More rain and isolated heavy to very heavy showers are expected in the north, northeast, south’s west coast, central, and east regions today, as the southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf intensifies, with the monsoon trough lying across upper Thailand.

Thailand’s economic recovery, particularly in the tourism sector, faces a new headwind as the Thai baht edges toward unsustainable strength. As of the morning of May 22, the baht opened at 32.69 per U.S. dollar — slightly stronger than the previous day’s close of 32.73.

Despite a rise in U.S. 10-year bond yields — typically a factor that would support the dollar — the greenback remains under pressure due to investor concerns over America’s fiscal stability and reciprocal tariffs. Former TAT governor offers solutions to Thailand’s tourism crisis as Chinese arrivals plummet

Thailand’s tourism industry is in serious decline, as the number of Chinese tourists — a key driver of the market — has dropped dramatically. In 2019, before the pandemic, Thailand welcomed 11 million Chinese tourists, representing 27% of the total 39.8 million international visitors. That equated to around 900,000 Chinese arrivals per month, or roughly 30,000 per day.

Fast forward to 2025, and the situation has changed drastically. In January, there were about 22,000 Chinese tourists per day. By the end of April, that figure had fallen to around 10,000. The average daily arrival from China during the first four months of 2025 was only about 13,000. By early May, the daily number had dipped below 10,000, with just 7,288 Chinese tourists recorded on May 5 and 8,379 on May 13. Continued …

Convention Bureau to focus on domestic sector

More Thai companies are opting for domestic meetings instead of traveling abroad due to economic uncertainty this year, helping to propel domestic MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) revenue to 86 billion baht from 26 million travelers this year, according to the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

Visa card spending per visitor rises in Thailand

Visa Thailand has observed slower growth in Visa card payments made by inbound tourists, in line with stagnant foreign tourist arrivals. However, spending per visitor has increased, supported by “higher quality travelers”, said the card company.

Swiss man on the run from jail sentence for assaulting Thai doctor

New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

Baht poised to weaken further

The baht is expected to depreciate to around 33.80 against the U.S. dollar this week, driven by a firmer greenback following the temporary pause in the U.S.-China tariff war. However, the Thai currency is expected to remain volatile.

Roong Sanguanruang, senior vice president for global markets planning at Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri), said the bank expects the baht to depreciate to a range of 33.00-33.80 per dollar this week due to heightened uncertainties. Continued …

The rainy season will officially begin tomorrow, the Meteorological Department announced. Director-general Sukanyanee Yawinchan said yesterday the wet season’s official start was dependent on the following three conditions:

The government plans to expand the venues at which alcoholic beverages can be sold on a daily basis after a new law was enacted last week, allowing five categories of venues to sell liquor.

Police in Bangkok are poised to issue arrest warrants for 17 individuals connected to the catastrophic collapse of the State Audit Office (SAO) building. The March 28 disaster occurred following an earthquake centered in Myanmar and claimed numerous lives. Those being targeted include engineers, project supervisors, and executives from the construction contractor.

Investigators are targeting individuals from the Italian-Thai Development and China Railway No.10 Engineering Group Co. joint venture, as well as construction supervisors and engineers. Warning over new VAT proposal

The proposal to lower the value-added tax (VAT) registration threshold to include businesses with annual revenue of less than 1.8 million baht could increase the burden on small retailers already grappling with weak consumer spending and intense competition, according to the Thai Wholesale and Retail Trade Assn.

6 police officers honored after Hua Hin aircraft crash

Following a tragic small aircraft accident involving a police air unit, six police officers’ bodies have been transported from Hua Hin Hospital to the Police General Hospital’s forensic institute.

Deaths from sandfly bites prompt alert in Thailand

Thai health authorities have issued a warning following two deaths from leishmaniasis this year, urging the public to take precautions against bites from sandflies, the disease’s primary vector.

Leishmaniasis is relatively rare in Thailand, with only 40 cases recorded since 1996. Since the beginning of this year, two fatalities have been reported — one in Songkhla and another in Bangkok, said Dr. Jurai Wongsawat, spokesperson for the Department of Disease Control. Continued …

Thai Woman Survives King Cobra Attack, Brings Snake to Hospital

A 47-year-old woman from Sa Kaeo Province has been discharged from the hospital after surviving a King Cobra attack, during which she fought the snake and brought its carcass to doctors to aid in her treatment.

She was gathering mushrooms near the Khlong Khan Tho reservoir in Watthana Nakhon district with several relatives when a 3-meter King Cobra lunged at her, biting her left leg and causing a severe wound. IMF advises ASEAN to boost regional trade amid Trump tariff threats

Speaking at a press conference in Washington, DC, on Thursday, Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said that Asian economies are encountering considerable difficulties as they remain highly dependent on exports.

PM to chair Pheu Thai party meeting in Hua Hin tomorrow

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will take a day away from matters of government tomorrow so she can chair a general meeting of the Pheu Thai Party in Hua Hin. Also attending will be former prime ministers Thaksin Shinawatra, her father, and Srettha Thavisin.

Paetongtarn will travel to Hua Hin by train, departing from Bangkok in the morning, stopping at Bang Bamru railway station to pick up her family, who will include her sister, Pinthongtha Shinawatra Kunakornwong’s family and her elder brother, Panthongtae Shinawatra. Data paints economy as ‘black hole’

I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. It is obvious that GDP data and the actual economic situation do not go hand in hand.

Cabinet approves debt-relief measures

The cabinet on Wednesday approved debt support measures, including interest suspensions and reduced principal payments, to help tackle household and small-business debt, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said. The measures will help retail borrowers and smaller businesses, she told a press conference.

Thailand’s shrimp industry battered by disease, low prices

Thai shrimp production is expected to decrease by 4% year-on-year because of disease outbreaks and falling prices, says the Thai Shrimp Assn. Ekapoj Yodpinit, president of the association, said total shrimp production in 2024 is predicted to fall to 270,000 tons, from 280,000 tons last year.

The decline is attributed to disease outbreaks and unstable weather, which affect the quality of baby shrimp and farming conditions. Falling prices have also prompted some farmers to postpone their new farming cycles. Continued …

Nearly 17.5 million motorists will be traveling during New Year break

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. We spent the night in a floating bungalow, soaking up the tranquility and jumping into kayaks whenever we wanted to explore. Continued …

Microsoft unveils closed-loop liquid cooling design for data centers

Tech-giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it will start its “zero-water evaporated” liquid cooling systems operations for data centers in 2026. The design is said to optimize AI workloads and consume zero water with the use of a closed-loop design.

Data centers rely heavily on water to remove heat from data halls containing servers and other IT equipment. A substantial amount of water evaporates as part of the cooling process and must be constantly replaced. Young people in Thailand call for a bigger role in climate action

Youth advocates yesterday submitted climate action recommendations to the Royal Thai government. The recommendations drew on a national Suan Dusit Poll of nearly 1,000 children and young people across Thailand, followed by one-to-one discussions between UNICEF and young representatives.

The poll found that 93% of young people reported feeling the impact of climate change in their daily lives, affecting their mental and physical health, and that 85% were eager to take action. British man commits suicide in Cha Am, leaving sand messages for Thai wife

A British man left messages in the sand for his wife and children before taking his own life on Cha Am Beach in the southern province of Phetchaburi. He was reportedly distressed over two legal cases and a 400,000-baht loss to a friend.

A Thai tourist discovered the lifeless body of the British man, later identified as 42-year-old Antony Gerrard Kelly, at an abandoned beachfront pavilion on Cha Am Beach yesterday. Kelly was found hanging in the pavilion. Continued …

120 arrested in underwear at Bangkok hotel party

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

British man’s Thai-high trip goes up in smoke at Manchester customs

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. Demand for nursing homes and residences for the elderly has surged as Thailand has entered an aged society, according to results of a survey by the Real Estate Information Center (REIC) released on Sunday.

In Thailand, the number of people aged above 60 years accounts for 20% of the population. The aged population is expected to increase by 4.89% annually. Chinese visitors to Thailand between January-November top 6 million

Foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1 this year reached 32,020,169 visitors, generating approximately 1.5 trillion baht in revenue, the Tourism and Sports ministry reported last week.

China ranked as the top source of tourists with 6,214,226 visitors, followed by Malaysia (4,506,898), India (1,915,152), South Korea (1,685,600), and Russia (1,503,312). Electricity price will be cut to 4.15 baht per unit for January-April

Thai factory output down 0.91% y/y in October, seen rising in 2025

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped 0.91% in October from a year earlier, the industry ministry said on Wednesday, falling less than analysts’ expectations. The figure compared with a forecast fall of 1.85% for October in a Reuters poll, and followed an annual drop of 3.51% in September.

LNG prices to keep power bills stable

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices are likely to stay unchanged in early 2025, putting less pressure on the authorities preparing to calculate a new power tariff for electricity bills between January and April next year, says the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

Inflation up in Octpber, below forecast

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.83% in October from a year earlier, the Commerce Ministry said today, remaining below the Bank of Thailand’s target range for inflation of 1% to 3%.

Thailand welcomes 29 million tourists, expects more as high season kicks in

Thailand has welcomed more than 29.08 million foreign tourists, generating approximately 1.358 trillion baht in revenue from Jan. 1 to Nov. 3 this year.

According to statistics from the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Chinese tourists topped the list of arrivals with over 5.75 million, followed by tourists from Malaysia (4.18 million), India (1.72 million), South Korea (1.53 million), and Russia (1.3 million) during the period. Continued …

Domestic tourists up 9% YOY, but likely to miss Bt1-trillion revenue goal

The number of domestic travelers in the first nine months of this year crossed 148.02 million person-trips, increasing 8.98% year on year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported on Tuesday. These travelers have generated income to local tourism businesses at around 702.52 billion baht, increasing 12.6% compared with the same period of the previous year, it said.

Festive events and new stimulus campaigns are set to boost domestic tourism revenue in Thailand to between 950 billion and 970 billion baht (US$28.6 and US$29 billion) this year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Two Thai Women Arrested for Scamming Tourists with Fake Resort Bookings in Pattaya

Two Thai women were arrested for creating fake Facebook pages to scam tourists out of deposits for luxury resort bookings in Pattaya. The suspects were arrested by Tourist Police at their residences in Chonburi and Samut Prakan provinces. Both face charges of “fraud by entering false information into a computer system”.

According to police, the suspects created fake Facebook pages for a high-end resort on Koh Larn, Pattaya, to scam tourists into paying deposits for room bookings. Once the victims transferred the money, the suspects blocked them on Facebook and looked for new targets. Continued …

Heavy rainfall drowns domestic travel plans for Hua Hin, Thailand

Heavy downpours in Hua Hin and Cha Am are expected to affect tourism during the three-day holiday this weekend, worsening domestic sentiment, as the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) highlighted natural disasters as the most critical factor to watch during the high season.

Heavy downpours set to flood 43 provinces in Thailand

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued another warning for continuous heavy rainfall impacting 43 provinces, including Bangkok and southern regions, with 70% of the areas affected, posing risks of flash floods.

The southern region (east coast) will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with very heavy rainfall expected in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. Flood-related bacterial infections on the rise

Thailand’s Disease Control Department is alerting the public to a rapid rise in cases of Leptospirosis and Melioidosis during the rainy season and floods. They are bacterial infections to which children are particularly prone and which require close monitoring.

Phuket’s reservoirs are bursting at the seams, with Bang Niew Dam in Srisoonthorn now at 103% capacity. The island is bracing for more rain and potential flash floods through Saturday, as the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of continued downpours.

New Bangkok Rules Limit Street Vendors to Designated Zones
