion baht), and growing 10% year on year. Ministry of Commerce permanent secretary Keerati Rushchano said on Friday that the growth in January was the highest in 19 months, since June 2022.

However, the country’s imports totaled $25.4 billion (914.9 billion baht) in January, an increase of 2.6% year on year, with a trade deficit of $2.7 billion (99.2 billion baht), according to the official. Continued …

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Friday poured cold water on plans to relocate Bangkok Port out of the city, warning of disruption to exports.

Chinese automakers were the top three electric vehicle (EV) brands for Thai people last year, according to the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC).

A subcommittee under the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has agreed to enhance welfare benefit programs for the elderly, babies and the disabled, marking a significant step in improving the well-being of these groups.

Thai Airways records recovery with US$782 million profit in 2023

Largest ‘Wai Khru’ Muay Thai ritual wins Guinness World Record

To celebrate Muay Thai Day and promote the country’s iconic martial art as a soft power, the “Amazing Muay Thai World Festival 2024” was launched on Tuesday at Rajabhakti Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin at the well-known tourist attraction in Hua Hin district.

Organized by the Royal Thai Army and private partners, the event was joined by 5,000 Muay Thai fighters from the army and the Muay Thai Prajawsuea Sport Assn. for the Wai Khru ritual to pay respect to Muay Thai masters. The ceremony on Tuesday was recorded as the world’s biggest Wai Khru Muay Thai ceremony in the Guinness World Records. Continued …

Hua Hin’s Pone Kingpetch honored at Muay Thai Festival

The Amazing Muay Thai World Festival 2024, a celebration of Thai boxing heritage, also served as a platform to honor Hua Hin’s own Pone Kingpetch, Thailand’s first boxing world champion, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 2023.

Hua Hin Mayor Nopporn Wutikul was presented with a certificate of honor from the World Boxing Council Asia (WBC Asia) recognizing Kingpetch’s historic achievement. 8-year-old to attempt to windsurf across the Gulf of Thailand again today

All eight-year-old Shane wants for his next birthday is the claim to fame that he has windsurfed across the Gulf of Thailand from Hua Hin to Pattaya – a trip of 107 kilometers (66 miles). Today is the big day because wind conditions are finally right for Thanawat “Shane” Promwaen of Pattaya to take up the challenge – just 3 days before his ninth birthday on Feb. 11.

Young Shane excels at “wing foiling” and “kite foiling” – a hydro-foil lifts the board above the water – and plans to enter international competitions this year on an ambitious journey to becoming the youngest wing foiling world champion and representing Thailand at the Olympics.

This will be his third attempt to scud across the Gulf of Thailand, in the hope weather conditions won’t let him down this time. His last attempt was scuppered on Jan. 24, when the wind dropped suddenly after 50 km had been covered.

Thailand’s intrepid windsurfing star-in-the-making will be flagged-off from Surfspot in Hua Hin and will land at Pattaya Kitesurfing Clubloongchat on Na Jomtien Beach.

Ministry to roll out ‘dust-free’ hospital rooms for PM2.5 patients

The Ministry of Public Health says it plans to provide “dust-free” hospital rooms for at-risk patients in 30 provinces following a rise in the number of people affected by PM2.5.

The Public Health Ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, said more than 10,000 patients were reported to have been affected by the fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) over the past four months, with 1,407 needing emergency care. Continued …

37 protected forests off-limits to outsiders to prevent bush fires

Thirty-seven protected forests, including several wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, have been declared off-limits to outsiders without prior permission to enter, as the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation ramps up its efforts to reduce bush fires and ease airborne pollution as the dry season approaches.

Dengue fever becoming big problem in Thailand, 8,000+ infected this month

The Disease Control Department (DCD) warned people to protect themselves against mosquito bites, saying dengue fever has become a serious problem, with over 8,000 infected and 13 patients killed, so far.

Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn, DCD director-general, said as many as 8,197 people had been diagnosed with dengue in January, marking a 91.3% increase from January last year, when 4,286 people were infected. Continued …

Much Ado About Elephant Pants

Over the past several days, various Thai politicians and government officials have made headlines, at least on Thai language news, with consistent updates on what they call a pressing issue – elephant pants. Specifically, their concerns have been around illegal imports of the elephant pants from China and how Thai officials feel the prices are undercutting those of Thai-made elephant pants.

Thailand considers elephant pants, commonly seen on tourists and especially backpackers, as a “soft power” and fashion symbol for the country. Well, at least some Thai officials do, not everyone is fond of the elephant pants or believe they are particularly fashionable according to recent conflicting and unconfirmed reports from Thailand’s Soft Power Fashion Committee. Interior Ministry Initiates Draft Gun Amnesty Regulations

Despite potential warnings from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), the government has confirmed plans to proceed with the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat agreed to let the digital wallet policy committee begin work next week.

Korean Air opens more routes to Thailand as tourism demand rebounds

Korean Air has announced two more weekly flights from Incheon to Bangkok, as tourism demand rebounds to pre-Covid levels. The extra flights on the Incheon-Don Mueang route are serving high demand from Koreans seeking to escape winter in January and February, said country manager Kim Jongmin.

New insights Into Thailand’s Iron Age Log Coffin Culture

A mortuary practice known as Log Coffin culture characterizes the Iron Age of highland Pang Mapha in northwestern Thailand. Between 2,300 and 1,000 years ago, individuals were buried in large wooden coffins on stilts, mostly found in caves and rock shelters.
