Five Hua Hin hotels, 66 other Thai hotels awarded Michelin Keys

The Michelin Guide’s Thai Key selection has grown to 71 hotels and resorts for 2026, including six properties awarded the highest distinction of three Keys. Fourhotels in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chiva-som in Hua Hin were recognized with keys, including: Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa, V Villas Hua Hin, Aleenta Resort & Spa, Hua-Hin, and Devasom Hua Hin.

JKN Universe LLC said in a statement issued by the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) that delegates from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore would be ineligible to compete in the 75th Miss Universe pageant in 2026.

The statement maintained that Miss Universe Eastern Pte. Ltd. had no authority to grant, transfer or issue licenses for the Miss Universe brand and that all legal authority rested with JKN Universe LLC. Continued … 

Thai official insists Thailand and five nations will compete at Miss Universe

Nawat Itsaragrisil, chief executive of Miss Universe Eastern, has rejected a move to exclude Thailand and five other Southeast Asian countries from Miss Universe 2026, insisting that their delegates, including Thailand’s Tharina Botes, remain entitled to compete in Puerto Rico.

His comments came after a statement issued in the name of the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) said franchise agreements involving Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore were not recognized by JKN Universe LLC and that their delegates would therefore be ineligible for the 75th Miss Universe pageant. Bangkok 45-baht rail fare cap planned for January

Bangkok authorities are preparing a shared rail fare system that would limit the maximum charge to 45 baht per trip across the capital and surrounding areas from Jan. 1.The plan would remove duplicate entry fees for passengers changing between rail lines.

Two dead, 16 hurt in Narathiwat volunteer convoy attack

Two members of Sukhirin’s territorial defense volunteer force were killed and 16 were injured in a roadside bombing and gun attack in Narathiwat province yesterday.

World Bank’s FY2027–2032 Thailand plan targets jobs in four sectors

The World Bank Group’s board of executive directors has discussed a new country partnership framework (CPF) for Thailand for fiscal years 2027–2032, aimed at accelerating economic growth and job creation, while improving competitiveness and strengthening the economy’s ability to withstand disruption.

Building on more than 75 years of cooperation with Thailand, the framework will combine knowledge and support for reform with selective public-sector financing and efforts to encourage private investment. Fitch upgrades Thailand outlook to ‘stable’

Fitch Ratings has revised Thailand’s outlook to “stable” from “negative”, ‌citing increased confidence that government debt will broadly stabilize over the medium term and that political conditions will improve following the general elections held⁠earlier this year.

Government moving to fully relocate Bangkok port to Laem Chabang

Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn confirmed the government’s goal to fully cease operations of Bangkok port in Klong Toei and shift them to Laem Chabang if this is feasible, so as to allow for commercial development of the area, thereby generating far more revenue for the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) than is currently possible.

However, if it becomes necessary to retain certain operations — such as the transport of fresh food or fruit requiring rapid handling — each case will be studied individually. PAT management has been instructed to review the original intent behind the construction of Laem Chabang port to determine whether it was built to consolidate all transport operations or only alleviate the burden on Bangkok port. Thailand’s liberal gold regime at risk

There is no currently established gold transaction tax rate in Thailand. While the Finance Ministry and the Bank of Thailand have been studying the possibility of imposing taxes on gold imports and domestic trading to curb money laundering and gray capital, no such tax has been implemented..

The proposal to introduce a gold transaction tax is intended to increase visibility into transactions to prevent illicit funds, rather than to generate government revenue. Some discussions have suggested a potential rate of 7%, though officials have noted that even a low rate, such as 0.5%, could be significant for certain transactions. The Gold Traders Assn. has expressed opposition to such a tax, warning that it could undermine Thailand’s position as a regional gold trading hub. – Bangkok Post

Competition watchdog to beef up digital platform rules

The Trade Competition Commission of Thailand (TCCT) is targeting Shopee following allegations that the platform unfairly used its market power to dominate the e-commerce industry. Specifically, the regulator is investigating claims that Shopee allegedly coerced vendors into participating in promotions without their consent, such as the CashBack Coins and free shipping schemes.

The TCCT recently imposed an 84.3-million-baht fine on Shopee after finding the platform violated the law by automatically enrolling sellers in certain promotional programs. These programs reportedly forced vendors to accept additional service fees without their permission, which led to reduced profits and unexpected costs for those businesses.

In response to these and other complaints from e-commerce platforms regarding fee increases and changes to contract terms, the TCCT plans to strengthen digital platform regulations to address unfair competition and assess whether such fees are fair and appropriate. – Bangkok Post

AI companies confront their darkest fears

Prominent AI researchers and industry leaders have proposed several measures to slow the pace of artificial intelligence development to allow society and regulatory frameworks to catch up. These proposals include calling for a coordinated slowdown in the development of advanced models, implementing licensing regimes similar to those used in aviation or medicine, and establishing global coordination to prevent a competitive race between companies..

Specific calls for caution have come from figures such as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who have suggested that developers might need to voluntarily pause rapid advances. Additionally, more than 1,000 tech employees have petitioned the US government to help deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development.

To ensure safety, some experts advocate for the use of independent evaluators to scrutinize AI systems and the creation of joint standards bodies among major AI rivals like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. – Bangkok Post

AirAsia’s Fernandes says travel demand remains strong

AirAsia co-founder Tony Fernandes said yesterday the low-cost carrier’s challenges from soaring jet fuel costs were “far, far” less severe than those it faced during the Covid-19 pandemic, as he sought to reassure investors about⁠the airline’s financial health.

The Rise (and Rise and Rise) of the Suddenly Ubiquitous Jellyfish

On a hot, humid day in Samut Songkhram, near where the Mae Klong River meets the Gulf of Thailand, Wanlee Muensawat strolls through her factory, inspecting crates filled with flattened, dried jellyfish. More than a thousand tons of the ghostly plankton pass through her processing facility every year, scooped out of coastal waters by fishermen in the gulf and the Andaman Sea.

A little over 20 years ago, Muensawat had her doubts about starting Chockdee Sea Products. “I remember thinking, This is a very smelly business,” she says. She knew, however, there were markets for edible jellies, most prominently in China, where jellyfish are typically sliced into strips and served dressed or seasoned as a cold salad. Baby turtles make a break for it on PKK’s Koh Thalu Beach

Over 100 endangered hawksbill sea turtles hatched on Koh Thalu Beach in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Bang Saphan Noi district, marking a significant win for marine conservation efforts.

Thailand open to US role only as facilitator in Cambodia peace talks

Thailand has expressed openness to an offer from a major power to assist in its talks with Cambodia, but only in a facilitating role, not as a negotiator, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said yesterday.

Microsoft has closed the loophole that allowed users to install Windows 11 offline, now requiring an internet connection and Microsoft account login to complete setup.

Previously, users could bypass the mandatory account step by entering the command oobe\bypassnro during installation. On Sept. 29, Murray Hunter, a retired Australian researcher, was arrested in Bangkok in relation to a defamation suit filed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Hunter had lived in Malaysia for years, and was a university lecturer there until 2015, when he moved to Thailand.

In Thailand, he “continued to write about Malaysian politics and Southeast Asian issues and his “critical reports have earned the ire of Malaysian authorities. Narit Therdsteerasukdi, secretary-general of the Board of Investment (BOI), revealed that as the global economy increasingly relies on data, speed, and smart devices, printed circuit boards (PCBs) have become one of the hottest areas for investment. Thailand’s Winter Expected to Start Oct 29, Colder Than Last Year

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has announced that the 2024 winter season is set to begin on Oct. 29 and is expected to last until late February 2025. This season is anticipated to be colder than last year, with December 2024 to January 2025 marking the coldest period.

According to Dr. Sukanyaniyawinyacharn, acting director-general of the Meteorological Department, the onset of winter is assessed by three factors: a consistent drop in temperatures below 23°C across northern Thailand, a shift to northeast and east winds at lower altitudes, and a gradual decrease in rainfall. Retirement age to go up to 65

The Labor Ministry plans to raise the retirement age for both private and government sectors to 65 years, the same as in Singapore and Switzerland, said Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. Bangkok is set to experience increased pollution levels over the weekend as PM2.5 particles hang heavy in the air, exacerbated by cool weather and poor circulation, according to the Pollution Control Department. Unsafe PM2.5 concentrations were recorded in 36 areas across the city, with Nong Khaem district leading the pack at 51.1µg/m³.

These fine particulate matters were measured between 19.5µg/m³ and 53.8µg/m³ early this morning. Bangkok, Chiang Mai among world’s worst cities for air pollution

After the floods, air pollution follows in Thailand. Bangkok and Chiang Mai have made it into the top 50 cities worldwide for small dust particle pollution, according to the latest data from Swiss-based IQAir.

Moo Deng is the two-month-old pygmy hippo who flicks her ears in joy and likes splashing in water. Their decline has been drastic: a long-term survey in a national park in Ivory Coast found 12,000 pygmy hippos in 1982; 5,000 in 1997 and 2,000 in 2011. Trade agreements fuel growth in Thai agricultural exports

Thailand’s agricultural exports grew by 8% year on year in the first eight months of 2024, valued at $19.826 billion, the Department of International Trade Negotiations said. Speaking yesterday, Anutin noted that although Thailand is also impacted by water released from neighboring countries, manageable measures are being undertaken to mitigate potential flooding impacts.

Chiang Mai City: Floods Expected to Surpass 2011 Levels

The flooding in Chiang Mai continues to worsen as the Ping River reaches record-breaking levels. As of 9pm last night, the water level in the city of Chiang Mai had risen to 4.83 meters, surpassing the 2022 flood level. Authorities expect the level to climb above 5.10 meters, exceeding the 2011 flood levels.

Reports from Chiang Mai indicate that the situation remains critical, as new floodwaters from Mae Taeng District have reached the city. The flooding has expanded, inundating major economic areas such as the Night Bazaar, San Pa Khoi Market, and parts of the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, with water depths ranging from 50 to 100 cm. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra presided over the handing out of 10,000-baht to the first group of recipients on Wednesday morning and pledged to hold the second and third phases soon. Playful rain, cheerful mist at Ban E-Tong

As soon as we arrived at Ban E-Tong, a small village in Kanchanaburi province, in the late afternoon, everyone found themselves in a kingdom engulfed by mist. The familiar scenes were almost entirely swallowed up. We willingly stepped out of the car, humbly embracing the clarity of the season.

The journey, more than 300 kilometers from Bangkok, felt longer. B.Grimm Power Public Co. (B.Grimm Power) has signed 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) through its subsidiaries and joint ventures. The agreements cover eight companies and represent a combined total contracted capacity of 323.3 megawatts (MW) for solar farm projects.
