Thailand on track to upgrade third-class trains with air-con and seats

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) plans to improve the service and facilities of its third-class trains by spending 780 million baht on new seats and air conditioning. For the first phase, 130 third-class carriages will be equipped with air conditioning by next year.

Deputy Minister of Transport Surapong Piyachote said the SRT is now seeking operators to carry out the improvements. The first batch of renovations will occur on 130 carriages out of the existing 400 and is expected to be finished by 2025. Continued …

82-Year-Old Woman Gives CPR to Electrician to Save Him from Electrocution

An 82-year-old Thai woman in Sattahip has become a social media hero after she used a rope to pull an electrician to safety from a potential electrocution and gave the man CPR to save his life.

The viral incident occurred on Monday at a house in the Plu Ta Luang subdistrict, Sattahip district, Chonburi province. Emergency responders received a report of an electrician suffering from an electrical shock and rushed to the scene. Continued …

Mobile users must verify SIM cards by tomorrow or face restrictions

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has mandated that individuals possessing between six and 100 SIM cards must verify their identities at mobile operators’ service centers by tomorrow, July 11, or face restrictions on outgoing calls and text messages.

Out of a total of 3,981,251 SIM cards, 1,635,407 had their identities verified as of yesterday, leaving over 2.3 million cardholders to complete the verification process by the deadline. This initiative is part of the NBTC’s efforts to curb the use of mobile phones for criminal activities. Continued …

Fish farm owner pulled into watery grave – by a fish

A tragic incident occurred Monday when a fish farm owner drowned in her pond in Chanthaburi after being pulled in by a fish. Her younger brother revealed that she could not swim.

Investigators reported the discovery of a 68-year-old Nok, lifeless in a fish pond in Chanthaburi’s Tha Mai district. Local police Nok floating near a bamboo bridge used for feeding the fish. . Continued … 

Thailand Added To Human Rights Watchlist By International NGO

An international non-profit organization has added Thailand to its watchlist of countries experiencing rapid declines in civic freedoms on alleged grounds of targeting of activists, critics and the opposition by the government of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

Thailand is now among 50 countries rated “Repressed” by Civitus Monitor. This rating is typically given to countries where civic space is heavily contested by power holders, who impose a combination of legal and practical constraints on the full enjoyment of fundamental rights. Continued …

Rage over plan to raze Thai national park for farming

The ongoing public hearings organized by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) over a plan to declare 265,286 rai of land in Thap Lan National Park as no longer being protected forest land – paving the way for these parts of the park to be used for agricultural purposes – have sparked heated debate.

While a number of the villagers – who began occupying parts of the park before the boundary of Thap Lan National Park was declared – support the separation of the 265,286 rai, many conservationists and other members of the public disagree with the plan, approved by the cabinet on March 14 of last year. Thailand’s island enforces plastic ban

People in Koh Nang Yuan, a famous tourist island in southern Thailand, have maintained the habit of limiting the use of plastic items for many years, especially single-use products. Tourists are also required to do the same to retain the island’s natural environment and protect the coral reef.

Comprised of three islets connected by white sand, the island is a great diving spot to see coral reefs. During the peak tourist season, Koh Nang Yuan attracts thousands of tourists every day, most of them are foreign travelers who want to scuba dive to see coral and record wonderful scenes underwater. Online service to aid foreign enterprises in Thailand

The Department of Business Development (DBD) plans to introduce a new online service dubbed e-Foreign Business to help foreign investors apply for permission to operate a business, which is expected to be operational this month.

Thai economy not good, with growth worsening: Finance Minister

Thailand’s economy has not been good for a long time, with growth deteriorating as it faces structural problems, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said today.

The government was working to lift economic growth to 3% this year from current projections of about 2.5%, Pichai told a business seminar, adding growth was low compared with rates of close to 6% in the past. Continued …

The prolonged period of low inflation in Thailand poses a danger to the economy, warns Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul.

Thailand is facing the dual challenge of tackling extensive infrastructure investment needs and growing public finance constraints. With Thailand’s 1.9% economic growth in 2023 falling well below expectations, the government is introducing a 500-billion-baht (US$13.6 billion) digital wallet scheme to stimulate private demand. No sign of a ‘just’ energy transition

As multiple impacts of climate change become more severe worldwide, including in Thailand, the need for an energy transition becomes ever more paramount. To that end, the latest draft of the Power Development Plan (draft PDP2024), which was unveiled in June, is touted by the Ministry of Energy as being consistent with Thailand’s goals of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero by 2065 – goals that already lag behind those of most countries.

Constant Energy Signs Solar Power Deal With Midea Refrigeration Equipment

Constant Energy has signed one of its largest corporate power purchase agreements (PPA) to date, a significant 12-megawatt peak (MWp) solar rooftop project with Midea Refrigeration Equipment (Thailand), a subsidiary of Fortune 500 company Midea Group. This agreement was established in collaboration with Anhui Midea Hekang Electric Power Engineering.

Thoresen Thai Agencies (TTA) ha teamed up with King Long to enter the Thai EV market, targeting commercial electric pickup customers, and aiming to sell 1,000 vehicles in the first year. The first showroom in the suburban Bangkok area was opened recently, and distributor partners were selected.

Ministry urges Thai tourism authority to set higher revenue target

The tourism revenue target for 2025 might be increased, as the Tourism and Sports Ministry would like to see the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) set a higher target than the 3.5 trillion baht sought this year.

During the TAT Action Plan 2025 meeting on Tuesday, the agency announced a target of 3.4 trillion baht next year, based on a projection of 7.5% growth from 3 trillion baht, which is the agency’s primary goal and the most likely scenario for 2024. Continued …

Belgian man dies from injuries sustained in attack in Hua Hin

A Belgian man who was gravely injured in a brutal attack in Hua Hin in April has died from his injuries, it has been announced.

Jan Valkenborg from Riemst, Limburg province, was in Hua Hin when he was assaulted by a German national. The attacker, who had a criminal record and was a member of a fight club, also assaulted another person that same evening. Continued …

561 factories in Thailand have shut their doors this year

Thailand is facing a surge in factory closures, with 561 factories shutting down this year, primarily in the steel and metal industries. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) warns that if production costs, including energy, transportation, and interest rates, remain high, more closures are likely. The FTI is urging the government to take immediate measures to support businesses.

ML Peekthong Thongyai, the federation’s vice chairman, said the FTI is closely monitoring the ongoing trend of factory closures. One Price for Locals … 6x for Tourists? When Foreigners Pay More

Hideyasu Kiyomoto, the mayor of Himeji City in Japan, this week proposed a significant price hike for foreign tourists visiting Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Currently, the entry fee is JPY 1,000 (about $6) for all, but the mayor suggested increasing it to around $30 for foreigners, while locals would pay $5. The extra revenue would help with maintenance and to counter overtourism.

A restaurant in Tokyo is already testing two-tier pricing. Tamatebako in the city’s Shibuya neighborhood charges locals JPY 5,478 ($36) for a weekday lunch buffet, while foreigners pay JPY 6,578 ($42). For dinner, locals pay JPY 6,578 ($42), and foreigners JPY 7,678 ($49). Continued … 

Tourism plan for second half of 2024 unveiled

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) on Wednesday unveiled its tourism promotion policy for the second half of the year, saying it would focus on attracting customers from long-distance markets to help the agency meet the government’s target of 3.5 trillion baht in tourism revenue this year.

Illegal tour groups forced to close

The Tourism and Sports Ministry has investigated illegal tour companies offering extremely cheap packages, forcing 10 of them to close. Tour agencies said these gray market companies already account for 50% of Chinese tour groups in Thailand.

The minister’s action is in response to a call from the Association of Thai Travel Agents, which recently raised concerns about the return of ultra-cheap inbound packages. An investigation into officers involved with the three missing seized oil-smuggling vessels is underway after a leaked chat showed a connection between some police and the mastermind of the oil smuggling gang.

The three seized ships, containing 330,000 liters of smuggled oil, had been docked at the marine police pier in Chon Buri’s Sattahip district along with two other seized vessels on March 19. The virus, identified as H5N1, spread rapidly among poultry and led to significant human fatalities. A team of southern herpetologists and rescue workers recently discovered a king cobra’s nest in a rubber plantation in Hat Yai. They plan to incubate the eggs before releasing the hatchlings into the wild.

Upon arrival, the rescue team found a large king cobra consuming a lesser snake beside its nest. They waited for the cobra to finish its meal before attempting to capture it. Officially named as “fragile” types of people, nearly 15 million nationwide will be entitled to the 10,000-baht, digital wallet handout project before fiscal 2024 ends, government spokesperson Chai Wacharong confirmed yesterday.

Thailand casino progress leapfrogs Japan, still faces big obstacles

Following nearly unanimous parliamentary support and cabinet approval, Thailand’s casino legalization process has the momentum to meet Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s target of opening a casino within two years. This is the first step toward establishing “entertainment complexes” with gaming in tourist areas across the kingdom.

Thailand’s speedy progress contrasts Japan’s glacial advance toward casino gaming. Successful legalization efforts in the world’s third largest economy commenced in 2013. Temperatures could rise to 43 °C today

Much of Thailand will experience extreme heat today, the Thai Meteorological Department warns, with temperatures in some areas likely to peak at 43°C. Scattered thunderstorms are possible, particularly in the southern region, with rainfall covering around 30% of the area.

The Bangkok metropolitan region will bake under partly cloudy skies with a maximum temperature of 41°C. The public are advised to take care of their health and avoid working outdoors or engaging in outdoor activities for extended periods. Continued … 

How many more lives have to be lost to restless driving?

Over the weekend, social media was buzzing with yet another accident, this time a pedestrian was hit by a motorcycle while he was trying to cross the zebra crossing – and this zebra crossing had traffic signals to stop vehicles for the pedestrian to be able to cross.

The video shows that the pedestrian waited for the zebra crossing’s light to turn green (meaning the pedestrian could cross, while the vehicles had to stop), before he opted to cross. He managed to cross the street on one side but as soon as he stepped on to the second road to cross, an oncoming motorcycle did not stop on the red light and slammed the pedestrian. Continued …

COVID-19 surges during Songkran festival

More than a thousand people were admitted for treatment of COVID-19 infections between April 14-20, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director of the Department of Disease Control. Of those admitted to hospitals, 292 are suffering from lung infections and 101 require ventilators to help with breathing. Three have died and all were either elderly people or had comorbidities.

Thongchai said that the surge in COVID cases during the Songkran festival was not unexpected and most of the cases were found in and around Bangkok and in tourist provinces. Continued …

Younger patients’ neck pain rises, smartphone overuse a key factor

Construction coordinator Jonathan Wu found himself often glued to his mobile devices during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, and because he was working from home, his lifestyle was sedentary. At the time, he was no longer visiting project sites, and he attended meetings online using his smartphone or computer.

Part of Kanchanaburi Motorway open for toll-free travel on weekends

A segment of the Kanchanaburi Motorway, from Nakhon Pathom West to Kanchanaburi, will be temporarily opened for toll-free travel on weekends. The toll-free travel over a 51km distance starts from April 26. Only private four-wheelers are allowed on the motorway. Vehicles should have sufficient fuel/charge for the journey. Eateries push for casinos in 2nd-tier regions

The Thai Restaurant Assn. is asking the government to consider building an integrated entertainment complex, featuring casino, hotel, shopping mall, amusement park and restaurants, in a second-tier area, promoting local dishes to sell in the complex.

“Neighboring countries have their own casinos and many Thais cross the borders to gamble at them,” said Thaniwan Kulmongkol, president of the association, adding Thailand has many entertainment complexes, but no casinos. Continued …

About 3,000 Myanmar nationals flee fighting to Tak

About 3,000 Myanmar people fled Myawaddy to Mae Sot district of Tak to take refuge from escalating battles between Myanmar junta forces and ethnic troops, according to officials.

Foreign Affairs Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara said on Sunday that the number of Myanmar refugees in Mae Sot rose to about 3,000 and they were under supervision of the Interior Ministry. Continued …

Thai government’s OFOS project to create 20 million jobs from June

The Thai government has plans to set in motion the One Family One Soft Power (OFOS) project in June, hoping to generate 20 million employment opportunities with a minimum yearly wage of 200,000 baht, according to Paetongtarn Shinawatra, head of the National Committee on Soft Power Development and leader of the Pheu Thai party.

Paetongtarn shed light on the forthcoming OFOS, disclosing that the scheme will offer free-of-charge up-skilling and re-skilling courses. Canal water? Really? 65 Children Infected With Rotavirus at Songkran Foam Party

A Songkran foam party at Suphanburi led to 65 children being hospitalized for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and high fever after getting infected with Rotavirus, with the organizers admitting canal water was used because tap water was not enough for the event.

When is Hua Hin planning to start rationing water?

On April 6, the Hua Hin Water Department put out a notice announcing the “immediate” rationing of water, with water available only between 5am-10:30am daily. The rationing was announced on April 8. It is now April 10 and the water is still running.

So, what’s going on? Did “immediate” mean sometime this month? Is the decision to start rationing being delayed because of the Songkran holiday?

We asked the government for details but they still have not responded. We are particularly interested in whether hotels, resorts, restaurants and water parks would be included in the water rationing. These are all heavy water-using businesses, with many depending on the tourist dollars a vibrant – and wet – Songkran would provide.

One resort we asked about the water rationing said it was “buying extra water from wherever we can”, and that trucks were delivering water daily. “Quite a hassle but it is what it is.”

A cynic might think the government is holding back until after Songkran, fearing that water rationing would ruin Songkran in Hua Hin, and all the money it provides. Given how protective local officials (and some farang) are of Hua Hin, this would not be a surprise.

We hope, however, the government is not sacrificing people’s lives because of a holiday.

Wherever you live, you’ve heard people make some wild comments about your country. Here are a few comments when asked, “What’s the most ignorant thing a tourist has said about your country?”

“When visiting LA, I was chatting with a girl at a party, and when she asked where I’m from, I told her London. She then said, ‘Omg, I hate London.’ I was slightly confused and asked if she’d ever been, and she said ‘No.’ I was like, ‘Okay, nice chatting with you!'”

“I knew someone who was shocked that we don’t live in stone cottages and thought Ireland was like a developing world country.”

“‘Where do you keep the Vikings?’ An American tourist visiting Denmark asked. I left him very confused and a little disappointed by telling him the truth about Vikings and that we did, in fact, not have reservations or anything.”

“I overheard an American woman saying that she was surprised at how well we Australians spoke American, although the accent made it a little hard to understand.”

“I met an American once who was under the impression that suburban Canadians all lived in wood cabins in the wilderness. At first, I thought he was kidding. Then he asked if we had winters all year round and was astonished to learn we have lengthy summers.”

Extra caution urged amid hot conditions

The Public Health Ministry is urging all members of the public to take precautions against the searing heat, which is expected to linger for the next couple of weeks, after reports of two deaths over the past two days due to suspected heatstroke.

With daytime temperatures often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in many areas, more people are susceptible to heatstroke, which can cause organ failure and even death, said Public Health Permanent Secretary Opas Karnkawinpong on Tuesday. Continued …

Cabinet agrees to Bt235B to fund health Gold Card scheme

The cabinet approved a Bt235-billion budget for 2025 fiscal year to fund the universal health security scheme (Gold Card) for the Thai population, under which each citizen will be entitled to medical coverage worth an average of Bt3,844.55.

The new health security budget is an increase of 9.53% over the 2024. The bulk of the money, about 181 billion baht, will go to the universal health security scheme for about 47 million Thais. Continued …

More than a year after the sinking of HTMS Sukhothai, a Rattanakosin-class corvette, in the Gulf of Thailand off Prachuap Khiri Khan province on the night of Dec. 18, 2022, the Thai Navy has blamed a sudden, unexpected and extreme change in weather and sea conditions for the foundering of the vessel and the deaths of 24 officers and men. Thai doctor offered bribe to drop lawsuit in Swiss scandal

The Thai doctor who was a victim in the Swiss scandal case in Phuket revealed that an unidentified person offered her and her family a bribe in exchange for withdrawing the lawsuit against the Swiss man.

The female doctor took to social media and accused the Swiss man, Urs Fehr, of physically assaulting her by kicking her in the back. The incident took place outside Fehr’s luxury villa on the beach near Yamu Cape in the Thalang district of Phuket on Feb. 24. Continued …

Thailand’s currency one of Asia’s worst performers

Thailand’s currency may extend its recent declines to test support at last year’s low amid growing pressure on the central bank to cut interest rates, according to the U.S. website Bloomberg.com.

The currency has already dropped almost 7% since the start of January, making it one of Asia’s worst performers, and putting it less than 1.4% away from October’s low of 37.237 per dollar. Some analysts see that level being tested if the Bank of Thailand trims its benchmark today. Continued …

Ninety-nine academics have joined in opposition to the entertainment complexes for which the House of Representatives approved a study on March 28. The study will address illegal gambling issues and the economic benefit of such complexes, which would house casinos as well as other facilities.

Foreign demand for Chon Buri condos outpaces Bangkok

The tourism industry’s recovery and the ongoing development of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) gave a significant boost to the real estate industry in the eastern province of Chon Buri last year, the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) said on Monday.

Cabinet suspends filing of TM6 cards at 12 checkpoints until Oct 15

The Cabinet resolved on Tuesday to suspend the filing of TM6 arrival/departure cards at 12 land and sea checkpoints, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said.

He said tourists arriving via land or sea at 12 checkpoints, including the Sadao border checkpoint in Songkhla province, will not be required to file TM6 cards from April 15 to Oct. 15. Haze control effort ramps up as Songkran approaches

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has instructed Chiang Mai and every province in the upper north to prepare their operation centers to handle the haze situation in order to ease air pollution during the upcoming Songkran festival when a rise in the number of tourists is expected.
