Monsoon rains to hit 39 provinces, flash flood warnings

Heavy monsoon rains are expected to lash 39 provinces across Thailand, with severe weather warnings issued for potential flash floods and runoff. Bangkok is also bracing for significant rainfall, with 70% of the area anticipated to be affected.

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms will cover 60% of the area, mostly in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. China’s demographics alone – even if you ignore its increasing marginalization from global trade, its dependency on food and energy imports, and President Xi Jinping’s utter gutting of the bureaucracy of anyone who might bring him accurate but unwelcome news – could collapse its economy in the coming decades. Between now and 2050, by conservative estimates, its working-age population will shrink by 220 million people, around a fifth.

A high level of non-performing loans (NPLs), slow loan growth and rising household debt will continue to pressure banks until the first half of next year, as a reduction in consumer purchasing power and rising living costs will affect not only small businesses but also large companies, analysts say.

In 2023, Thailand saw one of the worst drops in FDI in the world

Foreign direct investment (FDI), a key barometer for economic growth for developing countries, has seen a decline of about 2% in 2023, with Thailand’s share of FDI inflow declining among the highest in the world, according to latest data released by United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD), with ASEAN continuing to remain in the positive trajectory witnessing a 1.2% uptick in its FDI to US$ 226.3 billion.

UNCTAD, in a report released recently, said that global FDI in 2023 decreased marginally, by 2%, to $1.3 trillion. This headline figure was affected by wild swings in financial flows through a small number of European conduit economies; excluding the effect of these conduits, global FDI flows were more than 10% lower than in 2022. Call to educate public over nuclear push

 

A new public perception of nuclear technology in the power sector is needed and crucial for the Energy Ministry’s efforts to push for small modular reactor (SMR) projects in the 2024 power development plan, say energy and nuclear technology experts.

Pickup truck loan defaults surge 39% in May

The National Credit Bureau (NCB) reported a significant 39% increase in bad debt for pickup truck loans in May, highlighting an alarming trend in the auto finance sector.

Banks have also seen a contraction in car loans during the first half of this year, corresponding with a nationwide decline in car sales. By May 2024, non-performing loans (NPLs) for pickup trucks had reached approximately 138 billion baht, marking a 39.1% year-on-year rise. Continued …

A senior Thai civil servant at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the last week has brought home the significance of the crucial visa changes ushered in on July 15. Undeniably, the changes offering a 60-day visa exemption to travelers from 103 countries extendable to 90 days and the new DTV visa are radical departures.

For instance, on the 60-day exemption, Naruechai Ninnart explained that this was a new visa from the previous 30-day one. In short, it allowed for business engagement and ad hoc working. Similarly, with the DTV or Destination Thailand visa, here is a visa for genuine freelancers or digital nomads that for Bt10,000 offers them the ability to enter and exit the country for five years, staying for up to 180 days at a time. Consumption of shark fin has declined by more than one-third in Thailand since 2017, according to a new report from wildlife advocacy group WildAid. But with more than half of urban Thai citizens reporting they still plan to eat shark in the future, demand remains high.

Thailand on track to upgrade third-class trains with air-con and seats

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) plans to improve the service and facilities of its third-class trains by spending 780 million baht on new seats and air conditioning. For the first phase, 130 third-class carriages will be equipped with air conditioning by next year.

Deputy Minister of Transport Surapong Piyachote said the SRT is now seeking operators to carry out the improvements. The first batch of renovations will occur on 130 carriages out of the existing 400 and is expected to be finished by 2025. Continued …

An 82-year-old Thai woman in Sattahip has become a social media hero after she used a rope to pull an electrician to safety from a potential electrocution and gave the man CPR to save his life.

Mobile users must verify SIM cards by tomorrow or face restrictions

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has mandated that individuals possessing between six and 100 SIM cards must verify their identities at mobile operators’ service centers by tomorrow, July 11, or face restrictions on outgoing calls and text messages.

Out of a total of 3,981,251 SIM cards, 1,635,407 had their identities verified as of yesterday, leaving over 2.3 million cardholders to complete the verification process by the deadline. An international non-profit organization has added Thailand to its watchlist of countries experiencing rapid declines in civic freedoms on alleged grounds of targeting of activists, critics and the opposition by the government of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

Thailand is now among 50 countries rated “Repressed” by Civitus Monitor. This rating is typically given to countries where civic space is heavily contested by power holders, who impose a combination of legal and practical constraints on the full enjoyment of fundamental rights. Continued …

Rage over plan to raze Thai national park for farming

The ongoing public hearings organized by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) over a plan to declare 265,286 rai of land in Thap Lan National Park as no longer being protected forest land – paving the way for these parts of the park to be used for agricultural purposes – have sparked heated debate.

While a number of the villagers – who began occupying parts of the park before the boundary of Thap Lan National Park was declared – support the separation of the 265,286 rai, many conservationists and other members of the public disagree with the plan, approved by the cabinet on March 14 of last year. People in Koh Nang Yuan, a famous tourist island in southern Thailand, have maintained the habit of limiting the use of plastic items for many years, especially single-use products. Tourists are also required to do the same to retain the island’s natural environment and protect the coral reef.

Comprised of three islets connected by white sand, the island is a great diving spot to see coral reefs. Constant Energy Signs Solar Power Deal With Midea Refrigeration Equipment

Constant Energy has signed one of its largest corporate power purchase agreements (PPA) to date, a significant 12-megawatt peak (MWp) solar rooftop project with Midea Refrigeration Equipment (Thailand), a subsidiary of Fortune 500 company Midea Group. This agreement was established in collaboration with Anhui Midea Hekang Electric Power Engineering.

Hideyasu Kiyomoto, the mayor of Himeji City in Japan, this week proposed a significant price hike for foreign tourists visiting Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Currently, the entry fee is JPY 1,000 (about $6) for all, but the mayor suggested increasing it to around $30 for foreigners, while locals would pay $5. Thailand’s Success Against Avian Flu: Lessons for the World

Twenty years ago, Thailand faced a devastating avian flu outbreak, losing over 62 million birds, primarily chickens. The virus, identified as H5N1, spread rapidly among poultry and led to significant human fatalities. The average closures at over 97 a month compare unfavorably with the average of 57 factories that shut down each month in 2021. A team of southern herpetologists and rescue workers recently discovered a king cobra’s nest in a rubber plantation in Hat Yai. They plan to incubate the eggs before releasing the hatchlings into the wild.

Officially named as “fragile” types of people, nearly 15 million nationwide will be entitled to the 10,000-baht, digital wallet handout project before fiscal 2024 ends, government spokesperson Chai Wacharong confirmed yesterday.

Smoke from landfill fire engulfs Hua Hin

A noxious haze descended upon Hua Hin for days, emanating from a blaze at an old landfill between Soi 102 and Soi 112 in Thap Thai. The enduring landfill inferno stubbornly smouldered for five relentless days.

1.4 tons of heroin seized in Nong Khai

Four drug smugglers have been arrested and 1.4 tons of heroin smuggled across the Mekong River seized from a house and a rubber plantation in Sangkhom district of Nong Khai province.

Temperatures could rise to 43 °C today

Much of Thailand will experience extreme heat today, the Thai Meteorological Department warns, with temperatures in some areas likely to peak at 43°C. Scattered thunderstorms are possible, particularly in the southern region, with rainfall covering around 30% of the area.

The Bangkok metropolitan region will bake under partly cloudy skies with a maximum temperature of 41°C. The public are advised to take care of their health and avoid working outdoors or engaging in outdoor activities for extended periods. Continued … 

How many more lives have to be lost to restless driving?

Over the weekend, social media was buzzing with yet another accident, this time a pedestrian was hit by a motorcycle while he was trying to cross the zebra crossing – and this zebra crossing had traffic signals to stop vehicles for the pedestrian to be able to cross.

The video shows that the pedestrian waited for the zebra crossing’s light to turn green (meaning the pedestrian could cross, while the vehicles had to stop), before he opted to cross. He managed to cross the street on one side but as soon as he stepped on to the second road to cross, an oncoming motorcycle did not stop on the red light and slammed the pedestrian. Continued …

COVID-19 surges during Songkran festival

More than a thousand people were admitted for treatment of COVID-19 infections between April 14-20, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director of the Department of Disease Control. Of those admitted to hospitals, 292 are suffering from lung infections and 101 require ventilators to help with breathing. Three have died and all were either elderly people or had comorbidities.

Thongchai said that the surge in COVID cases during the Songkran festival was not unexpected and most of the cases were found in and around Bangkok and in tourist provinces. Continued …
