PAT sterilizes and vaccinates over 1,500 street animals in Cha Am this year

People & Animals Thailand (PAT), an initiative under the umbrella of the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, is making strides in the battle against street animal overpopulation and the spread of rabies in the region.

Since the beginning of the year, PAT has treated over 1,500 animals at its state-of-the-art sterilization and vaccination clinic situated between Hua Hin and Cha Am. Continued …

Petrol prices to drop by 2.50 baht as new year gift

The deputy prime minister and minister of energy announced plans to reduce petrol prices by 2.50 baht per liter as a new year’s gift to the Thai people. The minister, Peeraphan Saleerathaviphak, also revealed the establishment of an official committee to investigate fuel pricing.

Peeraphan revealed that the Ministry of Energy is considering ways to reduce petrol prices to help the public with cost of living expenses, comparing this with previous reductions in diesel prices. He highlighted that the idea is to offer a new year’s gift to the people of Thailand. Continued …

Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

According to an announcement made in September covering additional amendments to reducing the value-added tax (VAT) rate as per Article 80 of the Revenue Code, Thailand’s VAT rate was reduced to 6.3% on the sale of goods, provision of services, or imports, effective Oct. 1, 2017, until Sept. 30, 2024.

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. The higher cost of imports from the weak baht impacts the production costs and prices of Thai products, affecting the competitiveness of Thai exports. Continued …

Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.

Work in progress viewable at Cha Am’s Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

What to do in Hua Hin, Thailand’s easy-to-reach city by the sea

Thailand’s historic coastal resort city Hua Hin is going through something of a renaissance. Reasons to visit include a flurry of new hotels and a new second railway line, which is due to be completed next year and will slash journey times between Hua Hin and Bangkok to just two hours. The Department of Medical Services (DMS) has unveiled its 13 Quick Win strategy, led by the director-general’s representative, Amporn Benjaphonpitak. Two Thai elephants born through artificial insemination

Among the more than 4,000 elephants in Thailand, two hold a special honor: both were born using artificial insemination in a bid to protect the species and maintain the country’s biodiversity.

According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation as of March 9 this year, between 4,013 and 4,422 elephants lived in 91 national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and non-hunting areas across Thailand. The Thai government is working to identify pilot locations for a trial of late-night closing for the country’s nightlife. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says his office is liaising with related parties to find locations where entertainment venues would be allowed to remain open until 4 am.

Ministry allots Bt600 million for tourism promotions

The Tourism and Sports Ministry plans to use 600 million baht from its central budget to promote the tourism industry during the high season, as fiscal 2024 budget disbursement is expected to be delayed until April next year.

Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol said the proposed budget will be allocated to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) for their promotions, starting from the fourth quarter this year through to the first quarter of 2024. Continued …

New Mediterranean restaurant opens in Hua Hin

Gregal, a beachfront Mediterranean restaurant, has opened in Hua Hin. The restaurant is located beside The Royal Princess Condominium Hua Hin. The menu includes vegetarian options to meat, fish, and seafood delicacies, as well as pasta and paella. Gregal currently is operating under soft opening hours from 12 pm to 6 pm, except Tuesday. Wine tax in Thailand: A Protectionist Barrier?

Why is wine tax in Thailand 250% on average? In most cases, duties constitute a state’s first protection against products imported from other countries in direct competition with local production.

Does Thailand produce wine? Yes, local production is around one million liters per year and is based in three areas of the country: Loei, Hua Hin and Khao Yai. The projects are relatively recent, and the quality of the wine produced is rather low, with a high price. Electric prices lowered, but how long can subsidies last?

The national oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc has agreed to delay accepting payments of 8-9 billion baht for the gas it sells to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to help the government reduce power bills for the rest of this year. Gas makes up around 60% of the fuel used for power generation in Thailand.

To tame aggressive electricity prices, the Srettha Thavisin cabinet resolved last month to reduce the power tariff to 3.99 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), from 4.45 baht, but this increases the financial burden on EGAT, which needs part of the power tariff to help it settle a huge loss. Continued …

Football players from all over the province will be traveling to Hua Hin to compete in the Orchid Palm Homes Cup VIII on Oct. 29. Six teams have signed up, with clubs making the journey from Pranburi, Bang Saphan and Thap Sakae.

Families of those who died in mall shooting to get Bt6.2 million compensation each

The families of the two people who were killed in the Siam Paragon shooting will each receive 6.2 million baht in compensation from the Thai government and the mall’s owners, while the injured will each receive 350,000 baht each.

The Thai Revenue Department has explained more about the taxation of income overseas, which will affect both some foreigners and some Thai people.

The basic idea is, that when money is transferred into Thailand it should be taxed in Thailand if it is income. If the income has been received in another country and later within the same tax year is being transferred to the taxpayer’s account in Thailand, it must be taxed in Thailand. Two dead, five wounded in Siam Paragon shooting, suspect used modified BB gun

A Chinese tourist and a woman from Myanmar were killed at Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday afternoon, by a teenager using a modified BB gun, according to Police Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the national police chief. Some media reported a third death.

PM Puts Weapon Systems Procurement On Hold

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin yesterday suspended the procurement of any weapon systems during fiscal 2024, so that, he said, the government’s annual budget could be spent for optimum use.

On Monday, Police Capt. Thongkham Phoyai, Saraburi Province, received a report that 13 14-meter-tall concrete poles with high voltage wires fell down during installation at the Ban Krua subdistrict, Ban Mo District. A giant python, almost 5 meters long and weighing 7 kilograms, caused a stir yesterday when it slithered into a noodle shop in Yala. The reptile was discovered by the shop owner, Suhayna Beeing, who immediately alerted residents of the Gunung Janoang community, sparking panic and attracting a crowd of onlookers.

Suhayna noticed the giant python hiding under a pile of goods in his shop. The shop owner’s call for help was answered by Kanob, a local farmer and president of the local charity foundation. Tourism confidence in Thailand plummets amid economic jitters

Understanding Thailand’s New Tax Directive on Foreign Income

The Revenue Department of Thailand recently issued Directive No. 161/2566, dated Sept. 15, stipulating that individuals with foreign-sourced income must include it in their tax calculations for the year they repatriate the income to Thailand. The directive takes effect from Jan. 1, 2024.

The directive is grounded in Section 41 Paragraph 2 of Thailand’s Revenue Code, which establishes the principle that tax obligations are determined by one’s residence in Thailand. According to the section, anyone residing in Thailand for at least 180 days within a tax year and generating income abroad from employment or assets must include that income when filing taxes if the money is brought into Thailand within the same tax year. UTCC cuts estimate of economic growth to 3%

Labor minister vows to raise daily minimum wage by year-end

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced on Thursday that the raising of the minimum wage would be a New Year’s gift for the labor sector, but could not confirm whether the increase would bring it up to 400 baht per day.

US dollar surge hits Asian currencies: Thai baht suffers

Asian currencies experienced a dip today, with the Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah bearing the brunt of the losses. This was mainly due to the rising strength of the U.S. dollar, bolstered by robust economic indicators and the threat of inflation from the Federal Reserve, which have pushed U.S. bond yields to a 16-year peak.

The Thai Meteorological Department warned today that a tropical storm, which originated off the coast of Vietnam, is moving toward Thailand and will bring heavy to very heavy rain across the country.

Flu spike prompts warning

The Public Health Ministry is warning that many respiratory diseases are spreading during the rainy season, especially influenza, with a higher patient rate than last year, said Dr. Opas Kankawinpong, the ministry’s permanent secretary.

A prominent activist and lawyer made famous for his open calls for reform of Thailand’s powerful monarchy was today sentenced to four years in prison for royal insults, a judge and his lawyer said.

Thai Woman Killed, Foreign Man Missing, After Apparently Being Struck by Speedboat

A young Thai woman was killed and an unidentified foreign man was missing after apparently being struck by a speedboat while swimming off of Koh Larn last night at sunset.

The tragic incident took place around 4pm off of Tian Beach on Koh Larn. Witnesses stated a young Thai woman and a foreign man went swimming together when a speedboat seemingly delivering tourists nearby allegedly went into the swimming area and struck at least the woman. Cyber police searched the house of Deputy National Police Chief Surachate Hakparn, nicknamed Big Joke, after seven officers in his team were rounded up on the charges of involvement in running online gambling websites but did not find incriminating evidence.

Yesterday’s search followed raids of 30 locations in six provinces – Phetchaburi, Samut Prakan, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Saraburi and Bangkok – where 11 online gambling suspects were arrested, among them seven police officers. Continued …

Even during rainy season, Korat water supplies ‘alarmingly low’

The amount of usable water across 27 medium-sized reservoirs across the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima has dropped to alarmingly low levels despite the rainy season, raising fears of an impending drought, according to a provincial irrigation office official.

As a result of the prolonged drought that preceded the arrival of this year’s monsoon rain, water levels across the province’s 27 medium-sized reservoirs have dropped to about 38%, or about 441 million cubic meters. Continued …

The Pheu Thai-led government’s digital wallet policy will likely not be funded by any financial sources other than the Government Savings Bank, said Move Forward MP Sirikanya Tansakul yesterday.

Thai exports unexpectedly rose for the first time in 11 months in August, helped by higher shipments of agricultural and industrial goods, despite weak global demand, the commerce ministry said today.
