Underwear-clad party entertainer crashes and kills motorcycle rider in Cha Am

A female party entertainer from Thailand claimed she was sleepy, not drunk, after crashing her car into a motorcycle rider and killing him on Phetchakasem Road in Cha Am district in the southern province of Phetchaburi.

Officers from Cha Am Police Station were notified of the car accident at an ice factory on Phetchakasem Road at 7am yesterday, and rushed to the scene with a rescue team. Continued …

Investigation ongoing in Prachuap Khiri Khan bus tragedy

Deputy Minister of Transport Surapong Piyachot visited the scene of a catastrophic bus accident that happened in Prachuap Khiri Khan on Tuesday.

The incident, involving a Bangkok-Nathawi passenger bus colliding with a tree, occurred in Thap Sakae District, near Wanakorn National Park, and resulted in 14 deaths and 35 injuries. Continued … 

Survivor of fatal bus accident recounts harrowing experience

Mattikan, a recent graduate also known as King, narrowly escaped a fatal bus accident that claimed 14 lives in Huay Yang, Thap Sakae, Prachuap Khiri Khan.

She was traveling home from Bangkok to Thung Song, Nakhon Si Thammarat, intending to give her graduation gown to her father as a national Father’s Day gift. At the time of the accident, she was seated on the lower level, behind the driver, in a state of sleep. Continued …

Fatal accident leads to double-decker bus ban

Following the Father’s Day tragedy that killed 14, Thailand’s Transport Ministry claims that licenses for double-decker buses currently on the road will not be renewed.

A deputy government spokeswoman claimed that double-decker buses will be outlawed in the next four to five years, a necessary move after an accident in Prachuap Khiri Khan province killed 14 passengers. Continued …

Comprehensive Measures Urged to Tackle Forest Fires and Air Pollution

Yesterday, Traisulee Traisanakul, the secretary to the Thai Minister of the Interior, publicly revealed policies for preventing and solving problems of forest fires, smog, and PM 2.5 smoke proposed by Anutin Charnvirakul, the Thai deputy prime minister and minister of the Interior, to provincial governors.

Persistent PM2.5 increasing lung cancer risk, experts warn

Hazardous levels of nickel and arsenic found in the air in Bangna district are among the pollution problems Bangkok is facing amid prolonged PM2.5 contamination for the past six months.

It has also been found that during periods when there is high presence of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) in the air, there is a 30% increase in feelings of depression among the population. Continued …

Government urges Thai couples to have children

The Ministry of Public Health has begun a program to increase the birth rate in Thailand, by encouraging Thai couples to have children, with possible financial incentives.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew has warned that if Thailand’s birth rate is not increased the Thai population in the next 60 years will be reduced to only 33 million, from circa 66 million reported in the Interior Ministry’s census at the end of last year. Continued …

German who skipped bail on sexual assault of a minor charge in Pattaya named

Top cop Gen.Surachate Hakparn on Wednesday confirmed disciplinary action and a criminal investigation against two senior police officers in Pattaya in response to the shocking Deutsche Welle TV documentary on the country’s sex industry aired days ago. He also named the 55-year-old German suspect charged with the sexual assault of a minor under 18 years of age, 55-year-old Jens Kirch, as the man at the center of the story who skipped bail after his arrest in September 2022.

The deputy national police chief, who was appointed by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to get to the bottom of the affair, pointed out that while Thailand does not have an extradition treaty with Germany, he plans, in due course, to speak with the German ambassador to Thailand to pursue the matter further. Lopburi monkeys force the local population to cage themselves in

A once prosperous Thai municipality not far from Thailand’s capital Bangkok is living through a crisis, as the city, the provincial capital of Lopburi province by the same name, finds itself overtaken by a growing population of monkeys.

Locals are increasingly living in fear and within steel cage-like fabrications to protect their quality of life and business concerns, as once thriving areas of the city are morphing into ghost towns as the monkeys become more aggressive and domineering while being supported with financial donations and political protection from people outside Lopburi. Thai woman mistaken for foreigner and charged 100,000 baht more by hospital

A Thai woman asked a hospital located in the Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi province, near Bangkok, to explain a 250,000 baht bill related to her four-day medical treatment. The hospital later returned 100,000 baht, acknowledging it had mistaken her for a foreigner.

The woman in question was 66-year-old Jamlong Ninlakorn, the owner of a Thai restaurant in Sweden. She recently returned to Thailand to visit her son in Nonthaburi province. While in Thailand, she contracted influenza B, leading to her hospitalization in the Pak Kret district. Continued …

Thai rice varieties will no longer enter world’s best rice competition

Thailand did not participate in the World’s Best Rice 2023 competition, held during the International World Rice Commission in Cebu, the Philippines, and will not do so in the coming years, Chukiat Opaswongse, honorary president of Thai Rice Exporters Assn. (TREA), said yesterday.

His announcement came one day after Vietnam’s rice variety, ST25, was voted the best rice variety of the 30 varieties submitted for competition. Only three varieties from Vietnam, India and Cambodia reached the final round. The best variety was unanimously selected by a group of chefs in a blind tasting. Continued …

Michelin adds 32 Thai eateries to its 2024 Bib Gourmand selection

The 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand has added 32 new food establishments to its prestigious Bib Gourmand selection, bringing the total to 196. The announcement on Wednesday precedes the official Michelin Stars revelation scheduled for Dec. 13.

Of the new eateries, 12 are based in Koh Samui and Surat Thani mainland – two new destinations covered in the 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand. Continued …

Inflation declines in November, lowest in 33 months

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) came in at -0.44% in November from a year earlier, the second consecutive month and lowest in nearly three years, the commerce ministry said today.

ACE sinks Bt20 billion into renewable projects

SET-listed Absolute Clean Energy (ACE), a local biomass power developer and operator, is planning to allocate 20 billion baht to finance 55 renewable power plant projects it won in auctions as part of Thailand’s clean energy policy.

Thailand’s tourism revenue falls short of annual target

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has projected a shortfall in its annual tourism revenue target, with this year’s earnings expected to reach 2.07 trillion baht (US$ 58,773,427,200) instead of the projected 2.38 trillion baht (US$ 67,575,244,800).

TAT Gov. Thapanee Kiatphaibool attributed this shortfall to the sluggish performance of international tourism receipts, which were significantly lower than the state’s target of 1.6 trillion baht (US$ 45,428,736,000). Continued …

Songkran festival recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Songkran Festival of Thailand has been included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. The official announcement was made during UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee meeting for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Botswana.
