Thailand’s tweak of tax regulation on foreign income sparks confusion, worries

On the first day of 2024, a recently tweaked regulation on foreign income remitted to Thailand by Thai citizens and foreign residents will come into effect – much to the consternation of expatriate retirees and investors in foreign assets.

The new “instruction” – announced by the Revenue Department on Sept. 15 – is a revised interpretation of a longstanding tax regulation that now states that any income from a foreign source derived by a Thai individual tax resident is subject to personal income tax when brought into Thailand. Diesel price hike imminent

The price of diesel is likely to rise to 31.94 baht per liter from 29.94 baht if the Finance Ministry fails to extend current measures, an Energy Ministry source said.

Thailand faces a ton of trouble with a 62% surge in plastic waste

Plastic waste in Thailand has witnessed a surge of 62%, escalating from 2.12 million tons in 2019 to 3.4 million tons in 2020, according to the Thailand Environment Institute. This increase has been largely attributed to lifestyle changes induced by the pandemic, such as an increased reliance on food delivery services.

Over 1 million women protected in HPV vaccination project

As of Friday, as many as 1.03 million doses of the human papillomavirus (HPV) have been administered to women aged 11-20 years old nationwide.

This is what happened to Miss Wang (given name withheld), a twenty-something Chinese lady on Friday after she posted such video on Tuesday, which went viral, partly due to the fact that the Thai press and most news commentators were outraged and politicians accused the woman of deliberately portraying Nana area on Sukhumvit Road, also known as Soi Nana by many Thais, to be a dangerous place where a single Asian woman could be dragged away (and possibly sexually assaulted) by foreign sex tourists or sexpats in the area. Bus accident in PKK’s Thap Sakae leaves 14 dead, 35 injured

At least 14 people were killed and 35 others injured when a tour bus left the road and crashed into a tree in Thap Sakae, Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Thailand’s weekly Covid-19 cases surge over 500, with three fatalities

The Department of Disease Control in Thailand (DDC) reported a sudden surge in weekly Covid-19 cases, with over 500 new patients and three fatalities. The DDC revealed 88 cases of pneumonia among Covid patients. The report, which covers the period from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, confirms an average of 76 hospital admissions and one death per day.

Since the start of the year, the total number of Covid cases has reached 36,204, with 826 cumulative deaths. Among these, 88 patients have been diagnosed with pneumonia and 40 required respiratory support. Continued …

The cabinet on Monday approved a tax refund scheme for shopping to stimulate domestic spending early next year and promote wider use of electronic invoices, according to the Finance Ministry.

Thai Government Plans to Establish Clean Drinking Tap Water

Anutin Charnvirakul, deputy prime minister, has delegated that both Thai metropolitan and regional officials authorized that electric or water bill payments could be postponed for 3 months if the electric or water bills were less than 300 and 150 baht each month, respectively.

Dengue fever infections increase by about 300% this year

The number of dengue fever patients in Thailand recorded between Jan. 1 and Nov. 1 was more than 123,000, which is an increase of nearly 300% compared to last year.

Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, acting director-general of the Department of Disease Control, said that, of the 123,000 people infected, 139 have died and most were in the 25-34 age group. Continued …

Electricity tariffs: Potential 6 baht/unit increase expected next year

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed three options for determining electricity tariffs for the first quarter of next year. The electricity tariffs could potentially increase to a peak of 6 baht per unit. The board of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) voted on Friday evening to approve the takeover of the broadband internet service provider Triple T Broadband (TTTBB) by Advanced Info Service (AIS).

Air Pollution Soars Across Most Of Bangkok

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said yesterday satellite data appearing on its “Dust Check” application showed that dangerous particles in the air known as PM 2.5 had soared in 48 of 50 Bangkok districts and exceeded the red code, which is 90 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in 34 of them.

According to Thailand’s color-coded air-pollution-warning system, green means moderate or no risk at all; yellow means the air is unhealthy for those suffering from respiratory illnesses, with children and the elderly urged to limit time spent outdoors; orange means it’s unhealthy for all; and red means hazardous. A warning has been issued to fans of barbeque and tabletop grilled pork to limit their consumption to no more than once a month. Additionally, they are advised to always consume organic vegetables.

This caution comes from Associate Professor Dr. Surat Tanprawate, a neurologist, who posted the warning on his page, Brain with Dr Surat, on Friday. Thai Anti-Trafficking In Persons (ATP) officers confiscated E-cigarettes, E-liquids, and other equipment, a total of 60,500 units worth over 10 million Baht, at a private distribution center in Bang Pa-in, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.

Van Overturns In Chiang Mai, Killing 2 Foreigners, Injuring 10

Yesterday, a tourist van traveling from Chiang Mai to Pai overturned on the Chiang Mai-Pai route, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, where they found two foreign tourists dead outside the vehicle.

The plan to build a “land bridge” from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea as a route for international trade was given the green light on Oct. 16. Rescued baby deer doing well at WFFT

That abandoned baby Muntjac deer Expat News reported on a few days ago is now safe and recovering at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT). The deer, who has been named Cha Lao, was found all alone and was being chased by street dogs when it was rescued. AT WFFT, he was given a medical examination and has since been receiving specialist care. including regular bottle feeding with warmed milk. The minister of the interior in the present cabinet said the buying influence or protection era was over. Two killed, two injured in violent brawl over a woman

A violent brawl over a woman led to the deaths of two individuals and the injuries of two others in Prachinburi province. The violent brawl incident took place in front of a residential building where the victims were drinking alcohol. The police were able to apprehend one suspect at midnight today.

TCEB predicts business travel/meetings 2024 revival
