Chiang Mai’s war on farm fires heats up
Chiang Mai Gov. Nirat Pongsitthithavorn is leading the charge against the annual curse of PM2.5 pollution caused by the burning of agricultural residue. In a teleconference with the province’s 25 district chiefs, he laid down strict instructions to tackle the issue head-on.
The provincial administration has already taken a decisive step by banning unauthorized burning of farm waste from Jan. 1 to April 30. Unexpected traffic fines surprise vehicle owners at tax renewal in Prachuap Khiri Khan
At the Department of Land Transport (DLT) in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, vehicle owners renewing their annual taxes are being hit with unexpected charges, 735,000 baht in total, for unpaid traffic fines.

New Covid JN.1 Strain Sweeping Thailand
A prominent virologist said this morning that a new Covid-19 strain, JN.1, has now taken hold in Thailand and is turning into the most widespread variant, as it is highly contagious, and this leading to a spike in the number of patients.
Dr. Yong Poovorawan, head of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, said that a test of 14 samples in December, with there being a few more to be analyzed, but the total is low because of limited budget, shows JN.1 is the most common strain. Energy board sets electricity unit price at Bt4.18
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has set the fuel tariff (FT) surcharge on electricity, for the January through April period, at 39.72 satang per unit and the electricity unit price at 4.18 baht, after adjusting the formula for the calculation of natural gas and electricity prices.
Komkrit Tantravanich, secretary-general of the office of the ERC, said today that, in setting these FT and electricity unit prices, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Thailand’s major power producer, will have to bear the loss, estimated at 15 billion baht, for the 4-month period. Draft bill on cannabis control not finished
The drafting of the new cannabis and hemp control bill is still not complete and it has not yet been forwarded to the cabinet for approval, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Wednesday.

Forty-eight of the 77 provinces were blanketed in unsafe levels of ultra-fine dust this morning, 21 of them reporting red-level air pollution.
The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) at 9am reported red levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.9 to 145.2 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the previous 24 hours. Continued …

A Ukrainian man drowned near Bailan Beach on the island of Koh Chang in the eastern province of Trat. He reportedly tried to swim from Koh Chang to Koh Man Nai after an argument with his family.
Locals discovered the dead body near Bailan Beach in the Koh Chang Tai subdistrict, on Koh Chang at around 2pm yesterday, and reported the matter to the village chief, Termsak Sertsri. Foreigner Filmed Urinating Off the Back of TukTuk in Phuket
A video clip of a foreign man who was standing and urinating on the back of a tuk tuk in Patong has gone viral on social media this week, causing outrage and anger from many Thai social media users who demanded the foreigner be arrested and charged to the fullest extent of the law.

In Thailand, it’s very easy to encounter an elephant. Some sites allow quiet observation, as you admire the massive animals from afar. Other tourist venues offer activities like feeding, riding, or bathing with elephants. Many places toss around the term “ethical” when describing the encounters, but they often are not the sanctuaries they promote.
(Editor note: Expat News visited the Elephant Nature Park outside of Chiang Mai, and we have to dispute one warning about not physically interacting with the elephants. Unlike some “sanctuaries”, where the elephants are basically penned in – or chained or caged, pachyderms at Elephant Nature Park mostly are allowed to roam free in the mountainous jungles of the park and visitors are allowed to mingle with them for bathing, feeding and walks. These are rescued elephants and their young, and as long as there is no riding of the elephants, we see no problem with this activity.)

Thailand is currently experiencing the “season of dust” and PM2.5 readings are expected to reach unsafe levels between Friday and Jan. 12, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) has warned. The warning came due to poor air circulation, resulting in dust accumulation.

The Phuket Regional Harbor Office received a report of a marine accident at 3:30 pm on Dec. 31 from the Andaman Marine Traffic and Safety Control Center, stating that a speedboat carrying seven passengers, the captain and one crew member, totaling nine people, had crashed into the rocks on the shore of Mai Thon Island, Chalong subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District, Phuket Province.

Hua Hin’s long journey toward a fully functioning, modern airport has reached yet another juncture with the latest updates on its ongoing upgrades.
The long-standing issue of the airport’s inability to accommodate larger aircraft such as the A320, which seats up to 180 passengers, remains a significant hurdle. Police raids in response to murder plot linked with Bt1 billion family business concern
Thai police on Friday morning cut the head off a dangerous plot that was already in motion to murder a businessman, his mother and their lawyer. The suspected mastermind behind the diabolical scheme, however, turned out to be the man’s father and the woman’s estranged husband.
Police with the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) were alerted to the plot in November linked to a substantial business dispute. The matter became urgent in recent days when investigators detected three hit men pursuing the target while traveling in Bangkok. House says yes to marriage equality
The House’s approval of all four bills seeking to amend the Civil and Commercial Code to allow same-sex marriages in the country during their first reading has received positive responses from members of society, according to government spokesman Chai Watcharonke.

(PTTEP) has received the International Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice 2023 in the environmental improvement category with gold level from the green organization, for the PTTEP reforestation project. Rice is Thailand’s most important food crop and an integral part of Thai culture and society. At the same time, rice farmers remain among the poorest occupational groups in Thailand and are extremely vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate — rice farming is a water-intensive and temperature-sensitive activity conducted in a climate that is becoming increasingly characterized by longer dry spells and higher temperatures.
In addition, rice farming is a significant source of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change, particularly methane: about half of Thailand’s agricultural emissions come from rice farming, according to the Thai Biennial Update Report to the UN. Continued …

Time for dithering on tourist insurance to stop
The Thai cabinet on Tuesday finally shelved the long-running plan for a foreign tourism levy. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, however, rejected a stop-gap measure to replace it. He ordered the introduction of automatic insurance cover for all foreign tourists to be provided through the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

The Cabinet has resolved to cap the price of diesel and electricity for households in a bid to ease people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.
Srettha, who also doubles as finance minister, said under the measure proposed by the Energy Ministry, diesel will be retailed at no more than 30 baht per liter for three months, while the price of electricity for households using less than 300 units per month will be capped at no more than 4.2 baht per unit. Car production in Thailand declined 14.1% in November from a year earlier to 163,337 units, on weaker production of pickup trucks and last year’s high base, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said yesterday.
