Summer of 2024 has claimed 38 lives in Thailand due to heatstroke

A total of 38 people have died of heatstroke this year and most deaths occurred in the northeast of Thailand, the Heath Department said on Sunday.

Dr. Atthapol Kaewsamrit, deputy director-general of the Health Department, said that many parts of Thailand were experiencing extreme hot weather since February 22, resulting in 38 deaths caused by heatstroke. Continued …

Water discharges through Lop Buri dam cut by 62% to conserve water

The reservoir behind Pasak Jolasid Dam in Lop Buri province is drying up, with water only filling 15% of its capacity, sufficient for consumption and agriculture for about four months.

Chupong Isarat, director of the Pasak Jolasid Dam Water Distribution and Maintenance Project, said that only about 148 million cubic meters of water are left, making it necessary to reduce discharges of water from the reservoir from 3.4 million cubic meters per day to only 1.3 million cubic meters, starting this week, as planned by the Royal Irrigation Department. Hazardous smog chokes north, world’s 4th worst level in Chiang Mai

Most provinces in the north were blanketed with dangerous red-coded levels of PM2.5 this morning, with Chiang Mai rated the city with the fourth worst air pollution in the entire world.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 8am today that 11 provinces were facing red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 82.1 to 158.8 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Three workers killed amid hailstorms in northeast

Several northeastern provinces were hit by hail and thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday, resulting in three deaths of construction workers in Bueng Kan.

Hailstorm Kills 21,000 Chickens and Damages Worth 3 Million Baht

A major hailstorm in the Phu Kheaw district of Chaiyaphum caused extensive damage and led to the death of 21,000 chickens at a local poultry farm. The cost of destruction is estimated to be over 3 million baht.

Chinese Businessmen Extorted in Bangkok; Police Officers Among Suspects

Five Chinese businessmen were forcibly detained and extorted for 2.5 million baht in Bangkok on May 5. The extortion perpetrators, according to the Din Daeng police, included active and retired Thai law enforcement officers and civilians.

Households spend most on travel, petrol, phone bills

Thai household spending on consumer goods in April averaged 18,187 baht, with the biggest expenses being on public transport, petrol and mobile phones, according to a Commerce Ministry survey.

The non-food and alcoholic products category accounted for 58.5% of the total expenditure, while the food and non-alcoholic products category comprised the remaining 41.5%, said Poonpong Naiyanapaporn, head of the ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office. Continued …

Trang Tourist Boat Overturns, One Fatality

A severe incident occurred at sea near the Pak Meng Bridge, Trang Sea, when a long-tail tourist boat carrying 14 occupants capsized. Tragically, a 68-year-old woman died.

Chonburi Surpasses Phuket as Second Most Visited Tourist Spot in Thailand

Bangkok is still the most-visited city in Thailand as of March, according to statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. It saw 4,459,579 tourist arrivals, with approximately 50% being from overseas. Hotel occupancy sat at 76.3%.

Bangkok Metropolitan Police arrested a 20-year-old woman for allegedly creating fake accommodation booking pages to scam and defraud victims. Despite her denial of any wrongdoing, the Thai authorities affirm that the evidence against the woman, Kanyawee Prompichai, is substantial.

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

The hope is, in spite of El Nino, that the current dry season will give way to rainfall from the middle of May. The IEAT governor, Veeris Ammarapala, said there was no immediate crisis as the region’s 6,000 factories had additional water supplies from reservoir transfers, the purchase of raw water from companies and the facility of wastewater treatment to reuse the resource. The Livestock Development Department has warned that eggs will become more expensive because hens and ducks are laying fewer eggs due to the heatwave.

The department said on Tuesday that the sweltering heat has prompted many poultry farms to report a significant drop in egg production and seek permission to raise prices. The Thai Chamber of Commerce is working with the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission (OPDC) and the Business Development Department to link corporate information electronically, facilitating paperless procedures and generating cost savings for residents and entrepreneurs of up to 7 billion baht per year.

Digital wallet scheme approved in principle by Cabinet

A Cabinet meeting on Tuesday approved in principle the government’s proposed digital wallet scheme to stimulate the economy, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin announced in a press event after the meeting ended. #digitalwallet

Sudawan Wangsupakitkosol, minister of tourism and sports, reported that the Economics Tourism and Sports Division has summarized the latest information on Thai and foreign tourists during the Songkran Festival 2024, from April 1-21.

Thailand Enters Low Tourism Season

Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, the president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), revealed that Thailand is officially entering the low season, saying Thai tourism operators may struggle with low incoming tourists after the Songkran holidays.

Chinese and Japanese tourists are expected to flock to Thailand during the Labor Day holiday and Japan’s Golden Week, driving arrivals to 996,000, up 29% from the corresponding period last year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Cops up ante on foreign criminals

Authorities are ramping up their crackdown on foreign criminals who arrive in the guise of tourists and use Thailand as their base for committing crimes.

Police Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, said the government has instructed the Royal Thai Police and the Interior Ministry to take measures to deal with the problem, particularly in Phuket. 206 Deaths in 5 Days of ‘Songkran 7 Days Road Safety Campaign’

A total of 1,564 road accidents, with 1,593 injuries and 206 deaths, were reported on Tuesday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in five days (April 1115) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 1117).

The provinces with the total highest fatalities were Bangkok and Chiang Rai with 13 deaths each. The total highest number of accidents was Chiang Rai with 61 and the highest number of injuries was Nan with 60 injuries. Continued …

Most Thais waiting for 10,000-baht digital handout, opinion poll finds

Nearly 70% of Thais said they are ready to receive the 10,000-baht digital wallet handout that is being launched as an economic stimulus measure, a recent poll shows.

Under the scheme, all Thais aged 16 and above with a monthly income of less than 70,000 baht and bank deposits lower than 500,000 baht will receive 10,000 baht via a digital wallet to spend at local shops. Digital wallet ‘super app’ to link with bank apps

The so-called super app earmarked for the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme will work in sync with existing mobile applications for banks on users’ phones, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

The app, he explained, was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) and the Digital Government Development Agency (DGA) for use in any digital-based policies. Gargantuan clean up after Songkran festivities

Songkran festivities around Bangkok metropolitan area resulted in 51,000 tons of waste, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Tuesday. This year’s waste statistics were collected from April 12 to 15, and are higher than the same period last year by about 1,000 tons, said the BMA.

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt said six water trucks and city officials were deployed to clean up this tourist attraction starting at 4am on Tuesday. Songkran revelers: More than 100 tons of garbage on Silom and Khao San roads

The three-day Songkran water splashing on Khao San Road was over on Monday night and left behind about 116 tons of garbage, mostly drinking water bottles, plastic bags, water guns, plastic buckets and traces of white clay flour, to be collected by city collectors.

Thailand’s foreign tourism boom: 10 million visitors fuel 500 billion windfall

Thailand has welcomed over 10 million foreign tourists this year alone, leading to revenue exceeding 500 billion baht, reported the Tourism and Sports Ministry. The data, up to date as of yesterday, shows 10,723,953 foreign visitors have contributed to an income of 518 billion baht (US$14 billion).

Tour Boat Catches Fire In Ayutthaya, All Aboard Rescued

A tourist boat caught fire as it was bringing 24 Thai tourists for a sight-seeing tour of the Chao Phraya River in Muang district of Ayutthaya province yesterday afternoon. All the tourists were, however, safely evacuated to another passing tourist boat.

Relocation of cadmium tailings from Bangkok commences May 7

The logistics of relocating cadmium tailings from Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, and Chon Buri back to their original location in Tak is set to start on May 7. Bound & Beyond Plc, the company responsible for the task, has a deadline of 36 days to execute the operation, as stated by Pimphattra Wichaikul, the Industry Minister.

Pimphattra revealed yesterday that the committee in charge of the tailings’ transport has considered a revised plan. This revised plan involves the use of 30 trucks to relocate 450 tons of cadmium tailings per day, starting May 7. Thailand’s incredible nature reserve — where a trip costs just £7

Outside my tent it’s like Jurassic Park. The thundering footsteps of what must be some primordial giant make the canvas tremble. I peek out. In the midnight darkness I can make out the silhouette of a junior bull elephant stomping below our protected camp, battering the bamboo in a pique of sexual frustration. Taking a dip in Hua Hin a long time ago

It is not often I can remember what I was doing five days ago let alone 55 years, but a moth-eaten diary confirms that on April 14, 1969, I was in the Thai resort town of Hua Hin. A brief explanation is necessary.

A few days earlier I had arrived in Thailand after an exhausting overland trip across Asia from London. With me in Bangkok was one of the traveling companions on that journey, fellow Brit Clarence Shettlesworth. When is Hua Hin planning to start rationing water?

On April 6, the Hua Hin Water Department put out a notice announcing the “immediate” rationing of water, with water available only between 5am-10:30am daily. The rationing was announced on April 8. It is now April 10 and the water is still running.

So, what’s going on? Did “immediate” mean sometime this month? Is the decision to start rationing being delayed because of the Songkran holiday?

We asked the government for details but they still have not responded. We are particularly interested in whether hotels, resorts, restaurants and water parks would be included in the water rationing. These are all heavy water-using businesses, with many depending on the tourist dollars a vibrant – and wet – Songkran would provide.

One resort we asked about the water rationing said it was “buying extra water from wherever we can”, and that trucks were delivering water daily. “Quite a hassle but it is what it is.”

A cynic might think the government is holding back until after Songkran, fearing that water rationing would ruin Songkran in Hua Hin, and all the money it provides. Given how protective local officials (and some farang) are of Hua Hin, this would not be a surprise.

We hope, however, the government is not sacrificing people’s lives because of a holiday.

Wherever you live, you’ve heard people make some wild comments about your country. Here are a few comments when asked, “What’s the most ignorant thing a tourist has said about your country?”

“When visiting LA, I was chatting with a girl at a party, and when she asked where I’m from, I told her London. She then said, ‘Omg, I hate London.’ I was slightly confused and asked if she’d ever been, and she said ‘No.’ I was like, ‘Okay, nice chatting with you!'”

“I knew someone who was shocked that we don’t live in stone cottages and thought Ireland was like a developing world country.”

“‘Where do you keep the Vikings?’ An American tourist visiting Denmark asked. I left him very confused and a little disappointed by telling him the truth about Vikings and that we did, in fact, not have reservations or anything.”

“I overheard an American woman saying that she was surprised at how well we Australians spoke American, although the accent made it a little hard to understand.”

“I met an American once who was under the impression that suburban Canadians all lived in wood cabins in the wilderness. At first, I thought he was kidding. Then he asked if we had winters all year round and was astonished to learn we have lengthy summers.”

Extra caution urged amid hot conditions

The Public Health Ministry is urging all members of the public to take precautions against the searing heat, which is expected to linger for the next couple of weeks, after reports of two deaths over the past two days due to suspected heatstroke.

With daytime temperatures often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in many areas, more people are susceptible to heatstroke, which can cause organ failure and even death, said Public Health Permanent Secretary Opas Karnkawinpong on Tuesday. Continued …

Thais rank No.1 in Asia for number of sexual partners

The World Population Review website published its 2024 ranking for the average number of sexual partners by country, unveiling that Thai individuals have the highest number of sexual partners in Asia.

The ranking was compiled based on surveys conducted in 46 countries on how many sexual partners a person has in their lifetimes. The World Population Review stated that the numbers are related to the cultural norms. Continued …

Cabinet agrees to Bt235B to fund health Gold Card scheme

The cabinet approved a Bt235-billion budget for 2025 fiscal year to fund the universal health security scheme (Gold Card) for the Thai population, under which each citizen will be entitled to medical coverage worth an average of Bt3,844.55.

The new health security budget is an increase of 9.53% over the 2024. The bulk of the money, about 181 billion baht, will go to the universal health security scheme for about 47 million Thais. Continued …

Thailand ranks 44th in global crime index

Thailand is ranked 44th in the Global Organized Crime Index, highlighting issues like human trafficking, arms trade, and copyright infringement. These challenges hinder cooperation within ASEAN and call for urgent action. Thailand is labeled a “hub” in these illicit activities, emphasizing the need for joint efforts.

More than a year after the sinking of HTMS Sukhothai, a Rattanakosin-class corvette, in the Gulf of Thailand off Prachuap Khiri Khan province on the night of Dec. 18, 2022, the Thai Navy has blamed a sudden, unexpected and extreme change in weather and sea conditions for the foundering of the vessel and the deaths of 24 officers and men. Thai doctor offered bribe to drop lawsuit in Swiss scandal

The Thai doctor who was a victim in the Swiss scandal case in Phuket revealed that an unidentified person offered her and her family a bribe in exchange for withdrawing the lawsuit against the Swiss man.

The female doctor took to social media and accused the Swiss man, Urs Fehr, of physically assaulting her by kicking her in the back. The incident took place outside Fehr’s luxury villa on the beach near Yamu Cape in the Thalang district of Phuket on Feb. 24. Continued … 

Street vendor’s fried wonton pricing sparks uproar

A recent social media post sparked a debate about the fairness of food pricing after a woman paid 50 baht for less than 10 pieces of fried wontons from a street vendor. Thailand’s currency one of Asia’s worst performers

Thailand’s currency may extend its recent declines to test support at last year’s low amid growing pressure on the central bank to cut interest rates, according to the U.S. website Bloomberg.com.

The currency has already dropped almost 7% since the start of January, making it one of Asia’s worst performers, and putting it less than 1.4% away from October’s low of 37.237 per dollar. Some analysts see that level being tested if the Bank of Thailand trims its benchmark today. Continued …

Thai restaurant sales set to surge despite economic lull

A trade group predicts a boost in restaurant sales during the second quarter, which could potentially surpass pre-pandemic levels, despite the current stagnant economy.

Thaniwan Kulmongkol, president of the Thai Restaurant Assn., noted that although the second quarter is typically a slow season for the Thai restaurant industry, the Songkran festival is expected to stimulate sales. Caution urged on entertainment complexes housing casinos

Ninety-nine academics have joined in opposition to the entertainment complexes for which the House of Representatives approved a study on March 28. The study will address illegal gambling issues and the economic benefit of such complexes, which would house casinos as well as other facilities.

In their statement, the academics said gambling is not considered an activity that generates production because it merely involves transferring money from the pockets of losers to the pockets of winners, and in casinos, the winners are the owners. Continued …

Foreign demand for Chon Buri condos outpaces Bangkok

The tourism industry’s recovery and the ongoing development of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) gave a significant boost to the real estate industry in the eastern province of Chon Buri last year, the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) said on Monday.

The most outstanding growth was seen in the sale of condominiums to foreign buyers, said REIC Director Wichai Wiratkapan, noting that 5,935 condo units in the province were transferred to foreigners last year, accounting for 41.1% of all condo units bought by foreigners nationwide. Continued …

A guide to public Songkran events in Hua Hin

Despite the current severe water shortage and imminent water rationing, Hua Hin is gearing up for a vibrant and larger-than-ever Songkran festival, which will take place between April 11-13. Songkran is, of course, the traditional Thai New Year, originally observed as a three-day national holiday from April 13-15.

Cabinet suspends filing of TM6 cards at 12 checkpoints until Oct 15

The Cabinet resolved on Tuesday to suspend the filing of TM6 arrival/departure cards at 12 land and sea checkpoints, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said.

He said tourists arriving via land or sea at 12 checkpoints, including the Sadao border checkpoint in Songkhla province, will not be required to file TM6 cards from April 15 to Oct. 15. He added that the suspension of TM6 cards will make it more convenient for foreign tourists to enter the country. Continued …

Haze control effort ramps up as Songkran approaches

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has instructed Chiang Mai and every province in the upper north to prepare their operation centers to handle the haze situation in order to ease air pollution during the upcoming Songkran festival when a rise in the number of tourists is expected.

The centers, each led by the provincial governor, are expected to become fully operational today, said Deputy Prime Minister and Natural Resources and Environment Minister Phatcharavat Wongsuwan. Pump prices of diesel will increase by 50 satang a liter today morning amid rising concern about the cost of subsidizing the fuel, said Wisak Watanasap, director of the Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO). The new price of diesel B7, B10 and B20 will be 30.44 baht per liter.

Premium diesel will cost 42.44 baht, according to announcements issued on Friday evening by the country’s two largest fuel retailers, PTT Oil and Retail Business and Bangchak Corp. Continued …

Deflation feared, ministry calls for monetary stimulus

Spate of university deaths raises PM2.5 fears

The recent death of an academic in Chiang Mai from lung cancer has heightened concerns about PM2.5 pollution in the northern province, which has consistently ranked as one of the world’s most air-polluted areas.

Water problems escalate in Hua Hin

Expat News is seeing online reports of widespread water rationing in Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. The Pran Buri Dam, which supplies 90% of Hua Hin’s water supply, is reportedly at 25% of capacity, while the city seeks more water from the Phetchaburi dam.

There are reports of launderettes closing for lack of water, restaurants and other businesses closing or rationing water. Hotels and other large businesses are using water trucks to replenish their tanks.

With the temperatures expected to increase over the next two weeks, the water shortage problem will not go away until the rainy season arrives.

Thailand grapples with scorching 43C heatwave

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a health warning today as Thailand grapples with a heatwave, as temperatures soar to extreme highs of up to 43 degrees Celsius in the north, northeast, and central regions, compounded by moderate to high levels of dust accumulation and smoke haze.

Today, the country is enveloped in a heat-induced low-pressure system, leading to predominantly hot to very hot weather conditions and clear skies during the day, prompting a strong recommendation for the public to take care of their health by avoiding prolonged outdoor activities. Continued …

Water crisis hits Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Samui, tap water rationed

On Koh Pha Ngan, a water crisis since late March has led to a stringent rationing of tap water, which affected both locals and tourists. The rationing, operating on a rotational basis, leaves some areas parched on certain days while others savor the flow. A meager 3,500m3 to 4,000m3 of water trickles through the pipes daily, barely meeting the island’s thirst.

Cadmium disaster zone declared

The governor of Samut Sakhon province has declared two foundries in Muang district disaster zones after finding 15,000 tons of carcinogenic cadmium waste illegally acquired from Tak province.

Phol Damtham issued the order on Thursday after inspecting two foundries operated by a company on Soi Kong Phananphon off Ekachai Road in tambon Bang Nam Jued. Officials found about 1,600 large bags of cadmium and zinc waste there. Continued …

Bullion prices have hit a new record high of over US$2,300 an ounce, with sustained demand from central banks and rising geopolitical conflict. This led local traders to raise their forecasts for both global and domestic prices of gold to US$2,350 and 40,500 baht, respectively.

The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) updated the domestic price by 400 baht per baht-weight before noon, with gold bars trading at 39,950 baht and gold jewelry at 40,450 baht per baht-weight. Pawan Nawawattanasub, the chief executive of YLG Bullion International, now projects gold to reach US$2,350 this year after the price touched its original target of US$2,300 in the first half. March headline inflation misses central bank target for 11th month

Thailand’s headline consumer price index dropped for the sixth straight month in March, the commerce ministry said, and was outside the central bank’s target range for the 11th straight month.

The headline consumer price index (CPI) in March fell 0.47% from a year earlier, compared with a forecast drop of 0.40% in a Reuters poll and outside the central bank’s target range of 1% to 3%. Continued …

Thai condo market dominated by Chinese and Russian investors

Foreign buyers from China and Russia dominated the Thai condominium market in 2023, as per data from the Real Estate Information Center (REIC). The report disclosed a total of 14,449 units, valued at 73.2 billion baht, were purchased by international buyers, marking a 25% increase from 2022.

Service sector, tourism redeeming features in Thailand’s slow growth

The Thai economy expanded at a slow pace in February, but the performance of the service sector, which saw a large improvement in both the number of tourists and tourism revenue, was a silver lining. The Bank of Thailand (BOT) released its monthly economic outlook on Friday.

The central bank said private investment and manufacturing production also improved in some sectors, while private consumption remained stable. However, the value of merchandise exports, excluding gold, declined from the previous month by 2.9%, as exports of several industries remained sluggish. This is a result of a subdued recovery in global demand, a high level of inventory, as well as Thailand’s structural factors, the BOT said. Continued …

The ratio of household debt to gross domestic product in Thailand rose slightly to 91.3% at the end of 2023 from 91% in September, the Bank of Thailand said on Friday, as the economy slowed.

The amount of debt was 16.4 trillion baht, versus 16.2 trillion baht at the end of the previous quarter, the central bank said in its monthly economic update. Continued …

Chiang Mai expands Songkran booze and smoking bans
