UK Confirms Pension Freeze for Expats in Thailand

UK Pensions Minister Torsten Bell has updated MPs on the impact of the frozen state pension policy on British retirees living overseas, including thousands based in Thailand. The policy affects nearly half a million UK pensioners who live in countries where annual state pension increases under the triple lock do not apply.

For those in Thailand and other affected nations, including Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa, pension payments remain fixed at the rate first received after leaving the UK. Some individuals are reported to be receiving as little as £20 a week, compared with the current full new state pension of £241.30 a week. Continued …

The reductions took effect today, with petrol, gasohol, and all diesel products lowered by 70 satang per liter. Premium diesel prices were cut more sharply, by 1 baht per liter. Following the adjustment, Bangkok retail prices, excluding local maintenance tax, were listed as follows: Continued …

FIFA denies World Cup broadcasting price cut for Thailand

The Federation Internationale de Football Assn. has so far declined to meet Thailand’s persistent call for a substantial cut in price of the broadcasting rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026, whereas Vietnam, a fellow ASEAN member country, has been reportedly offered a relatively low price.

Jasmine International has quietly negotiated in vain with the FIFA for a sizeable reduction in the broadcasting rights for the world soccer tournament jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada between June 12 and July 20 local time, which had been reportedly offered at 1.3 billion baht for Thailand, compared to less than 500 million baht for Vietnam. Nominee structures thrust into the spotlight

The recent crackdown on alleged nominee structures linked to foreign land ownership on Koh Phangan has reignited debate over long-standing concerns in Thailand’s property sector, particularly in resort destinations popular with overseas buyers.

According to Surachet Kongcheep, head of research at property consultancy Cushman & Wakefield Thailand, the issue extends far beyond a single island or nationality. Continued …

Thai tap water is not drinking water quality. Many components in tap water, such as limescale or microbiological impurities, cannot be seen with the naked eye. Nevertheless, they affect the entire water supply and ultimately also the wholesomeness and taste of the water. Water purifier systems are indispensable to improve the quality of life. Thanks to the innovative technology of our water filter systems, it is possible to turn conventional tap water into high-quality drinking water.

Fuel, fares, and food put May inflation back in focus

Thailand’s inflation rose again in May, as high domestic fuel prices, transport fares, and prepared food costs continued to feed into household expenses, while the Commerce Ministry said the government’s “Thais Help Thais Plus” measure had not created significant price pressure.

Nantapong Chiralerspong, director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office under the Commerce Ministry, said headline inflation increased by 2.79% in May. The rise was driven partly by domestic fuel prices remaining high amid tensions in the Middle East. Continued …

Thais Help Thais Plus spending tops 10-billion baht

The Thais Help Thais Plus 60/40 co-payment scheme has continued to draw strong public response, with total spending exceeding 10 billion baht just five days after the Finance Ministry opened the program for public use on June 1.

April Thai Exports Surge on Electronics Boom as Trade Deficit Hits Record

Thailand’s export engine is running hot — powered by electronics, AI-related demand, and a rebound in agriculture. But imports are running even hotter, especially in energy and electronic components, pushing the trade deficit to unprecedented levels.

Thai exports surged to USD 31.6 billion in April, expanding by 23.1% year-on-year and accelerating from 18.7% the previous month. This growth exceeded expectations, driven primarily by electronics, which grew 64.6%, benefiting from the global technology upcycle and strong demand from key markets like the US. The project, formally designed as transport infrastructure to support the Southern Economic Corridor, is one of Thailand’s largest proposed megaprojects, with total investment value often cited at nearly 1 trillion baht. It has also drawn criticism over investment viability and possible environmental impacts in the affected areas. Continued …

Land bridge project hits new snag

Thailand’s flagship land bridge project has suffered a significant setback after an expert review committee ordered fresh Environmental and Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) studies for planned deep-sea ports in Ranong and Chumphon. The ports are key components of the proposed transport corridor linking the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

The decision is expected to delay progress on the project, which has faced growing opposition from environmental groups, marine scientists, and local communities concerned about its potential impact on coastal ecosystems, fisheries, and traditional livelihoods. Continued …

Nearly 90% of oil and gas from the Strait flew to Asia before the conflict. The loss of one of the most critical energy flows is causing significant pain for ordinary people, businesses, and policymakers. Continued …

Vilhelm Academy: Western qualifications for Hua Hin-based students

Vilhelm International Academy launched in March 2026 and has is campus at “The Hub” in Hin Lek Fai, less than 10 minutes from the center of town. They provide mentor-led academic supervision for students studying through accredited online school programs, whether independently enrolled or through integrated programs offered at Vilhelm. This means that students follow a fixed timetable, complete coursework under supervision, and receive ongoing progress monitoring.  They can do this whist studying for their GCSE’s, A-Levels, NCAA approved US courses, or any other online school they choose to use.

Unlike more traditional options, at the academy children can learn at their own pace, not being forced forward before they are ready and also not being held back by the rest of the class. When they are ready to move on they do so. By coming to the academy each day, they are able to complement their studies with activities that develop leadership skills, community service (such as the recent helmet initiative), complemented by daily sports and physical activity to support a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

You can visit the website for more details, or you can book an appointment to meet with the academy co-ordinator to discuss what you are looking for and explain what they can offer. There is a completely free five-day trial period that can be taken advantage of by anyone interested in seeing if the academy is the right fit for them.

Thai consumer confidence falls to global low

Consumer confidence in April plunged into crisis territory, recording the sharpest monthly decline globally and across the Asia-Pacific region, as economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, rising living costs, and dissatisfaction with government efforts to address the economy eroded public sentiment, according to the Ipsos Global Consumer Confidence Index.

The findings suggest cautious consumer sentiment is likely to persist through to the end of the year. “For the first time, this survey shows that Thai consumer confidence has fallen to its lowest level in the four years since the survey began,” said Pimtai Suwannasuk, senior client manager at Ipsos. Thailand eyes foreign-backed oil reserves and data center power rules

Energy Minister Akanat Promphan has floated a plan to attract Middle Eastern oil producers to invest in a strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) in Thailand, positioning the country as a regional oil distribution hub while strengthening long-term energy security.

He also said the government was preparing conditions for data center investors, whose operations consume huge amounts of electricity, to take greater responsibility for the power system. One option would be to require them to buy electricity at a rate above actual cost, with the margin used to help reduce power bills for households and existing industries. Continued …

Chiang Mai feels like Thailand exhaled slightly. Bangkok has the chaos, the islands have the beaches, but Chiang Mai has balance. Temples glow in the evening light, cafés hide behind jungle plants, night markets somehow smell amazing from three streets away, and the mountains sit quietly around the city like they know they’re part of the reason everyone stays longer than planned.

It’s affordable, endlessly walkable in parts, and dangerously good at making you comfortable very quickly. Continued …

Study Names Thailand as ASEAN’s Leading Electric Vehicle Market

Thailand is emerging as Southeast Asia’s most NEV-ready market, with 58% of consumers considering hybrid or electric vehicles — significantly above the regional average of 42.8%. Key purchase motivators include lower fuel costs, charging availability, and longer driving range.

Chiva-Som Highlighted as Wellness Tourism Thrives in Thailand

In the third season of The White Lotus we got to see therapists clad in lilac pajamas kneading supine guests with a heated herbal ball. We got to see Walton Goggins try “stress management meditation.” We got to see a lot more than that.

Thailand, “The Land of Smiles,” and wellness are now so closely associated that they’ve reached their satirical apogee. Never mind that many Thai healing practices go back more than 2,500 years, Mike White’s “funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality” will draw more bandwagon westerners, not less. As a result, luxury hotels across the country are investing heavily in wellness tourism, an industry worth $35 billion to Thailand in 2024, with a growth rate of 8.5%, according to the Global Wellness Institute. Facing dug-in German-backed Ottoman forces, more than 10,000 Australian and New Zealand servicemen were killed in the Allied expedition. Continued …

80% of Thai Army Conscripts Battling Drug Addiction

In a startling revelation, Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong announced that up to 80% of men conscripted for compulsory military service in Thailand each year are grappling with drug addiction. The minister called for urgent discussions to address this pressing issue and formulate effective rehabilitation strategies.

Thailand’s military conscription, dictated by the 1954 Military Service Act, involves an annual lottery system where men aged 21 and older draw cards — black cards mean exemption, while red cards require two years of service. This year, it is estimated that of the approximately 80,000 conscripted individuals, the overwhelming majority are drug users, and a concerning 10% are severely addicted. Continued …

Adith Chairrattananon, honorary secretary general for Thai travel agents, has agreed that gray businesses require preventive measures such as reducing the visa-free stay for Chinese travelers because of exploitation of loopholes in the rules. He suggests “15-30 days” should be enough for bona fide Chinese vacationers. Continued …

Bangkok Bank sends expat customers financial requests

From Expat Tax Thailand

Last year, Kasikorn Bank (KBank) began issuing emails requesting compliance information under the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) and FATCA (for U.S. citizens). Now, some expat clients of Bangkok Bank have received similar requests. Example here.

This is a standard procedure, in line with Thailand’s commitment to global tax transparency regulations. This comprehensive resource: Thai Banks CRS/FATCA Compliance can help navigate this. This article includes a detailed video explanation, step-by-step guidance on completing the forms, and answers to common questions.

Bangkok Bank is complying with CRS and FATCA regulations:
  • For Americans: FATCA requires banks to report account details to U.S. tax authorities.
  • For non-Americans: CRS ensures tax residency information is shared with international tax authorities to prevent tax evasion.

This is not unique to you or your bank — all Thai banks are required to implement these measures following Thailand’s adoption of the CRS agreement in 2020.

Under CRS rules, banks must:
  • Confirm the tax residency of all account holders.
  • Identify any connections to other countries for tax purposes.
  • Share financial account details with local tax authorities, who may exchange this information internationally if needed.

This ensures overseas income and assets are properly declared. While this may feel new in Thailand, it’s a standard practice globally. Switching banks won’t avoid these requests, as compliance is mandatory across all Thai financial institutions.

What Should You Do?
  • Stay calm — there’s no immediate rush.
  • Check your request for the specific deadline.
  • The advice from Bangkok Bank is to complete the form and take it to your local branch.
  • You can direct questions to Bangkok Bank’s helpline 1333 (Extension 2 for English).
  • Refer to our guidance: Visit this article for detailed instructions and a helpful video.

Is it time to pack and leave Pattaya?

Pattaya has always been a city of extremes — vibrant yet chaotic, affordable yet increasingly expensive, exciting yet sometimes overwhelming. As the low season approaches, many long-term residents and tourists are asking themselves: is it time to pack up and leave, or should they ride it out until conditions improve?

There’s no denying that Pattaya has seen better days. Many feel that it’s going downhill fast, with increasing crime, economic struggles, and a changing tourism demographic. Some argue that Phuket isn’t much better, as the type of tourists coming to Thailand nowadays are often perceived as low-spending, disruptive, and inconsiderate. But in truth, there are problems everywhere — nowhere is perfect. Continued …

Thailand bows to US tariff threat: Feed mills eye $2.8 billion in imports

Thailand’s animal feed industry is pitching to buy about $2.8 billion worth of agricultural commodities annually from the United States instead of other suppliers, as the country seeks to narrow its $35-billion trade surplus and head off possible tariffs on its exports.

Thailand had been experiencing a sharp rise in influenza infections, with 107,570 reported cases and nine fatalities this year as of Feb. 18, according to the Public Health Ministry. Thai Tourism Sector Shaken by US Tariffs and Market Uncertainty

The Thai tourism industry is currently navigating choppy waters as it faces potential disruptions from U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs and shifting global markets. Airlines and hoteliers are on high alert, with fuel prices and an unpredictable Chinese tourism influx being pivotal concerns in a landscape marked by economic challenges.

Recently imposed U.S. tariffs are anticipated to affect global oil prices, a critical element for the travel sector, especially airlines. Tassapon Bijleveld, executive chairman of Asia Aviation, which holds the majority stake in Thai AirAsia, stressed that while low fuel prices currently advantage airlines, fluctuations tied to trade policies could upend this benefit. Instant White Lotus Effect: Koh Samui interest surges after popular TV show

Interest from the United States grew by 65% compared to last month’s average. The search increase from the United States sees the market enter Koh Samui’s inbound top five based on accommodation searches made on Agoda. Overtourism has led to environmental emergencies, irreversible damage to historical landmarks, and tension within local communities.

At what point does tourism stop being beneficial and create problems? Issues arise when the tourists outnumber the locals, as many places are now finding out. Here are the top 10 most overtouristed cities in the world. Continued …

What a more sustainable tourism industry could look like

This weekend, the much-anticipated third season of the HBO show “White Lotus” dropped its first episode. The show famously shows a dark side of tourism, illustrating the class divides between wealthy Westerners who travel to high-end resorts oozing with entitlement and the locals whose livelihoods depend on catering to their needs.

Even without the boost of the show, tourism to Koh Samui — Thailand’s second-largest island and a popular travel destination — has been in conflict with the island’s natural beauty. The local population of 70,000 is dwarfed by annual visitors in the millions, and the sheer volume of visitors means that local water resources are constrained, waste management is a growing problem, and construction has damaged the nearby reef and other ecosystems. Thailand’s longstanding prohibition on alcohol sales from 2pm to 5pm is under scrutiny, as key industry figures call for its repeal, labeling it as a relic of the past that stymies both tourist satisfaction and business potential.

(Also, in case you missed yesterday’s announcement, alcohol sales will be banned tomorrow from midnight until midnight.)
