Thai Commitee Report Exposes 10 Corrupt State Agencies

Thailand’s Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) and the Zero Corruption Organization have identified the top 10 most corrupt state agencies, highlighting serious bribery issues.

Several state agencies have refuted allegations of corruption and launched internal investigations after a business sector survey identifying high bribery risks prompted the government to pledge sweeping anti-graft reforms.

A British traveler was left facing medical costs of around GBP23,000 after suffering serious injuries in a motorbike crash just six days into a planned two-month trip to Thailand. Jude O’Connor required urgent surgery after another rider reportedly pulled out in front of him, throwing him into a parked car.

In Thailand, burned sugarcane plantations become traps for leopard cat cubs

Nuntita Ruksachat, head veterinarian at the Khon Kaen wildlife rescue center in northeastern Thailand, holds up a feline cub no larger than her hand. Part of a litter rescued just days ago, the cub’s fur is patchy, revealing blistered skin underneath. Its whiskers, clearly singed, are short and stubby.

“They were rescued from a burned sugarcane plantation,” she says. Behind her, cats pace inside rows of cages. More than 50 leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) cubs are currently housed at the rescue center, which is run by Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation’s (DNP). Norwegian Salmon Mania in Thailand Keeps Growing

Thais love salmon and saba, which may be an understatement. The exports of fresh Norwegian salmon, mackerel (saba), and fjord trout to Thailand continues to grow, with a 12% growth in 2024, according to Ashild Nakken, Norwegian Seafood Council’s director for Southeast Asia yesterday. Nakken added as for 2025, so far, the exports of salmon and fjord trout have risen “by an impressive 18 percent.”

Consumer confidence drops for third month in a row

The consumer confidence index (CCI) dropped for a third consecutive month in April to hit its lowest level in seven months, attributed to concerns over U.S. tariffs, falling agricultural product prices, and political uncertainties. The CCI decreased from 56.7 in March to 55.4 in April, according to the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at 9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

Persistent rain has caused flooding 20-40 centimeters deep in Cha Am district of Phetchaburi and Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan, and on nearby sections of the Phetkasem Highway.

A team of Department of Special Investigation (DSI) police, together with Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) officials, raided houses and commercial buildings at several locations across Kanchanaburi that had been turned into Bitcoin mining dens and effectively stolen over 100 million baht in electricity annually.

Finance Ministry calls for weaker baht, wants 2024 rate cut

The Ministry of Finance ratcheted up pressure on the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to cut interest rates to boost the economy and weaken the baht, just a day after an influential former governor warned against government meddling in the central bank.
