Fishing ban off Prachuap Khiri Khan coast starts tomorrow

A fishing ban has been issued to allow fish stock to recover off the coasts of Prachuap Khiri Khan down to Surat Thani, says the Department of Fishery (DoF). The ban is issued over two periods — from Feb. 15 to May 15 and from May 16 to June 14, affecting multiple maritime zones.

The first period covers sea areas from the tip of Laem Monglai in Prachuap Khiri Khan to Don Sak district of Surat Thani. The second period concerns areas from the tip of Laem Monglai to Hua Hin district. Continued …

53 provinces see unsafe PM2.5 levels

Bangkok and 53 of the nation’s 76 provinces were shrouded by unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution yesterday, with thick smog levels blanketing mostly the central plains and the east, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said.

GISTDA’s report issued said Bangkok and 27 provinces suffered red levels (hazardous to health) of PM2.5 ranging from 75.7 to 112.4 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Continued …

Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax

“I just returned from the Prachuap Khiri Khan tax office at the Prachuap provincial office (Not Hua Hin). I had my total amount that was transferred to fill in their forms, as well as proof the the monies were from Social Security office.

“While speaking to the personnel, they asked my wife where did my money come from. My wife showed them my form 1099 that showed how much was paid to me from the SSI. They then told her that all of that income on that piece of paper would be taxed and I would need to pay thousands on it to their office. I tried to explain to them (with wife’s help in Thai) that the DTA for SSI to Thailand is not taxable.” Continued …

Man Killed by Wild Elephant in Sam Roi Yat Palm Plantation

A 67-year-old man was fatally crushed by a wild elephant yesterday while inspecting his palm plantation in Khao Sam Roi Yot District.

The head of Kui Buri National Park confirmed the death of Chaliyo from Sam Roi Yot District, who was found lying on his back with severe injuries after being trampled by an elephant. 67 provinces, including PKK, covered with unsafe air pollution

Sixty-seven of 77 provinces in Thailand were shrouded with unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution this morning, with the worst smog blanketing greater Bangkok, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTA).

In descending order of PM2.5 levels, 20 other provinces shrouded with red levels were Samut Songkhram, Phetchaburi, Ratchaburi, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Nong Khai, Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya, Prachin Buri, Saraburi, Rayong, Suphan Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Nakhon Nayok, Lop Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima, Uthai Thani, Chanthaburi, Kalasin and Sa Kaeo. Summer to start as February ends, bringing highs of 43°C

Thailand will officially enter the summer season at the end of February, with high temperatures lasting until May, the Thailand Meteorological Department announced yesterday. The Thai summer is characterized by a hot southerly wind covering the upper part of the country, it added.

PM orders review of 2-5pm, Buddhist holidays alcohol sale ban

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered a review of the ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages from 2pm to 5pm following calls by business groups for eased regulations to support tourism.

The ban is not covered in the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act. It was announced in a decree by the coup regime of Thanom Kittikachorn in 1972 to deal with officials drinking during work hours, and has never been rescinded. Continued …

A 33-year-old Russian tourist lost his life yesterday after sliding from a water slide at the rear of a tour boat near Koh Sak, off the coast of Pattaya.

Rescue personnel from Pattaya’s marine disaster response team and the Sawang Boriboon Foundation rushed to the scene by speedboat. Upon arrival, they found the tourist, identified as Andrew Anganov, lying unconscious without a pulse on the deck of a large tour boat near Koh Sak. A significant spiritual event is currently taking place at Uttaradit’s famous Wat Phra Thaen Sila At. Though the royal temple in the Laplae district is renowned for its sacred laterite slab dating as far back as the Sukhothai period (1238-1438), it also boasts a towering 10-meter-tall jujube tree that stands tall on the temple grounds. Smog again covers much of Thailand, PKK at orange level

Unsafe levels of ultrafine dust blanketed 48 out of the 76 Thai provinces, and Bangkok, today, with red levels in parts of the central plain and the east, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported.

Forty-one provinces were shrouded with orange levels (starting to affect health) of PM2.5 ranging from 38.6 to 73.3µg/m³. They included Ayutthaya, Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Samut Prakan. Continued …

Regional deal signed to combat PM2.5 pollution

Thailand has signed an agreement with the entire membership of ASEAN to jointly deal with PM2.5, which is considered to be a transboundary haze. The harmful levels of PM2.5, from domestic and overseas sources, can affect the image of Thailand as an investment destination in Southeast Asia, according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has announced that its subsidiary, EGCO Group, plans to invest Bt30 billion (approximately USD836 million) in 2025 to expand its electricity generation capacity by 1,000 MW. The investment will primarily focus on accelerating renewable energy projects and strengthening cross-border investments.

Colder weather forecast for most of Thailand until Monday

The Thai Meteorological Department today forecast a decrease in temperature by 3-5 degrees Celsius in the northeast and by 2-4°C in the remaining regions except for the lower south from today to Monday. Thailand’s energy use rises as tourism powers up

The Department of Energy Business revealed fuel consumption in Thailand saw a 2.1% rise last year, reaching a daily average of 155.4 million liters, in tandem with an estimated GDP growth of 2.6%-2.7%, largely fuelld by bustling tourism-related industries.

An American man and his Thai wife are pursuing justice after being duped by a real estate firm into buying two plots of land and a house in Hua Hin, amounting to 15.2 million baht. Despite their investment, they have been unable to gain ownership of the property.

Thailand’s electricity supply withdrawal from the Tachileik border township in Myanmar is expected to affect about 7,500 homes, five hospitals, 45 schools, 65 temples and 15 army camps, said Natkhanet Charasveesirikul, manager of Provincial Electricity Authority’s (PEA) Mae Sai office.

Thailand reports 1.3% inflation in January

The headline consumer price index (CPI) in Thailand rose 1.32% in January from a year earlier, after an increase of 1.2% the month before, the Ministry of Commerce said today.

Thailand has officially launched a nationwide campaign, “Stop Burning, Stop Dust,” to tackle the ongoing problem of PM2.5 air pollution. The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), aims to enforce strict bans on open burning and raise public awareness about the dangers of air pollution.

Yesterday, Saharat Wongsakulwiwat, deputy director-general of DDPM, chaired a high-level meeting at the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command Center in Bangkok, to assess the current wildfire, haze, and PM2.5 situation. Study: Biomass Burning Fuels North Thailand PM2.5 Issues

A study conducted under the ASIA-AQ project has found that most of the PM2.5 pollution affecting northern Thailand is due to biomass burning. This revelation was the product of a collaborative effort between NASA, Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), and other scientific teams.

Fifty-seven out of 77 provinces in Thailand were blanketed with unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution this morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Thirteen provinces faced red levels (hazardous to health) of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Forty-four other provinces faced orange levels (starting to affect health) of PM2.5 ranging from 44.1 to 74.8µg/m³. They included Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Rayong and Samut Prakan. Continued …

Thailand’s Health Department is pushing to expand dust-proof dining, aiming for 20,000 restaurants with dust-free rooms nationwide within three months. The initiative follows rising PM2.5 pollution and efforts to improve air quality in public spaces.

In a recent survey conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), a significant portion of Bangkok’s residents expressed dissatisfaction with the efforts of state agencies in managing the capital’s persistent PM2.5 pollution crisis. This pressing environmental issue has seen growing public concern over government actions and their efficacy.

The poll highlighted that a hefty 76.5% of respondents rated the government’s handling of the PM2.5 pollution as less than efficient. Specifically, 41.2% found the efforts to be somewhat inefficient, while 35.3% considered them completely inefficient. PM 2.5 levels in Bangkok continue to impact residents’ health

The PM 2.5 levels in Bangkok today remained at an unhealthy level, with all areas classified orange. According to the Bangkok Air Quality Information Center, as of 7am, the average PM 2.5 level in Bangkok stood at 47.2 µg/m³.

The Commerce Ministry plans to seek cabinet endorsement to ban the import of maize from fields that are burned following the harvest, according to a government spokesman.

The stadium is located on a 371-rai site in Bang Lamung district. It began with an investment budget of 774 million baht in 2008, and was originally scheduled to be completed in 2017. Canada, China, and Mexico yesterday unveiled tariff countermeasures against the U.S., after U.S. President Donald Trump declared he was putting up tariffs against these countries.

On the day of his inauguration, Trump signed a fusillade of orders – among them new tariffs, imposing a 25% levy on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. Thailand’s luxury hotels experienced strong growth in average daily rates (ADR) throughout 2024, increasing by 5.3% year-on-year and 42.7% compared to 2019, according to STR, a global leader in hotel industry research.

Occupancy rates in seven of Thailand’s tourist cities showed steady growth throughout last year, signaling the continued recovery of the Thai hotel industry. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has approved a 24.15-billion-baht procurement plan for 184 new air-conditioned diesel railcars, replacing aging rolling stock that has been in service for over three decades.

Sixty-seven out of 77 provinces in Thailand were shrouded with unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution this morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

TAT touts bright start for New Year arrivals from China

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is working toward increasing charter flights from secondary cities in China, while preparing to launch the first phase of the domestic “We Travel Together” subsidy, offering 1 million privileges in June.

High-speed motorcycle crash leaves Russian tourist dead, 2 injured

Operator of plastic waste warehouse that caught fire ‘violated industrial laws’

The operator of Teng Fa Plastic and Metal warehouse in Ban Paew district of Samut Sakhon province, which was engulfed in flames on Wednesday, was allegedly in violation of industrial laws, the Provincial Industry Office said.

A fire broke out at a large pile of recyclable plastic and rubber waste at the 13-rai (2.08 hectares) garbage warehouse compound, destroying two warehouses there.
