Phuket Scams Surge: 5,500 Victims and 413 Million Baht Lost

Phuket is witnessing an alarming rise in financial fraud, with over 5,500 individuals falling victim to scams in the past year, resulting in cumulative losses of 413 million baht. These figures were confirmed by the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) Region 5.

There has been a sharp increase in scam activities since 2022. Last year, while there were 1,365 reported victims, who collectively lost 10.9 million baht. The numbers jumped dramatically in 2023 to 3,538 victims with 18.8 million baht in losses. By 2024, the figures skyrocketed to 5,510 victims, with financial damages amounting to 413 million baht. Clampdown on Parking: Pattaya Enforces Strict Odd-Even Rule

Pattaya officials are stepping up their efforts to curb traffic congestion and reclaim pedestrian walkways by strictly enforcing the odd-even parking rule on South Pattaya Road. Phuket eyes Bt500 billion in revenue for 2025

Phuket expects to achieve 500 billion baht in tourism revenue this year, said Sophon Suwannarat, the island’s provincial governor. He added that the resort island’s tourism revenue was deemed successful last year.

New bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Thailand has officially launched a nationwide campaign, “Stop Burning, Stop Dust,” to tackle the ongoing problem of PM2.5 air pollution. The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), aims to enforce strict bans on open burning and raise public awareness about the dangers of air pollution.

Yesterday, Saharat Wongsakulwiwat, deputy director-general of DDPM, chaired a high-level meeting at the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command Center in Bangkok, to assess the current wildfire, haze, and PM2.5 situation. Study: Biomass Burning Fuels North Thailand PM2.5 Issues

A study conducted under the ASIA-AQ project has found that most of the PM2.5 pollution affecting northern Thailand is due to biomass burning. This revelation was the product of a collaborative effort between NASA, Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), and other scientific teams.

Thailand may soon be swamped with an influx of cheap Chinese imports if the United States slaps high tariffs on Chinese goods, warns former Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai. The country must brace itself for economic turbulence, or risk being caught off guard, he warned.

Thailand saw a drop in the net booking volume of Chinese tourist arrivals between Jan. 13-20 and one week prior, according to data by the marketing technology company China Trading Desk.

ADB upgrades Thailand growth forecast, trims developing Asia’s outlook

The Asian Development Bank has upgraded Thailand’s GDP forecast for this year and kept the forecast for next year unchanged. The bank also said developing Asia is likely to grow more slowly than previously thought this year and next, and the outlook could worsen if President-elect Donald Trump makes swift changes to U.S. trade policy.

All Three Workers Found Dead in Tunnel Collapse

In a conclusion to a 126-hour rescue operation, three workers trapped inside a collapsed railway tunnel have been found dead. Rescue teams encountered numerous challenges in their efforts to recover the bodies and are now preparing to remove them from the site.

Ekarach Sriarayapong, head of the office of the governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), provided an update on the situation. Soil Indicators not Working During Phuket Landslide

The Department of Mineral Resources has confirmed soil indicators used in Phuket to detect possible landslides are not working due to a lack of budget and maintenance. The Geohazard Operation Center, part of the Department of Mineral Resources, said the soil indicator on Nark Kerd Mountain was not operational prior to the landslide incident. The reason for this was a lack of budget for maintenance.

Additionally, the soil indicator had been installed near a tree in the parking area close to the landslide’s starting point. Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt has ensured the city’s readiness as floodwaters approach, focusing on key flood defense projects. Accompanied by Deputy Gov. Wisanu Supsompol and officials from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Drainage and Sewerage Department, Chadchart recently inspected vital flood levee repairs along the Chao Phraya River in Yannawa district. Heavy monsoon rains are expected to lash 39 provinces across Thailand, with severe weather warnings issued for potential flash floods and runoff. Bangkok is also bracing for significant rainfall, with 70% of the area anticipated to be affected.

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms will cover 60% of the area, mostly in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Some Reasons Not to Panic About a Thai Demographic Collapse

China’s demographics alone – even if you ignore its increasing marginalization from global trade, its dependency on food and energy imports, and President Xi Jinping’s utter gutting of the bureaucracy of anyone who might bring him accurate but unwelcome news – could collapse its economy in the coming decades. Between now and 2050, by conservative estimates, its working-age population will shrink by 220 million people, around a fifth.

In 2023, Thailand saw one of the worst drops in FDI in the world

Foreign direct investment (FDI), a key barometer for economic growth for developing countries, has seen a decline of about 2% in 2023, with Thailand’s share of FDI inflow declining among the highest in the world, according to latest data released by United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD), with ASEAN continuing to remain in the positive trajectory witnessing a 1.2% uptick in its FDI to US$ 226.3 billion.

UNCTAD, in a report released recently, said that global FDI in 2023 decreased marginally, by 2%, to $1.3 trillion. This headline figure was affected by wild swings in financial flows through a small number of European conduit economies; excluding the effect of these conduits, global FDI flows were more than 10% lower than in 2022. Pickup truck loan defaults surge 39% in May

The National Credit Bureau (NCB) reported a significant 39% increase in bad debt for pickup truck loans in May, highlighting an alarming trend in the auto finance sector.

A senior Thai civil servant at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the last week has brought home the significance of the crucial visa changes ushered in on July 15. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is calling on the government to lay down new measures to support industries affected by sluggish exports. FTI chief Kriengkrai Thiennukul said businesses need urgent support because many have cut down working hours to prevent closure.

Thailand’s sustained economic recovery pushes up energy consumption

Thailand’s energy consumption rose by 3.8% in the first four months of this year, thanks to a sustained economic recovery following the easing of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thailand’s tourism confidence slides amid global economy concerns

Tourist forecast dips to 25 million for the year

Hua Hin wants ‘cultural traditions’ observed during Songkran

Hua Hin has released guidelines for 2023 Songkran activities, with the aim to focus on cultural values and traditions under the concept of “continuing the Thai way of Songkran, joining the heart to the world”.

Appropriate traditional activities include cleaning houses, temples and public places, making merit, offering alms to monks, practicing Dharma, listening to sermons, pouring water on Buddha images and offering blessings to the elderly.

The public also is requested to wear traditional Thai dress during participation in activities to create an awareness of the Thai identity to foreigners.

600-passenger cruise ship might dock in Hua Hin in May

The MV Europa, a Maltese-registered luxury cruise liner, has recently requested permission to dock near Hua Hin and allow its 600 passengers to disembark.

Swedish man sentenced to prison for running child porn network in Thailand

A 23-year-old Swedish man who controlled a network of underage girls in Thailand into sending pornographic pictures and videos of themselves from his parent’s home in Stockholm has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison. The material was sold to thousands of people via social media.

The Thai central bank raised interest rates on Wednesday even with inflation coming in at only 3.8% for February. The country’s economic ministries, in the meantime, have prioritized the promotion of Thai exports against a backdrop of a more risk-averse world banking system, higher borrowing rates and reduced demand.

Western slowdown to weigh on Thai production

Thai exports are likely to be indirectly affected by banking problems in the U.S. and Europe, slowing an already sluggish sector and causing a drop in the Manufacturing Production Index (MPI), according to the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

Dutch beer brand Heineken is committed to pursuing sustainable brewing and clean energy as part of its business priorities over the long term.

Solar panels are installed at TAP’s brewery in Nonthaburi, covering an area of four acres, equivalent to two football fields. When fully operational, the solar farm can generate 30% of the electricity required for the brewhouse.

Thailand’s Long and Bumpy Road to Nuclear Energy Adoption

In many respects, Thailand is an extremely fortunate nation. It is located in the heart of Southeast Asia, with no threat of food shortages, no major state or non-state enemies, and no severe risks of natural disasters (this point, though, is debatable as Thailand is said to be one of the top 10 countries in the world most impacted by climate change). But when it comes to energy security, Thais should be concerned.

Thailand is, after all, a net importer of oil and natural gas, and its existing reserves – most notably the one in the Gulf of Thailand – are running low. Chiang Mai tour operators concerned over pollution, bookings down 50%

Tour operators in Chiang Mai raised concerns after the latest tourism figures revealed bookings were down 50% after the popular tourist destination was ranked the world’s most polluted city. But that’s not all, respiratory diseases in the province continue to rise.

The air quality index produced by Swiss company IQAir revealed that Chiang Mai had a reading of 216 at noon yesterday, which is considered “very unhealthy.” Anything above 51 is a cause for concern. Foreign ‘tour guides’ taking jobs that are reserved for Thais

The caretaker Thai PM, Prayut Chan-o-cha, has ordered strict legal action against foreigners who are working as tour guides, which is a profession exclusively reserved for Thai nationals.

This announcement came after several complaints were filed, citing violation of the executive decree of 2017. According to government deputy spokeswoman Traisuree Taisarakul, the law clearly states that foreigners cannot work without a permit or fill jobs reserved for Thai citizens, including tour guide positions. Q1 tourism target exceeded, but what about 45-day visa exemption?

Thailand has exceeded its target for tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2023, with a total of 6.15 million visitors from January to March 27. The government had initially aimed for 6 million arrivals during this period.

The numbers coincide with the government’s extension of the usual 30-day visa waiver (for 64 countries) to 45 days. The extension was valid between the start of October, 2022, and March 31, 2023. No announcements have since been made to extend the 45-day visa waiver beyond the end of March, although both the Thai Tourism and Sports Ministers and the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand have expressed their interest in proposing an extension. Late in the morning, my caffeine-dependent friends and I made a pit stop at the newly opened Pua Tobacco Barn Café & Eatery to refuel before leaving the popular town of Pua, close to the Xienghone-Hongsa special economic zone between Nan and Laos.
