PM2.5 crisis first major test for Srettha’s government

The air pollution crisis in Thailand, specifically the hazardous PM2.5 particles, presents a formidable challenge to new Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his cabinet. This issue transcends mere environmental concerns, morphing into a litmus test for the government’s commitment to public health and its willingness to confront entrenched industrial and agricultural interests.

PM2.5 particles are fine particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. These particles are so small that they can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, posing serious health risks. 33 provinces still blanketed by thick smog

Dangerous levels of ultrafine dust covered 33 of the 77 provinces this morning, an improvement on 47 provinces on Tuesday morning, and the peak pollution level was also down.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) reported at 9am today that red levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) covered five provinces in the Central Plain, compared with 15 provinces on Tuesday morning. Continued …

Tackling scams: Phone numbers exceeding 100 calls per day to be suspended

In a bid to combat call scams, the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry has announced that any telephone number with more than 100 calls per day will be suspended.

DES Minister Prasert Chantararuangthong said on Tuesday that in the past month alone, some 80,000 people had filed complaints about scams with the Anti-Online Scam Operation Center (AOC 1441). Continued …

Baht weakens to 35.71/dollar as US announces better job figures

The baht slipped to 35.71 per U.S. dollar at the start of trading on Tuesday following improved labor figures in the U.S. The Thai currency had closed at 35.32 per dollar on Friday.

A Thai woman took to social media to share her experience with another one of Thailand’s notorious taxi drivers, who abandoned her in the middle of the journey to Pattaya after she refused to pay more when he tried to hike the fare mid-journey.

The victim shared a video of herself arguing with the taxi driver on her TikTok account, on Monday. She began the caption by saying, “Abandoned by this taxi driver in the middle of the journey.” Continued …

Gulf Energy CEO remains Thailand’s richest man for 5th consecutive year

Sarath Ratanavadi, CEO of Gulf Energy, Thailand’s third largest energy producer, is Thailand’s richest man for the fifth year in a row, with a net worth of 190.8-billion baht, mostly in shareholdings in Stock Exchange of Thailand listed companies, according to the Money and Banking magazine’s December edition.

(Editor: The king of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn, is the richest monarch across the globe. He has an estimated personal worth of around 40 billion U.S. Dollars (1,200-billion baht.)

Ratanavadi’s net worth, by September 2023, had reduced by 12.86% percent since last year. He owns 35.7% of the shares of the Gulf Energy public company, worth about 190 billion baht, and a 0.67% shareholding in I-Tel Corp. 750 million baht for workers affected by Israel-Hamas conflict

Cabinet delays decision on minimum daily wage increase

Though Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn presented the new minimum daily wage rates to the Cabinet on Tuesday, he admitted that they need to be reconsidered and revised.

The rates were set by a tripartite committee comprising representatives of employers, employees and the government sector. The committee resolved on Friday to increase the daily minimum wage nationwide within the range of 330 to 370 baht based on provinces from Jan. 1 onward. It’s 5:50am and I’m in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand, following a single-file column of russet-robed monks as they tread barefoot down the red-dirt road that runs between their monastery and the nearby village. On the first day of 2024, a recently tweaked regulation on foreign income remitted to Thailand by Thai citizens and foreign residents will come into effect – much to the consternation of expatriate retirees and investors in foreign assets.

The new “instruction” – announced by the Revenue Department on Sept. 15 – is a revised interpretation of a longstanding tax regulation that now states that any income from a foreign source derived by a Thai individual tax resident is subject to personal income tax when brought into Thailand. A female party entertainer from Thailand claimed she was sleepy, not drunk, after crashing her car into a motorcycle rider and killing him on Phetchakasem Road in Cha Am district in the southern province of Phetchaburi.

Officers from Cha Am Police Station were notified of the car accident at an ice factory on Phetchakasem Road at 7am yesterday, and rushed to the scene with a rescue team. Continued …

Mattikan, a recent graduate also known as King, narrowly escaped a fatal bus accident that claimed 14 lives in Huay Yang, Thap Sakae, Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Following the Father’s Day tragedy that killed 14, Thailand’s Transport Ministry claims that licenses for double-decker buses currently on the road will not be renewed.

Hazardous levels of nickel and arsenic found in the air in Bangna district are among the pollution problems Bangkok is facing amid prolonged PM2.5 contamination for the past six months.

The Ministry of Public Health has begun a program to increase the birth rate in Thailand, by encouraging Thai couples to have children, with possible financial incentives.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew has warned that if Thailand’s birth rate is not increased the Thai population in the next 60 years will be reduced to only 33 million, from circa 66 million reported in the Interior Ministry’s census at the end of last year. Continued …

German who skipped bail on sexual assault of a minor charge in Pattaya named

Top cop Gen.Surachate Hakparn on Wednesday confirmed disciplinary action and a criminal investigation against two senior police officers in Pattaya in response to the shocking Deutsche Welle TV documentary on the country’s sex industry aired days ago. He also named the 55-year-old German suspect charged with the sexual assault of a minor under 18 years of age, 55-year-old Jens Kirch, as the man at the center of the story who skipped bail after his arrest in September 2022.

The deputy national police chief, who was appointed by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to get to the bottom of the affair, pointed out that while Thailand does not have an extradition treaty with Germany, he plans, in due course, to speak with the German ambassador to Thailand to pursue the matter further. A Thai woman asked a hospital located in the Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi province, near Bangkok, to explain a 250,000 baht bill related to her four-day medical treatment. The hospital later returned 100,000 baht, acknowledging it had mistaken her for a foreigner.

The woman in question was 66-year-old Jamlong Ninlakorn, the owner of a Thai restaurant in Sweden. She recently returned to Thailand to visit her son in Nonthaburi province. While in Thailand, she contracted influenza B, leading to her hospitalization in the Pak Kret district. Continued …

Thai rice varieties will no longer enter world’s best rice competition

Thailand did not participate in the World’s Best Rice 2023 competition, held during the International World Rice Commission in Cebu, the Philippines, and will not do so in the coming years, Chukiat Opaswongse, honorary president of Thai Rice Exporters Assn. (TREA), said yesterday.

His announcement came one day after Vietnam’s rice variety, ST25, was voted the best rice variety of the 30 varieties submitted for competition. Michelin adds 32 Thai eateries to its 2024 Bib Gourmand selection

The 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand has added 32 new food establishments to its prestigious Bib Gourmand selection, bringing the total to 196. The announcement on Wednesday precedes the official Michelin Stars revelation scheduled for Dec. 13.

Inflation declines in November, lowest in 33 months

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) came in at -0.44% in November from a year earlier, the second consecutive month and lowest in nearly three years, the commerce ministry said today.

Thailand’s tourism revenue falls short of annual target

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has projected a shortfall in its annual tourism revenue target, with this year’s earnings expected to reach 2.07 trillion baht (US$ 58,773,427,200) instead of the projected 2.38 trillion baht (US$ 67,575,244,800).

TAT Gov. Thapanee Kiatphaibool attributed this shortfall to the sluggish performance of international tourism receipts, which were significantly lower than the state’s target of 1.6 trillion baht (US$ 45,428,736,000). Continued …

Bus accident in PKK’s Thap Sakae leaves 14 dead, 35 injured

At least 14 people were killed and 35 others injured when a tour bus left the road and crashed into a tree in Thap Sakae, Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

8-billion-baht scheme to tackle PM2.5 pollution approved

To mitigate the escalating PM2.5 pollution problem, the government recently approved a scheme worth 8 billion baht designed to incentivize sugarcane farmers to modify their harvesting methods.

Thailand’s weekly Covid-19 cases surge over 500, with three fatalities

The Department of Disease Control in Thailand (DDC) reported a sudden surge in weekly Covid-19 cases, with over 500 new patients and three fatalities. The DDC revealed 88 cases of pneumonia among Covid patients. The report, which covers the period from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, confirms an average of 76 hospital admissions and one death per day.

Since the start of the year, the total number of Covid cases has reached 36,204, with 826 cumulative deaths. Among these, 88 patients have been diagnosed with pneumonia and 40 required respiratory support. Continued …

Makro given 30 days to explain alleged buying of smuggled pork

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has set a deadline of 30 days for the hypermart chain Makro to explain reports alleging that it has been buying fresh pork from a company whose owners have been arrested on smuggling charges.

Shopping refund gets nod

The cabinet on Monday approved a tax refund scheme for shopping to stimulate domestic spending early next year and promote wider use of electronic invoices, according to the Finance Ministry.

Pornchai Thiraveja, the ministry’s spokesman and chief of the Fiscal Policy Office, said under the “Easy E-Receipt” program, individuals can receive a tax deduction of up to 50,000 baht for purchases of goods and services from business operators backed by the e-tax system between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15 next year. Groups urge government to scrap 4am opening

Temperance groups and road safety advocates are urging the government to rethink its plan to allow bars, clubs and other entertainment venues to operate until 4am, saying authorities have not taken the necessary precautions to prevent alcohol-related accidents.

Electricity and fuel prices are expected to increase next year

Consumers are advised to brace for increases in the prices of electricity and fuel next year, even though the government will try its best to minimize the rises.

After the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed an increase in the price of electricity, from 3.99 baht to 4.68 baht/unit for January-April, the Ministry of Energy is to hold consultations with the ERC on how to trim the fuel tariff (FT), averaging 89.55 satang/unit, to limit the proposed increase, which is considered by the government to be too large. PM rejects electricity tariff hike proposal

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin rejected the electricity tariff hike approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Saturday, explaining that he was worried the increase would be too burdensome for consumers. Most of the general public are currently facing rising cost of living. Srettha added that the increase could hurt the government’s popularity in the next general election.

Informal debtors owing Bt1.5 billion flood govt mediation service

Over 37,000 people owing a combined 1.5 billion baht applied for the government’s informal-debt resolution program in its first two days, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Price of electricity from January-April to rise

The Energy Regulatory Commission of Thailand has set new electricity charges, ranging from 4.68 baht to 5.95 baht/unit from January until April, 2024. The price from September until December this year has been 3.99 baht/unit.

The commission approved an 89.55 satang/unit fuel tariff (FT) for the January-April period, which will raise the price of electricity to an average of 69.07 satang/unit. When adding in the power base rate of 3.78 baht/unit, the new price of electricity will average 4.68 baht/unit, excluding VAT. Continued …

A fire ripped through a building of a university in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua Hin district yesterday afternoon, destroying computers and other property.

Education Ministry assigned to take urgent steps to improve Thais’ English proficiency

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered the Education Ministry to come up with measures rapidly to improve English proficiency among Thai people, students in particular, after Thailand’s very poor ranking on the global Education First (EF) English Proficiency Index 2023.

EF ranks 113 countries, where English is not the first language, based on scores in 2.2 million Education First standardized English tests taken in 2022. At the top of the list is the Netherlands, with an average score of 647 out of 800, followed by Singapore (631), while Denmark, scoring 615, and Norway, with 614, swapped places at fourth and fifth place. PM2.5 air pollution rose above the safe level in many areas of Bangkok on Wednesday as the fine-dust haze collected in stagnant air.

Prachuap Khiri Khan records lowest English proficiency in Thailand

In the latest EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) reported yesterday, Thailand’s grasp of the English language has been categorized as “very low proficiency,” ranking 101st out of 113 non-native English-speaking countries.

Prachuap Khiri Khan recorded the lowest score of the Thai provinces included in the survey. With a score of just 299, Prachuap Khiri Khan’s proficiency level is markedly lower than other provinces, such as Chiang Mai, which top-scored with 464, followed by Bangkok (457), Phuket (456), and Songkhla (437). – HHT

Thai investigators crack down on Makro for shady swine supplies

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) raided Makro, a popular cash-and-carry store warehouse in Thailand after discovering the store ordered illegal pork products from a company previously indicted for illicit imports.

DSI Director Suriya Singhakamon said officers conducted a raid on Wealthy & Healthy Foods, which illegally imported pork into Thailand, and discovered that the company supplied some frozen pork and pork livers to a cash-and-carry store called Siam Makro. Continued …

Lantern blamed for burning Chiang Mai market

A fire broke out at nine buildings within Rim Ping Flower Market in the northern province of Chiang Mai at 3am yesterday. A witness claimed the blaze was triggered when a lantern from the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng Lantern Festival fell onto the buildings.

According to initial investigations, approximately 1,400 square meters were affected, including nine buildings in the market and some parts of nearby buildings. These include residential buildings, a Chinese shrine and the Thailand Post Museum. Continued …

Thailand on target to meet 25 million visitors in 2023

Analysts have expressed doubts over the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) ambitious target of attracting 8.2 million Chinese visitors next year. This comes as predictions for overall foreign arrivals next year have been down-scaled, amid concerns over a sluggish global economy.

Kasem Prunratanamala, who leads research at CGS-CIMB Securities in Thailand, stated that while the firm has kept its estimation of 27 million arrivals for this year, the prediction for next year has been reduced from 36 million to 32 million. If you look closely, you can just about see the characters and scenes that once stretched across the walls of Wat Prasat, a temple in Nonthaburi. There’s the dark shape of an elephant’s head, a figure slouching on its back; outlines of swords pointing upwards to the center of the display; patches of curved roofs.
