The Board of Investmens (BOI) has approved measures to promote investment to address the issue of PM2.5 particulate pollution, according to the organization’s secretary-general, Narit Therdsteerasukdi.

The measures involve expanding the scope of support through investment promotion measures for community and social development. It encompasses support for local organizations and groups of farmers to enhance environmental standards in communities. This would include forest management in targeted areas, including community forests, conservation forests, and national forest reserves, in order to alleviate the nationwide issue of PM2.5 particulate pollution. Six tour boats and a fishing vessel have sunk in the Gulf and the Andaman Sea in the past four days. Two passengers, a skipper and five crew are still missing.

Seventy Three Tourists Rescued after Speedboat Capsized in Satun

A tourist speedboat capsized near Bubu Island, about 3 kilometers from Satun’s Lipe Island, Sunday. The boat carried 73 tourists, including three children and four crew members.

Ministries to clamp down on crop burning as pollution levels rise

In a move to fight air pollution, the ministries of Natural Resources and Environment, and Agriculture and Cooperatives jointly declared war on crop burning, vowing to crack down on one of the main sources of PM2.5 fine dust.

PM2.5 is fine particulate matter that is 2.5 microns or less in diameter and can be inhaled, boosting the risk of health problems like heart disease and asthma. Continued …

Some 11 urgent measures were unveiled by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Tuesday to address the PM2.5 smog problem, with a focus on quickly adjusting actions to ensure effective results.

The driver of a bus that crashed in Prachuap Khiri Khan, killing 15 people, has confessed to falling asleep at the wheel, leading to a charge of reckless driving.

Thai wage committee upholds 2.37% minimum wage increase

Yesterday, a senior government official announced that the tripartite wage committee has decided to uphold their previously agreed-upon plan to increase the average daily minimum wage by 2.37%.

The Thai cabinet on Tuesday finally shelved the long-running plan for a foreign tourism levy. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, however, rejected a stop-gap measure to replace it. WFFT rescues 15 big cats from northern Thailand facility

Twelve tigers and three leopards who have spent their lives in captivity have been rescued from a tiger farm in Thailand.

The undisclosed captive tiger facility in northern Thailand was visited by government officials on Dec. 16 following legal action over alleged illegal wildlife trading. Veterinary teams and wildlife experts from Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) were on hand to rescue the seized animals, in the first part of the largest tiger rescue operation by an NGO in Thailand’s history. The National Statistical Office of Thailand (NSO) is urging the government to further promote basic rights, social security and labor protection for workers in the informal sector, citing 2023 statistics that show that more than half of Thailand’s workforce (52.3%), or some 21 million people, are informal workers.

Thai income tax worries spark interest in 10-year visa

Concerns about Thailand’s intention to tax foreign income from January 2024 has created a new market for Thailand’s long-term resident (LTR) visa. That’s because those who obtain the 10-year LTR are exempted from paying personal income tax on foreign assets or earnings. The new rules apply to all native and foreign residents of Thailand who spend six months or more here in a year.

The Board of Investment, which controls the LTR, says about 3,000 such visas were issued since the launch in 2022, but the publicity surrounding the new tax regulation has seen a 14% rise in applications. Continued …

Most Thais are worried about the impact of PM2.5 air pollution, an opinion poll conducted by Suan Dusit University found.

Uptick in COVID-19 infections is seasonal, will drop in February

Telco regulator asked to review True’s service charges and quality

Four members of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), Thailand’s broadcast and telecom regulator, have proposed that the commission consider the service charges and quality of True Corp. after the successful merger of Total Access Communications Co. (DTAC) and True Corp. (TRUE) in March this year.

The Energy Business Department will seek Cabinet endorsement for discontinuing the sale of B10 diesel oil, leaving only B7 and B20 oil options available, the department’s chief said.

Thai economy poised for growth in 2024, fueled by tourism and exports

People want single minimum wage for the whole country

Most respondents to a recent opinion poll want one minimum wage rate to be applied across the country, instead of several rates, and that the Bt2-16 wage increase proposed by the Wage Committee is too low, according to the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA).

A recent report from the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) revealed that efforts to address poverty and inequality in Thailand have not been entirely successful. Foreigners Purchase 10,703 Condo Units in Thailand This Year

Vichai Wiratkapan, acting director of the Real Estate Information Center (REIC), said that in the third quarter of 2023 the number of condominiums in Thailand transferred to foreigners was 3,365, an increase of 0.4%.

The National Energy Policy Council (NEPC), in its recent meeting, moved to limit the power tariff for households consuming not more than 300 units a month at the existing rate of 3.99 baht per unit, an insider familiar with the meeting discussions revealed.

The air pollution crisis in Thailand, specifically the hazardous PM2.5 particles, presents a formidable challenge to new Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his cabinet. This issue transcends mere environmental concerns, morphing into a litmus test for the government’s commitment to public health and its willingness to confront entrenched industrial and agricultural interests.

PM2.5 particles are fine particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter.
