Why are so many foreigners residing in Thailand problematic types?

I can’t help but notice all the negative aspects about many of the expats I’ve come across in Thailand. It’s disheartening to see that so many foreigners seem to fall into one of several categories: unpleasant, criminal, or otherwise problematic.

Firstly, the number of rude and disrespectful expats is staggering. It’s as if some people left their manners at the airport. From obnoxious behavior in public to a complete lack of respect for Thai culture and people, these individuals don’t add anything positive to the backdrop. Russian arrested in Hua Hin with multiple drugs seized

A Russian man has been arrested and illegal drugs seized from his room in Hua Hin town of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

The arrest followed the seizure of a parcel containing 840 grams of mephedrone on June 24, Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) Secretary-general Panurat Lakboon said on Saturday. He did not disclose the name of the suspect. Continued …

Heavy flooding after torrential rains in Phuket

Heavy rainfall in Phuket disrupted flights and caused widespread flooding across the tourist island province. Starting at 7am yesterday, persistent rain forced the diversion of around 10 inbound flights to other airports, including Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, Krabi, Langkawi, Penang, and Surat Thani.

The heavy downpour reduced visibility, making it impossible for pilots to see the runway, according to Phuket airport director Monchai Tanod. Four outbound domestic flights were also affected, unable to depart as they waited for passengers from the delayed incoming flights. Continued …

Beware of currency storms

The health of Asian currencies has been making headlines lately. Madagascar lemurs, tortoises seized in Thai bust reveal reach of wildlife trafficking

In May, authorities in southern Thailand arrested six people for illegally transporting 48 lemurs and more than 1,200 critically endangered tortoises, all of which had reportedly been obtained from the wild in Madagascar.

The seizure is the latest in a string of illegal wildlife trade busts in Thailand. Red pandas, monitor lizards, snakes and parrots have been uncovered in similar incidents in the country in recent months, for instance. However, the recent seizure of so many critically endangered animals from Madagascar has alarmed experts, who say the latest bust underscores the global reach of wildlife trafficking networks using Thailand as a transshipment hub for illegally sourced wild animals and plants. Thai fruit the sweet spot for exports, May sales soar 128% over April

Thailand’s fruit exports in May soared 128% month on month to US$1.4 billion, the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) reported on Friday, predicting that the trend would continue for several months.

Total exports in May were valued at $26.21 billion, increasing 7.2% over the previous month and was the highest in 14 months, with main contributions coming from agricultural products, TPSO Director-general Poonpong Naiyanapakorn said. Continued … 

Thai canned tuna is the world leader with export volumes surging by 19%

Thailand exported 221,092 tons of canned tuna during the first five months of 2024, an increase of 19.4% compared to the same period last year. The exports were valued at $978.56 million, a growth of 13.4%.

Yesterday, Thai authorities successfully executed a sting operation in Bueng Kan province, foiling an illegal wildlife trafficking scheme involving a valuable tiger cub. The would-be sellers sought a substantial profit of 300,000 baht, equivalent to roughly US$8,200.

Executives of the Revenue, Excise and Customs departments were called to a meeting by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Wednesday after revenue collection in the first seven months reportedly missed the target by 2.4%, or 35.49 billion baht.

Thailand’s new Tourism and Sports Minister, Sermsak Pongpanich, has hinted at the impending introduction of a tourist tax, known as the Kha Yeap Pan Din, translating to a landing fee.
