Bangkok to Ban Trucks in ‘Low Emission’ Zones Amid Pollution Rise

In response to heightened air pollution, Bangkok is set to implement a new ban on trucks entering designated “low emission” zones. This move, introduced by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), targets the looming threat of PM2.5 pollution during the cool season, spanning from November to March.

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt announced that the zones would be declared in districts like Dusit, Phaya Thai, and Phra Nakhon when PM2.5 levels reach the red level (90µg/m3) for two consecutive days. Star chef Jay Fai denies she’s retiring, closing her restaurant

Michelin-star chef Supinya “Jay Fai” Junsuta has denied reports she plans to close her celebrated restaurant in Bangkok next year, saying she may be old but remains very healthy and cooks up to 15 hours a day. She said the reports were wrong. A reporter had earlier asked her if she had any thoughts about retiring, pointing out she was already in her 80s.

DSI maintains iCon Group’s business is a pyramid scheme

The screening committee of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has classified iCon Group’s business model as a pyramid scheme, in breach of the Emergency Decree on Borrowing.

Citizenships for 483,000 migrant workers and ethnic children born in Thailand

The Thai cabinet has decided to grant Thai citizenship to about 483,000 migrants who have been living in Thailand since 1984 and children born in Thailand to parents in ethnic minority groups.

Spokesman for the prime minister’s office, Jirayu Huangsap, said that since these documented migrant workers have been working in Thailand for a long time, the cabinet feels that it is appropriate to grant them Thai citizenship, so they can travel freely and still beneficially contribute to the development of the Thai economy. Bangkok Bank official sees positive signs for Thai economy

Kobsak Pootrakool, executive vice president, company secretary, and executive director at Bangkok Bank Pcl. (BBL), has commented on Thailand’s economic outlook, noting that it is showing positive signs.

With planning well underway for the 2025 edition of Japan Expo Thailand, every effort is being made to offer more opportunities for cultural exchanges and business collaboration, event organizer G-Yu Creative said on Tuesday. The company’s CEO and founder Yupharet Eakturapakal said the event has received a good response from Thai and Japanese people, as well as foreign visitors, over the past decade.

Starbucks Thailand is planning to open 30 stores a year, even as competition in the country’s coffee market intensifies. Nednapa Srisamai, managing director of Starbucks Thailand, said the company believes the country’s coffee market is still growing, with competition intensifying as new players are constantly getting on the bandwagon.

Phuket Tourism Forecast to Surpass Pre-Pandemic Revenue in 2024

Tourism in Phuket is on track to surpass revenue levels seen in 2019, with visitor numbers almost reaching pre-pandemic levels, according to the Phuket Tourist Assn. Thanet Tantipiriyakit, the association’s president, announced that Phuket has shifted toward attracting quality tourists. Despite a slight dip in visitors, total tourist spending has increased compared to 2019.

Data from the Department of Tourism indicates that Phuket’s tourism generated 246 billion baht in the first half of the year. With anticipated monthly spending of 50 billion baht during November and December, the year’s revenue could hit the 500 billion baht target. Continued …

Tourists’ Visa card spending surges 90%

Inbound tourists’ spending on Visa credit cards this year is expected to be 90% higher than the 2019 level, a higher rate than that of Thai travelers overseas, who were hampered by a sluggish economy.

Punnamas Vichitkulwongsa, country manager for Visa Thailand, said Thailand remains a preferred tourism destination among foreigners. The inbound market has grown significantly this year, given the 90% uptick in total Visa spending compared with 2019. Continued …

ASEAN trio agree on clean air initiative

Exports to US jumped 18.1% in September amid 1.1% overall growth

Thailand’s exports to the United States in September grew 18.1% year on year to the value of US$5.01 billion (169.13 billion baht), the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) said on Monday.

Overall, exports in September expanded 1.1% year on year to $25.98 billion (877.75 billion baht), the office added, as it predicted a 2% growth for this year. Imports in September stood at $25.59 billion (863.34 billion baht), up 9.9% compared to last year. Continued …

Thailand emerged as the largest exporter of agricultural products in Southeast Asia and the eighth-largest globally, thanks in part to its free trade agreements (FTAs).

Southeast Asia’s energy landscape continues to be defined by its reliance on fossil fuels despite international efforts to promote cleaner alternatives. According to the IEA’s 2024 Southeast Asia Energy Outlook, fossil fuels have played a central role in meeting the region’s rapidly increasing energy demand over the past two decades. From 2010 to 2023, the region’s energy needs were primarily addressed through coal, oil, and natural gas, with coal being the dominant source.

By the end of 2025, an estimated 85 million electric vehicles (EVs), including cars, buses, vans and heavy trucks, are expected to be on the road, according to the latest forecast from U.S.-based research firm Gartner Inc. released on Monday.

The cabinet approved a package to help flood victims yesterday, both individuals and businesses in 50 provinces, which includes tax exemptions, soft loans, debt moratoria, interest rate cuts and loan guarantees.

An elephant overturned a pickup truck on the side of the road with the driver inside, as it is believed that the latter did not wait for the animal to cross the road. The incident happened about 128 kilometers east of the capital Bangkok in rural Chachoengsao province Saturday evening.

Persistent rain has caused flooding 20-40 centimeters deep in Cha Am district of Phetchaburi and Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan, and on nearby sections of the Phetkasem Highway.

People in the south are being warned to brace for torrential rains that started on Wednesday and will continue until Saturday, potentially triggering flash floods.

Thailand won its bid for the UN Human Rights Council with the highest number of votes — 177 — for a three-year term to promote and protect human rights worldwide. The decision was announced by the UN after a secret ballot on Wednesday.

Bitcoin mining dens that stole 100 million baht of electricity raided

A team of Department of Special Investigation (DSI) police, together with Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) officials, raided houses and commercial buildings at several locations across Kanchanaburi that had been turned into Bitcoin mining dens and effectively stolen over 100 million baht in electricity annually.

Thailand eyes $300-billion gas field frozen by Cambodia dispute

The Pheu Thai-led coalition government will restart negotiations with Cambodia to explore an offshore oil and gas field with at least US$300 billion worth of reserves that the two countries have been squabbling over since the 1970s.

Finance Ministry calls for weaker baht, wants 2024 rate cut

The Ministry of Finance ratcheted up pressure on the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to cut interest rates to boost the economy and weaken the baht, just a day after an influential former governor warned against government meddling in the central bank.

“It’s highly possible they will cut this year either this meeting or next meeting,” Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul said in an interview in Bangkok on Wednesday, a week ahead of the BoT’s next monetary policy decision. “A 25-basis point cut would be a good start, but whether that is enough or not, we will need to keep monitoring and adjusting.” Continued …

Residents and tourists flocked to Cha Am Beach in Phetchaburi Province yesterday to catch various sea creatures washed ashore due to a phenomenon known locally as “nuea bia,” or “crowding water.”

Chiang Mai’s Ping River recedes, but downstream areas still at risk

Chiang Mai authorities announced that the Ping River, which had broken its banks and flooded the province earlier, has dropped to 3.85 meters, though downstream areas were still at risk of flooding. Muang Chiang Mai Municipality announced that the river’s level at the P1 measuring station by the Nawarat Bridge stood at 3.85 meters as of 10am on Monday.

The Chiang Mai Irrigation Office expected the water level to further drop to 3.7 meters by 3pm and said that if there was no more rain upstream, the Ping River should soon return to its normal level. Continued …

Hotel occupancy rate in Chiang Mai down 30%

Hotels in Chiang Mai saw the average occupancy rate decline by 30% over a three-day period of severe floods covering Oct. 4-6, which heavily impacted 1,500-2,000 rooms in the province.

Headline inflation quickens in September

Thailand’s annual headline inflation quickened in September due mainly to higher prices of diesel and some vegetables, the Commerce Ministry said on Monday, and was still below the central bank’s target range of 1% to 3%.

The headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.61% in September from a year earlier, after August’s annual increase of 0.35%, and missed a forecast rise of 0.80% in a Reuters poll. Continued …

Thai firms call for urgent and robust action on cheap Chinese imports as manufacturing shrinks

Business leaders fear the government lacks the mettle to follow through on promises made before the new government was formed regarding cheap Chinese goods being dumped on the Thai market. In particular, they are concerned about a recent tête-à-tête between the new Ministry of Commerce Pichai Naripthaphan and the Chinese ambassador to Thailand.

Thailand’s casino bill faces overhaul

The Fiscal Policy Office has completed public hearings on the entertainment complex bill and will submit its results to the Cabinet soon, a well-informed source said.

The source explained that the FPO has categorized the results of the hearing into 45 main points, which it will ask the Cabinet to consider and select for improving the draft. Earlier, the House of Representatives had studied and concluded that the government should allow entertainment complexes with casinos to be set up in the kingdom to attract foreigners and generate more revenue. TAT seeks 10 million arrivals in final quarter

Transforming Plastic Waste Management in Rayong

Researchers from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi have conducted an in-depth study on enhancing plastic waste (PW) management in Rayong, a coastal city in Thailand. The study aims to improve the current systems of plastic waste handling by exploring ways to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while increasing economic value.

The city, located on Thailand’s eastern Gulf Coast, faces challenges in managing significant amounts of plastic waste, much of which is either incinerated for energy or ends up in landfills. By analyzing existing practices and proposing new strategies, the researchers present a roadmap to transition Rayong’s waste-management system toward a more efficient and environmentally sustainable model. Thailand braces for severe weather with heavy rain, strong winds

Thailand faces severe weather conditions today, as the Meteorological Department (TMD) issues warnings of heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flash floods across 51 provinces. The northern and northeastern regions are expected to be particularly affected, with rain predicted to cover 70% of these areas.

TMD forecasted the weather for the next 24 hours, declaring that a moderate southwest monsoon is covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. Additionally, a low-pressure area over northern Vietnam is contributing to the adverse weather conditions in Thailand. Continued …

Elderly woman loses two houses in recent flooding in Sukhothai

Nittorn Intarachuen, 78, a resident of Village 6 in Tha Thong subdistrict in Sukhothai province, is suffering a deep sense of loss after watching her houses being washed away by strong currents in the recent flooding, leaving her just the three sets of clothes that she managed to grab. She saidshe has nothing left, as all her belongings and the two houses were washed away by the swollen Yom River.

Chiang Mai dam opens spillway for 1st time in 13 years

Communities along the Mae Ngat and Ping rivers have been told to brace for possible floods as authorities decided to discharge excess water through Mae Ngat Somboon Chon reservoir in Chiang Mai province for the first time in 13 years today.

Firms struggle to deal with flood damage

Businesses are monitoring the severe floods in the north and northeast as several areas continue to experience heavy rains. TCP Group subsidiary Durbell Co., a distribution and warehouse company, said most of the company’s dealers that are affected by the floods are located near rivers.

Over 300 pigs have died after being submerged for three days due to a sudden flood at a farm in the northern province of Lampang, causing significant damage estimated at 21 million baht.

The incident occurred at Krissana Farm in Ban Watthana, Sobprab subdistrict, Sobprab district, Lampang province. PEA leads network partners to restore electricity system for flood victims

From the situation of flash floods, forest runoff and landslides from Typhoon Yangi and Typhoon Soulik, more than 100,000 people in the northern and northeastern regions have been affected, causing widespread damage, such as: electrical systems in homes or even Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) distribution systems.

Mud removers warned over price-gouging in flood-hit provinces

Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has instructed officials at Thailand’s Department of Internal Trade (DIT) to take legal action against backhoe operators in flood-hit provinces for increasing mud-removal fees.

Indian move puts more pressure on Thai rice prices

India is preparing to resume exports of non-basmati white rice, as inventories in the world’s biggest exporter of the grain surge and farmers prepare to harvest a new crop. New Delhi set a floor price for non-basmati exports at $490 per ton, a government order said.

Thai Airways International will no longer keep its loss-ridden Thai Smile Airways budget airline, but will terminate it now that it has transferred a fleet of 20 Airbus A320 planes to THAI, the parent airline’s chief executive officer said.

THAI CEO Chai Eamsiri said that after the fleet was transferred to be under operation by THAI, they generated more income than when they were under operation of Thai Smile. Scientists Unveil Countdown To Save Oceans From Plastic Pollution

A report published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin by researchers from Japan’s Kyushu University has, for the first time, established a clear numerical target for addressing global marine plastic pollution. Through their mapping of plastic waste movement and its impacts on the oceans, the team determined that a minimum 32% reduction in plastic littering is required by 2035 to avert further harm to marine environments.

Marine plastic pollution has been a growing issue for the world, and unless considerable interventions are placed the situation will only get worse. For several years, Prof. Atsuhiko Isobe from Kyushu University’s Research Institute for Applied Mechanics has been working to monitor and track plastic pollution in the ocean. Bangkok and five central provinces at risk of flooding until Oct 2

Bangkok plus five provinces in the central region could be at risk of inundation from today to Oct. 2, the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) warned on Friday.

The department expects rising seawater, isolated heavy rains triggered by the southwest monsoon, and a deluge from the north to increase the water levels of the Chao Phraya, Mae Klong and Tha Chin rivers. Continued …

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has officially expanded the 30-baht universal healthcare coverage scheme, allowing residents in 46 provinces to receive healthcare services at all registered clinics, pharmacies, or healthcare units, in addition to hospitals.

Thailand to legalize undocumented workers, children from four countries

FED (Foundation for Education and Development) in Thailand announced that the Thai government has allowed undocumented workers from four countries, including Myanmar, to make new registrations and accompanying children under the age of 18 to stay legally in Thailand.

For workers whose permits will expire on Feb. 13, 2025, the duration of each residence and work permit will be extended twice from two years to four years, and the period for changing jobs will be increased from one month previously to two months. Continued …

Man Dies After Attack by Mixed-Breed Stray Dogs in Ubon Ratchathani

A 49-year-old man was found dead in his home in Ubon Ratchathani after being mauled by two mixed-breed dogs. The man, whose identity has been withheld, was discovered face down in his single-story house on Wednesday, according to local police reports on Friday.

Police Bus Bombing in Pattani, Four Officers Injured

The 10,000 baht digital wallet handout scheme should give the industrial sector a 0.1% boost, the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) said on Friday. Premier says Bt10,000 second phase won’t be cut

Police guarding banks to stop loan sharks from grabbing 10,000-baht handout

All police stations nationwide are being alerted to guard banks where “fragile” groups of people are withdrawing 10,000 baht handouts, after finding out that loan sharks were waiting there to grab the money. A Maha Sarakham police team tightened security at the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and other bank branches in this central northeastern region.

Police Col. Kraithong Chaisingh, head of Maha Sarakham city police station, said he sent a team of policemen to maintain law and order at this BAAC branch, which was crowded with farmers, and other bank branches and locations where vulnerable groups of people and the disabled are streaming in to check whether the 10,000 baht giveaway had been deposited before queuing up to withdraw money either via ATM if they have a card or wait to do so from a teller. Majority of Thais don’t intend to go off meat during annual vegetarian festival

World Bank sees $642-billion inflows for Thailand to pursue low-carbon economy

The World Bank has called on Thailand to hasten its shift toward a low-carbon economy, highlighting substantial opportunities for sustainable financial investment of US$632 billion. Thailand to introduce carbon tax to curb emissions this year

Thailand is set to implement a carbon tax this year, Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul announced at the Road to Net Zero 2024: The Extraordinary Green event. Thailand sees 1.9 million new electric vehicle registrations, a 13% decline

As many as 1,876,356 electric vehicles (EVs) were registered in Thailand in the first eight months of 2024, a nearly 13% drop compared to the same period last year. The Department of Land Transport (DLT) said on Friday that registrations had declined by 280,091 vehicles from the 2,156,447 in the same period last year.

Commerce Ministry to explore why pork prices are so high

The Commerce Ministry is inspecting pork prices nationwide in a bid to reduce expenses for Thai consumers and boost the competitiveness of producers.

Ministry spokesperson Wittayakorn Maneenetr said on Tuesday that the decision was taken after Thailand’s pork price was found to be higher than in other countries. The government has estimated the total damage from the floods in the north to be about 3 billion baht. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said yesterday that the inundation in the north caused significant damage due to flash flooding.

People living along the riverside in Chiang Mai are being strongly advised to move their belongings, including vehicles, to high ground as the Ping River was rising rapidly and expected to flood into the city on Tuesday night.

Pit Bull Attacks & Kills 67-Year-Old Woman Cycling in Pathum Thani

A 67-year-old woman in Pathum Thani was fatally attacked by a Pit Bull while cycling near her home in Chiang Rak Noi, Sam Khok District. The woman was found with severe bite wounds over most of her body. Despite efforts by emergency responders to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

3 million to get handout funds today

The first 3 million needy and disabled people — out of a total of 14.5 million — will receive their 10,000-baht handout under the government’s digital wallet program today, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

10,000-Baht Grant for Over 30 Million People Unlikely This Year

It is unlikely that over 30 million Thai citizens will receive a 10,000-baht grant under the second phase of the Pheu Thai-led populist handout scheme this year, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat stated yesterday.

Out of approximately 45 million Thais, around 14.5 million will start receiving the funds through their state welfare cards today, with the remaining 30 million expected to wait until next year, according to Julapun. Thailand’s vehicle production, sales plummet over 20% in August

The manufacturing and sales of vehicles in Thailand fell by more than 20% in August compared to the same period last year, stats from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) show.

Authorities have closed 21 villas built illegally on Koh Samui, some of them housing foreign tenants who were ordered to leave. Municipal, military and ombudsman’s representatives on Tuesday posted closure notices at the villas, which are on Khao Ma Ngaen mountain in tambon Bo Phut of the tourist island.

PM says handout will give ‘jolt’ to economy

The launch of a 145-billion-baht handout program to needy people next week is certain to give a “jolt” to the economy, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Tuesday, as her government promised more stimulus measures ahead.

Final minimum wage decision due Friday

The national wage committee is scheduled to convene again on Friday, with the aim of introducing a 400-baht minimum wage among large employers nationwide on Oct. 1, as planned, according to Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

Industrial sentiment fell in August due to weak domestic demand, high production costs and floods, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said today.

The FTI said its industrial sentiment index dropped to 87.7 in August from 89.3 in July, when it had risen for the first time in four months. The world is headed toward uncharted waters
