Hua Hin’s creative crackdown on monkey mayhem

Innovative measures are underway to address issues of monkey disturbances in the Hua Hin area. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), in collaboration with the Hua Hin municipality, has launched a unique operation employing remote control traps to relocate monkeys from Khao Takiab and Khao Hin Lek Fai.

China’s Runergy New Energy Technology has shut down the fourth phase of one of its solar panel factories in Thailand and has partially suspended operations at one of its photovoltaic cell plants, as the world’s fifth-largest solar cell supplier adjusts to changing global market conditions, particularly in the U.S., industry insiders said.

Thai Exports Continued to Grow in September

In September, Thailand’s exports totaled USD25,983.2 million, reflecting a modest year-over-year growth of 1.1%. This growth slowed from the previous month’s 7% and fell short of analysts’ expectations of 2.9%.

Notably, the total export value for the first three quarters of the year reached USD223,176 million, indicating a 3.9% growth on a customs basis. The decline in growth can be attributed to factors such as a slowdown in computer exports and the first year-on-year decline in gold exports in five months. Continued …

Thai pet food exports jump 31% to over 80 billion baht

Thai pet food exports surged 31.8% year-on-year in the first nine months, reaching 80.61 billion baht, the Commerce Ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) reported on Monday.

Thailand’s Café Amazon looks set to achieve its goal of opening 300 new stores in 2024 after a third successive quarter of strong outlet growth. The PTT Oil and Retail Business (PTT OR)-owned coffee chain opened 69 net new stores in the three months ended Sept. 30 to reach 4,749 outlets across 12 markets.

Café Amazon has opened 289 net new stores in the first nine months of 2024, mostly in Thailand. Bangkok-based Café Amazon currently operates 4,339 outlets in Thailand – 54% of which are in PTT OR-owned petrol stations. Loy Krathong expected to draw 36% more flights than last year

Flight bookings to Thailand are expected to surge by 36% during the Loy Krathong festival, which falls on Friday, government deputy spokesman Karom Polpornklang said on Monday.

According to an Aeronautical Radio of Thailand forecast, 73,500 flights, or 2,450 flights a day, are expected in November, up 36% year on year. Suvarnabhumi Airport is expected to see the highest flight numbers during the period at 6,170, followed by Don Mueang Airport with 3,760 flights. Continued …

Early Check-In Coming to Suvarnabhumi Airport by February

Suvarnabhumi International Airport will begin offering an early check-in service by February. This new service allows passengers to check in up to 24 hours before their flight. The Transport Ministry explained that the goal is to make travel easier and to cut down on congestion at Thailand’s main international airport.

Unsafe levels of fine dust blanketed most parts of Greater Bangkok this morning, trapped by stagnant air, and expected to continue until Nov. 20.

EGAT keen to expedite 14 solar farm projects

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) wants to accelerate the development of 14 planned floating solar farm projects with a total capacity of 2,656 megawatts on the reservoirs of its seven hydroelectric dams under the new national power development plan (PDP) of 2024.

Bangkok police detained seven individuals yesterday, including six officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, linked to an elaborate Bt300-million extortion scheme involving a fake search warrant and passport forgery accusations. Bangkokians will soon need to shell out 60 baht per month for garbage collection instead of 20 baht now that the Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC) has approved a long overdue hike.

Thai economy continued to grow in Q3, but slowed in September

Thailand’s economy in the third quarter this year expanded from the previous quarter, but economic activities began slowing in September, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) said in its monthly report on economic and monetary conditions.

The central bank said the trend in September was mainly the decline of exports after strong growth in August. Private consumption also declined, it said, particularly in durables, consistent with a decrease in manufacturing production, while private investment was stable. Continued …

The Thai industrial sector is at risk of flood and drought triggered by global warming, and those disasters were likely to become more severe in the future, the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) warned on Wednesday.

Chinese-grown Shine Muscat grapes contaminated with dangerous chemicals

Shine Muscat grapes imported from China have been found to be heavily laced with dangerous chemicals, including chlorpyrifos, the Thai Pesticides Alert Network (Thai-Pan) and the Foundation for Consumers announced.

The two consumer protection organizations recently conducted laboratory tests on 24 samples of the juicy and popular grapes purchased from retail outlets, vendors and wet markets. Nine samples were imported from China, while the remaining 15 samples were imported from unknown sources. Continued …

Gold prices have taken a nosedive in Thailand, with gold ornaments now pegged at 44,100 baht per baht weight. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reports a 300-baht drop from yesterday, putting an end to the recent upward streak.

One of the cannabis shop owners in Phuket who fell victim to two foreign thieves, yesterday tracked down the suspects and physically assaulted them at their accommodation.

Thai poverty levels decreased in 2023

A total of 2.39 million Thais were classified as poor in 2023, a significant decrease from the previous year of 3.79 million people, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its latest report on Thailand’s poverty and disparity situation. The percentage of the poor population in Thailand also went down from 5.4% in 2022 to 3.4% in 2023, the NESDC reported.

The council attributed the decrease in the poor to continued economic expansion, especially in the agricultural sector, which has the highest percentage of low-income workers. It added that the government’s state welfare card scheme in 2023 accepted applications from those who had missed the application deadlines in the previous rounds, allowing more people to gain access to state-funded services and benefits. Thailand’s vehicle production hits the brakes

The automotive industry in Thailand has experienced a significant downturn in vehicle production, with September seeing a total of 122,277 units produced, marking a 25.5% decrease from the same period last year.

The Ministry of Finance has rolled out new registrations for the 2025 state welfare card, aiming to wrap up all the eligibility checks by March 31 next year. A fresh round of financial lifelines is coming with 1,545 baht heading straight into the pockets of those who qualify.

Costco Shipping Ports Ltd. has acquired 12.5% and 30% ownership holdings in Thai Laem Chabang Terminal Co., (TLT) and Hutchison Laem Chabang Terminal (HLT).

ZHAO Fengnian, the chief accountant, signed the project agreement with collaborating firms at the project signing event in Vietnam on Wednesday, in the presence of ZHU Tao, the chairman of the board of Costco Shipping Ports. The consideration for the acquisition is approximately $110 million, which includes the Berth A2
in TLT, Berths A3, C1-C2 and D1-D3 in HLT, where D1-D3 is partly under construction. Continued …

In a major crackdown on human trafficking, police from the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division raided two bars in Hua Hin on charges of covertly offering underage prostitution services to foreign tourists. The bars were targeted following an extensive investigation based on intelligence reports that indicated illegal activities were taking place behind the facade of normal bar operations.

New stimulus efforts readied

The Finance Ministry is preparing additional stimulus measures, including plans to promote tourism and encourage spending toward the end of the year, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

The Thai private sector says the Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s cutting of the policy rate by 25 basis points, from 2.50% to 2.25% per annum, is well suited to the country’s current economic situation and will help several sectors, notably exports and tourism.

Thai growth upgraded as cash handout improves outlook

Analysts have upgraded Thailand’s GDP forecast for this year and next to 2.8% and 3%, respectively, thanks to the government’s cash handout lifting the economy, but warned of an “economic cliff” in 2026 if no new growth engine is introduced.

The Board of Investment said that many foreign printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers have been seeking special privileges for their investments worth 162 billion baht over the past year. BOI Secretary-general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said on Wednesday that most of these circuit board manufacturers were from China or Taiwan, and they have applied for BOI privileges in 95 projects.

FedEx Expands Electric Vehicle Fleet in Thailand

Federal Express Corp., one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, has advanced toward its vehicle electrification goals by introducing four new zero-tailpipe emissions electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet in Thailand. The expansion builds on the success of its initial launch of EVs in 2022 as part of the company’s efforts to transition to an all-electric parcel pickup and delivery (PUD) fleet by 2040.

The new EVs will support parcel PUD operations within high-traffic areas in Bangkok and Pathum Thani such as Chaeng Watthana, Tiwanon, Lat Phrao, Ram Inthra, Ngam Wong Wan, Prasert Manukit, Sukhonthasawat, Thammasart, and Chiengrak. Consumer confidence index plunges to lowest in 14 months

The rising cost of living and the severe flooding in several areas of Thailand are among the reasons the consumer confidence index has once again dropped, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said on Thursday.

World Bank lowers Thailand’s GDP growth forecast from 2.8% to 2.4%

The World Bank has reduced Thailand’s GDP growth forecast for 2024 to 2.4%, while projecting that the Chinese economy will decline from 4.8% this year to 4.3% in 2025, owing to a weak property market and low consumer and investor confidence.

State revenue collection on course to hit target

The Finance Ministry is confident that revenue collection for fiscal 2024, which ended on Sept. 30, met its target as collections gradually improved, bolstered by higher contributions than expected from the Revenue Department and state-owned enterprises.

Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office, said the latest report on net revenue collection from the Finance Ministry indicates for the first 11 months of fiscal 2024 (October 2023 to August 2024), the government collected net revenue (after tax refunds) of 2.452 trillion baht, which is 17.4 billion baht or 0.7% less than the target. Thailand braces for severe weather with heavy rain, strong winds

Thailand faces severe weather conditions today, as the Meteorological Department (TMD) issues warnings of heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flash floods across 51 provinces. The northern and northeastern regions are expected to be particularly affected, with rain predicted to cover 70% of these areas.

TMD forecasted the weather for the next 24 hours, declaring that a moderate southwest monsoon is covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. Additionally, a low-pressure area over northern Vietnam is contributing to the adverse weather conditions in Thailand. Continued …

Elderly woman loses two houses in recent flooding in Sukhothai

Nittorn Intarachuen, 78, a resident of Village 6 in Tha Thong subdistrict in Sukhothai province, is suffering a deep sense of loss after watching her houses being washed away by strong currents in the recent flooding, leaving her just the three sets of clothes that she managed to grab. She saidshe has nothing left, as all her belongings and the two houses were washed away by the swollen Yom River.

Chiang Mai dam opens spillway for 1st time in 13 years

Communities along the Mae Ngat and Ping rivers have been told to brace for possible floods as authorities decided to discharge excess water through Mae Ngat Somboon Chon reservoir in Chiang Mai province for the first time in 13 years today.

Firms struggle to deal with flood damage

Businesses are monitoring the severe floods in the north and northeast as several areas continue to experience heavy rains. TCP Group subsidiary Durbell Co., a distribution and warehouse company, said most of the company’s dealers that are affected by the floods are located near rivers.

Flood kills 300 pigs at Lampang farm, causes 21 million baht loss

Over 300 pigs have died after being submerged for three days due to a sudden flood at a farm in the northern province of Lampang, causing significant damage estimated at 21 million baht.

The incident occurred at Krissana Farm in Ban Watthana, Sobprab subdistrict, Sobprab district, Lampang province. The farm, which housed approximately 3,000 pigs, was overwhelmed by floodwaters from the Wang River. PEA leads network partners to restore electricity system for flood victims

From the situation of flash floods, forest runoff and landslides from Typhoon Yangi and Typhoon Soulik, more than 100,000 people in the northern and northeastern regions have been affected, causing widespread damage, such as: electrical systems in homes or even Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) distribution systems.

The PEA has established an emergency 0perations center (EOC) to serve as a central management center for various matters, such as manpower, supplies, budget, and monitoring of situations and reporting on impacts. Mud removers warned over price-gouging in flood-hit provinces

Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has instructed officials at Thailand’s Department of Internal Trade (DIT) to take legal action against backhoe operators in flood-hit provinces for increasing mud-removal fees.

The biggest banks in the European Union have spent years quietly creating a new way to pay that could finally allow customers to ditch their Visa and Mastercard cards — the latest sign that the region is looking to dislodge two of the most valuable financial firms on the planet.

Five Covid-related fatalities were also reported in Thailand during the past week, bringing the death toll this year to 137. Dr. Thira Woratanarat, of the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University, advised that COVID-related hospital admissions have increased by 48.3% over the previous week.

On the last day of June 2022, I went to bed knowing that thousands of people were serving decades-long prison sentences for growing or distributing marijuana in Thailand. Indian move puts more pressure on Thai rice prices

India is preparing to resume exports of non-basmati white rice, as inventories in the world’s biggest exporter of the grain surge and farmers prepare to harvest a new crop. New Delhi set a floor price for non-basmati exports at $490 per ton, a government order said.

India on Friday also reduced the export duty on parboiled rice to 10% from 20% earlier, a move that will lower its export prices, increase shipments and force competing countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and Myanmar to reduce their prices, as well. Continued …

THAI to terminate Thai Smile for good, CEO says

Thai Airways International will no longer keep its loss-ridden Thai Smile Airways budget airline, but will terminate it now that it has transferred a fleet of 20 Airbus A320 planes to THAI, the parent airline’s chief executive officer said.

THAI CEO Chai Eamsiri said that after the fleet was transferred to be under operation by THAI, they generated more income than when they were under operation of Thai Smile. Scientists Unveil Countdown To Save Oceans From Plastic Pollution

A report published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin by researchers from Japan’s Kyushu University has, for the first time, established a clear numerical target for addressing global marine plastic pollution. Through their mapping of plastic waste movement and its impacts on the oceans, the team determined that a minimum 32% reduction in plastic littering is required by 2035 to avert further harm to marine environments.

Marine plastic pollution has been a growing issue for the world, and unless considerable interventions are placed the situation will only get worse. For several years, Prof. Atsuhiko Isobe from Kyushu University’s Research Institute for Applied Mechanics has been working to monitor and track plastic pollution in the ocean. In 2022, his research team reported that an estimated 25.3 million metric tons of plastic waste has entered our oceans, and nearly two-thirds of that cannot be monitored. Continued …

Overflowing Ping River continues to affect downtown Chiang Mai

The flooding triggered by the overflowing of the Ping River in Chiang Mai’s Mueang district is even worse than in 2011, according to a report. Korat faces water shortage with all its reservoirs only half full

While several provinces in the north are suffering serious flooding, especially Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima in the northeast is facing a water shortage with all of its 27 reservoirs now less than half full.

Roadside bomb injures eight soldiers in Narathiwat

Eight soldiers sustained injuries in a roadside explosion in Rangae district, Narathiwat, believed to be orchestrated by insurgents. The incident took place when an improvised bomb, tied to a power pole along a local road in Ban Hulu Pare, tambon Tanyongmat, was detonated as a military pickup truck carrying the soldiers drove past.

Mortgage growth forecast to plunge

Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research) expects 1.2% growth in mortgages within the commercial banking sector this year, the lowest level of expansion in 23 years. The low rate is attributed to the diminished purchasing power of home buyers.

Production index projected to decline 1% in 2024

Thailand’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) is likely to contract by 1% this year, given the declines recorded during the first eight months of the year, caused by a raft of economic problems and the impact of severe floods, says the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

A Life Changing Move to Rural Thailand

Charissa Enget needed to find an engineering course she could afford. She found one in rural Thailand, where she got a scholarship and living costs were low. Bangkok Restricts Street Vending to Low-Income Thais

Condo group calls for looser real estate lending rules

FTI proposes corporate tax exemption for businesses affected by flooding

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has proposed to the government that it make an exemption from paying corporate income tax, extends the period for the submission of tax returns and exempts import tariffs on machinery for businesses hardest hit by the flooding.

New expat tax regime may link visas and tax returns

The Revenue Department is preparing draft legislation to further its global tax initiative, including plans to tax all foreign residents on their worldwide income, irrespective of whether the money is remitted to Thailand. However, for most expats and those considering Thailand as a place to live, the discussion is only just beginning.

In the meantime, the key consideration is that for those who stay over 180 days in Thailand this year, a tax return is due by March 31, 2025. Certainly, at the very least, foreigners should have obtained and studied their country’s tax treaty with Thailand. Afterward, how the Revenue Department moves to impose its new powers remains to be seen. For instance, it may choose to link tax reporting with the issuance of long-term visas very shortly. Why is Thai healthcare so good?

Thai healthcare is among the most effective in the world. The average Thai can expect to live to 80, much longer than their regional counterpart (the Southeast Asian figure is 73) and even slightly longer than the average American and European (each roughly 79), according to the latest data from the United Nations.

Last year, a whopping 99.5% of the population of 72million was covered by health insurance. Remarkably, Thailand has achieved this as a developing country: its income per person was roughly $7,000 in 2023, more than 11 times smaller than America’s. Even in the middle of the pandemic in 2021, its public-health bill was 6% of GDP, compared with 17% in America and 11% in the European Union. Continued …

Low measles vaccination in 3 southern border provinces causes 5 deaths

The Disease Control Department plans to rush measle vaccines to young school kids in the three southern border provinces after the disease outbreak killed five people there last month, the department chief said.

Director-general Thongchai Kiratihattayakorn said on Saturday that measles and German measles were communicable diseases of concern in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces because of the low vaccination rate in the Muslim-dominated southern border provinces. Continued …

Fisherman survives four days at sea off Satun

A fisherman miraculously survived after floating in the sea off Satun in southern Thailand for four days. Despite exhausting his strength, he managed to stay alive by drinking from a floating bottle of sugarcane juice. His ordeal concluded when waves carried him to Bulon Mai Phai Island.

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn insists on increasing the daily wage to 400 baht nationwide on Oct. 1 despite concerns that the rise will harm businesses.

Gold price falls as baht strengthens

Carlos Martinez, director of research and advisory at Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand) Co., a Thai real estate advisory firm, commented on the overall tourism industry in Phuket for the first half of 2024, stating that the industry has recovered strongly with a total of 4.3 million tourists, which is only 7% below pre-COVID-19 levels.

Which EV markets and models have performed strongest so far in 2024?

In terms of new electric vehicle (EV) volumes, no market was able to pull ahead of China. In the first six months of 2024, the country recorded nearly 4.3 million plug-in deliveries. This meant that battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) made up 43% of the market. BEVs alone made up 25% of sales in this period.

With 41,000 EV registrations, Thailand’s plug-in market recorded growth of 5% in the first half of 2024. This followed a surge in deliveries during the same point last year, when 89,000 units hit the roads, up 327% year on year. However, the market could soon see electrification accelerate again.
