Thai air force to battle surging fine dust pollution crisis

With fine dust pollution surging to alarming levels in Thailand, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has tasked the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) with spearheading the nation’s countermeasures. Air Force Chief, ACM Phanpakdee Pattanakul, confirmed the directive on Tuesday.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) revealed that the provinces of Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon are presently grappling with high levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (PM2.5). Power bills likely stable in 2024

Electricity bills in Thailand are unlikely to be trimmed from the existing rate, as the power tariff, which is used to calculate the bills, is expected to stay in a range of 4.2-4.25 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), says Khomgrich Tantravanich, secretary-general of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

The commission agreed earlier to reduce the power tariff to 4.2 baht a unit, down from 4.68 baht a unit, applicable from January to April. Continued …

Another bus overturns, 17 Chinese tourists, 3 Thais sustain injuries

A bus heading to a pier in Phuket overturned on Tuesday morning, injuring 17 Chinese tourists and three Thais, police said. The accident took place at around 8am on the outbound Thep Kasattree Road in Thalang district.

Thailand’s escalating smog crisis: Choking smog in 55 provinces

People in 55 of the 77 provinces were breathing dirty air this morning, with red-coded pollution levels in 20 provinces, mainly in the Central Plains.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 38.7 to 113.6 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the previous 24 hours. The government-set safe threshold is 37.5µg/m³. Continued …

Bottled water contains more plastic particles than thought

A typical one-liter (33-ounce) bottle of water contains some 240,000 plastic fragments on average, according to a new study. Many of those fragments have historically gone undetected, the researchers determined, suggesting that health concerns linked to plastic pollution may be dramatically underestimated.

The peer-reviewed study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to evaluate bottled water for the presence of “nanoplastics” — plastic particles under 1 micrometer in length, or one-seventieth the width of a human hair. The findings show that bottled water could contain up to 100 times more plastic particles than previously estimated, as earlier studies only accounted for microplastics, or pieces between 1 and 5,000 micrometers. Hua Hin Grab driver praised for trying to save foreigner

Council of State says no go-ahead for digital wallet yet

The Council of State’s secretary-general rejected claims that the government’s advisory board has given the go-ahead to legislation allowing a 500- billion-baht loan to finance the digital wallet scheme.

Pakorn Nilprapunt, secretary-general of the Council of State office, told reporters on Tuesday that the council’s response to the Finance Ministry was confidential and only the ministry could disclose the details. “However, it definitely does not contain any indication of a ‘greenlight’,” Pakorn added. Thai online vendors required to file taxes from 2024

Online vendors are required to file taxes for the year 2024, with the Revenue Department mandating online platforms to disclose income data. This directive, effective from Jan. 1, applies to all businesses, including e-commerce, food and product delivery services like Shopee, Lazada, Grab, and TikTok.

These platforms, registered in Thailand and having an annual income exceeding 1 billion baht, are obligated to maintain special accounts. These accounts should display the income data of the online vendors selling goods or services on these platforms and must be submitted to the Revenue Department within 150 days from the end of the accounting period. Over 600,000 foreign tourists arrive in Thailand on first week of 2024

Thailand has welcomed over 600,000 foreign visitors during the first week of 2024, with the Chinese topping the list for the first week of the year. According to a report, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Thailand’s tourism minister, says a total of 605,537 have arrived in the kingdom in the period Jan. 1 – 7.

After over two decades of helping wildlife, Edwin Wiek and the team at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) show no signs of slowing down as they continue to rescue, rehabilitate and release wildlife in Phetchaburi and the surrounding areas. Free advanced cancer treatments piloted in four provinces

Cancer patients in four pilot provinces can now seek free plaque brachytherapy and robotic surgery for the treatment of prostate, colon, liver, pancreatic and bile duct cancer at state hospitals under the “gold card” universal health scheme, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said today.

November Thai rice exports soar 68% in value

November’s Thai rice exports surged 67.9% in value from the same period last year to US$632 million (23.01 billion baht), according to the Commerce Ministry. Rice exports for the first 11 months of the year rose 29.6% to $4.61 billion (159.55 billion baht).

Swedes in Thailand: Holiday Nightmare

Twenty-year-old Linnea Pakermo had been traveling around Thailand for two months with her friend. For Christmas, they would spend the holiday with her friend’s family, who came to Thailand to visit. But on Dec. 24, water started taking over the boat that was supposed to transport them to the island Koh Lanta.

At 1:30 pm, on Monday, Chutidet Kamonchanut, the director of the Office of Conservation Area Management No. 15, officially welcomed the first group of tourists for cave exploring at the deeper chambers at Tham Luang National Park, Mae Sai, Chiang Rai.

Seven boats sink in Gulf and Andaman Sea in four days, eight people still missing

Six tour boats and a fishing vessel have sunk in the Gulf and the Andaman Sea in the past four days. Two passengers, a skipper and five crew are still missing.

The “Sawan Tour” dive boat, carrying 16 tourists, mostly foreigners, on a diving trip near Mu Ko Surin National Park in the Andaman Sea, off Phang-nga province, sank on Dec. 23. Sixteen tourists were rescued and two are missing. Continued …

Seventy Three Tourists Rescued after Speedboat Capsized in Satun

A tourist speedboat capsized near Bubu Island, about 3 kilometers from Satun’s Lipe Island, Sunday. The boat carried 73 tourists, including three children and four crew members.

The Navy’s 491st Special Warfare Squadron quickly responded to the emergency, rescuing everyone on board. The capsizing was caused by strong waves, leading to a breach in the hull. The passengers, all wearing life jackets, were safely transferred to another speedboat. Continued …

Cool weather continues, rain for the Deep South

The cool weather in most of Thailand will continue today, with temperatures dropping by 1-2 degrees Celsius in the north, northeast, east and central regions.

WFFT rescues 15 big cats from northern Thailand facility

Twelve tigers and three leopards who have spent their lives in captivity have been rescued from a tiger farm in Thailand.

The undisclosed captive tiger facility in northern Thailand was visited by government officials on Dec. 16 following legal action over alleged illegal wildlife trading. Veterinary teams and wildlife experts from Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) were on hand to rescue the seized animals, in the first part of the largest tiger rescue operation by an NGO in Thailand’s history. PM2.5 crisis first major test for Srettha’s government

The air pollution crisis in Thailand, specifically the hazardous PM2.5 particles, presents a formidable challenge to new Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his cabinet. This issue transcends mere environmental concerns, morphing into a litmus test for the government’s commitment to public health and its willingness to confront entrenched industrial and agricultural interests.

PM2.5 particles are fine particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. These particles are so small that they can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, posing serious health risks. 33 provinces still blanketed by thick smog

Dangerous levels of ultrafine dust covered 33 of the 77 provinces this morning, an improvement on 47 provinces on Tuesday morning, and the peak pollution level was also down.

Sarath Ratanavadi, CEO of Gulf Energy, Thailand’s third largest energy producer, is Thailand’s richest man for the fifth year in a row, with a net worth of 190.8-billion baht, mostly in shareholdings in Stock Exchange of Thailand listed companies, according to the Money and Banking magazine’s December edition.

Cabinet delays decision on minimum daily wage increase

Though Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn presented the new minimum daily wage rates to the Cabinet on Tuesday, he admitted that they need to be reconsidered and revised.

The rates were set by a tripartite committee comprising representatives of employers, employees and the government sector. The committee resolved on Friday to increase the daily minimum wage nationwide within the range of 330 to 370 baht based on provinces from Jan. 1 onward. It’s 5:50am and I’m in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand, following a single-file column of russet-robed monks as they tread barefoot down the red-dirt road that runs between their monastery and the nearby village.
