Fuel tariff charge for May-August period to remain unchanged

The Energy Regulatory Commission has decided to freeze the fuel tariff (FT) for the May-August period at 39.72 satang/unit, which will keep the price of electricity at an average of 4.1805 baht/unit, excluding VAT, said ERC Secretary-General Komkrit Tantravanich today.

He said that the FT for the four-month period was adopted after the ERC’s office had conducted an online public hearing, from March 8-22, to gauge the opinions of members of the public about the FT; 147 opinions were received. Continued …

Gay marriage bill passes; next up: legal prostitution

Thailand’s lower house on Wednesday finalized a gay marriage law, which now goes to the Senate. Members of the House committee in Parliament celebrated, as did leading political figures. The new law is part of a trio of measures centered on human rights for all Thai people.

These are being pushed by the government of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. At length, they include a new gender identity law and, quite significantly, a law to legalize prostitution in the country. Continued …

Rising risk of influenza and dengue amid Covid-19, warns DDC

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has issued an alert about the escalating risk of influenza and dengue fever this year, amid the persisting threat of Covid-19. The department’s recent communicable diseases report highlights the significance of these health risks.

Department spokesperson Dr. Jurai Wongsawat disclosed that the beginning of the year saw substantial clusters of influenza in schools, prisons, and military camps. The most vulnerable demographic to influenza turned out to be children between 5 and 9 years old, accounting for a significant proportion of the cases. Continued …

Thailand’s Challenge with Alcohol Regulation: Seeking a Balanced Approach

No less than four draft laws on alcohol control will soon go before Parliament, but none appear to contain a middle path that will satisfy everyone. Two drafts, one proposed by the Public Health Ministry’s Disease Control Department (DCD) and the other by an anti-alcohol group, push for strict control – apparently out of concern about health and other impacts of drinking.

The two other drafts, one written by a pro-alcohol group and the other by Move Forward MP and craft-beer champion Taopiphop Limjittrakorn, seek to break monopoly-like conditions in the industry, which is dominated by just a handful of brewing giants. Continued …

To revolutionize its urban landscape, Pattaya is making strides toward becoming a wireless city. Following the removal of overhead power lines along Walking Street, the city is now embarking on a new project to rid South Pattaya Road of unsightly power poles.

Thai labor unions criticize new daily minimum wage

The Thai Labor Solidarity Confederation (TLSC) and State Enterprises Workers’ Relations Confederation (SEWRC) expressed disapproval of the new daily minimum wage of 400 baht approved by the tripartite wage committee. The wage increase is only applicable to some areas in 10 provinces, initiating a wave of criticism from the labor unions, who argue that this decision is unjust.

According to the unions, this wage discrepancy among workers within the same province will generate inequalities. They argue that despite the cost of basic commodities and services remaining consistent across the provinces, the wage disparity will create an unfair system. They urge the government and Labor Ministry to eliminate wage inequalities and maintain a uniform daily minimum wage of no less than 400 baht (US$11), ideally 492 baht (US$14). Continued …

Digital wallet scheme to be finalized in April: PM

After a brief meeting of the digital wallet committee on Wednesday evening, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin instructed the Finance Ministry and the Budget Bureau to finalize the details of the scheme for submission to the next committee meeting on April 10.

Thailand’s Agricultural Exports Under FTA Reach 500 billion baht

Chantanon Wannakejohn, secretary-general of the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, revealed the overall picture of Thailand’s agricultural trade with the world in 2023. Thailand had a total trade value of 2.372 trillion baht (65.2 billion USD), down 0.13% from 2022, which was 2.375 trillion baht. However, Thailand still had a trade surplus of 951 billion baht.

Looking only at the countries that have joined the free trade agreement (FTA), namely China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Chile, India and Hong Kong (with the exception of the ASEAN countries), it can be seen that they continue to show steady growth. Continued …

A neck-snapping acceleration for Thailand’s sluggish vehicle sales is expected over the next two weeks as the 45th Bangkok International Motor Show 2024 gets underway at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani.

Toyota to make electric pickups in Thailand

The Japanese automaker Toyota wants to benefit from the rapid growth of the electric vehicle (EV) industry in Thailand by manufacturing electric pickup trucks in the country, a move viewed by an industry observer as a fresh effort to revamp its development of zero-emission cars.

Koh Larn wind energy project under scrutiny for misuse of funds

The wind turbine project to generate renewable power on Koh Larn in Pattaya has reportedly become a waste of resources after critics alleged that the turbines have broken down for a long time and the city lacked enough funding to repair them.

The turbine project, located in Khao Nom Sao mountain near Samae Beach, was initiated back in 2006 with a budget of 95 million baht. It aimed to generate electricity through wind and solar power for 489 households (around 3,000 people) on Koh Larn. Continued …

Baht continues decline

The baht plunged against the U.S. dollar on Friday, primarily influenced by external factors, with seasonal fluctuations expected to exert continued pressure on the local currency, potentially weakening to 37 per dollar during the second quarter.

Insurgents launch 39 coordinated attacks in four deep south provinces

Suspected insurgents carried out coordinated attacks on at least 39 locations in four southernmost provinces in the early hours of Friday, leaving at least one person dead, local security authorities said.

Aussie mortgage broker golf summit to be held in Hua Hin

Anti-aging coffee to be studied as a potential healthcare product

With the mutual goal of developing healthcare innovations and high-quality for collaboration on the research and development of innovative healthcare products, knowledge and skill improvement, and brand building, Revomed Group has entered into a partnership with Mahidol University to develop healthcare products.

The first product under this cooperation will be the anti-aging coffee developed by faculty from the coffee sourced from a research farm in Nan province. The faculty’s Department of Nutrition has been conducting research into antioxidant levels in the beans from these farms and the results show that the ORAC or the level of antioxidants in the coffee equals 15 fresh tomatoes. Police chiefs suspended over alleged gambling links

The Prime Minister of Thailand suspended two top police chiefs of the Royal Thai Police (RTP) from their positions due to alleged internal conflict and connections to online gambling.

PM Srettha Thavisin yesterday transferred RTP Commissioner Torsak “Big Tor” Sukvimol and Deputy Commissioner Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, to temporary roles at the Prime Minister’s Office for 60 days. Police Gen. Kitrat Phanphet has been assigned as acting RTP commissioner. Continued …

500-billion-baht digital wallet green light

With a budget proposal of 3.48 trillion baht (US$96.5 billion) for the fiscal year under discussion, the government of Thailand is determined to proceed with a significant 500-billion-baht (US$13.8 billion) digital wallet handout scheme, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat. During the parliamentary debate, Julapun stated the possible necessity of securing a loan via a bill to finance the scheme.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered the Energy Ministry to speed up measures to allow businesses to buy clean energy directly from generators such as solar farms, the government spokesman said on Wednesday.

Isuzu allocates Bt32 billion for Thailand EV investments

Yokohama, Japan-based automaker Isuzu Motors plans to spend ¥1 trillion (240 billion baht) to fuel its investments through 2030, with part of the budget allocated for battery cell and electric pickup manufacturing in Thailand, which will serve as the company’s electric vehicle (EV) export base.

What’s with the water bills?

For many in Hua Hin, the home delivery and payment of water bills is over. This week, water bill delivery drivers alerted customers that they needed to head on down to the Water Department office to pay.

Normally, that’s not a big deal, as there are usually only a few people there paying their bills. But with the change came long lines at the Water Department, meaning waits for as long as an hour.

This change does not seem like a budgetary one, as the bills still have to be delivered. And it certainly is not a customer-friendly move. So, what’s going on?

Here’s a clue. We remember last year a news mention that 7-Eleven stores were being asked to take on the bill-collecting task, as they currently do with electric bills. We never heard another word about the convenient option, but our guess is the “pay the bill at the office” mandate will be a short one. – Hua Hin Expat News

House to deliberate bill legalizing casinos on March 28

The House is scheduled to deliberate a bill to legalize casino complexes on March 28, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Tuesday. If the House approves the bill, he will immediately submit it to the Cabinet for approval.

Julapun heads a special House committee in charge of studying the legalization of entertainment complexes with casinos as a way to tackle illegal gambling and to boost the economy. The Rural Doctor Society (RDS) says the Public Health Ministry’s data was breached again and this time, 2.2 million citizen records were stolen and put up for sale on the “dark web”.

The RDS backed its allegation on Tuesday with screen captures of the breachforum.cx website, showing a “god user” advertising the sale of 2.2 million records of Thai citizens for US$10,000 (about 360,000 baht). Continued …

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew gave his assurance on Tuesday that patient data stored in the ministry’s system is safe and secure following a rumor that the personal information of over 2.2 million Thai people had been leaked.

New Finance Minister expected in April as economic malaise deepens

A new minister of finance may be appointed in April. It comes as the Pheu Thai-led government comes to terms with economic realities. This includes the growing problem of ballooning private sector debt and structural impediments to growth.

At the same time, most analysts agree that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who currently handles the role, has spooked markets with his overt criticism in recent months of the country’s central bank. UTCC slashes Thailand 2024 growth forecast from 3.2% to 2.6%

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) on Tuesday slashed its 2024 economic growth forecast for Thailand from 3.2% to 2.6%.

Smog crisis in north refuses to diminish

Rocky start for Thailand’s latest alcohol tax reform

Thailand has decided to cut its prohibitive alcohol taxes. The tax changes were announced earlier this year, and took effect from March 1. The cabinet proposed an alcohol tax slash at three levels.

First, the import duties of 54% will be reduced to 0%. Second, the excise tax will drop from 10% to 5%. Another excise tax, which applies to the volume and percentage of alcohol and calculated at 1,500 baht (£32.84) per liter for every 100 degrees of alcohol content, will now come down to 1,000 baht. Chiang Mai is top of the world’s 10 cities with the highest levels of air pollution, according to the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings today.

According to the IQAir website, the AQI reading in Chiang Mai is 200, followed by Tashkent in Uzbekistan at 193, 154 in Lahore in Pakistan, 160 in Beijing, 157 in Wuhan, 155 in Yangon, 154 in New Delhi, 154 in Dubai, 153 in Hang Zhou and 151 in Calcutta. Continued …

Thousands more chemicals in plastic than previously thought

At least 3,000 more chemicals are present in plastics — from food packaging to children’s toys to medical devices — than previously estimated by international environment agencies, a report published on Thursday found.

While the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and other institutions had previously identified 13,000 plastic chemicals, the report by a team of European scientists found more than 16,000 chemicals — a quarter of which are thought to be hazardous to human health and the environment. Two women found shot dead at property in Hua Hin

Police are currently investigating the deaths of two women found shot at a property in Hua Hin. The deceased, identified as a 63-year-old businesswoman and her 46-year-old secretary, were discovered on Sunday by the son of the older woman, after he grew concerned over his inability to contact his mother for several days.

Traveling from Bangkok to Hua Hin, he arrived at his mother’s home to find it securely locked, with the air conditioning still running. Upon entering the house through a back window, he was met with a foul smell, prompting him to alert local authorities. Continued …

Anthrax outbreak in Laos prompts raw meat warning in Thailand

Kenika Ounjit, a deputy government spokesperson, yesterday revealed a public health warning from the Department of Livestock Development. The warning urged the public to refrain from consuming raw meat. This follows a report of an anthrax outbreak in Laos.

According to the report, three cases of anthrax were identified on March 4 in the Soukhoumma district of the Lao province of Champasak. This province shares a border with Thailand’s eastern Ubon Ratchathani province, raising concerns for potential cross-border transmission, said Kenika, highlighting raw beef, buffalo, goat, and sheep meat as potential carriers of the bacterium. Hazardous smog in 48 provinces

Forty-eight provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 on Monday morning and 11 provinces, mostly in the north, faced red levels of pollution, with Chiang Mai suffering the most.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported at 10am on Monday that the highest level of particulate matter, 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), was detected in the northern province of Chiang Mai, at 125.3 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Boy, 14, arrested for shooting death of teen in Hua Hin

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in downtown Hua Hin last Thursday evening. Hua Hin Police Station launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on Naresdamri close to the entrance to Hua Hin Fishing Pier.

The shooting not only claimed the life of the young victim, known as “Nong Din,” but also left his 16-year-old friend seriously injured after being caught in the gunfire. Continued …

Frequent use of mosquito spray urged as dengue death toll rises

In a warning against the spread of dengue fever, the Public Health Ministry has urged people to protect themselves by using anti-mosquito sprays and lotions.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Sunday that at the latest meeting of the National Communicable Disease Control committee, he learned that the number of dengue patients this year has risen to 17,783 cases, more than double the number compared to the same period last year. Someone is poisoning Rayong’s dogs, 36 dead so far

Three dog owners in Rayong’s Nikhom Phatthana district have asked police to take action against those responsible for poisoning their pets in separate incidents, resulting in the deaths of 36 animals. Somjit Palapol, a durian farmer, claims that his 19 dogs were poisoned on March 6, 17 of which died.

He said that he raised his dogs with love and best care, but they were killed by poison-laced food. ‘I am speechless and broken-hearted. I have already filed a complaint with the police, as the killings violate the law,’ he said. Continued …

Thai citizens view corruption within the civil service sector as motivated by greed more than any other reason, a new NIDA poll published on Sunday revealed.

Thai retail sector struggles despite tax incentives and tourist spending

Despite increased spending by tourists and tax incentives to encourage buying, Thailand’s retail sector is under strain. The sector, facing the challenges of a surge of substandard goods from China, is burdening local entrepreneurs.

Thai Retailers Assn. Vice President Chatchai Tuongratanaphan predicts a growth of only 1%-2% in the retail sector for the first half of the year. Most of the 12,000 Thais employed in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are illegal workers who were lured with promises of high pay. There are only about 4,500 who are fully and correctly documented.

Nipa Nirannoot, the Thai consul-general in Dubai, said many Thai women have been lured to work in massage parlors, but end up being forced into prostitution. Temperatures in Hua Hin and across Thailand are set to soar over the next week. The Thai Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast for Hua Hin says maximum temperatures will range from 36–38 °C, with average temperatures between March 6-12 reaching 35°C.

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. Over 30 years ago, he and his neighbors established the Khok Kham Natural Conservation Club after working with an international survey team that wanted to get insights on the biodiverse marine habitats in Thailand’s wetlands. 30 rainmaking planes to battle drought, pollution

The government plans to deploy 30 aircraft nationwide for cloud-seeding operations to induce artificial rain to battle air pollution and ease dry weather conditions in the main crop-growing areas.

Motorists to pay more for expressway travel from today

Toll fees for Bangkok’s Chalong Rat (Ramindra-At Narong) and Burapha Withi expressways will be more expensive from today.

The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) announced earlier this month that the fee for 4-wheel vehicles on the Chalong Rat Expressway will increase by 5 baht to 45 baht. The Thai economy in January showed signs of improvement from the previous month, but, overall, economic expansion remained slow, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) said on Thursday.

The Royal Thai Consulate in Sydney has announced it will stop issuing “sticker visas” and go live with eVisa online applications from March 19. The Sydney Consulate will only accept applications from people who live in NSW from that date.

Rama II Road upgrades will be completed in 2025, government says

There is an end in sight to the ongoing construction of the main route between Bangkok and the south of Thailand. The Department of Highways has confirmed that the long-awaited upgrades to Rama II Road, a key artery to Thailand’s southern region, are set to be completed by 2025.

Thai forest area in decline, matching world trend

The world’s total forest areas have shrunk by nearly 20 million square kilometres in the past three decades, from 42.03 million sq.km. reported in 1992, to 40.44 million sq.km. in 2021, according to World Bank data, which was last updated in October 2023.

Thailand, meanwhile, does not make the World Bank’s top 10, or even top 20 list of the largest share of world forests. Data from the Royal Forest Department indicates that the kingdom had a total forest area of 162,909 sq.km. in 2023, a figure that has gradually dropped in recent years. Continued …
