Thai Party Plans to Axe 1,000 and 500 Baht Notes

The Thai Pakdee Party has announced a plan to cancel the 1,000 and 500 baht banknotes throughout Thailand. This move aims to combat corruption and disrupt illicit cash flows. Warong Dechgitvigrom, the party leader, asserted these notes enable gray money operations to disguise illegal wealth.

Eateries slam new alcohol law

The Restaurant Assn. opposes the new alcohol law requiring restaurant operators to share some responsibility for any issues caused by drunk patrons. The revised Alcoholic Beverage Control Act of 2025 prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages to people under 20, as well as those who are already drunk.

Under the new legislation, alcoholic beverage sellers must verify a buyer’s age when there is reasonable doubt, using a national ID card or other officially issued identification. Continued …

Phuket, Krabi, and Phangnga marked the 21st anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami yesterday with solemn remembrance ceremonies, interfaith prayers, and tributes to the thousands who died.

In Phuket, a memorial service at Mai Khao Cemetery was begun by Boonchu Chanwong, chief judge of the Phuket Administrative Court, with local officials, residents and visitors gathering to honor victims and reflect on the disaster that devastated six Andaman provinces. Continued …

The catastrophic tsunami that killed at least 228,000 people in 15 countries across Indonesia, Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka, was triggered by an undersea 9.2–9.3 earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Dec. 2, 2004.

Bangkok issues PM2.5 health warning

Bangkok has issued a public health warning from tomorrow to Jan. 3, as weather conditions are expected to increase the risk of PM2.5 pollution across the capital. Weak winds and low atmospheric ventilation, most pronounced from nighttime through early morning, are forecast to trap airborne particles and allow pollution levels to build.

City officials have urged residents, farmers, and business operators to avoid all forms of open burning, including agricultural-residue burning, waste incineration, and other outdoor burning, as such activities would significantly worsen air quality during the high-risk period. Continued … 

Flat-Headed Cat Deemed ‘Possibly Extinct’ Has Returned After 29 Years

Conservationists in Thailand are celebrating a surprising discovery. On Christmas day, Panthera, a global wild cat conservation organization, announced that the endangered flat-headed cat has returned to southern Thailand for the first time in 29 years. Thailand agrees to ceasefire, rejects pre-clash position return

Thailand says it is prepared to enter a short ceasefire with Cambodia but will not accept any deal that requires Thai forces to retreat from areas they have secured during the latest border clashes.

Thailand’s Air Travel Booms Ahead of New Year with Increased Seats and Reduced Fares

Air travel across Thailand has surged ahead of the 2026 New Year holiday, with passenger numbers climbing steadily throughout December, prompting the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) and the Ministry of Transport to expand seat capacity and lower fares to support public travel.

As of Dec. 21, about 479,979 passengers had passed through Thai airports, including roughly 208,040 domestic travelers and 271,939 international passengers, bringing traffic close to pre-pandemic levels. Passenger volumes are expected to peak between Dec. 27 and Jan. 4. On international routes, travel between Thailand and China reached about 19,852 passengers, around 75% of pre-COVID levels, while arrivals from India totaled 10,616, exceeding pre-pandemic figures by about 10%. Thailand’s top 10 cleanest coasts and rivers

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) has reported that coastal seawater quality nationwide in 2025 was rated “good” at 31%, “fair” at 60%, “degraded” at 6%, and “severely degraded” at 3%, based on monitoring at 210 sampling points.

German man murdered in Prachuap Khiri Khan, wife confesses

Police uncovered a murder plot involving a Thai woman and her male employee who killed a German man and left his body inside a house in Prachuap Khiri Khan province for almost a month before pretending innocence and notifying police about the death.

The case came to light on Dec. 1 when the 45-year-old Thai woman, Nitthaya, contacted officers from Khlong Wan Police Station to report a foul smell coming from a house in the Huay Sai subdistrict. Extended hours for beach vendors rejected

A request to extend operating hours for Hua Hin beach vendors has been rejected, with local authorities instructing vendors to continue operating under existing regulations. The decision was made at a meeting of the Hua Hin Beach Management Committee on Tuesday.

Two Thai soldiers were injured after stepping on landmines, one losing his leg, near the Thai-captured Ta Kwai temple in the northeastern province of Surin yesterday afternoon.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said he spoke by phone with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border, calling for an immediate ceasefire and implementation of what he described as a peace agreement reached in Kuala Lumpur.

Trip.com suspends tourism partnership with Cambodia amid border clashes, cyber concerns

Trip.com Group, the biggest online travel agency in China, said yesterday that its partnership with Cambodia’s tourism authority was suspended, in a move to address the Chinese public’s heightened sensitivity over safety in the Southeast Asian country.

Electronics lead export growth of 7% in November

The Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO reported that exports in November were worth US$27.445 billion, expanding for a 17th consecutive month at 7.1%. Excluding oil-related products, gold and military supplies, exports rose 11.8%. Imports totaled US$30.172 billion, up 17.6%, resulting in a trade deficit of US$2.726 billion.

Nantapong Chiralerspong, director of the TPSO, said exports were mainly supported by electronics shipments, driven by the upcycle in computers and growth in modern technologies, including AI, keeping industrial exports at a high growth rate. Continued … 

Foreign investment hits 331-billion baht in 11 months

Foreign investment in Thailand rose in both volume and value in the first 11 months of 2025, with total approved investment reaching 331.162 billion baht, up 45% year on year, according to the Department of Business Development (DBD).

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director-general of the DBD under the Commerce Ministry, said approvals for foreign nationals to operate businesses in Thailand under the Foreign Business Act, B.E. 2542 (1999) — limited to businesses required to obtain permission — in November 2025 totaled 104 cases. Economic slowdown drags new business registrations down 22% in November

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director-general of the Department of Business Development (DBD) under the Ministry of Commerce, said Thailand recorded 5,554 new business registrations in November. That was down 22% month-on-month from 7,165 in October 2025, a fall of 1,611. Compared with November 2024 (6,266), registrations were down 11%, or 712.

Total registered capital stood at 14.86-billion baht in November. This was down 32% month-on-month from 21.78-billion baht in October, a decline of 6.92-billion baht, and down 39% year-on-year from 24.22-billion baht in November 2024, a fall of 9.36-billion baht. Continued …

Consumer Caution Limits New Year Travel and Spending in Thailand

More than 80% of Thais remain undecided or have no plans to travel during the New Year holiday period, reflecting continued caution amid economic uncertainty, according to a survey released by a Thai business research center.

Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the Universiy of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and chairman of its Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, said the survey showed subdued sentiment ahead of the New Year 2026 period. Continued …

TAT Warns of Revenue Drop Amid Border Conflict and Flooding

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expects a significant decline in New Year holiday revenue, forecasting a 2%-9% decline compared to last year. Border tensions and severe flooding affecting southern provinces have contributed to this decrease in tourist numbers. However, a robust local currency continues to buoy outbound travel.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, the governor of TAT, has stated that they anticipate tourism receipts to reach 70-76.5 billion baht for the New Year, a decrease from the previous year. He also expects a decline in foreign visitor numbers, with an estimated 1.4-1.5 million arrivals between Dec. 20 and Jan. 1. 66 Flights Added as Year-End Travel Nears Pre-Covid Levels

In anticipation of a surge in air travel this year-end, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has requested airlines to arrange 66 additional flights from Dec. 27 to Jan. 4. This initiative will provide an extra 11,312 seats. Additionally, airlines will offer 30% discounts on 202 flights across 11 routes.

CAAT Director-General Manat Chavanaprayoon announced the additional flights and discounted fares to manage the expected increase in passenger numbers during the festive season. The extra flights will cover six major routes, including Bangkok to Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Animal Trafficking Allegations Denied by Dutch WFFT Founder

The Dutch founder of the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), Edwin Wiek, has denied accusations of animal trafficking after receiving a tiger from the Karen National Liberation Army (KNU) in Kanchanaburi on Wednesday.

Climate scientists expect the punishing storms, floods, and devastation experienced in Southeast Asia to become the new normal, driven by climate patterns set last year. The unusually severe floods this year, caused by late-arriving storms and relentless rain, have wreaked havoc, catching many places off guard.

Some 1,750 people have died across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, with more than 1,000 still missing in floods and landslides. Hua Hin Ladies’ food donation drive – 1,300 kg of rice

The Hua Hin Ladies’ annual Rice Would Be Nice donation drive has delivered another strong outcome this year, supporting Jungle Aid and several villages in need across the region. The 2025 campaign, which brings together members of Hua Hin’s community along with local businesses and major hotels, collected more than 1,300 kilograms of rice and a wide range of essential household goods.

According to organizers, the collection will help supply food and basic necessities to partner villages, including a school that uses around 300 kilograms of rice each month to provide lunches for 200 children. Bangkok Chokes: Dangerous Smog Levels Grip City Again

Bangkok and 10 nearby provinces are once again engulfed in hazardous air pollution levels, with PM2.5 particulates recorded at dangerous concentrations yesterday. The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported figures ranging from 78.6 to 91.9 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air, far surpassing the safe threshold of 37.5µg/m³ set by the government. The highest measurement was in Samut Sakhon province.

Orange levels, which start affecting health, were recorded in 30 provinces, with figures between 38.9 to 72µg/m³. Provinces facing these conditions include Ayutthaya, Phetchaburi, Prachin Buri, and Chanthaburi, among others. Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced that the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) approved an increase in the passenger service charge (PSC) for international departures at six airports under Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT). New alcohol sale hours take effect nationwide

Effective today, Thailand has officially relaxed its alcohol sales restrictions and extended the time customers may continue drinking in venues by one additional hour. The changes follow two new announcements published in the Royal Gazette, now legally in force.

The update provides a 180-day temporary allowance for sales between 2 pm and 5 pm, following which the policy will undergo a review. Provincial and Bangkok alcohol control committees will evaluate the effects of the temporary 2 pm–5 pm window and report to the national committee before the 180-day period ends. Continued …

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) spokesperson Clare Nullis told reporters in Geneva that Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam are among the countries most affected by what she described as “a combination of monsoon-related rainfall and tropical cyclone activity”.
