Flood victims to receive maximum 230,000 baht per household

The government will provide a maximum of 230,000 baht in financial aid to every household affected by floods in several provinces, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Monday. This money is on top of the 40,000 to 50,000 baht compensation being paid for other cases, such as deaths, PM’s Secretary-general Prommin Lertsuridej, added.

Paetongtarn said that she would propose to the Cabinet that 3 billion baht be disbursed from the central budget for flood relief during a meeting today. Continued …

Nong Khai governor says flooding to end in two weeks

The governor of Nong Khai province said flooding in the province may end in two weeks because the level in the Mekong is now receding, and the provincial administration will organize a major cleanup once the situation eases.

“Singto,” a member of Thailand’s K9 Urban Search and Rescue team, has died of cancer after 11 years of dedicated service to the organization, said Alongkot Chukaew, deputy director of K9 USAR Thailand. Alongkot noted that Singto was a very strong dog, always ready to face any challenge, and worked with him through difficult times, such as diving in reservoirs to search for missing persons. Damage to the economy from flooding could reach 27 billion baht

Minimum wage rising to 400 baht despite employers skipping meeting

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said the minimum daily wage is rising to 400 baht nationwide from Oct. 1 despite employers’ representatives not showing up for the tripartite wage committee meeting yesterday. He warned employers that if they still remain silent and not show up for the next meeting scheduled for Friday he would still proceed with the wage hike.

Phiphat mentioned that he had received letters from chambers of commerce in almost every province, including provincial industrial councils and the Federation of Thai Industries, stating that they were not ready to increase wages at this time. Continued …

Baht expected to continue to rise

The baht could appreciate further, after hitting a 19-month high of 32.2 baht to the dollar on Monday, if the U.S. Federal Reserve cuts interest rates deeper than 25 basis points at its meeting this week, as falling U.S. inflation could prompt the central bank to deliver an outsized rate cut.

The Thai currency rose from Friday’s close of 33.33 baht against the greenback as investors rushed to sell the dollar ahead of the central bank’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Wednesday, according to Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research). Continued …

Rotary Club 14th Amateur Charity Golf Nov 29

The Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin will hold its 14th Amateur Charity Golf Classic Friday, Nov. 29 at the Pineapple Valley Golf Club – formerly known as Banyan Golf Club.

The Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin has been helping local and regional causes since the club was founded in 2010 and has raised millions of Thai baht to improve the quality of life for underprivileged communities in Thailand, as well as education projects in other developing countries.

The group’s flagship project is the Children’s Water Safety & Drowning Prevention program that has been running for the last three years, and has taught over 600 children from 10 schools in Hua Hin not only to swim, but also to recognize the dangers of water and how to rescue others who may need life-saving assistance. Another key project was the purchase of a much-needed ambulance for Hua Hin Hospital costing 2.5 million Thai baht.

Mekong overflows in northeast, floods receding in Chiang Rai

As flood water steadily recedes in Chiang Rai province and flights by some airlines at the Mae Fah Luang airport have resumed, people living along the Mekong River in Loei, Nong Khai and Bueng Kan provinces were bracing for the river to overflow.

A deadly landslide yesterday struck the Mae Fa Luang district in Chiang Rai, claiming the lives of four people, including an 8-year-old girl. Over 150 houses were damaged , leaving the community in shock and grief.

Elderly Man Killed in Encounter with Wild Elephant in Kanchanaburi

In a tragic incident yesteday, a 71-year-old man lost his life after a sudden encounter with a wild elephant while riding his motorcycle in Kanchanaburi. The incident occurred on Highway 3199, in the Sri Sawat District.

Phaitoon Intraboot, head of the Salak Phra Wildlife Sanctuary, reported that the incident took place in the early morning. Local residents alerted wildlife officials stationed at the Mae Lamun Protection Unit that a villager had been severely injured by a wild elephant. The Digital Government Development Agency (DGA) has called off its plan to develop a payment platform for the “digital wallet” scheme, after no one expressed interested in bidding bid for the project.

There was previous a report that three companies were interested, but none of them entered the bidding, prompting the DGA’s cancellation of the plan. The China-U.S. trade war will create more opportunities for Thailand, Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan said on Friday. New expat tax regime may link visas and tax returns

The Revenue Department is preparing draft legislation to further its global tax initiative, including plans to tax all foreign residents on their worldwide income, irrespective of whether the money is remitted to Thailand. However, for most expats and those considering Thailand as a place to live, the discussion is only just beginning.

In the meantime, the key consideration is that for those who stay over 180 days in Thailand this year, a tax return is due by March 31, 2025. Certainly, at the very least, foreigners should have obtained and studied their country’s tax treaty with Thailand. Afterward, how the Revenue Department moves to impose its new powers remains to be seen. For instance, it may choose to link tax reporting with the issuance of long-term visas very shortly. Why is Thai healthcare so good?

Thai healthcare is among the most effective in the world. The average Thai can expect to live to 80, much longer than their regional counterpart (the Southeast Asian figure is 73) and even slightly longer than the average American and European (each roughly 79), according to the latest data from the United Nations.

Last year, a whopping 99.5% of the population of 72million was covered by health insurance. Remarkably, Thailand has achieved this as a developing country: its income per person was roughly $7,000 in 2023, more than 11 times smaller than America’s. Low measles vaccination in 3 southern border provinces causes 5 deaths

The Disease Control Department plans to rush measle vaccines to young school kids in the three southern border provinces after the disease outbreak killed five people there last month, the department chief said.

Director-general Thongchai Kiratihattayakorn said on Saturday that measles and German measles were communicable diseases of concern in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces because of the low vaccination rate in the Muslim-dominated southern border provinces. Continued …

The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) warned 11 provinces in the central region about the increasing water discharge rate from the Chao Phraya Dam, a move that aims to mitigate the effects of super typhoon Yagi.

The director of Mongkutwattana Hospital in Bangkok has vowed to lock defiant smokers on his premises in “gas chambers” until they inhale 100% of their cigarette smoke.

Fisherman survives four days at sea off Satun

A fisherman miraculously survived after floating in the sea off Satun in southern Thailand for four days. Despite exhausting his strength, he managed to stay alive by drinking from a floating bottle of sugarcane juice. His ordeal concluded when waves carried him to Bulon Mai Phai Island.

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn insists on increasing the daily wage to 400 baht nationwide on Oct. 1 despite concerns that the rise will harm businesses.

Gold price falls as baht strengthens

The domestic gold price has dipped by 2,000 baht per baht weight in just over a month, as the Thai currency appreciated by more than 7% during the period, with the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) noting prices may continue to decline if the value of the baht appreciates.

The Revenue Department aims to propose a draft act on additional tax to the Cabinet soon, which will cover global minimum tax (GMT) on multinational companies.

Hotel Prices Rise as Phuket Sees 42% Increase in Foreign Tourists H1 2024

Carlos Martinez, director of research and advisory at Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand) Co., a Thai real estate advisory firm, commented on the overall tourism industry in Phuket for the first half of 2024, stating that the industry has recovered strongly with a total of 4.3 million tourists, which is only 7% below pre-COVID-19 levels.

The number of foreign tourists increased by over 42% year-on-year to 2.6 million, close to pre-COVID figures. The improvement in air transportation capacity is expected to support further growth in international tourist numbers in the second half of the year. Continued …

Thai police probe Russian mafia link to tourist’s death on Phuket

A Russian tourist found dead in Phuket a few days ago was possibly the victim of a mafia hit, police suggested. The body of 27-year-old Ilia Orlov showed signs of torture and was left in the open in a popular tourist area near Karon Beach.

Which EV markets and models have performed strongest so far in 2024?

In terms of new electric vehicle (EV) volumes, no market was able to pull ahead of China. In the first six months of 2024, the country recorded nearly 4.3 million plug-in deliveries. This meant that battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) made up 43% of the market. BEVs alone made up 25% of sales in this period.

With 41,000 EV registrations, Thailand’s plug-in market recorded growth of 5% in the first half of 2024. Two Russians among 10 killed in Phuket landslide

Ten people were killed when their houses were buried by a landslide in Phuket province on Friday. The landslide from the Nakkerd Mountain killed two Russians, six Myanmars and one Thai citizen. As for the 10th deceased, there is no information regarding nationality yet.

Army lawyer joins Hua Hin pub death probe

The Royal Thai Army has appointed a military lawyer to monitor a police investigation into the fatal shooting of one of its intelligence officers in an unlicensed Hua Hin bar that was open after the legal closing time. The army sargeant reportedly was shot in the back of the head.

Jakkrit Worakul, 34, is accused of shooting SM1 Rojchanaphon Rojchanapanich to death inside a pub on Soi 80, a nightlife area just off Phetkasem Road in Hua Hin. The incident also injured three others. Continued …

Thailand Open tennis returns to Hua Hin in September

The Thailand Open tennis tournament will be held next month at Arena Hua Hin, said Suwat Liptapanlop, honorary president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT).

Nine confirmed dead in Chachoengsao plane crash

A small plane carrying nine people, including passengers and crew, crashed just 10 minutes after takeoff in Chachoengsao province yesterday. All on board are dead. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, when officials began the grim task of recovering the wreckage in Moo 6, Ban Khao Din, Bang Pakong district.

Initially, the bodies of the passengers were nowhere to be found, sparking concern. However, it was soon discovered that the aircraft had plunged nose-first into the earth, embedding itself more than 10 meters deep in the muddy ground. Continued …

Deadly new mpox strain hits Thailand

Thailand confirmed its first case of a potentially deadlier strain of mpox, marking Asia’s first encounter with the virus variant known as Clade 1b. This development follows hot on the heels of the first reported case outside Africa, in Sweden, just a week ago.

Since last year, mpox has claimed at least 450 lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo, spreading across previously unaffected regions, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. Bangkok to Beijing train: Mekong River railway bridge opens

Travelers are one step closer to a train journey from Bangkok to Beijing as a new railway bridge over the Mekong River has opened, linking Thailand and Laos by rail for the first time. With the launch of this new service, passengers can now enjoy a 12-hour train journey from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Station to Khamsavath Station in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The 10,000-baht handout under the digital wallet scheme would kick-off in September, with priority being given to vulnerable sections of society, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra revealed on Thursday. Duck egg prices up again to 5.10 baht an egg

The Egg Duck Assn. yesterday informed its members about the new farm gate prices for duck eggs. The price per egg has been increased by 10 satang, bringing the total to 5.10 baht per egg. This price adjustment is effective immediately, and any further changes will be communicated by the association.

Changan to open Thai EV factory next March

Changan Automobile’s first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia is set to open in Thailand in the first quarter of next year, with a total investment budget exceeding 10 billion baht.

“We expect to start producing battery EVs in March 2025,” said Shen Xinghua, managing director of Changan Auto Southeast Asia, a subsidiary of the Chongqing-based company. A disagreement Sunday morning at an unlicensed Soi 80 Hua Hin pub led to the fatal shooting of Sgt. Major Rojchanaphon Rojchanaphanit, an intelligence officer at Thanarat Camp. The commotion at Tiny Club saw police commissioner Jakkrit Worawongphanitkul allegedly pulling a 9 mm. pistol, fatally shooting Punch and injuring two other patrons.

At approximately 4 am , Hua Hin Police Station received a report about a dispute turning violent in the Tiny Club on Soi Hua Hin 80. A Thai court will this week decide if the Southeast Asian nation will continue business as usual or be tipped into a renewed period of political uncertainty, when it assesses whether tycoon Srettha Thavisin should continue as prime minister.

The Constitutional Court will rule on whether Srettha violated “ethical standards” by appointing to Cabinet former lawyer Pichit Chuenban, who was jailed for contempt of court following a bribery attempt. The southern dual-track route from Nakhon Pathom to Chumphon covering 421 kilometers was opened to passengers on Monday, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said.

Inward immigration may be the only thing that can halt Thailand’s economic decline

As Thailand’s government launched its digital wallet scheme, and with results for the second quarter expected shortly, maybe it is time to look at the bigger picture and confront Thailand’s economic prospects. In short, the genuine likelihood is that its GDP may at some point go into decline if it fails to overcome its population crisis.

This week, an Economic Intelligence Center (EIC) study from Siam Commercial Bank suggested that Thailand is on the same road as Japan. It suggested weak growth extending until 2050.
