New bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport. Online ticketing and advance bookings are still in the works.

  • The bus will leave Hua Hin at 7 am and 2 pm
  • It will depart from Don Mueang at 7:30 am and 4 pm

Most of the country to experience thundershowers until Tuesday

The north, northeast, central including Bangkok, and eastern regions will experience a hot day and isolated thundershowers today, the Thai Meteorological Department said. These conditions are due to the southerly and southeasterly winds bringing moisture from the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to the upper country, the department said.

Isolated thundershowers are forecast in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla; minimum 21-26°C, maximum 31-35°C; waves about 1-2 meters high and above 2 meters high in thundershowers. Continued …

The Ministry of Transport is considering moving the capital’s inter-provincial bus terminals to Krungthep Aphiwat Central Terminal in an effort to ensure a seamless connection for travelers with the city’s mass transport network.

Inside a Thai military camp, four Ethiopian men yesterday showed the bruises and scars on their bodies they said were sustained during their time in one of Myanmar’s most notorious scam compounds. “I got a lot of punishments,” said 19-year-old Yotor, who gave only one name and had cuts along his leg. “I received electric shocks every day.”

New 1st-class bus service from Bangkok airports to Hua Hin, Pattaya

State-run Transport Co. will launch a first-class bus service from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports to Hua Hin and Pattaya on March 8.

There will be two round trips daily between Don Mueang airport and Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a distance of 216 kilometers per trip. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. Continued …

Thailand Faces Surge in Influenza: 100,000 Cases, 9 Deaths

Thailand is grappling with a serious influenza outbreak, having witnessed nearly 100,000 infections alongside nine fatalities in just 15 days. The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed this increase, underlining schools as significant hotspots. Cyber Police in about-face on scam workers: Most were trafficked

The cyber police said most of the 260 scam workers who have been screened are victims, with only two to three having volunteered to work for the call-center criminals rather just one of them being trafficked as earlier stated.

The head of the Technology Crime Suppression Division police, said 50 cyber policemen are working with frontline agencies in collecting information on criminal activities of these call-center gangs. Thailand May Ease Overseas Income Tax Rules Amid Global Changes

In a move that could significantly impact expatriates and Thai nationals alike, Thailand’s government is contemplating adjustments to the taxation of overseas income. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira has indicated that the global economic landscape necessitates a re-evaluation of current tax regulations, though specific details were not provided.

Presently, the Thai Revenue Department (TRD) stipulates that, effective Jan. 1, 2024, any assessable income transferred into Thailand from abroad by either Thai citizens or foreigners residing in Thailand for at least 180 days within a calendar year will be subject to personal income tax. Young Woman’s Tragic End in PKK Highlights Gambling Dangers

A 22-year-old woman, Natthaporn, was tragically found dead under a mango tree in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. She was reportedly overwhelmed by debt from online slot machine gambling. Her husband, Sukit, discovered her lifeless body Thursday after she failed to return home.

Wildfires rage across northern Thailand

The north of Thailand is grappling with a surge in wildfires, with 401 hotspots detected across 17 provinces, the Region 3 Forest Fire Control Center said. Phetchabun province has been particularly affected, registering 82 hotspots – the highest in the region – with fires spreading across almost the entire province.

The latest data released Thursday reveals the scale of the crisis. While specific data for other provinces was unavailable as of press time, Phetchabun’s 82 hotspots are of significant concern. Many Thai nationals who were once part of international scam call centers are now claiming they were tricked into it. Thai authorities recently cracked down on fraudulent call centers operating along the Thai-Myanmar border. These scam hubs had been conning people out of their hard-earned money, but when the government cut off their power supply, the scammers were left stranded and forced to return home.

The Gold Traders Assn. this morning announced buying prices for gold ornaments at 45,222.28 baht per baht weight and for gold bars at 46,050 baht per baht weight.

RE: Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax

“Thank you for the article ‘Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax‘ and thank you ‘Thesatat’ for being a ‘pipe cleaner’ trying to be a good person and file taxes in PKK. The head of the PKK tax office personally promised us at a meeting in Hua Hin that “All DTAs will be honored.” Clearly, he hasn’t shared that with his subordinates. Personally, I’m going through AIT (American International Tax Advisors) and let them deal with these issues. At the end of the day (which may be two to three years out – maybe more – we hope to pay only what is legally required.” – PB

Editor: We have asked the tax consultants we used for our previous reporting to assess this latest news, but this is probably just a lack of understanding on the part of local officials about the tax. We anticipated this might be a problem early on, as the law is ambiguous and there are roughly 90 dual tax treaties to be considered, not all the same. We doubt, at this stage, that there has been any education of local officials, and even if there is, the complications might make them resort to an “everyone has to pay the tax” mentality. There will probably be a lot of misinformation on this issue as we go forward and we will try to keep you informed as we hear about problems or solutions. Getting expert guidance as you have done is probably a wise move.

The 2024 remittance tax changes have introduced complexities that some local tax offices — especially in provincial areas — may not yet fully understand. Many expats have reported difficulties due to inconsistent guidance, as well as language barriers when trying to clarify their tax position.

“In cases like U.S. Social Security, the rules are clear: it is not taxable in Thailand, nor does it need to be included on a Thai tax return. However, misunderstandings at the local level can lead to unnecessary stress and potential disputes with tax authorities.

“For expats looking to avoid these difficulties, using a professional tax filing service can help ensure compliance while avoiding the frustration of dealing with tax offices unfamiliar with international tax agreements.”

Top Thai Officers Probed Over Links to Scams in Myanmar

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is conducting an investigation into alleged connections between senior police officers and criminal activities linked to scam operations across the Burmese border. This action follows the transfer of five senior officers from Tak province, a move that has raised eyebrows due to the significant wealth of one of the officers.

At the heart of the investigation is Police Maj Gen Ekkarat Intasueb, acting chief of Inspection Division 6 for the Office of the Inspector General. Myanmar to Repatriate 7,000 Call Center Scam Victims to Thailand

Myanmar is preparing to return approximately 7,000 victims of call center scams to Thailand. Phumtham Wechayachai, deputy prime minister and defense minister, confirmed this plan, stressing that these victims should be repatriated directly to their home countries without being temporarily housed in Thailand.

After cutting electricity, internet and fuel supply from five points to Myanmar border townships where scam centers are operating, Deputy Prime Minister/Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is now expanding this strategy to three districts and an island in four provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border to suppress transnational criminals holed up across that border.

The government plans to launch measures to cope with uncertainties arising from U.S. President Donald Trump’s import-tariff policy, Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul said yesterday.

Thai Exports Surge by 8.7% in December Amid Looming Trade War Concerns

In December, Thai exports surged by 8.7% year-on-year, extending a six-month growth streak. The total export value reached USD24,765.9 million, surpassing forecasts from SCB EIC and the Reuters Poll. Residents of 44 provinces enjoyed good to very good air quality this morning, while 12 of the 76 provinces had orange (starting to affect health) levels of PM2.5, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Swiss Dog Owner Defies PKK Beach Ban

A Swiss man has reignited controversy by defying a ban on walking his dogs at Suan Luang Beach, Bang Saphan district, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, despite previous attacks on tourists. The issue, which first drew widespread attention in August 2024, resurfaced after Mathias, the dog owner, was spotted on the beach on Jan. 20 with four unleashed dogs, two large and two small.

On Thursday, Thai and foreign tourists joined residents of Suan Luang Beach to lodge a formal complaint with the Pong Prasad Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO). They reported that Mathias, who had been ordered to remove his dogs from the area while legal proceedings were ongoing, has continued to disregard the ban, raising fears for public safety. Alarm sounds over hazardous air pollution

The government has announced urgent measures to combat the PM2.5 pollution crisis, including offering free bus and electric train rides and asking private companies to allow employees to work from home. The prime minister has instructed agencies to implement urgent, short-term measures to address it.

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has ordered Thap Lan National Park in Prachin Buri to stop the controlled burning of a 600-rai area in the park after facing heavy criticism for creating air pollution.

Bangkok chokes on toxic air as PM2.5 levels hit danger zone

Bangkok’s air quality plummeted to hazardous levels, with PM2.5 dust particles soaring to the orange health-threatening category across all 50 districts, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported today.

The average PM2.5 concentration in the city reached 47.6 µg/m³ this morning, significantly exceeding the safe limit of 37.5 µg/m³. The five worst-affected districts are Nong Khaem (56.7 µg/m³), Khlong Sam Wa (56.4 µg/m³), Thon Buri (55.3 µg/m³), Nong Chok (55.2 µg/m³), and Min Buri (55.2 µg/m³). Continued …

Casinos will be 10% of proposed entertainment complex

Chinese buyers boost Thai condo sales to 51 billion baht

Foreigners have purchased Thai condos worth 51 billion baht in just nine months. China is the leading buyer, while India has made the most expensive purchases.

In addition, Bangkok led the way with 38.7% of the total units transferred, followed closely by Chonburi Province at 36%. Corporate income tax cut to 10% in SEZs

The Revenue Department has reduced the corporate income tax rate for businesses in special economic zones (SEZs) to 10% for 10 years to promote investment in the zones.

According to Pinsai Suraswadi, director-general of the department, the tax reduction was approved by the cabinet on Jan. 13 and the department issued a royal decree to implement the tax reduction in SEZs. President Joe Biden’s outgoing administration is finalizing rules that will effectively bar nearly all Chinese cars and trucks from the U.S. market, as part of a crackdown on vehicle software and hardware from China.

Handout phase 2 starts on Jan 27

The second phase of the government’s 10,000-baht cash handout will begin on Jan 27, two days earlier than planned, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said yesterday. The new phase will involve between 3.5 million to 4 million elderly citizens aged 60 and above receiving the cash via the government’s PromptPay app.

Chinese Tourist Dies in Jet Ski Collision on Patong Beach

A 33-year-old Chinese tourist lost his life after a jet ski collision in Patong Bay yesterday. The incident occurred near the dolphin park area of Patong Beach, Kathu District.
