British man commits suicide in Cha Am, leaving sand messages for Thai wife

A British man left messages in the sand for his wife and children before taking his own life on Cha Am Beach in the southern province of Phetchaburi. He was reportedly distressed over two legal cases and a 400,000-baht loss to a friend.

A Thai tourist discovered the lifeless body of the British man, later identified as 42-year-old Antony Gerrard Kelly, at an abandoned beachfront pavilion on Cha Am Beach yesterday. Kelly was found hanging in the pavilion. Continued …

120 arrested in underwear at Bangkok hotel party

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

In the room, police found 124 Thai and foreign men, described as gay, in their underwear, along with a few women and some ecstasy and ketamine. Continued …

British man’s Thai-high trip goes up in smoke at Manchester customs

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. While Sohail insisted he had been on an indulgent eight-day jaunt in Bangkok, a scan revealed his luggage contained not just holiday mementoes but 40 kilograms of the class B drug. Continued …

Increase in unemployment likely in early 2025, expert says

Need for homes for elderly rises as Thailand becomes aged society

Demand for nursing homes and residences for the elderly has surged as Thailand has entered an aged society, according to results of a survey by the Real Estate Information Center (REIC) released on Sunday.

In Thailand, the number of people aged above 60 years accounts for 20% of the population. The aged population is expected to increase by 4.89% annually. Over 56% of Thais expect to travel during the New Year holidays

A majority of survey respondents planned to travel during the New Year, of whom over 90% are opting for domestic trips, according to a nationwide Dusit Poll by Suan Dusit University.

Chinese visitors to Thailand between January-November top 6 million

Foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1 this year reached 32,020,169 visitors, generating approximately 1.5 trillion baht in revenue, the Tourism and Sports ministry reported last week.

China ranked as the top source of tourists with 6,214,226 visitors, followed by Malaysia (4,506,898), India (1,915,152), South Korea (1,685,600), and Russia (1,503,312). October exports reach $27.22 billion, highest in 19 months

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), reported that Thailand’s exports in October reached a value of US$27.22 billion, marking 14.6% growth and achieving the highest export value in 19 months.

Imports for the same period amounted to $28.02 billion, up 15.9%, resulting in a trade deficit of $794.4 million. Over the past decade, Thailand has been a primary destination for Japanese investment. Japan’s net foreign direct investment (FDI) in Thailand accounts for 22% of its total investment in Southeast Asia (second only to Singapore) and over 36% of Thailand’s total foreign investment.

Minister sounds alarm on emissions

Legislation may be needed to enforce carbon reduction if Thailand fails to meet its emission targets, says Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira.

In his keynote speech at a seminar on net-zero targets, Pichai said Thailand has committed under international agreements to achieving net-zero carbon emissions within 41 years. ERC mulls 31% electricity tariff hike despite lower fuel costs

Businesses and households are facing a significant decision regarding the future of their electricity costs as the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) considers changes to the power tariff. Despite a projected decrease in fuel costs, the ERC is evaluating whether to maintain the current rate or implement an increase of 26% to 31% early next year.

The existing tariff, set at 4.18 baht per kilowatt-hour, is in effect until Dec. 31. A public opinion survey is currently being conducted online by the ERC, with the results influencing the new rate to be announced for January to April 2025. Continued …

Bangkok police detained seven individuals yesterday, including six officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, linked to an elaborate Bt300-million extortion scheme involving a fake search warrant and passport forgery accusations. Thai economy continued to grow in Q3, but slowed in September

Thailand’s economy in the third quarter this year expanded from the previous quarter, but economic activities began slowing in September, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) said in its monthly report on economic and monetary conditions.

The central bank said the trend in September was mainly the decline of exports after strong growth in August. Private consumption also declined, it said, particularly in durables, consistent with a decrease in manufacturing production, while private investment was stable. Continued …

The Thai industrial sector is at risk of flood and drought triggered by global warming, and those disasters were likely to become more severe in the future, the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) warned on Wednesday.

Thailand’s Winter Expected to Start Oct 29, Colder Than Last Year

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has announced that the 2024 winter season is set to begin on Oct. 29 and is expected to last until late February 2025. This season is anticipated to be colder than last year, with December 2024 to January 2025 marking the coldest period.

According to Dr. Sukanyaniyawinyacharn, acting director-general of the Meteorological Department, the onset of winter is assessed by three factors: a consistent drop in temperatures below 23°C across northern Thailand, a shift to northeast and east winds at lower altitudes, and a gradual decrease in rainfall. Fireworks Explosion Claims 4 Lives, Injures 7 at Kathin Festival Celebration

Retirement age to go up to 65

The Labor Ministry plans to raise the retirement age for both private and government sectors to 65 years, the same as in Singapore and Switzerland, said Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. Bangkok Braces for Rising PM2.5 Levels Amid Cool Weather

Bangkok is set to experience increased pollution levels over the weekend as PM2.5 particles hang heavy in the air, exacerbated by cool weather and poor circulation, according to the Pollution Control Department. Unsafe PM2.5 concentrations were recorded in 36 areas across the city, with Nong Khaem district leading the pack at 51.1µg/m³.

These fine particulate matters were measured between 19.5µg/m³ and 53.8µg/m³ early this morning. A combination of local climatic conditions and external influences, like the Trami tropical cyclone traversing the South China Sea, is expected to induce more rain next week, which promises to alleviate the pollution. Bangkok, Chiang Mai among world’s worst cities for air pollution

After the floods, air pollution follows in Thailand. Bangkok and Chiang Mai have made it into the top 50 cities worldwide for small dust particle pollution, according to the latest data from Swiss-based IQAir.

A local resident was left in shock after discovering a massive black king cobra, over two meters long, hiding in their parked car. The incident, which took place near Tham Pha Pu Temple in Ban Nam Phu, Loei Province, quickly drew the attention of police and rescue volunteers.

A report about high levels of pesticides found in sampled Shine Muscat grapes has raised fears about food safety, leading many to wonder how many fruits and vegetables sold at markets are laced with toxic chemicals.

(Editor: There have been previous reports that garlic imported from China is grown with toxic chemicals. Hua Hin wet markets and groceries typically carry lower-cost Chinese garlic, which can be identified by the flat bottom of the bulbs.)

The playful and pudgy mammal that went viral from its Thai zoo enclosure has a sad story to tell about her fellows hippos. Moo Deng is the two-month-old pygmy hippo who flicks her ears in joy and likes splashing in water. She lives the life of a superstar at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, where huge crowds have massed – but the chances of spotting her relatives in the wild are slim.

Pygmy hippos (Choeropsis liberiensis) are endangered and estimated to number fewer than 2,500. Their decline has been drastic: a long-term survey in a national park in Ivory Coast found 12,000 pygmy hippos in 1982; 5,000 in 1997 and 2,000 in 2011. Dugong deaths rise in Thailand, as seagrass sources dwindle

Thailand has witnessed a concerning rise in dugong deaths, with eight found dead this month alone. Three of these deaths are believed to be due to the deterioration of seagrass, a crucial food source for these gentle marine mammals.

Trade agreements fuel growth in Thai agricultural exports

Thailand’s agricultural exports grew by 8% year on year in the first eight months of 2024, valued at $19.826 billion, the Department of International Trade Negotiations said. Of the total, 69% of exports were to countries with whom Thailand has free trade agreements, amounting to $13.774 billion (430 billion baht), department Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said.

PM2.5 pollution expected to rise in and around Bangkok this week

People living in Bangkok and its surrounding areas are being advised by the Pollution Control Department to get ready for the first wave of PM2.5 (particles that are 2.5 microns or less in diameter) in the air from Thursday until Sunday, due to the arrival of a moderate cold front from China and poor air circulation.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning about the intensifying tropical storm Trami, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall to lower northern, central, eastern, and upper southern regions, including Bangkok and its vicinity. The southern region (east coast) will experience thunderstorms in 40% of the area, with heavy rain in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. Consumer confidence index plunges to lowest in 14 months

The rising cost of living and the severe flooding in several areas of Thailand are among the reasons the consumer confidence index has once again dropped, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said on Thursday.

UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting reported that Thailand’s consumer confidence index in September stood at 55.3, dropping from 56.5 in July. The index has been falling for seven consecutive months and is now the lowest in 14 months, or since August 2023. Continued …

World Bank lowers Thailand’s GDP growth forecast from 2.8% to 2.4%

The World Bank has reduced Thailand’s GDP growth forecast for 2024 to 2.4%, while projecting that the Chinese economy will decline from 4.8% this year to 4.3% in 2025, owing to a weak property market and low consumer and investor confidence.

State revenue collection on course to hit target

The Finance Ministry is confident that revenue collection for fiscal 2024, which ended on Sept. 30, met its target as collections gradually improved, bolstered by higher contributions than expected from the Revenue Department and state-owned enterprises.

Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office, said the latest report on net revenue collection from the Finance Ministry indicates for the first 11 months of fiscal 2024 (October 2023 to August 2024), the government collected net revenue (after tax refunds) of 2.452 trillion baht, which is 17.4 billion baht or 0.7% less than the target. Approvals granted to 11 out of 14 proposals for industrial estates

Some 14 industrial estates have requested approval for setting up new estates or expanding current ones this year, expecting to support factory investment of 480 billion baht, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) said.

The authority has approved 11 industrial estates, while three others were under consideration, the authority’s director, Sumet Tangprasert, said. Thai worker killed in northern Israel
