British man commits suicide in Cha Am, leaving sand messages for Thai wife

A British man left messages in the sand for his wife and children before taking his own life on Cha Am Beach in the southern province of Phetchaburi. He was reportedly distressed over two legal cases and a 400,000-baht loss to a friend.

A Thai tourist discovered the lifeless body of the British man, later identified as 42-year-old Antony Gerrard Kelly, at an abandoned beachfront pavilion on Cha Am Beach yesterday. Kelly was found hanging in the pavilion. Continued …

120 arrested in underwear at Bangkok hotel party

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

In the room, police found 124 Thai and foreign men, described as gay, in their underwear, along with a few women and some ecstasy and ketamine. Continued …

British man’s Thai-high trip goes up in smoke at Manchester customs

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. While Sohail insisted he had been on an indulgent eight-day jaunt in Bangkok, a scan revealed his luggage contained not just holiday mementoes but 40 kilograms of the class B drug. Continued …

Thai businesses call for huge stimulus

The business sector is calling for multiple government stimulus measures, especially tax incentives and a household debt reduction scheme, to revive the economy and give the public a New Year’s gift.

Increase in unemployment likely in early 2025, expert says

Need for homes for elderly rises as Thailand becomes aged society

Demand for nursing homes and residences for the elderly has surged as Thailand has entered an aged society, according to results of a survey by the Real Estate Information Center (REIC) released on Sunday.

In Thailand, the number of people aged above 60 years accounts for 20% of the population. The aged population is expected to increase by 4.89% annually. Over 56% of Thais expect to travel during the New Year holidays

A majority of survey respondents planned to travel during the New Year, of whom over 90% are opting for domestic trips, according to a nationwide Dusit Poll by Suan Dusit University.

Chinese visitors to Thailand between January-November top 6 million

Foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1 this year reached 32,020,169 visitors, generating approximately 1.5 trillion baht in revenue, the Tourism and Sports ministry reported last week.

China ranked as the top source of tourists with 6,214,226 visitors, followed by Malaysia (4,506,898), India (1,915,152), South Korea (1,685,600), and Russia (1,503,312). The construction incident on Rama II Road has claimed the lives of six people, as rescue and recovery efforts are expected to take two to three days. Authorities have temporarily closed the road and diverted traffic and advised motorists to avoid the area.

Samut Sakhon Gov. Narit Niramaivong and other key officials, including Lt. Col. Santhiti Thammajai from the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, inspected the site. “Our priority is clearing the debris and restoring traffic on this vital route, which serves many commuters,” said Narit. A recent survey found that nearly 200,000 cats and dogs live in the capital, including about 29,000 strays – over 9,000 dogs and 19,900 cats. The Thai Cabinet has acknowledged a proposal to adjust the starting salaries for new civil service recruits, with a bachelor’s degree holder earning no less than 18,000 baht and a vocational certificate holder receiving a minimum of 11,000 baht. German Developer Among 16 Charged in Samui in Thai nominee case

Police have charged 16 individuals, including a German national and several Thai nominees, in connection with an illegal luxury villa development scheme on Koh Samui island, Thailand’s Police Region 8 Commander Surapong Thanomchit announced yesterday.

The investigation began when Koh Samui municipal officials and the Office of the Ombudsman discovered 15 unauthorized building plots on hillside land during an inspection in February. Hua Hin Expat News yesterday listened in on an online webinar regarding the new tax on expat income to be implmented in Thailand next year. There is a great deal of confusion on this subject and the group presenting the webinar has researched how it affects expats from a number of countries.

NHSO clarifies ‘Cancer Anywhere’ program under the Universal Health Coverage funding rules

Nissan Motor will cut or transfer about 1,000 jobs in Thailand as it shrinks production in Southeast Asia, part of its recently announced global workforce reduction plan, two sources familiar with the matter said Friday.

Taiwan’s Foxconn may take lead in Thai EV venture

Thailand’s Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax

Tax expert Thomas Carden has advised expatriates residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in 2024 to obtain a tax identification number from the Thai Revenue Department (TRD). Carden emphasized the need for expatriates to register and submit tax forms by the first quarter of 2025, even if they believe they owe no tax.

Carden clarified that only overseas income transferred to Thailand is relevant for taxation. Issues like pre-taxed pensions and double taxation treaties should also be considered. Continued …

Ministry to ease blow of fuel subsidy ending

The Energy Ministry is planning to launch measures to soften the impact of expiring biofuel price subsidies in 2027, as the fuels become more expensive, affecting palm and sugar cane growers.

Record Loy Krathong spending won’t offset economic problems

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that while spending during the Loy Krathong festival is expected to exceed 10 billion baht, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the economy.

Thailand’s digital economy continues to record strong double-digit growth, fueled by the rise of e-commerce, particularly video commerce and online travel services. In 2024, the country’s digital economy is expected to grow 19% over last year to US$46 billion on the basis of gross merchandise value (GMV).

A day at Khao Kheow Zoo

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

To ease gridlock and provide convenience, the zoo has implemented an online ticketing system, but things did not appear to go as planned. Meanwhile, the head of Protected Area Regional Office 8 has filed a police report at Phu Ruea Police Station, urging swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Authorities yesterday discovered the body of a tuskless adult male wild elephant, known as a “Si Dor,” in the Nam Rin stream in Ban Song Khon, Pla Ba subdistrict, Phu Ruea district. Thai Rice Exports Surge 22% in First 9 Months

Thailand exported 7,448,941 tons of rice worth 172.019 billion baht in the first nine months of 2024 (January-September), an increase of 22% in volume and 45.8% in value compared to the same period in 2023, according to Charoen Laothamatas, president of the Rice Exporters Association of Thailand.

He stated that white rice led exports with 4,702,455 tons (up 42%), followed by jasmine rice with 1,233,108 tons (up 9%), parboiled rice with 814,791 tons (down 28.2%), Thai fragrant rice with 487,587 tons (up 42.5%) and glutinous rice with 211,000 tons (up 15.7%). Continued …

Thai Textile Society organizes Hua Hin trip

Thai Textile Society is holding a day trip to experience various forms of fiber art in Hua Hin, on Saturday. This old and well-established town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been home to the renowned Khomapastr factory, one of Thailand’s first textile printing houses, established in 1948 by His Royal Highness Prince Bovoradej and his wife Her Serene Highness Pajongchitr Kridakorn.

Participants will learn how the prince developed a passion for weaving and dying textiles while living in Saigon in the 1930s. He returned to Thailand following World War II and built with his wife a small weaving, dying and printing workshop in the sleepy resort town of Hua Hin that continues production to this day. A deadly weapon, an M16 rifle, used in the fatal shooting of former police officer has been linked to over 25 deaths in a series of violent incidents in southern Thailand.

The event unfolded when Phu-at Rasaming, the imam of Baan Nam Yen and a former police officer, was fatally shot in front of his residence in Yala province on Oct. 29. Investigations revealed that the M16 rifle and 15 spent .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges found at the scene had previously been used in numerous violent incidents, causing over 25 fatalities and many injuries since 2007. Poor’s income rises 36 baht per month in 2023

The overall monthly income of the poor rose by only 36 baht in 2023 from the previous year, while the cost of living kept rising, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) found in a recent study.

The NESDC Office announced that its study found that poor families earned an average monthly income of 11,123 baht in 2023, compared with 11,087 baht in 2022. This included non-monetary income, such freedom from home-rental expenses and the cost of food and drink. Housing prices far higher than what most Bangkokians can afford

More than half of Bangkokians find it difficult to purchase a house, as their monthly salary is less than 30,000 baht, while property prices have continued to rise, according to property developer Sena Development.

Thai exports recover in first nine months of 2024

Thailand’s exports in 2024 have shown a satisfactory recovery. For the first nine months of the year, total export value reached US$223.176 billion, marking 3.9% growth. Excluding oil, gold, and military-related products, exports grew by 4.2%.

The Ministry of Commerce expects overall export growth of about 2% for the year, with the total export value projected to reach $290 billion. However, imports have remained high. In the first nine months, Thailand’s imports amounted to $229.1328 billion, a 5.5% increase, resulting in a trade deficit of $5.9568 billion, or nearly 200 billion baht. Continued …

Foundation documents impact of plastic waste in Thailand

Thailand is facing the impact of plastic waste on greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and public health, according to a report by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF).

Chiang Mai backs waste-to-energy plant

The Thai cabinet has decided to grant Thai citizenship to about 483,000 migrants who have been living in Thailand since 1984 and children born in Thailand to parents in ethnic minority groups.

Spokesman for the prime minister’s office, Jirayu Huangsap, said that since these documented migrant workers have been working in Thailand for a long time, the cabinet feels that it is appropriate to grant them Thai citizenship, so they can travel freely and still beneficially contribute to the development of the Thai economy. Inbound tourists’ spending on Visa credit cards this year is expected to be 90% higher than the 2019 level, a higher rate than that of Thai travelers overseas, who were hampered by a sluggish economy.

AirAsia takes off with five new international routes

AirAsia is ramping up its operations toward the end of the year with the launch of five new international routes. These include two routes from Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport to Hyderabad, India, and Phu Quoc, Vietnam, and three routes from Phuket to Kolkata and Chennai in India, and Siem Reap, Cambodia.

ASEAN trio agree on clean air initiative

South Thailand braces for downpour

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning, highlighting light rain in Bangkok and its vicinity, the central region, and the east, while the south braces for heavy rainfall affecting 60% of the area.

In the southern region, the eastern coast will see thunderstorms affecting 60% of the area, mainly in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, and Yala. Violence erupts in Deep South as deadline on Tak Bai case nears

Three violent attacks were carried out in Pattani and Narathiwat Wednesday evening and early Thursday in what are suspected to be symbolic attacks related to the Tak Bai massacre case, the statute of limitations on which is due to expire today.

The first attack happened in Tambon Chalerm of Narathiwat’s Rangae district on Wednesday evening. Police said three patrol troops were injured when insurgents detonated a homemade bomb planted in a drainage sewer under the road between Ban Kujing Luepah and Ban Bango Luhboh villages. Continued …

Tak Bai massacre families left without justice as charge deadline expires

Khalijah Musa was just 12 years old when her brother Sari was stuffed into a Thai army truck, hands bound, joining a pile of arrested protesters who all suffocated to death.

Twenty years after the Oct, 25, 2004, tragedy, known as the “Tak Bai massacre”, Musa and the other relatives of the 78 victims are mourning the fact that the killers will never be brought to justice. Chinese-grown Shine Muscat grapes contaminated with dangerous chemicals

Shine Muscat grapes imported from China have been found to be heavily laced with dangerous chemicals, including chlorpyrifos, the Thai Pesticides Alert Network (Thai-Pan) and the Foundation for Consumers announced.

The two consumer protection organizations recently conducted laboratory tests on 24 samples of the juicy and popular grapes purchased from retail outlets, vendors and wet markets. Nine samples were imported from China, while the remaining 15 samples were imported from unknown sources. Continued …

Thailand’s gold prices take a dive

Gold prices have taken a nosedive in Thailand, with gold ornaments now pegged at 44,100 baht per baht weight. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reports a 300-baht drop from yesterday, putting an end to the recent upward streak.

As of this morning, gold bullion is fetching 43,500 baht to buy and 43,600 baht to sell per baht weight. Meanwhile, 96.5% purity gold ornaments are being snapped up for 42,720.88 baht but hitting the market at 44,100 baht. Continued …

Phuket cannabis shop owner finds thieves for a taste of revenge

One of the cannabis shop owners in Phuket who fell victim to two foreign thieves, yesterday tracked down the suspects and physically assaulted them at their accommodation.

Several cannabis shop owners in Phuket reached out to other vendors to warn them after losing products to the two foreign thieves, whose identities remain undisclosed. CCTV footage from some of the ganja shops showed the thieves stealing entire jars of products from each shop. Continued …

Thai poverty levels decreased in 2023

A total of 2.39 million Thais were classified as poor in 2023, a significant decrease from the previous year of 3.79 million people, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its latest report on Thailand’s poverty and disparity situation. The percentage of the poor population in Thailand also went down from 5.4% in 2022 to 3.4% in 2023, the NESDC reported.

The council attributed the decrease in the poor to continued economic expansion, especially in the agricultural sector, which has the highest percentage of low-income workers. It added that the government’s state welfare card scheme in 2023 accepted applications from those who had missed the application deadlines in the previous rounds, allowing more people to gain access to state-funded services and benefits. Thailand’s vehicle production hits the brakes

The automotive industry in Thailand has experienced a significant downturn in vehicle production, with September seeing a total of 122,277 units produced, marking a 25.5% decrease from the same period last year.

This decline reflects a 15.8% reduction in vehicles manufactured for export, totalling 87,666 units, and a 42.3% drop in vehicles produced for domestic sales, amounting to 34,611 units. Continued …

Finance Ministry unveils 2025 state welfare card for low-income boost

The Ministry of Finance has rolled out new registrations for the 2025 state welfare card, aiming to wrap up all the eligibility checks by March 31 next year. A fresh round of financial lifelines is coming with 1,545 baht heading straight into the pockets of those who qualify.

It was confirmed today by Deputy Minister of Finance Chulapan Amornvivat that the new registration phase is a go. Following the Cabinet’s orders, the welfare card database gets a facelift every two years, setting the stage for new applications in early 2025. Continued … 

China’s Cosco Shipping invests $110 million in Thailand terminals

Costco Shipping Ports Ltd. has acquired 12.5% and 30% ownership holdings in Thai Laem Chabang Terminal Co., (TLT) and Hutchison Laem Chabang Terminal (HLT).

ZHAO Fengnian, the chief accountant, signed the project agreement with collaborating firms at the project signing event in Vietnam on Wednesday, in the presence of ZHU Tao, the chairman of the board of Costco Shipping Ports. The consideration for the acquisition is approximately $110 million, which includes the Berth A2
in TLT, Berths A3, C1-C2 and D1-D3 in HLT, where D1-D3 is partly under construction. Continued …

As Thailand’s fruit season draws to a close this year, prices have surged across all categories, including durian, mangosteen, rambutan, longkong, and mango. Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan said the Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has been monitoring fruit production and pricing for 2024.

Bangkok housing market set to decline amid poor economy

SCB EIC, the research center of Siam Commercial Bank, predicts that the transfer of new residential units in Greater Bangkok will decline by 10% this year, with a further contraction of 1%-3% projected for 2025, mainly due to the country’s sluggish economy.
